In trading post I sometimes see wolves advertised as heroes. What does that mean exactly?

Hero means their vitals are all positive. You can find these on the wolf page under their health, food, and thirst.

Also, zeros do not count as positive.

If the numbers are all positive, they are a hero. 0 does not count.
