Evelyn- age 18 (deceased at age 17) Kage, Sky, and James have been dating for nearly two years now (they dated for four before breaking up). The abuse against Sky from James has already started, though there's been mostly mental and emotional abuse with minimal physical abuse.

Skylar sat in bed, his back pressed against the headboard for support. He was shivering slightly from the cold, chilled despite the mountain of blankets on top of him. He'd been sick for almost a week now and it seemed to be getting more miserable rather than better. It didn't help that the apartment he shared with his two partners was very poorly insulated, allowing the bitter wind of winter to creep inside.
Sky sniffed and pulled one of the blankets tighter around him, glaring pitifully at the book he'd been trying to read for the last half hour. He'd only gotten through a page before his tired eyes blurred, and, damn it, Kage and James should not be taking this long!
Just as he thought it, he heard the front door slam open, flinching at the noise. James's voice echoed through the small apartment, scolding Kage for opening the door so harshly and Skylar couldn't help but smile as he heard Kage apologize repeatedly, sounding very unconvincing. The bickering continued down the hall until the door to their room opened (more softly this time), revealing the two boys that Sky had somehow fallen for. Kage grinned and James smirked and they both broke off their conversation to focus on Sky.
"Hey babes, how're ya feeling?" Kage questioned, trotting into the room and positioning himself on the edge of the bed, dropping the grocery bags he'd been holding.
"Terrible." Sky mumbled, grimacing at the raspy sound of his voice.
"Aww, no better at all?" Kage asked, pouting.
"Unfortunately not." Skylar replied, smiling faintly as Kage frowned and fell back onto his legs, careful not to jolt Sky too much. The latter reached a hand out of his blanket cocoon and ruffled the soft black locks, looking up as James approached.
"Well, that sucks." He stated, smiling softly as he bent over to press a gentle kiss to Sky's temple. "Can we get you anything? We bought some soup that I can make if you're hungry."
"I'm okay, thank you. Also, if you do cook, don't let Kage in the kitchen, okay?"
"Hey!"
James chuckled. "Got it. Yep."
"Hey!" Kage protested again, sitting up. "I'm not that bad!"
"You nearly burnt down the house last time." James pointed out, raising an eyebrow.
"That was one time! And it wasn't my fault! The instructions told me to wait for thirty minutes, it was only cooking for ten!"
"You preheated the oven to 400 degrees when the recipe said 350." Skylar stated. "And it happened more than once. You burnt your hand the time before that. On ramen."
James snorted and Kage crossed his arms, huffing dramatically. "You guys are mean."
"Hey, I like our kitchen! I'm not risking you destroying it." James said, smirking at his pouting boyfriend. "Besides, I-"
He was cut off by the sound of a phone ringing and, furrowing his brow, James quickly dug the device out of his pocket. "One second, it's Holland." He pressed the accept button and placed the phone to his ear while Sky and Kage watched him curiously.
"Hello? Yes, this is James, what do you need? Why, did something happen? Oh, God, are they okay?! Shit. Okay, we'll be there in ten. Yeah. Yeah. Bye." He hung up and looked to his partners, concern reflecting in his dark blue eyes. "It's Justice."
Kage shot up, eyes widening. "What happened? Are they okay?"
James shook his head slightly. "Kage, calm down. There was an accident, she's in the hospital right now, there's still a chance." His voice was soft in contrast to his usual energy.
"Accident? What kind of accident!?"
"I don't know yet." James said, taking a half-step forward. "You need to calm down."
"No, I can't, I-"
"Kage. It'll be okay, come on, we'll head to the hospital now. Sky-"
Skylar shook his head, ignoring the pain spiking through his skull. "I'll be fine, just go."
James nodded swiftly and grabbed Kage's arm to keep him from running blindly out of the apartment. "Okay, we'll be back soon."
"Sure."
—
It was four hours before they returned and the broken expression on Kage's face as they finally re-entered the room told Skylar everything he needed to know. James's slight shake of his head just enforced it.
"I'm so sorry, Kage." Skylar said softly, opening his arms as the smaller climbed into the bed and curled against his side, tears flooding his emerald eyes. James let out a quiet breath and sat down on the bed as well, reaching out to take one of Kage's hands in his own.
"I don't get it." Kage hissed, squeezing James's hand tightly. "I don't fucking get it."
"Love," James started, eyes examining his partner worriedly. "I'm sorry, but-"
"When will it end?" Kage's voice was gruff and filled with anger, something that caught both Skylar and James off guard. “First Ty, then Evelyn, and now Justice! Who’s next? Us? Holland? Agnar? There aren’t that many of us left! This shouldn’t be happening! It isn’t fair, it was never fucking fair! We’re kids!” The tears poured harder down Kage’s cheeks as his voice rose and Skylar felt his own eyes start to sting. James looked away. “We’re fucking kids! Why can’t we just live!? Like normal children! Why do we have to fight for our lives while others are out there going to school and eating three meals a day?! It’s not fair!”
“It’s not.” Skylar agreed softly, wrapping his arm tighter around Kage. “And I’m sorry, but there’s nothing we can do.”
“I wish there was.” Kage said, his voice dropping back to a near-whisper.
“We all do.” James replied quietly, taking a breath before looking back over. “But, whatever happens now, I promise everything will be fine. I’ll make sure of it.” He smiled sadly and squeezed Kage’s hand, reaching out with his other to lightly cup Skylar’s cheek. “Everything will be fine.”
Skylar leaned his cheek against James’s hand and smiled faintly, feeling as though his lover's touch chased away the pounding headache and the aching cold. Next, to him, Kage seemed to relax a little, burying his face in Sky’s chest as he continued to cry quietly. James was right.
Everything would be fine.
