Awh man, that's unfortunate. Do you live in a rural or city area? I'm sure they'll turn up. In my experience dogs have a pretty good sense of where home is!

If any of the children are responsible enough to not run away themselves, I'd definitely let them go bring the dog back. I'm assuming someone saw the dog run out and he went after the dog with him/her in sight.
