There are classes inside of classes. The modern world would call this taxonomy. His genus is Tân, which is the genus of fire dragons that live in the volcanic areas. His species is known as Tân defaidpen. If you are confused, let me translate for you. An emperor penguin’s family is a long complicated name telling you that it’s a flightless bird that lives in the southern hemisphere. Then you have big penguins for the genus. Finally you have another name at the end telling us that it is a certain type of big penguin that has its own behaviors, looks and charms. The same goes for a Tân defaidpen. Of course, this is just the big science word for it. His type is most commonly known as a Horned Volcano Dragon. However, it doesn’t sound as impressive.

Dan’s an average-sized dragon for his kind, standing at about ten feet tall. His scales are small, but many and durable. Like roman roofing, they fold neatly on top of each other and like chainmail, they are flexible with the body and muscles. When he is awake and fully fed, his scales become vibrant and sharper so that they look alive and healthy. Between the impressions between his scales there is a scorching yellow glow that looks like it would burn you at the touch. It won’t. That is just him being a show off. His actual color is a flaming red with orange undertones on the scale. The yellow is between the scale and provides some flash. He cannot control how vibrant he is very well, yet. If he was on a stealth mission, it would be essential that he’d be fed, healthy, and not glowing like a nightlight. He has figured out that when he is relaxed, perhaps napping, his scales are a sleepy red, similar to that of an autumn leaf. The impressions between his scales are a hardened gold color that is duller than the brighter yellow flame. When he is hungry, you can tell that his scales loose some of their color and become grayer. Almost like there is a fire inside of him and it’s dying. His red-hot body looks similar to that of embers glowing dimly peering out of the char.
His face looks like it’s always in a scowl (which sometimes it really is). Usually, that’s just his resting face. His face is long and pointed like a droopy nosed borzoi’s. His nostrils are large and occasionally you can see steam puffing out, which usually only happens after he’s been concentrating hard or just threw up some fire.
His eyes are interesting. They look like a lizard’s eye. Of course, what else would you expect from a dragon? Puppy eyes? His eyes are similar to that of a Komodo Dragon’s. Circular in shape and the coloring. Dan’s iris is a coppery hue with what looks like red dye swirled in with the metal while it is in the liquid base. Then, in the center, there is a void of blackness that is highlighted by a ring of cream that forms a thin layer around it. Like the Komodo, Dan can blink. Above his eyes is a brow that is large and sturdy. This leads up to his horns that circulate around like a ram’s. They seem useless, but they can be helpful in a rough spot. However, he hasn’t been in a lot of situations where he needed them, so they are mainly seen as decoration. They are made of keratin, just like his tail’s tip which is similar to a provincetown toggle-iron whale harpoon. Yes, his tail. His tail is meaty and long so that it is whip like. It can, in fact, stab people, but he really doesn’t like to do that because it takes forever to clean it off. He does like to keep it in good shape, so it’s always sharpened. Since his tail is rather long, it does slow him down with its weight.
His wings are large like the sails of a Chinese Junk ship. In the drawing above, you can see his bones protruding. Not out of the skin, that would be disgusting. Ew, so much blood. No, just sticking up a little bit. His wing bones are hollow. If they weren’t, he wouldn’t be able to fly. Unlike his body which is naturally protected by an armor of tight-knit scales, his wings are only leather. This means that they must be armored. Chainmail is being made to protect him from arrows. Like his scales, the rings are small and firmly made, but loose enough for movements. It will be enforced with leather. They do not want to put any heavy iron armor on him for speed. His lengthy tail and decorative horns are already dragging him down.
If you look at the drawing, you will see that his feet are a bit odd. Unlike the stereotype dragon that has huge, pointed fingers, he has something more like paws. They still are covered in scales, but the underside is like a cat’s pad. These need to be protected, so he actually wears leather and chainmail boots. He also has opposable thumbs, or something like that. They would help him do too much, like draw or cook, but they are helpful when it comes to opening doors and picking some stuff up.

Personality:
Dan is an interesting guy. He fits in the personality of a fire class, but he’s a bit different. Many people see fire dragons as the tough jocks that’ll defend their pride and will challenge you to a fight for seemingly no reason. Not saying that Dan isn’t tough, it’s just that he’s touch on the outside and soft on the inside. He’s also not that stupid to go asking for a fight. He isn’t much of a jock, too. He doesn’t try to show off his vibrant autumn colors, but it seems that way because he can’t control the flashiness. So he doesn’t really fit the stereotype of a fire dragon. But is the standard the stereotype? No, it’s not.
Like most fire dragons, he is stubborn. If you tell him something is impossible for him to do, he’ll try his hardest to do it. In the picture above you can see him scowling at a dragonfly. He’s actually talking to that dragon fly. He’s very literal and is confused by why something is called a name when it’s not it. It’s not a dragon. It’s a fly. Even if you got all the insect doctors who specialize in dragonflies, he would still be stuck in his ways of insisting that it’s not a dragonfly and that he himself is a dragonfly when he’s up in the air. According to him, it’s just a fly. If you tell him ‘go cry me a river’ he’ll tell you that while he is big, it would be impossible for him to cry a river and that he wasn’t feeling particularly sad that day either.
He is from a volcano and while he still lived there, he enjoyed his little lava baths. He’d float on his back and splash his neighbors or family member. It was great. He actually misses his volcano and its nice, warm heat. Comparing, everything else is really cold. He still doesn’t believe that there is a place full of ice and coldness. He barely believes that there is magma underwater. He’s sort of a “see to believe” sort of person and he doesn’t want to see the coldest place on earth and he certainly does not want to go swimming. Who knows what kind of sea monsters is down under? Plus water is yucky and wet. Water is only there so that you can survive and to make cakes. Cakes are good. If you didn’t need it for those things, then he’d say be gone with it. Of course, he wouldn’t actually want that because where would all the water dragons live? Now, there are some things that he doesn’t need to see to believe because believing is seeing. Those things are Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny, and the Leprechauns that hide coins in your couch. Why? Because his momma told him those things and momma is never wrong.
He is confident in his believes and disbeliefs to the great sorrow of a lot of people. He walks with confidence in himself because he knows his abilities. He’s a fire dragon, he can butt heads and he can stab stuff. It’s a simple checklist that any fool could remember. He knows himself very well, too. What he likes and doesn't like. He sees things in black in white. He can be blunt and will ask if someone is a bad person or a good person. If you try to tell him about being morally grey, he’ll listen but then tell you that you must be confused. He is simple that way.
He also really likes his food. Like most big dragons, he likes a lot of it. Particularly meat, but he’ll eat a salad if he must. He’s not overly fond of fruits, but he’ll eat them if they’re in a cake. Cakes are his favorite. It’s a texture thing mainly. He likes how soft they are and how they are chewy, but not too chewy, if you get what I mean. He can’t make anything like that for himself, so he specially asked cooks to make it for him. A main meal for him growing up was a lot of reptiles since they were attracted to the heat. Do not eat lizard. It is so stringy and little so that you barely get anything from it. Disgusting.
He’s a gentle giant that wouldn’t hurt a friend on purpose. At most he’d say something blunt like telling them that they should loose some weight because they’re getting kind of heavy. He is a stranger to betrayal. He’d never betray because he’s a good guy. He doesn’t understand how someone could do that to a friend. It’s just how his mind works. He’ll make jokes that aren’t funny, but he’d be laughing the entire time while he is trying to say it. So, you don’t get to really hear what he is saying. This is good for both you and him because his feelings won’t be hurt and you are spared a terrible pun.
His feelings are tender because he takes most everything literally and he doesn’t understand sarcasm. So if you tell him that he’s a bad flyer as a joke, he would start to tear up. You can try to teach him sarcasm and he wouldn’t understand. If you are a friend, you would say nice things. Then he’d start to worry that you don’t like him any more and will try to do things to please you or win back your favor. Just go with it because there isn’t much you can do to stop him.
A funny thing is is that he’s expected to go into war and he pukes at the sight of blood. There is just something about the sight of something bleeding that upsets his stomach. He’s a poor hunter because he shuts his eyes when he’s about to strike, usually making him miss. He has killed stuff before, but then he started hacking up his last meal which made him loose his appetite. So, he’s a better friend than soldier.
