Intro

In one instant, your life comes crashing down around you. Shattered beyond repair. There is no way for you to move on from this defeat.

It was all over.

Amidst the all-consuming anguish, you are approached by a mysterious stranger who calls himself The Contractor. He offers you a solution, an escape. Something you cannot refuse. In return, he asks for your life. You are to serve him for a set amount of time until your debt is repaid. After the designated term you will be offered another choice; to go back to your previous life, or to start entirely anew.

You take his offer.

— —— - ೃ࿔₊ - —— —

Plot

You are an assistant to a mysterious entity known as ‘The Contractor’, one of his well-known ‘Masked Ones’. The main role of one who works directly under him is to help him maintain order between the Human World and the Otherworld by completing various tasks and missions in both worlds, and by closing up any Rifts that appear.

Each world still exists on earth, technically, but on different planes of existence; they are mirror realms of each other. You can also think of them kind of like a Venn Diagram; there is the mortal realm and then the other realm, and there are places where they overlap. They are inextricably connected and one cannot exist without the other.

The Other realm has similarities to the world we know, but is also vastly different. Magic exists there, along with other things that only exist in legends and fables in our world. All stories have to come from somewhere, don’t they? In the places where the realms overlap, sometimes creatures from the Otherworld slip through to the Human World, and vice versa. This was always bound to happen, and small instances aren’t cause for concern as long as they are resolved. However they must remain on that small scale. The realms depend on the less known about them, the better. If a large population of either world learned of the other, the carefully maintained balance of the realms would be disrupted. A disruption would lead to instability, and instability to a total collapse of both worlds. Nobody knows quite what that would look like, but all are in agreement that it would end in calamity.

To keep the careful balance between worlds, there are four entities whose job is specifically that, known as The Regulators. Their existence was made for the sole purpose of maintaining balance. They are a part of both worlds, and neither at the same time. No one really knows what they are; some call them gods, others think they are powerful spirits. Regardless, it is true they are some of the most powerful beings to exist, and they have the freedom to traverse both worlds. They manage instances where beings slip into the wrong world, they patch up any major Rifts that appear, and they make sure that certain circumstances are even in both worlds. In extremely rare cases, they will even step in when events in either world begin to escalate to levels that those involved cannot handle, or when one world is not advancing as it should. For when things go too far sideways in one world, balance is disturbed.

The Contractor is one of these entities. Each one is in charge of a different region in both worlds. Rumor has it that The Contractor is the weakest of them all, particularly because he recruits humans to assist him, but it’s something he allows others to believe. His closest Masked Ones know this is far from the truth.

Hello and welcome! This is an idea that I've had in mind for a very long time, but I fell out of roleplaying for a long while and didn't have much free time on top of that, so it's been sitting in my drafts for ages. But now I'm back, and finally pulling this out of the dust! I do have some plot ideas if needed, but I'm hoping to mostly plan that along with everyone and see where this goes.
・ᴗ・
— —— - ೃ࿔₊ - —— —

Rules

• All wolfplay rules apply here.

• This is semi-lit to lit and 2+ paragraphs minimum. There's no need to rush, and the RP will go smoother if there is more for others to go off of.

• No god-modding or power-playing.

You can only have one character who is a Masked One, since those are limited roles. However you can have additional characters from the ‘Other Roles’ section. There isn't a max number of characters per person, I leave that up to you. Only play as many as you can properly handle.

• No OP characters; everyone has flaws and weaknesses. Only 1-2 additional abilities per Masked One, and this ability must have a weakness or drawback to go with it. The stronger the ability, the more intense the drawback.

• I will reserve character roles for up to four days, after that they are up for grabs again.

• Please try to stay somewhat active, posting around once a day to at least a few times a week. I understand life is busy (mine certainly is) but I'd really love it if we all kept this going somewhat long term! However if you go inactive for a long period of time without letting me know and your absence affects the roleplay, I will have to remove your character and re-open the role.

• Hate the character, not the roleplayer.

There is no password as I am trusting you all to read through and follow these rules. I will give a couple warnings at first but if the rules keep being broken I’ll have to remove you from the RP.

• Overall, please respect each other and me, and have fun!

Roles

The Contractor (1/1)

- M || Played by Lost Legends || Pg 1

(I made a blog post forever ago with a short story about what someone's first encounter with The Contractor might be like here, if you want to check it out!)

The Masked Ones (1/10)

These are the main roles of the roleplay. The masks listed below don’t have to be the only ones in this RP, they are just a few that I have come up with. If you would like to propose your own in place of one below, just PM me or include it in your form and I’ll either approve or deny it!

All Masked Ones were originally human, and can come from any era or time period. Under contract they have become something more, despite still appearing mostly human, and they stop aging physically when the contract is made. Upon making the contract, you are given a new name, and upon arriving at the manor, you are given a mask. It’s intricately carved into the likeness of a specific creature that reflects your own soul (some look more like the creature than others). With this mask comes strange abilities, powers that you will need to serve The Contractor and survive in his world. You are told you must protect it at all costs, for if it completely breaks while you are bound to it, you will suffer a fate worse than death.

If you want a better idea for what a mask might look like, my inspiration came from the Japanese kabuki masks that they wear for theater or at festivals, and you can look up examples online. I was also inspired by the video game Sky: Children of the Light, and if you want to see what the charcter masks look like from the game you can check them out here.

There are certain abilities that every Masked One has. It is a small bit of The Contractor’s power gifted to them to help them, and it includes the following:

Shadow Travel - Pretty much what it sounds like. The ability to step into a shadow in one place, and step out of a shadow in another. Most can take one or two people with them when doing so, sometimes more depending on how strong they are. The farther the distance, the more energy it takes.

Dimensional Storage - The ability to store anything in a ‘dimensional pocket’ of sorts, and then re-materialize it at will. Only works on non-living things, and you can only access your own items.

Barrier Magic - The ability to form barriers of magic energy to either keep things in, or to keep things out. The strength and size of the barrier depends on the strength of the user.

Restraint Magic - The ability to bind something or someone with chains of magic energy. Again, the strength depends on the user.

Enhanced Durability - It isn't a whole lot, and a Masked One can still be seriously injured or even killed, but their bodies do become a bit sturdier than that of a normal human. They can withstand harder blows with simply a bruise to show for it, rather than broken bones. They also naturally heal faster than a human.

Original Masks: (0/5)

Masks that reflect the image of a realistic animal from the Human world. These still have their original form after they were first given, however there is always potential for one to evolve. Even later on in the RP (if we get that far lol) one of these masks could evolve. They aren’t any less powerful than the evolved masks; how strong they are depends entirely on the user. Three (0/3) of these Masked Ones are brand new to Tsoka Manor at the beginning of the RP. If you want your OC to be one of these three, include the word ‘New’ in the mask section of the form.

• Wolf

- Reserved for Moose

• Owl

- Reserved for High Hills Pack

• Elk

- Reserved for Raven Wing

• Lion

-

• Snake

-

Evolved Masks: (1/5)

Masks that reflect the image of a mythical creature from the Otherworld. Those who wear these masks are more of a unique case. Over the course of their service so far, some event triggered a major change in the Masked One, causing their mask to evolve to an Otherworld creature. This isn’t to say they have become more powerful (though some do), it is more that their abilities have changed to fill a certain need. These Masked Ones tend to have been working for The Contractor longer, but not always. For example, one (0/1) of these Masked Ones is brand new, their mask evolved almost as soon as it was given to them. To have your OC be this character, include the word ‘New’ in the mask section of the form, and what Human world animal the mask was originally.

• Gryphon

- Reserved for my character

• Dragon

- Reserved for Lost Crowns

• Kitsune

- Reserved for Spellbound

• Oni

-

• Phoenix

- Reserved for the Wayne pack

Other Roles: (0/Unlimited)

Not required for the RP as they will be NPCs otherwise, but available if people would like to play them instead of a Masked One or to add another character just for fun or for more interactions. These roles remain at a place called the Tsoka Manor where everyone lives for the most part, but may occasionally leave on an errand for The Contractor or to assist the Masked Ones. FYI, they are not all necessarily human… Little is known about why they work at the manor, but they are all there of their own accord. Some are mysterious and rarely seen, others are social and interactive. Many have certain abilities that assist with their designated jobs.

Possible jobs around the manor:

- Kitchen Staff (Chef, server, etc.)

- Medical Staff (doctor, nurse, herbalist, etc.)

- Alchemist

- Maid/butler

- Groundskeeper/gardener

- Stable Hands

- Martial Arts Trainer

Etc.

Feel free to ask if you have any other job/role ideas you would like to add!

Additional Terms & Info

Tsoka Manor

Otherwise known as “Fate” Manor. This is where The Contractor and those who work with him reside. It’s a beautiful, sprawling estate, distinctly gothic in its architecture and in pristine condition. The main floor of the left wing is strictly off-limits, belonging to The Contractor, but the rest of the manor is for its other residents. Strangely enough, the size of some of the spaces seem to be larger inside than they appear from the outside, and anything one could ever need can be found here, even if it wasn’t there the day before.

Contracts

There are two parts to every contract; the first request of the individual or the offer The Contractor made, and then the individual’s second chance at life. In many cases The Contractor will complete the first part of the individual’s request right then and there. Other cases aren’t so time-sensitive and can wait for later. It is after the Masked One has finished repaying their debt that the second part of the contract is completed.

Here are some examples of what The Contractor can be capable of fulfilling in these contracts: bringing someone back to life, stopping a certain event from happening, sending someone back in time to prevent a mistake and do things a different way, heal an incurable illness, etc. The possibilities are endless, and nothing is impossible.

The more difficult the contract, the longer the Masked One is required to serve The Contractor. The service and effort they put in is what directly powers The Contractor to complete their request. As such, depending on how well the Masked One does, the time of the contract can either be lengthened or shortened. When The Contractor senses that a Masked One’s contract is close to ending, he calls them into his office to discuss the time they have left and what they want to do when the contract ends.

A contract is formed first verbally by The Contractor making his offer and the contractee agreeing to the deal. Following this each party will then spill a few drops of their blood on the watch face of The Contractor's pocket watch. The contract is thus sealed.

Masks

The mask is fashioned of a curious, smooth material that is seamless, but it is at the same time sturdy like armor and nearly invincible, and it covers the entire face. The mask perfectly conforms to a person's features and lines the face, creating a comfortable, snug fit and doesn’t require straps of any kind to stay on. Each one is unique and reflects something about the user, so they can have all sorts of shapes, colors, and designs. How intricate or simplistic they are is entirely dependant on one's personality traits.

Masks are personally created by The Contractor, and begin as a blank slate. When it is initially bound to someone is when the design changes to match the user. They are the main source of a Masked One's power, and is what ties them to The Contractor. The mask can be taken on and off at will. Some Masked Ones choose not to wear them unless they are on a mission, while others keep them on all the time. Many keep their mask on their person, like clipped to their belt or something similar, where it can remain easy to access at all times. However it can be put away into the dimensional storage or stored somewhere else. It's highly recommended that a Masked One always keep it close, for they never know when they might need it, and it is in one's best interest to keep it safe.

While masks are extremely durable, it is still very possible for a mask to be broken. It can withstand some damage without permanently harming the user, such as scratches, scuffs, cracks, and chips. However, if a mask is entirely split in two, broken, or shattered, it cannot be fixed.

The mask is intrinsicly linked to an individual's soul, and it is what ties them to the present. When The Contractor makes a deal and takes someone to Tsoka Manor, he pulls them out of their original timeline. His power can sustain this change for only so long without a more solid anchor. The mask is that anchor that binds the individual both to himself and his power, but also keeps them stable and intact until the contract is complete, and The Contractor returns them to their own time. That is why when a mask breaks, there is nothing to anchor the individual's soul to the present any longer, and they are lost; cursed to wander through eternity without rest. A fate worse than death.

This is the massive fault in The Contractor's system, and he has yet to find a way to rescue a soul whose mask has been broken. However he continues to search, keeping tabs on those who are lost, and always looking for ways to fix what he has done.

Missions

As part of a Masked Ones work for The Contractor, he sends them out on various tasks. These missions might include passing on messages or scouting potential problems and dangers, but the most common type of mission is clearing out Waves and Rifts.

Waves (aka Disturbances)

A wave occurs when the barrier between worlds gets thin, making it possible for an object or a living thing to slip through. Waves are caused by either a powerful force of energy, or a very concentrated source of energy. For example, a very intense storm or other event might be a trigger, or a strong magic spell that was casted or gone wrong could be another. There are also cases when a natural occurring structure in nature can collect energy over time and eventually trigger a wave. For example a natural rock arch, a mushroom circle, or a tree or multiple trees forming a natural doorway. Even ancient ruins have been known to collect energy over time. Though waves can be predicted to some degree and prevented, there are just as many that can happen suddenly or slip through the cracks. Once something comes through, the energy used to get it across the barrier is used up, and it can’t go back the same way.

Rifts (aka Instabilities)

The next step up from a wave. While a wave occurs only in one world, a rift quite literally creates a tear in the barrier between the worlds, forming a two-way opening. When discovered, they must be closed up as soon as possible. Multiple Masked Ones are usually dispatched to deal with a rift, and to resolve any of the aftermath in one or both worlds. The appearance of one rift can easily lead to more being created, and if too many rifts appear and if they get too large, that’s when the realms will begin to collapse. There are three degree of rifts: first, second, and third.

Real Name:

Unknown

Alias/Title:

The Contractor

Age:

Physically, he appears to be in his 30’s. Outwardly his demeanor sometimes reflects this age, particularly around those he trusts and is close to. Other times, he seems ancient and cryptic.

Gender:

Male

Sexuality:

Unknown

Abilities:

The full scope of his powers are unknown. He is clearly very powerful and dabbles in a variety of powerful arcane arts, given that he can create objects like the masks that he gives to his Masked Ones, close up the Rifts between worlds, and maintain a manor with magically enchanted features. But much like the others of his kind, no one is entirely sure what they are capable of or where they came from.

Weapons of Choice:

The Contractor is never really seen with a weapon, aside from a small, matte black knife he keeps on his person. Most of the time he appears to only use his magic abilities, and he rarely enters a conflict himself. Some of the older Masked Ones, however, claim that they have seen him holding a handgun: a black and silver revolver with intricate embellishments on the grip and barrel.

Though not a weapon, the silver pocket watch The Contractor always carries is another symbol of his power. It is a magic item, and the main object used in forming contracts. A few of his Masked Ones know that the time shown on the watch varies, and rarely shows an accurate time of day. Only he knows what the times on the watch face mean. Many speculate that the time on his watch will change to track the time left in each of the contracts made with him.

Appearance:

The Contractor is almost always seen wearing a pitch black, three piece suit. All accessories such as his dress shirt, shoes, tie, handkerchief, and signature trilby hat are black as well. His clothes are always immaculate; not a scuff, stain, or wrinkle to be seen. Upon closer inspection, one can notice small, intricate patterns stitched with fine, shiny black thread on the lapels and cuffs of his suit jacket. Some of these designs can also be found on his tie and handkerchief. He always wears an ornate silver pocket watch. It’s clipped to the front of his vest by a shiny silver chain and resides in his front vest pocket.

He is tall, standing at around 6 feet 3 inches. His frame is slim and athletic, but doesn’t seem to feature any outstanding muscle. He is more wiry and fit. The Contractor is often wearing sleek leather gloves, but in the times he removes them one can see his skin is pale and white. Not unusually so, but it is as if his skin rarely sees the sunlight. His hands and nails are perfectly kept, fingers long like a pianists, and the veins on the back of his hands are quite pronounced. His hair, from what one can see beneath his hat at the back of his neck, is a dark charcoal, cut short, always neat and appearing freshly trimmed.

The Contractor’s trilby hat seems to have the unique ability of always keeping his face in the shadows, making it hard to distinguish any clear features. He appears to have an angularly shaped face, with a sharp jawline and distinct cheekbones. Sometimes, one can catch a glimpse of his eyes. Nobody can agree on their color, but all can see the glint of power in his gaze. But also a touch of sorrow, and maybe even a bit of warmth there too.

Personality:

The first thing most people will say about The Contractor is that he is mysterious and aloof, and perhaps a bit intimidating. While these are certainly not wrong, those who have been around him longer have noticed a bit more. He is very formal in demeanor, always cool, courteous, and well-mannered. Nobody has ever seen him flustered or caught off guard. Meticulous and hard working, nobody has ever really seen The Contractor resting or relaxing in any way either. It’s almost as if he doesn’t have time for any leisure. He appears to be goal-driven, and people often get the sense that he is working towards something, but what his motives are or what that end goal is can be anyone’s guess.

No matter what anyone else might say about him, his Masked Ones and those who serve in Tsoka Manner know that he is a gentleman and a man of his word. Very rarely, if one is lucky, they might even catch brief glimpses of a sense of humor in his words or actions. He has never treated anyone under his employ unkindly, and has always been fair and just in his decisions. Above all, The Contractor has never once broken a contract. In addition, he seems to care a great deal for those that work under him. Many have witnessed him entering the room where all masks are kept, particularly the section where the broken masks of those who have passed on reside. He spends time visiting each one and honoring their memory.
