Angelina Bryan || 15 || Female || M : Indirect People

Angie kept dead silent in the back of the little Toyota, chin tucked in and left leg splayed at a diagonal angle to keep her stump from getting too painfully jostled. Her arms were crossed tightly across her chest, almost in a defensive position, and she swayed back and forth in a near loopy motion with the swerves and bumps with the road. As her mother pulled alongside a well-worn truck, Angie shrank deeper into herself and stared hard at the back of the passenger's seat.

"Angelina, come on out," the woman told her firmly, parking and gesturing to her second passenger -- Angie's father -- to get the rolling suitcase out of the trunk. The man sighed heavily and obeyed with a mumbled, "Yes, dear."

Angie remained in her defiant position for another few moments before getting out and lurching her way forward towards the lunch room. With her hair down to hide both her hearing aid and her sour expression, the girl scribbled down her name, picked up a map, and lurhced away again.

"Angie!" her father called, jogging awkwardly with the suitcase bumping and bouncing behind him. "Angie, wait!"

Angie did not wait.

She was perfectly capable of finding a cabin on her own, thank you very much. Hers happened to be the nearest to the main buildings, which caused her scowl to deepen. No doubt, her adopted parents had made sure she was nearest to the nurse's office.

"It's not like I'm so weak I'll drop dead walking," she snapped suddenly. All of this -- moving in with a new, permanent family, hyppotherapy, a riding camp -- it was beginning to snowball into one, hulking avalanche of emotion. Both parents stopped, shared a look, and moved on. In a matter-of-fact way, her mother said, "Of course not."

There was hesitancy. Angie knew it. She was not weak, and she was going to prove it to them if it was the last thing she did. And she would start by pulling her own weight.

Taking the suitcase from her father's hands, she lugged it across the uneven terrain and into the cabin, not allowing any signs of struggle to present themselves. She managed to get it up the wheelchair ramp and into the cabin itself, sliding it underneath one of the beds and crossing her arms again.

Not long after, her parents had left. She was finally alone. Well, for now, anyways. Determined not to be caught off guard, Angie refused to lay down on the inviting bed and instead practiced walking "right". Slow, controlled. She didn't want to be the "different" girl.

After another clump of time had passed, Angelina sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the opposite wall, listening to the faint whinnies of unseen horses and the chatter of others arriving, their perfect footsteps ringing in her ears.

Bandit || 4 || Mare || Thoroughbred || M : Other Horses

The red dun tobiano shifted in her stall, muscles tense and legs splayed slightly. Her ears flicked back and forth, straining for signs of human approach. She needed to run. To move. Kicking halfheartedly against the back wall of the stall which already had several indentations at kicking level, Bandit pushed forward and pressed her chest and front legs against the door, neck and head reaching far out the door. Swinging her head both ways, she released a testing whinny. It sounded dead outside the barn.

In the past couple of days, humans had been in and out of the stables quite frequently. Sure, it was early, but she needed to go out now. The pent up frustration and energy from the time during her recovery and subsequent removal from the racetrack was still very much alive.

Trying to strain harder, she could hear footsteps at one of the buildings not too far off from the barn, yet far enough that those pathetic two-legged creatures either couldn't hear or wouldn't respond. Pinning her ears, Bandit released a frustrated sort of growling huff and turned to observe the shuffling of the other horses around her.

It then occurred to the young mare that the door leading to the strip of a runway was open. Whether it was intentional or someone had forgotten, Bandit took advantage of it and pushed it open. She strode from the stall and walked along the railing, her legs stretching out as far as they would go. It only took her a few movements to reach the end of it, but she didn't return to the stall. The barn at which she had raced hadn't had this luxury, and it was one of the few things she would thank her current owners for.

She turned her gaze to the source of the sounds. More humans were arriving. New ones. She didn't recognize their rhythms. One was coming up, perhaps to let them out. Or, who knows, to try and ride, maybe. Bandit snorted softly and shifted her gaze away once more.

Chicago || 5 || Stallion || Vanner-Paint || M : Open

Chicago's closed eyes opened briefly at Bandit's annoyed cries. Peronally, he found the lack of morning rides confusing as well. Usually, this was the time he'd be taken to a corral or a round pen to be run around in endless circles. The only part of those sessions he enjoyed was the canter that he was allowed to move into afterwards.

He shut his eyes again and rocked backwards slightly, heaving a sigh. There was an odd feel to the air this morning, almost tense. Was a human tense? Afraid? He couldn't quite tell, obviously since there were off across the way, but he could tell there were some new arrivals. The tire sounds alone were evidence of that.

Chico moved his muzzle and half his face out to peer over at the other horses. Slowly, he asked, "What do you think is going on?"

He wasn't sure who would respond. Arashi and Bandit were now both outside, and he couldn't see all of the horses. His deep red and white coat twitched as flies began to appear, causing him to swing his tail in mild irritation, before he moved to his water bucket. It was almost empty, but, then again, the humans were acting strange today.

Kori Santos
Seventeen | Female | Mentions: Avery, Santos Parents

The transition from road to gravel had been smooth, at least in her opinion. Living on a property where dirt tracks were the only mode of transport made the change easier, even if the bounciness had her giggling to herself. But, either way, it meant that they were nearing the camp. The excitement that coursed through her was almost impossible to beat, sending adrenaline through her veins and nervousness clouding into her head. It wasn’t that she lacked any confidence, she was more comfortable around horses than people most times, but just… what kind of random would she have to room with?

“What if one of us gets stuck with someone like Emma?” She smirked at her own words, teasing her older sister when the girl wasn’t there to defend herself. Her sister was definitely the girliest out of the family, obsessing with makeup and hair and clothes--of course, Kori loved her sister, she loved Emma so much, it was just… odd to have a member of the family that wasn’t as obsessed with being outdoors as much as the rest of them were. That didn’t mean they supported her any less, putting the money together to send her to a school where she would learn about makeup professionally.

Keeping her gaze on Avery, Kori couldn’t help but soften her expression to a smile. She and Avery were opposites, that much was obvious. Not only in appearance, really their only similarity was that they were both tall, but in personality, too. Where Avery was quiet and introverted, Kori was loud and daring, throwing herself into harm's way. Although, as they say, opposites attract. They’d met as young children, and had been inseparable since then. Kori would be damned if she let Avery escape her now.

Dragging her attention off of the other girl when the car came to a stop, Kori unbuckled her belt and opened her car door, looking towards the camp. It was, to put it lightly, breathtaking. She rushed to collect her things, knowing that her parents had to return home to their own horses (god forbid they leave her brothers in charge of the stables for too long), and moved to stand next to Avery, brushing her shoulder against the thinner girls, grinning. “Excited, Ave?”

“Take care of each other, girls,” her mother called to them, leaning out of the window and waving at them. Kori giggled and nodded, chucking an arm around Avery in a side-hug.

“We will, mum, don’t worry.” Her parents had been heavily involved in both of their lives--the other girl had spent a lot of time on her family’s farm growing up, and Kori had loved spending time at the others house, too. She… didn’t know who she would be without her best friend by her side. “You ready?” She asked, removing her hold on the other girl and beginning to prance, for lack of a better word, towards the lunch room, where they had been instructed to go.

She could only hope that she would get to room with someone that would make things easy.

Pol Emmett
Seventeen | Male | Mentions: Others Briefly

Pol hadn’t really paid all that much attention to his surroundings, trusting that Isaac knew where he was going. There wasn’t a chance that Isaac didn’t know where he was going--the raven-haired boy (he was 19 but Pol refused to call Isaac a man) was the definition of the ‘dad-friend’. He’d even overseen Pol’s packing, making sure that he had everything he needed, telling him that--

“If anything goes wrong,” speak of the devil and he shall appear.

“I know, I know.” Pol groaned, leaning his head back and pushing the heel of his palms against his face. “If anything goes wrong, I have to call you, or Marcus, or Rocky. I know, Isaac. God, you’re worse than my parents, y’know that?” The older child only chuckled, nodding and grabbing the blonds bags from the back of the car.

“Anyone could be more annoying than your parents in the ‘caring about you’ department,” Isaac muttered, placing a firm hand on his shoulder, looking at him with eyes filled with so much kindness it made him fake gag, chuckling afterwards. “Promise me you’ll call if something does happen, Pol.”

“I don’t make promises,” it was a lie, he made lots of promises, but he felt like teasing a little bit. “I’ll see you at the end of the summer.” He pushed Isaac’s face away with his hand, feeling the boy chuckle against his palm, and quickly jumping out of the car. His final farewell was a wave, faltering a little in his steps towards the lunch room, where they had been instructed to go.

Briefly he spotted two girls talking near a car, a boy walking back to a car, and another girl getting out of a car. In the distance, the sounds of horses were plain to hear--the place was gorgeous, honestly, and it seemed like they’d have quite a few people in the camp. Although, he did have to check in, and he was… well, he was used to Isaac doing that kind of thing for him. Not that he couldn’t do it himself, it was just odd.

Making his way into the lunch room, he signed his name on the piece of paper that they handed him, and took all the paper that they handed him with a grateful smile. Most of the map was something he could pay more attention to later, focusing on finding his dorm for the time being. Juggling everything in his arms, as well as keeping balance with his single bag, was mildly difficult until he located the dorms labelled as the boys dorms on the map.

He headed straight to the assigned area, seeing that his dorm was the third one, and picked a bed. Would he even end up sharing a room with anyone? Maybe, maybe not. It didn't matter all that much to him either way. With a roommate, he would have company. Without a roommate, he could invite any friends over (if he even made them here).

Without his baggage to weigh him down, Pol exited his room and headed straight to the stables, just to check out the horses there before they all got assigned.

Kendric

17 || Male || Rider || M:Open

The entire car ride Kendric had held a white knuckle grip on the steering wheel. He had his drivers license for a little over a year now, but his mother always freaked out about the little things. So far, the drive had been completely silent, it had often been filled with: Oh you should be an inch closer to the curb, now you're too close to the curb, do you want to hit it and pop the tire? TELL ME WHEN YOUR CHANGING LANES! That stop was too rough. He didn’t want to have another argument about it right before he left for camp, and was determined to drive perfectly. It was ruined when he ran over a pothole a few feet from the camp entrance, not seeing it in time to move.

His mother threw herself dramatically forward in her seat, and opened her mouth to make a comment on how he should’ve seen it sooner. He didn’t reply, letting her chatter on, and made the turn down the Camps driveway. Once the camp itself came into view he let out an audible sigh and found a spot to park. Kendric immediately jumped out of the car, swinging his legs out of the side of his mother’s blue truck and jumping down.

He was dressed in a black and white flannel, he wore his work boots, and pulled the ends up his jeans over the top of them. His curtained hair was styled so it swooped back and was out of his face. Kendric no longer wore any chains around his neck, nor rings, he was in what he liked to call his ‘horse clothes’, nothing too fancy, but also something he would be comfortable wearing and working in.

He closed the car door, wincing as it slammed, “Watch my truck!” his mother called, appearing from the passengers side. “It was an accident!” He yelled back, opening up the door to the truck behind him, he reached into the back to grab his bag, and tugged the thing out. Swinging the single strap over one of his shoulders and being careful to close the door without a noise.

Kendric gave one last glance towards his mother, and tossed her the keys, nearly walking off with them. He turned to walk to the check-in area and he heard her voice screech for him once more. “Where do you think you're going without saying goodbye!”

He spun around, heel digging into the ground as he stalked back over to her, his mother’s arms extended and she pursued her lips together as he approached. Kendric gave her an awkward pat on the back as she wrapped her arms around him, being oddly affectionate before he pulled away. “Alright...see you later,” he nodded, heading quickly away from his mother. It was then that he noticed that a few others had already arrived, and was glad none seemed to notice the awkward exchange. He was just ready for camp to start.

Old Blue Soldier | Irish Cob | 16 - Gelding
Partner: Angelina Bryan
Mentions: Chicago
. . .
Following his brief roll in the paddock, dusted to his satisfaction and no longer cursed with the itch on his lower back. His head remained at approximately the level of his hooves, expression and posture relaxed as he nibbled lazily at the hay lining the flooring of his stall. I wonder when they'll bring me my first sack. I haven't eaten since my grooming earlier.
-
The old gelding lifted his head at the sound of a younger stallion's words, leaning lazily over the bottom half of his stall door that was left open for the vanner to socialize with the passer-bys or other horses, should he desire to do so. "I'm not sure," he had admitted, his ears giving a lazy flick as he listened to the unfamiliar gaits of the two-legged creatures he'd come to trust with his life. Odd creatures. So many prance about like foals. "But I don't like what I hear."
-
It was no secret that Old Blue Soldier hated--no, no he despised--trailers, the gelding rearing and kicking out at the door of his stall each time one could be heard rolling in, or he could hear the hooves of other horses as they were loaded or unloaded. It was one of few times he would appear anything but the calm, gentle "giant" that he was. When he heard the tires rolling against the gravel beyond the stable doors, he firmly believed they were trailers, rather than the miniature beasts that carried the humans inside.
-
"I hope they're not selling us. My old heart can't take more trailers."

Arashi | 5 | Mare | P: Sasha | M: Open

Arashi walked back into her stall, her ears back so that she could hear better the chatter and footsteps of the humans arriving from somewhere behind or to the side of her. Unpleasant as they were, the humans did give Arashi hay and filled her water buckets so that she could drink and cool herself off in the blazing heat. However, Arashi would never let a human touch or ride her, not without a fight, anyway. Or without treats, which the black thoroughbred mare assumed any horse would do anything for. As Arashi entered her stall, she put her nose to the bottom of it and as soon as she found the perfect spot, started to roll around in her shavings. The flies swarming her dispersed, but Arashi knew that they would be back. Another useful thing that the humans provided was fly spray, which Arashi thought was magic. How could one get rid of those pests so easily?

Arashi rolled over and over, the muscles in her back getting tired from it all. When she was done, the mare planted both of her long, slender forelegs into the deep shavings that lay in her stall, hauling both of her backlegs up so that she could stand before giving herself a vigorous shake. A cloud of dust enshrouded Arashi, which soon fell back to the ground. Arashi was getting impatient, as she wanted food and she wanted it now. She backed up into the wall and started to kick at it, making marks and dents in the wood as well as loud noises that could be heard by those nearby. She kept doing this until her back legs eventually and inevitably got tired, then she started to paw and strike at the ground. When that didn't work, Arashi resorted to rearing and neighing.

The mare went up into the air, her front legs arching and her mane and tail coming out behind her. Arashi let out a long, shrill, neigh which was actually more like an ear-piercing shriek. She could hear horses neighing and speaking, but none of those voices were directed to her. Not that she cared, since she was only trying to get the attention of the humans so that she could have her morning hay and get some water, and maybe even a peppermint or two.

Chicago || 5 || Stallion || M: Old Blue Soldier, Meriadoc (NPC), Sasha

"If they were selling us, wouldn't they have come in earlier and been all frantic?" he asked, tilting his head. "That's what they did right before Meriadoc got res-rec-rev-whatever they call it. Taken to a new home."

His next-door stablemate, a Shetland pony named Meriadoc, or Merry, had gone to a family with several shrill children that had hurt Chico's ears, but the middle aged bay pony had seemed perfectly fine with them. The humans had made sure he looked perfect before the family had come, though, and they hadn't even checked the barn today.

He sighed and then turned his head towards the doors of the barn as the doors opened further to reveal the tall frame of a foreign person. Chicago pushed his head out with curiosity written all over his face and he said to Old Blue, "Well... Maybe we are getting sold? He's new."

Sasha walked in and studied each of them with a thoughtful expression on his face that worried Chico further. Were they being sold? He'd made friends here; he didn't want to leave them. Nor did he want them to leave him. But the young man, boy, whatever, wasn't looking at any horse in particular. Was that good or bad?

Avery Crane
Seventeen | Female | Mentions: Kori, The Others (Indirectly)

Avery crinkled her nose when Kori mentioned her sister, Emma, and shrugged gently. She had nothing personal against the older girl, but she wasn't sure she could room with her for a whole summer. Though, she didn't imagine there were a lot of people she would want to room with for a whole summer.

"I don't think there would be anyone like Emma here though, not her kind of thing, yanno?" She replied reasonably as she pulled her suit case out of the back of the vehicle. She had brought one large suitace, and a large duffle as well, one of the bags had one significantly smaller bag solely for toiletries and girl stuff.

Her eyes flicked to the other girl's parents, people who were like a second set of parents to her, and she offered them a smile and lifted her hand in a wave. "Thank you for the ride, Mrs. Santos," she called out, before turning to Kori when her arm wrapped around her.

She began to walk with her two bags, balancing them carefully as she moved. "I'm excited, but it's a lot to take in," she murmured as she half lead the way towards where everyone else seemed to be going to check in.

"Did you want to unpack first, or go check out the stables?" She asked, wondering what her friend might want to do once they had checked in.
