Ase was forced by the cold, sharp edge of her opponent’s blade to gaze up into his deep green eyes. She could get lost in those eyes..and she did for a moment. Maybe she should just give in and get her well-earned rest..

Youre right. That’s what she wanted to say. Instead, she swallowed her words and tried to calm her erratic breathing.

The blood from the wound on her cheek dripped down onto her lips. She licked the crimson liquid off of her lip and tried to wrench her arm out of Kalen’s grasp. The strength of said grasp caused her to drop her main weapon. This was...not going well.

“Maybe I am. But who’s to say you aren’t as well….darling?” As she spoke, more of the thick, red liquid from her cheek dripped down onto her lip, falling off in tiny droplets. They hit her fallen sword with a light thwink, like gently raindrops hitting a tin roof. It was almost..calming. The now rising moon caught a reflection from that same blade, almost acting like a spotlight for the two dueling parties.

The woman pulled out her second bamboo staff and took as good as a swing as she could to his shin. With her limited mobility, there was less, if any, of a chance the staff would strike true to its mark.

Kalen froze slightly as he watched her looking up at him, taken aback for some reason. He gazed back at her, his eyes slowly following the blood from her cheek, dripping down onto her lips, droplets falling onto the sword, the quiet dripping sound of the metallic liquid hitting the metal.

His eyes dragged back to hers, his feet shifting almost as if he were nervous, a faint smirk on his face as she spoke. Kalen shrugged slightly, his eyes lingering on the blood-red lips. The scent of her was almost intoxicating, filling his lungs.

Kalen’s chest suddenly felt almost tight, like his lungs were shrinking. He shook his head slightly, trying to shake the feeling. But it had little effect, unable to move his eyes away from hers for one moment. What the fuck was wrong with him?

He had barely even registered; she'd grabbed the other staff, when she swung it. Kalen swore, pulling his sword away from her neck, careful to not let it cut her, jumping back. He barely made it out of the way, pulling the swoosh of the staff against his knee.

He looked up at her in slight surprise, but grinned. Watching her careful, he spun the sword in his arm, painfully aware of the cut down the length of his forearm. Spinning the blade once more, he stepped forward, making a slight faint stab at her.

Hoping she’d fall for it and move to the opposite direction, he stepped in that direction, hoping to be able to knock her off her feet. Kalen’s mind was still reeling from the obscure feeling he’d gotten when she was looking at him, needing a minute to clear his head enough to continue.

Ase did fall for the feign. She slid out of the way of the stabbing sword and right up into her opponent. Why had she fallen for that? It's the oldest trick in the book!

Maybe it was his eyes. She pulled her thoughts away from that notion as she hit the ground. Ow, that would be a bruise. Her feet scrabbled for purchase as she took hold of her fallen sword and pushed herself back. Once she had put a good six or seven feet of space between them, she used her sword as a sort of walking stick. She pulled herself up and regained her balance before taking a defensive position.

Maybe it was their proximity..

Maybe it was the way he looked at her

Or maybe it was the changes she caused in him.

She'd seen the quickening of breath, and the minuscule shakes of his head. She saw the flats of new emotion and confusion in his eyes. And she'd seen how much effort it's taken him to pull his gaze from her lips.

But, to entertain any of those notions, shed have to care what he thought about her. What he felt. And she didn't!! She didnt Why would she care about him?

She whirled her sword around and resumed her defensive state.

The woman watched his every move. She watched his eyes flick around. She had to admit, she liked his eyes. Shed ready fallen victim to his gaze once. She watched as the slight breeze ruffled his hair. She watched as blood dripped down his bronze skin. And, she watched as he shook his head again. What was he denying? Was he going to back out of the fight?

Ase shifted, but kept her eyes on him. She spit blood onto the ground below and licked her lips to get rid of the ever-mounting liquid.

"Well?"

Her challenging look had returned to her eyes, and when she looked up at him again, it was clear there was..more on her mind.

Kalen watched as she fell for it, literally. He plastered a grin on his face, looking at her. “Good to know you’re falling for me” he mocked, chuckling softly. But the grin faded a little too quickly, his head still spinning.

He watched her getting up, staying where he was. Kalen watched as she once again went on the defensive side, holding her blade out at him. He was more surprised that she hadn’t gone on the offense, but after taking the injury to her side the last time, it wasn’t too unbelievable.

Kalen watched as she spat out blood, frowning. That didn’t look so good. He almost stepped towards her, to do god's know what, but stopped himself. He couldn’t forget, she was his enemy. That's all she was and that was all she’d ever be.

Kalen couldn’t risk doing anything that was different than what they were doing; fighting, and it’d be a mess. He wasn’t stupid enough to let feelings get involved, into anything, let alone a fight like theirs. Besides, that wasn’t going to be an issue. If things got out of hand, he’d just kill her. Simple fix.

Kalen stalked towards her, forcing a blank look onto his face, almost glaring at her. Whirling the blade in his hand, he approached her, feeling his jaw tick as he clenched it. He didn’t bother giving the look in her eyes a second thought.

Instead, he lunged forward, poised to swing the blade at her. But he stopped, his hands slightly shaking, he let the blade fall to the ground, before stepping back. Kalen’s eyes burned at her, giving her a hateful glare, looking her over once, before turning.

He walked away slightly, crossing over to the other side of the clearing. With his back to her, for a split second, the thought of her attacking him crossed Kalen’s mind. But he shook it away, flicking his arm to try to shake some of the blood off.

"Don't even speak" he hissed over his shoulder.

Ase almost flinched at the intensity of his eyes. Not at the sword that was half-swung towards her, but just his eyes. Those smaragdine eyes that now burned with unbridled hatred. She felt hurt by the look in those eyes, more so than the injuries she had sustained.

As he walked away, she sniffed and wiped the blood from her cheek with her hand. She looked down at the red staining her pale skin before looking to the sword he'd dropped to the ground. She used the leg of her pants to wipe the red from her weapon and went over, picking up her staff.

As he cautioned her against speaking, she had to smirk a bit. He thought that would work? Well, now she just wanted to do it more.

The half-fae woman leaned against a tree, watching him pace away. She watched as the blood from the wound she had made on his arm dripped. That must really hurt. She looked to her wrist, where he had grabbed at her. It was already starting to bruise. How amazing.

Ase pushed herself off of the tree and slowly walked over to where he had left the sword, keeping her eyes on his form the whole way. She picked up the blade, after sheathing her own, and wiped the blood off of it.

"You dropped something." She said lowly, leaning the now clean sword against a small sapling.

With that last sentiment, she tromped back to the tree she had previously been positioned at for some self-care. She sat with her back against the tree, knees bent, and pulled a length of cloth bandage over her wrist. Then, her eyes started to wonder around the clearing. The one place she didn't look was at her opponent's retreating form.

She did, however, let her eyes trace over the same steps they had taken day after day. The grass in the clearing was tramped down in a large circle from where he had paced every day. He was a curious man. Very curious indeed...

And she was a curious woman.

Kalen turned at the sound of her voice, not bothering to try to do anything about the glare on his face. Huffing slightly, he walked over to the sapling, roughly grabbing the sword and sheathing it once more at his waist.

He looked at her for a few moments, just watching her as she walked around. His eyes wandered over her, watching the way she walked, how she carried herself. The way her eyes travelled over the grass, the clear marks of where they’d walked over and over again.

Kalen watched as she began to fix herself up, wrapping a length of bandage around her wrist from where he grabbed her. He felt almost a twinge of guilt, as he hadn’t even realised he’d hurt her when he did so.

But Kalen pushed it down, reminding himself that once more, she was his enemy, not a friend. Not somebody who he needed to worry about hurting. This whole thing was to hurt each other, right?

He looked around for a moment, wincing as he stretched his wings slightly. Kalen looked down at his forearm, glad to see it wasn’t bleeding freely anymore. Grabbing a piece of cloth, he wiped up some of the blood, avoiding touching the wound with it.

Once it was more or less clean, he turned back towards her. “What the fuck is your problem?” he snapped, ignoring the fact it was completely unprovoked.

Ase looked up from tending to her wounds, an almost amused look across her features. Her small smirk turned into an actual grin. Deep in the left side of her cheek, revealed when she grinned, were two dimples. One, at the base of her lip, just a bit to the left. And the other in her cheek, where a dimple would "normally" be placed. She laughed a bit and leaned back against the tree, her elbows propped on her knees.
"I could ask you the same damn thing, darling." She smirked once more, training her eyes on the distant visage of his face. "You could have ended this. Right there. Right then. But you dropped your weapon." She feigned a concerned look on her face. "Did you get enough sleep last night?" Her voice was one you'd use when talking to a baby, dripping with sarcasm. "Do you need your blankie?"
She blinked a few times, tilting her head and pouting her lips mockingly.
"Poor thing."

Kalen’s eyes shot back to her, his eyebrows rising ever so slightly in shock. He slowly walked towards her, his jaw clenching almost painfully as she spoke. He stood in front of her, looking down at her almost in spite.

He couldn’t even bring himself to force a grin on his face, instead he let his glare continue, the anger burning in his face. Without a moment's hesitation, he grabbed a hold of her arm, pulling her up to her feet once more, his other hand immediately pushing her back, a tight grip around her throat.

Looking at her, he stood close to her, glaring down at her. “I could have killed you right then and there, but I didn’t. Because I had respect for you” he told her, his voice dripping with venom almost.

Kalen put emphasis on the “had”, letting it be known that it wasn’t the case anymore. “You really are pathetic” he whispered to her, looking at her with a mix of hatred and disgust.

Ase tilted her head up as far as she could, which, admittedly wasn't far in his tight grasp. She trained her eyes upwards and onto his own. She almost leaned into his touch. Her heart was beating rapidly as she breathed. She could feel his breath as he spoke.

This time, she leaned up on her tip toes. "You're right. You should have.." The words were laconic..it wasn't a threat, per se. More like a subtle psychological jab, to see how he'd react.

The woman didn't struggle as she was held against the tree, but instead relaxed against the back of it, keeping her eyes unwaveringly on Kalen's. Her pulse was pounding in her ears and behind her eyes, the faint sound causing pulses of a deep blueish black to pop up in front of her eyes. The hairs on her arms and the back of her neck stood up. She knew struggle was inutile.

Kalen felt a subtle smirk as he felt her heart racing. He chuckled at her words, but continued to hold the spiteful look in his eyes. He ignored her words for a moment, knowing exactly what she was trying to achieve and choosing not to retaliate. Ase didn’t deserve it.

Smirking, he tilted his head slightly, his eyes narrowing at her. Slightly adjusting his grip on her neck, he watched her. “What’s wrong, darling? Nervous?” he asked, moving his other hand away from her arm and onto her stomach, holding her against the tree.

Chuckling once more, he took a mental note of her lack of struggling against him. If it were anyone else, they would have been fighting him, but apparently, that wasn’t going to happen. The reason why was what he was most curious about.
