Quinn found herself getting closer, peering at the armor, "Is that... shark skin?" She questioned, "It looks so... tough. Amazing. Did you kill the shark yourself? Or is it made in bulk? And do you know how long it takes to make it?" Question after question poured out of Quinn, before she looked sheepish, "Sorry. I find this stuff really cool."

Ripley smirked at the other Mer, at first they had been a little wary of the Mer and her lower half. As currently, the finned Mer were at war with the squid/octopus Mer and Ripley didn't think they could trust this Quinn Mer. Which would be normal as a guard. At the same time, Kiache trusted Quinn so it couldn't hurt to be nice to the other Mer for now. "Yes, it's shark skin. I killed the big bastard myself. It's how you get to be apprenticed, you kill your first shark then you make your armor. It takes around half a moon cycle or even a full one depending on what you do with it. And it's perfectly fine, you're new to all this. I'm so sorry about you being taken by the way, it must have been awful living like that. I can only imagine it." Ripley involuntarily shivered, they could never be brought away from their ocean. It was their home.

"Oh, um," Quinn blinked, remembering that Kiache specifically didn't mention them being humans, "Y..yeah. I don't really remember much about the ocean. I've been... I have been in the human world for as long as I remember." It wasn't a lie... Only a large part was being omitted, "And you armor is so... amazing. You must be really strong to take on a shark... It's... everything in the ocean is so amazing." Quinn had talked more with Ripley than she had for the entirety of the trip to Kiache's Home-City.

A smile played with the corners of Jack's lips as the two interacted. Quinn was already making a friend. That was pretty good. She was doing better than Jack who was kind of intimidated by the Mer's imposing, protective figure. "Well the training to kill one isn't too hard, you just have to be faster than it. You look pretty strong, you could probably be able to kill one in a little less than a half of a moon cycle. That's only if you actually want to be a guard though, or even part of the war effort. I'm still an apprentice and I've been doing this for hmm, almost as long as Kiache has been gone. It's a great job." Ripley seemed really passionate about their job. After all, the whole point in becoming a soldier was to protect those they cared for.

Quinn pursed her lips, "I'd like that," she admitted slowly, "To become stronger. You've trained a long time to get here... it's admirable. And... war effort? I wasn't aware you were fighting." Out of the corner of her eyes, Quinn saw Kiache slide up to Jack and give his hand a comforting squeeze and smile. "Don't worry. I'll stay with you. Ripley is nice, there is no need to be afraid," Kiache said privately to Jack, attempting to reassure him.

It was a well known fact that becoming a soldier took a very long time. Years and years of hard work went into it and training started at the age of ten. For Ripley, it had been a bit harder. They had started her training at age 12, two years after Kiache was taken and 4 months after their mother figure was captured. So instead of becoming a knight at 17, they would become one at 18. In fact, their ceremony would be three full moons from now. Surprisingly enough, they were becoming a soldier faster than anticipated as technically they should actually become one at 19. "I can help ya if you'd like! To train I mean. I'm sure a ton of mentors would be head over fins to have you as their apprentice. You're already so strong, it wouldn't take nearly as long as it normally would for someone your age. Speaking of which, how old are you? Oh, and to be honest, I was sort of wary of you at first." Ripley winced, although it was their job to be suspicious, they didn't want to make a bad impression. "Currently us Finned folk are at war against the octopus/squid people. Their leader is particularly horrible and oppressive. We want to free their people and not have to live in fear of any attacks." Ripley's dark eyes glowed, obviously very passionate about their role in the war effort.
Jack turned towards Kiache as she spoke to him. His gills flaring and colorless eyes staring straight into Kiache's. "I'm sorry. I probably seem rude or something. I'm just not used to all this...interaction...." He trailed off, his words left unsaid. It was true, Jack hadn't had this much conversation in a very long time and it was uncomfortable. It made him a tad more worried and scared, as he knew full well he was pretty horrible at socializing in general. He didn't want to make a bad first impression. Quinn was nodding, "I'd like that - you training me. I'm 18, by the way. I..." Lucky Quinn was a quick thinker, "I worked towards getting stronger ever since the incident. I'm not used to the open waters though, so that'll be difficult to get accustomed to." When Ripley continued on, Quinn understood. She, too, had trust issues, "I understand. The safety of your people comes first. As a guard, you can't trust just anyone. I'm... I'm glad you seem to trust me, at least a little bit. And... if in any way I can help... I will." Quinn dug her nails into her palms, "I know what it's like to live in fear and be a captive. It's not.. fair. Nothing's fair, but if I can help change that, I will."
Kiache grinned, "Don't worry. You are nice, and Ripley is kind. I'm here with you," Kiache released Jacks hand, "Hopefully, as time passes, you will feel at home here, and not be so worried. I'll help how I can."

Ripley smiled at Quinn, happy to have found common ground with the new Mer. "Of course! I can help you with the whole open water issues and get you your armor. As for trusting you...well Kiache trusts you and you seem nice enough. Also eager to work, so yes, I trust you." Ripley shrugged, their scales had finally stopped shifting and now covered one of their eyes. So the whole eye was surrounded by a bundle of scales. "Thank you Kiache, and I am sure it'll be a lot better here than it was on land." Jack gave Kiache a small smile, a promise to try his best to overcome his social interaction issues. Which apparently had to start now because Ripley was looking at him expectantly. Jack's pale eyes finding the Mer's. "And you are Jack right? The water around you is cold, why is that?" Ripley tended to get straight to the point when it came to certain things. It startled Jack more than he let on. "Oh I um, I have cold powers. I can freeze things or make ice appear." Jack looked uncomfortable and awkward. He wasn't used to social interaction. "You weren't born here were you?" Jack shook his head, coming up with a story in his head. "I-I was born in captivity. For a while they kept me with my family but that didn't last long." It was basically the truth with a little bit of editing. Ripley narrowed their eyes and finally smiled. "I like this one! He looks all cold but he's just nervous." The Mer laughed softly, the sound quite odd underwater.

Kiache smiler brightly to hide her relief. Ripley didn't suspect anything. She felt bad lying to the other Mer, but it would be easier for her to trust them if she didn't know. Hopefully they could come clean later. Quinn was cheery, for once, and Kiache figured now might be the time to call it quits for the day, "It has been good to see you, Ripley, we will need to talk more. For now, though, I am sure we are all tired. It has been a long day."

Ripley's nodded and smiled at their old friend. Realizing quickly that this was a nice way of dismissing them. "Oh yes! It's been wonderful to see you again and meet your friends. If you ever need me, I'm normally in town. I'll be off then." They smiled quickly then, as quick as a minnow, raced out of there. Off to their own home where they'd take this armor off and relax. Jack still felt quite a bit awkward and had turned a little pink from Ripley's comment.
