Estelle knew it was going to happen. It was almost like a shift in the atmosphere the second she was settled into her car, like the universe just warning her about her coming defeat. She just chose not to heed it. Now, sitting in her car with a white-knuckled grip on the steering wheel and wide eyes, she let out a gentle sigh. Her chest was heaving and it felt like she'd just ran a marathon from the amount of adrenaline in her body. Fuck. She lost, and she had a bet to uphold. Slowly, Estelle leaned back in her seat, leather creaking a bit. The cheers outside were not for her. They sounded muffled, almost like they were in another room. Her heartbeat was pounding so hard in her ears it was the only thing she could clearly make out.

125 beats per minute. Very abnormal, caused by a condition she was diagnosed with years ago. It was comforting and calming, in a way, almost like it was a reminder she was alive and living in the moment. Except, she wasn't quite living in the moment right now. Her head was pounding, her hazy vision focused on the steering wheel with the galloping horse. The horse. A sign and symbol of power the car held, yet it failed her this time. Slowly, with shaky hands, Estelle managed to reach over and open up her door. No point in being a sore loser, right? Estelle hadn't even registered the fact her feet were on the ground, and the fact she was nearly about to collapse. Racing was never good for her. It put her body into overdrive, causing highly negative effects. Too much adrenaline combined with an already high heart rate was not good at all.

Estelle leaned slowly back against her car, blinking a few times as if to regain her bearings. This was nothing out of the ordinary after a race. Above the beating of her heart and the cheering of the crowd, she heard a familiar voice. God fucking damn it. She'd hoped that Viona forgot about that stupid bet. What if she just didn't fulfill her end? It's not like anything bad would happen to her. Viona couldn't just force her to give away her personal information. She wasn't ready to deal with that cocky, smug woman right now. Estelle slowly turned her head when Viona approached, an almost dazed look on her face and in her eyes.

Racing wasn't good for her. Anything that put her under intense stress wasn't good. Racing coupled with waitressing made it even worse. "Okay.. can you shut up now? I fucking get it, okay?" Estelle snapped in a nasty tone, clearly both agitated and completely out of it. But Viona kept going. By this point, she was grinding her teeth together and clasping her hands together to prevent her anger from bubbling over. While Viona was clearly and rightfully in a good mood, it only seemed to make Estelle even angrier.

Not once had she been this mad over losing. Slowly, Estelle turned her head back to fully look up at Viona. The mention of Jos, her 'girlfriend' had really done it. "Don't you dare bring her into this. Go bug someone else, why don't you? I'm not the only loser, asshole. Just fucking-" Estelle kept rambling on, tone getting increasingly more angry. That was until she felt something being dropped on her head, and she stopped immediately. Bringing her hands up, she felt what it was. That damn cowboy hat. She opened her mouth again to speak, like some sort of yapping dog, and then something hit her.

The cowboy hat rule.

Estelle immediately stopped her barking and just stopped and stared, mouth slightly agape. She wasn't even mad about having her nose rubbed in her loss like some sort of dog. Now she was just oddly shocked and confused. Wearing someone else's cowboy hat, no matter if you put it on or they did, meant you had to sleep with them. "Did you.. just.." Estelle stuttered out, speaking like she'd forgotten the English language. Her cocky, flirty demeanor from earlier was long gone. She couldn't even recover in time to make some sort of sultry remark.

"Nevermind. Give me your phone." She mumbled, reaching one of her hands up to brush some loose hair back. Surprisingly, she didn't just take the damn hat off and throw it to the ground. Maybe some part of her enjoyed the idea of it. Instead of waiting for the phone to be handed to her, Estelle reached out and snatched it from Viona. Turning the screen towards her, but keeping a firm grip, she just stared at her expectantly. "Put your password in." She grumbled, voice full of utter defeat. It was only fair she kept up her end of the deal. To her left side, she heard a familiar voice calling her name.

Honeyed voice ringing out in the crowd, the only thing she heard. Josephine. She didn't win, but she still knew she'd have a good night when she went home. The pretty woman eventually found her way over, wide smile on her face until she saw who was standing right in front of Estelle. Josephine wrapped both arms around her waist, nuzzling her nose into Estelle's neck. "That guy over there looked pretty pissed. Guess he doesn't like when women are better than him." She giggled softly, pressing a few sloppy kisses to Estelle's neck. Leaving a few lipstick marks, a little trail of saliva between each kiss.

It was on purpose. Josephine didn't like it when Estelle talked to other women, even if they weren't even together. Hell, they were hardly friends, really. Only when it was convenient for one of them. Josephine's hands dipped lower on her waist, finding the bottoms of her hips and brushing along the tattooed skin. Lower, lower, and lower until her hands were nearly on the button of Estelle's shorts. Josephine fully turned her head, lips pressed against the skin below her ear. The things she whispered were absolutely heinous. "Come on, get off. Don't embarrass me in front of my new friend." Estelle offered a little half-smirk to Viona, some of her flirty charm regained.

Josephine reluctantly let go, hands lingering. "Go on. You know where I expect you to be." Estelle muttered, watching as the girl skipped off. Now, her full attention was back to Viona. She didn't care much for the encounter, knowing full well Josephine was only attempting to make Viona jealous. Did she succeed? Estelle didn't know. "You know, you're lucky for this. But leave me the fuck alone after this so I can have a peaceful night." Estelle huffed, although it was only feigned annoyance now. God, she really needed to get her emotions under control.

The more Stella’s mood worsened, the better Viona felt. She snapped and bit at Viona, much like a feral dog lacking a leash, and she reveled in every moment. Truly, her comments did not even hold a candle to the ones she had made in the past, but they angered her nonetheless, and she took pride in that. She may have preferred to make her targets fall apart in her bed, but she relished in watching Stella’s self-control crumble in her anger. It was a glorious show filled with curses and other obscenities. Viona didn’t understand why she hadn’t challenged her to a bet sooner.

Stella’s falter at the cowboy hat caused Viona to laugh. It was a genuine, pretty sound that, for once, meant no harm. It was as if the woman before her seemed to short-circuit, and her brain blanked out like a computer’s blue error screen. All over a cowboy hat. The moment ended all too soon for Viona, and she soon had her phone snatched so that Stella could punch those coveted ten digits into her phone. Emerald irises glanced off to her right, where the now familiar form of Stella’s date came calling from the throng of onlookers, though Viona did not offer her a greeting.

As expected, the two began what she expected was a common display of rather deep affection. With an eye-roll and a snort, Viona snatched back her phone, taking it as a welcome distraction from the saliva trail down her rival's neck. She did offer a cocked brow as Stella called her a “friend”, all-too-judgmental eyes watching as more lipstick stains mottled the other woman’s skin. What was more puzzling, was that the pair was completely and utterly sober during this display, and Viona could not help but wonder what they looked like when drunk. Absolutely disgusting, she was sure.

“Me? Lucky?” She barked out a laugh as Stella’s attention returned to her, “You accepted the bet and lost. You could have just said no, or you could have bet five bucks. I wasn’t lucky, I was fucking flawless out there.” Her acrylics tapped against her phone as she finished off Stella’s contact, the woman aptly dubbed “My Little Star” in her digital profile, with a downward-facing arrow next to her name to indicate her shortness. She could only imagine the face Stella would make, and the scoff that would blow from her mouth if she saw it. She liked that image.

Nimble fingers hooked themselves through the denim belt loops of her all-too-short shorts, and she pulled them higher on her soft, pillowy hips. She shoved her phone into her back pocket, more than pleased by her prize and ready to spend her night celebrating her hard-won victory with lots of tequila. “Leave you alone? I don’t remember that being a part of our deal, but I’ll think about it.” She chuckled, knowing full well that she wouldn’t bug Stella while she was busy rearranging furniture with her date. Viona may be a raging bitch, but she still respected girl code.

“Not going to the club with the rest of us? How boring!” Fingers ran through her hair in an attempt to detangle the curls and settle the frizz that her hat had created. “It is a Saturday night, even my grandmother is getting out of the damn house.” Stella always seemed responsible, save for the street racing, and frankly, her self-control was quite annoying. Viona spent her weekends living life like there was no tomorrow. Come Monday, she would be a completely different person, and she doubted anyone here could possibly recognize her during the week.

She was disappointed by Stella’s want for a “peaceful night”. There was no fun in that. Not when there was liquor and dancing to be had. “If you were going, I may have offered you a chance to redeem yourself.” She twirled a curl around her index finger, pausing to rake her gaze over the woman before her, whose appearance she felt was now complete with the addition of her hat. “I love to drink on a good wager… but I forget you have to get back to the retirement home before curfew. I’m sure they’ll offer you some mashed peas as a midnight snack to go alongside your thickened water.”

Her eyes wandered around the slowly dispersing crowd, and she knew it was time to leave. She had her bet money to collect, followed by a short drive to the club where she had a bar waiting for her to bleed dry. Her opportunities to annoy her rival were fading, but it did not mean there wasn’t a fantastic night ahead of her. She would dance the night away and end it in a stranger’s bed. All would be right in her world. “I suppose this is where I bid you good night, my little star. Remember to take your vitamins and wear your compression socks, yeah?” She chuckled at the thought, and she began to step away.

Viona gave the woman a small wave, her knuckles still boasting the smudged lipstick from when she had kissed her hand earlier. She liked Estelle. It was something she would never admit, but the woman was as funny as she was flirty, and she enjoyed their brief bouts of company. She was far different from the racers that surrounded her, which could be why she was so drawn to a change of pace. V never tried to think too hard on her opinions of Stella, as she feared she would be tempted to make a decision that could ruin their odd relationship entirely.

“Oh!” She exclaimed, pausing in her departure to wiggle her perfectly arched brows at the other woman, “And try not to get an STD! I hear they are rampant at those facilities.”

Estelle just stared at Viona, left eye twitching slightly in annoyance. She really was insufferable. It wasn't that Estelle hated Viona, she'd already decided that. She just wasn't able to handle the relentless teasing and the way Viona rubbed her nose in her defeat. She was hyper aware of the hat on her head, making her shoulders tense and an even more agitated look to come across her features. Estelle wasn't one to get worked up like this so easily. But there was just something about Viona, and about the way she was easily growing overstimulated. Today had just been an off day, and she wished she never showed up to the stupid race. Her hands clenched and unclenched at her sides, nails digging deeply into her soft, sweaty palms.

Estelle could see the crowd of people out of the corner of her eye, watching their every move. Some exchanging soft whispers, curious stares and little nudges. She couldn't wait to get back to her apartment. To just have a nice, hot shower and immediately collapse into her cozy bed. To get away from the buzz of the crowd and the intense agitation filling her body. Jos's presence had been fairly appreciated, having an almost blanket-like calming effect. Until she was gone again, the only trace being the drying saliva and little lipstick smudges. It wasn't love. It would never be love, would it? She knew that. But she didn't want to accept that. Hearing the harsh laugh of Viona, the soft look that had come over her face immediately twisted into a scowl.

Her hands settled on her hips, shifting her weight to one of her feet. "I didn't have to be so polite and uphold the bet. You know, anybody else would've said fuck you and walked away." Estelle grumbled, French accent more than a cute little twist on her words now. No, it was full on. She was on the verge of shifting her words completely to French so that Viona couldn't understand a thing she was saying. It wasn't such a bad idea, was it? It's not like Viona knew French or anything. She was almost sure of it. Estelle's gaze trailed down to Viona's hips as she pulled her shorts up a little, unable to tear her gaze away. Viona had pretty hips. For a split second, Estelle was tempted to reach out and take hold of them.

What?

No, she didn't just think that. Absolutely not. Estelle let out a heavy groan, reaching two fingers up to pinch the bridge of her freckled nose. Like a little bridge of constellations, each unique in their own respective way. Her parents could not have chosen a better name than Estelle. The way her eyes resembled the sky and were full of stars, the freckles that could've been star dust. Destined to be a star, but falling horribly flat. She just stared up at Viona now, a bitchy look on her face. "Tell me, Viona, why in the actual fuck would I go celebrate my defeat? Maybe if someone else had won.." Estelle let out a half snort, half chuckle. Truthfully, she would've loved to see the look on Viona's face if the roles were reversed. Would she be a better sport, or an even sorer loser?

"I have better things to be doing. Much better things." Estelle gazed up at Viona, the city lights reflecting in her eyes. She slowly examined Viona's eyes, like she was searching for something within her soul. Her expression softened only a little before it immediately hardened again. An orange streetlight shimmered over both of them, bathing them in a pretty glow. She was pretty. Too pretty. Was pretty even the right word anymore? Estelle hasn't even realized she just staring deeply into Viona's eyes like she was trying to put some sort of wicked spell on the taller woman. She had simply just gotten lost in the way they looked like freshly polished emeralds. "As if. You're just trying to drag me along." Estelle grumbled, rolling her eyes with a dramatic huff.

She wasn't as angry anymore. For now. Her feelings changed at the drop of a hat, like a kid trying to decide what kind of candy they wanted. As soon as she watched the way Viona's eyes raked over her, she felt an immediate rush of heat spread throughout her body and settle into the bottom of her stomach. Why was she looking at her like that? It almost seemed too sensual to be teasing. She was hardly even mad at the verbal teasing now. Estelle just shrugged, casting a glance to the side. "How'd you know? I get real cranky when I don't get my midnight snack. Time for me to go, yeah?" It wasn't so much of an annoyed tone anymore.

The crowd had been dwindling, everyone bored with their non aggressive display. Half of the time, the crowd expected to see them going at each other with tooth and claw like wild dogs. It never really was the case. A few insults thrown around, some teasing, but never anything particularly upsetting. Her hands wandered to her stomach, gently tracing the lines of her tattoo with her nails. A common habit of self comfort, an unconscious action. She didn't have to look down to know the exact lines of that tattoo. Every little curve of the skull, the exact length of the antlers as they graced her hips. "Thanks for the reminder. I was scared I was going to forget." Estelle grumbled, watching as Viona began to step away.

With the little wave, she could see her smudged lipstick still on her hand. It brought a small, genuine smile to her lips. Estelle could be as flirty or as mean as she wanted, but it would never define her true feelings towards Viona. It wasn't hatred. It wasn't dislike, and it wasn't fondness. So what was it? Figuring out her own feelings was an absolute nightmare. Estelle simply watched her go, raising a brow as Viona suddenly stopped in her tracks. "You fucker.." She groaned under her breath, blinking in annoyance a few times. But now, watching her walk away, Estelle felt the intense pull to call out and stop her. To go with her. She reached her hand out a little bit, fingertips twitching with the desire to gently take hold of her hand like she had done earlier.

"Wait.." Estelle mumbled quietly, so quietly she couldn't even hear herself. Slowly, she turned back to her car, reaching down to open the door. She just had to find Jos and get the hell out of here. But still, that pull was getting stronger and stronger. It was almost a complete battle of logic and reason and desire. But why?

It was yet another thing she wouldn’t admit, but the tattoos that were spread across Estelle’s body intrigued Viona. They seemed to be dotted everywhere, even where you least expected it. They were all different, but they seemed to fit her well. She watched with a surprisingly innocent curiosity as the woman’s fingers followed the shapes and lines that created the deer skull whose form was painted across her skin. Viona only had one particularly massive tattoo, and everyone she spoke to thought she was insane for getting a back piece of that size as her first. Viona always told them that her mama didn’t raise a quitter.

She had started to giggle softly as she finally turned away to leave, the typically elegant, mature woman taking a moment to childishly imagine her rival in the absurd scenes she had described. When Stella cursed at her, her quiet chuckles evolved into far less attractive snorts, though nobody was close enough to hear her. It was not often that Viona used anything but a practiced, fake laugh outside of the comforts of her home, but she felt a little more genuine around the only other woman she raced against, despite the heated exchanges and insults they often shared between each other.

Viona had raced against Stella for quite a long time, and though they much preferred to make fun of each other over exchanging pleasantries, there was an odd version of trust she felt stretched between them. Every so often, the taller of the pair would test it almost absentmindedly by showing off bits and pieces of the person she kept carefully under wraps. Never once had Estelle made fun of her for that. Maybe they pushed each other's buttons and infuriated each other in ways that no one else could, but they never actually caused hurt.

It was while she was standing there, narrowed eyes searching for the man who always handled the bets, as well as Matthias, who she was hoping would meet her at the club, her phone began to ring. The familiar chime grated on her ears and she was most certainly not happy to be disturbed. With a sigh, she pulled the device back out and immediately groaned as the name “Dipshit” illuminated her screen. Clearly, Viona was creative with her contact names, and this one just so happened to belong to her brother, who happened to resemble her in a lot of ways.

For example, they were both rather… aggressive. “And here I thought you were never going to pick up.” He spoke when she accepted the call.

“Yeah, cause I don’t want to talk to you,” She huffed, “Your voice makes my ears bleed.”

He scoffed, and she could picture him rolling his eyes on the other end of the phone. “Fuck you, V. You’re such a fucking-” She held the phone away from her ear as he went on a brief tirade. Right before she had left their family home for her race, the pair had gotten into an argument over something she could not even remember.

Evidently, he was not over it. “Victor, is this what you called me about? If so, are you done? I don’t give a shit and have plans.” She rolled her eyes and tapped her foot in annoyance. Although it may not have seemed like it, they did actually love one another. They just had an odd way of showing it.

“God, I am going to gift your entire shoe collection to the Salvation Army… and feed your favorite Burberry dress to the dog.” He threatened, and she could hear a door slam in the background.

The way she snarled was truly animalistic, and it was a miracle she did not sprout fangs and claws. “Stay away from my shit, Victor! Why did you even call me if you were just going to be a little bitch about it?!” The hand that had propped itself on her hip seemed to clench around her pale skin, nails digging into the tender flesh.

“Dad wanted me to call you about the timeline for the deal we’re working on together, I guess he’s at the office right now. I told him you were too busy selling your ass on the corner to be bothered by us,” He paused as Viona started to fill the line with threats of murder and castration, “but he insisted I give you a call.” Briefly, they began to discuss the deal they were trying to secure that would expand their business into some surrounding areas. For the Lane siblings, this deal was going to be their biggest project yet, and for Viona, it would help her get even closer to that CEO position.

“Wait…”

It was soft, and it would have gone unheard had Viona not been stopped by the unexpected phone call. She fell silent as she glanced behind her to see Stella heading back towards her car. Why would she have said that? Viona didn't know, but it didn't hurt to find out, didn't it? “I'll call you back, Vic. I've got an ass to sell, remember? And you can't afford my time, you broke fuck.” This time, her brother was laughing as hung up the phone, and all was right in the world with the the dynamic duo. Since there was only a year between them, they had been fighting and making up longer than even they could remember.

She spun on her heel, and her eyes rested again on Estelle. “What exactly am I waiting for, my little star?” There was no teasing in her voice, just curiosity. “You know, you said you had nothing to celebrate, but personally, I think losses taste better with martinis, especially if they are of the espresso variety.” She shrugged and glanced off in the direction of her car, which had a few stragglers still loitering around it, no doubt men looking for a chance to secure their place in her bed. “Who knows, I may even be convinced to buy you a midnight snack. Better than mashed peas and STDs.”

She fiddled gently with the ends of her hair, something she did when she didn’t quite know what to say. Viona knew how to tease, insult, and relatively be annoying when it came to Stella, but holding a semi-normal conversation? That was rather uncharted territory. “If you take more free shots than I do, I may also be willing to delete your phone number, but that’s up to you.” It was more of a joke than anything, since Viona had a feeling there would be no winner of that competition, and they would forget who was even ahead while they threw up in a questionable, crusty club bathroom.

“Unless your date is there, then I think I may give you a wide berth. I think she cares more about you ‘having a little fun’ than she lets on.” Viona may have distracted herself with her phone, but she knew possessiveness when she saw it, and it seemed both Estelle and her little girlfriend were chock full of it. “But, anyway, come to the club, or go be a boring little grandma and lick your wounds.” She began to swing her keys around again as she stepped away from Stella, and like clockwork, she allowed the keys to be conveniently flung behind her. With a look filled with mischief, she spun on her heels…

and made a goddamn show of picking up those stupid keys.

Estelle slowly paused her movements, taking a moment to gaze up towards the sky once more. Almost hoping to see the stars, half expecting them to be there no matter how many times she's looked. Her hand half furled around the door handle, deciding whether she should just leave the situation alone or engage in it. Her gaze shifted down to her tattooed fingers, trembling slightly. There was no reason in particular for her to be so angered about the defeat. Normally she would've brushed it off and gave congratulations. It's like some sort of new found anger crawled its way into her bloodstream and settled there, perpetually messing with her feelings. Or, perhaps she was just in a bad moon and this had simply worsened it. With Estelle, nobody ever knew what was up with her.

Estelle gave a quiet huff as she heard Viona's giggles as she was turning to leave. And then, her head perked up as soon as she heard a ringing phone. Was it hers? No, that wasn't her ringtone. She fully turned her head with a raised brow, staring at Viona's back. Not that Estelle would ever admit such a thing, but Viona was pretty from the back, too. Estelle didn't exactly think too fondly of her, but there was no denying her beauty. Or, well, maybe she did think fondly of her. It just depended on the situation, really. Eavesdropping on Viona was not something she thought she'd get to experience. Instead of just getting in her car and getting the hell out of this shithole, she stayed.

Estelle listened to the conversation for a moment, immediately shocked at the foul slew of words that left Viona's mouth. So, she was like that with everyone? That was a relief. She slowly opened her car door, giving a small tug as she tuned out the rest of the conversation. No point on trying to listen in on something she didn't understand. The smell of the vanilla scented air freshener was welcomed as it hit her face, wafting to her nose. Her little voice had gone unheard, as expected. At least, she thought so. The voice of Viona suddenly addressing her made her slowly turn her head, staring at the pretty woman like she'd just said the most heinous insult.

How did she manage to hear her? "Me. You're waiting on me," Estelle began slowly, picking her words carefully, "and I suppose you're right. What's the harm in celebrating my bestest friend?" She giggled softly, putting great emphasis on the words 'bestest friend.' Estelle half-turned her body, tilting her head at Viona. Did she truly ever have anything nice to say? The teasing and insults were to be expected, but she hadn't really ever hear Viona say anything different. Not that she minded, of course. Sometimes the teasing got her going. "Really? You'd do that, for me?" Estelle's giggles grew a little more excited, her hands moving to gently fold in front of her waist.

She watched as Viona fiddled with the ends of her curls, earning a raised brow from Estelle. Viona had never once showed any signs of nervousness. But now, it was only them around, other than the few stragglers. There was no crowd to impress. "Oh, nobody said anything about that. I think it's kind of cute that you have my number, actually. It's like your way of saying you actually want something to do with me other than racing." Estelle offered a soft smile, keeping her voice gentle. Maybe she could confuse Viona by being nice and holding her tongue. Maybe then she'd get some sort of genuine reaction. Estelle made it a personal mission to do so.

Her hands remained folded at her waist, thumbs slowly rubbing across each other. Her feelings were beginning to calm down and she was becoming more sensible again. At the mention of Jos, she gave a little eye roll. "No worries. I'll come alone if it means I get to celebrate you, up close and personal." Her gaze was settled intensely on Viona, searching for even the smallest sign of nervousness again. It was just odd to her. She wasn't even aware of where Jos was, so it's not like that would be any sort of problem. She'd personally make sure of it. Now she watched as Viona slowly turned and took a step away, swinging her keys around.. flinging them behind her. Lord.

Estelle made no effort to avert her gaze as she watched Viona turn around, bending to pick up the keys. Estelle was sure she looked like one of those creepy men, staring and enjoying every little bit of the show Viona put on. She fought back making some sort of cocky little remark, not daring to give Viona the attention she wanted. Not yet. "Suppose I'll see you there. Not that I want to or anything.." Estelle let out a loud, overly dramatic sigh before it was broken by giggles. Casting a final glance to Viona, she turned herself again and ducked into her car, settling into the comfortable leather. It would definitely do her some good to get out and do something instead if moping back at her apartment.

It never killed a woman to her a little too drunk for her own good and let the night guide her. It could end up being good, or end in her crying in a bathroom she's never been in and never will be in again. But definitely not in someone else's bed. She wasn't that type of woman, even if the idea tempted her. Estelle slowly turned her key in the ignition, inhaling that strong scent of vanilla again. Her hands were rested on the steering wheel as she let out a deep sigh. A small part of her was genuinely curious about Viona. What if they were never rivals, and were friends instead? Would things be the same?

The thought crossed her mind more often than she liked to admit. It was just genuine curiosity. She wondered the same thing about if she had stayed in France. Her life there was a shitshow, and it was here, too. Life was never kind to her and it felt like it never would be. Those espresso martinis seemed especially tempting now more than ever with every passing second that she recalled the times life wasn't kind. Estelle turned her head to glance out the window, half hoping to see Viona again. It was an odd sort of fascination she felt every time she thought about the taller woman. How did she live? What did she do in her free time? Now she really just couldn't get her stupid mind off of Viona. She had to find these things out or it'd drive her mad.

Oh shit.

Stella was giggling and Viona did not like the way it made her second-guess everything she ever felt about her rival. That wasn’t good. Bad Viona. Bad.

“...if it means I get to celebrate you, up close and personal.”

Fuck.

How did she do that? When did the tables start to turn? She didn’t know, but they needed to stop right fucking now. Her brain buzzed as she secured her keys once more and she played gently with the lanyard, rubbing the familiar fabric between her fingertips. Her gaze was calm and her posture was relaxed, but there was nothing calm or relaxed about her mind in those moments. Viona hated losing, and she was certainly not going to lose to Stella in a battle of flirtatious wits. That was absolutely not an option, and Viona would make sure her small panic went unnoticed.

“Don’t want to see me?” She retorted with a scoff as her bright green eyes narrowed in Stella’s direction, “Oh, you are in such denial, my little star. I bet you dream of me…” She trailed, pink tongue darting out to lick her plump lips that were left chapped from the race, “surrounded by nothing but you and your bedsheets.” There was a little bit of redness to her face, but if Stella had dared call her out on it, Viona would blame it on the heat. Viona did not blush, and she certainly was not going to give Stella the satisfaction of having that honor.

She chuckled and began to step away once more as Stella started to leave herself. “I bet it drives you mad, Stella.” She blew a kiss in her direction, and despite it being a playful gesture, it was most certainly charged by sinful ideas, “You hate that you want the person who gets on your nerves the most… and you hate that you like the attention I give you.” Did she know if she was right? Not in the slightest, but deep down, she hoped she was. “I’ll see you there… and maybe I will let you get up close and personal… you never know. I can get quite carried away when I celebrate.” With a final wave, she was off to collect her money, and meet her rival at the nearest club.

Hopefully after a few drinks, she would forget about how Estelle’s giggles warmed her to the core. Those were thoughts she could absolutely not be having.

~~~~~~~
At the Club…
With a wad of bet money tucked in the back pocket of her daisy dukes, Viona entered club as if it had been waiting just for her arrival. She flung the doors open with an anticipatory grin and took a deep, long breath. The smell of liquor and smoke with a whiff of sweat filled her lungs, and there was something oddly comforting about it. It was like she had finally been welcomed home, and she was fully intending to take advantage of the bar filled with men and women ripe for the picking. Only one would be worthy enough for her bed, but the rest could buy her a drink… or twelve.
Every weekend was the same. She spent her nights in clubs scattered around the city, spending her race money on expensive drinks while she relished in tantalizing company. It never seemed to get old. There was always a new adventure to have and a new partner to conquer. She liked to live life on the edge, and God did she toe that line hard. But no matter what situation she managed to get herself into, or what hole she managed to dig herself, somehow, some way, Viona Lane always managed to emerge smelling like roses. No one would ever dare tell her for fear of fueling her already exceptional ego, but she was damn impressive.
She weaved through the sea of bodies that filled the floor, the warmth of the space tickling her ivory skin in the most delectable of ways. She slid into a barstool, her bare thighs sticking to the smooth leather as she settled. A content sigh escaped her and she was happy to have a chance to unwind. As much as she loved it, the physical toll from all the tension and adrenaline that came from racing was exhausting, and clubbing just so happened to be the perfect pick-me-up. Tonight would be even better, she had decided, because Stella was meant to be joining her.
“What can I getcha?” The woman behind the bar asked with an infectious smile, her bob bouncing as she tilted her head in Viona’s direction.
Clicking her tongue against the roof of her mouth, the red-haired woman contemplated her options with a hum, and she decided she wanted to start off her night strong. “I’ll have a vodka cranberry, please.” She settled, sliding her debit card across the counter, “And I would like to start a tab. Viona Lane.” The bartender nodded and spun around to go make her drink, leaving her patron alone again, not that she minded. V was never alone for long, and tonight was no exception. The countertop was cool under her fingers as she turned herself around to face the dance floor, long, faintly freckled legs crossed one over the other.
The building seemed to vibrate as music blasted from expensive speakers, and her heart seemed to thrum in time with the beat of the melody. While she waited for her drink, she took a moment to reapply her lipstick, as the night’s events had left it lackluster. Of course, with modern makeup came lines of lip products that did not fade with every drink or whenever one needed to wet their lips. Viona was more than aware of such advancements, however, she was keen to ignore them. She liked the way her lips would perfectly mark the skin of her partners, so that the world would know they belonged to the She-Devil, and the She-Devil only
“Here’s your drink, ma’am.” A voice spoke from behind her, and Viona could not help but cringe slightly at the formality. Did she look that old? Still, she turned around and took the drink with a smile, and she could not help the soft groan as she took a sip. Damn. That was good. She supposed she could let the “ma’am” comment slide, since this girl clearly knew what she was doing. Perhaps it wouldn’t hurt to have a bartender on her rotation…
“Anything else I can get you?”
With a shake of her head, Viona began to politely decline, thanking the woman for her drink before she suddenly paused. “Actually, wait,” She hesitated and glanced toward the door, biting gently on her bottom lip, “I’ll take an espresso martini, and make it extra dirty.”
Once Viona was out of sight, Estelle immediately rested her head on the steering wheel and let out a quiet scream, her cheeks flushed. She could feel butterflies fluttering around her stomach, begging to be set free. That little pit that was only caused by one feeling. Sometimes, Viona's teasing truly did get to her. But she'd never let Viona know. After a moment of recollection, she slowly leaned back in her seat and let out a huff. Viona's car was already gone. Estelle slowly reached for her seatbelt, slipping it on as she glanced around. She wasn't totally alone, there were still a few people loitering nearby. It took her a moment to slowly back her car out of the place it was in, and head onto the main road.
Of course, a car like hers turned many heads. It wasn't often someone saw one of them, especially in a pretty pink color. The thing definitely wasn't street legal at this point but she was never pulled over, thankfully. She'd never been to the club Viona had brought up, but knew where it was. One hand was rested on the bottom of the steering wheel, her manicured nails tapping against it. Her other hand was rested on her thigh, tracing small circles on her own skin. It wasn't a good idea to race such an old car, given that the parts are not replaceable and if she wrecked, it was gone forever. Not that it stopped her, though. Her gaze was keen, focusing on the buildings around her as she drove.
A few turns and stoplights, and she had made her way to the club. Pulling her car into a spot, putting it in park and taking her seatbelt off. Strangely, a part of her felt disgustingly nervous. A tight feeling in her chest that made her immediately think the worst. Nothing is going to happen to you. You're going to have a good night. She reminded herself, giving a small shake of her head for being so silly for even thinking something would happen. The attention would be on Viona, not her. She'd be nothing more than another stranger to everyone in the club, not someone who just won a race. Estelle slowly opened her door, using her foot to push it open from the bottom. Nervous. So nervous. Extremely nervous.
Its like she just couldn't help it. She reached into her center console, pulling out her favorite fruity scented perfume and giving herself a quick spritz. Estelle slowly dragged herself out of the car, standing up and shutting the door. She was really doing this. "You're okay.. you're okay... everything's fine.." She murmured softly to herself, gathering up the courage to actually go inside. Estelle was far too nervous and anxious for her own good sometimes. She forced herself to walk to the entrance of the club, hands shaky and her breathing uneven as she pushed open the door. Immediately, she was met with the smell of booze, smoke, and some mixed perfumes and colognes.
Giving the place a quick once-over, she didn't spot Viona yet. That was okay. She could find someone to talk to and calm her nerves. There was no need for any alcohol just yet. Estelle scanned the place more carefully, spotting a woman probably a little younger than her sitting in a booth off to the side. Estelle took a deep, heavy breath and forced her feet to move. Once at the booth, she laid a gentle hand on the table and offered a sweet smile. "This seat taken?" She asked with a slight cock of her head, earning a swift 'no' and a returned smile. She slid into the booth across from the woman, settling her hands into her lap. The woman did not seem to mind at all, welcoming her with an even wider smile.
"Don't recall seeing you around here. Name's Laura, you?" Laura had a very prominent accent, sounding like she was from New Jersey. Perfect. Two girls with funny accents that will most likely have a hard time understanding one another. "Estelle." She offered a smile back, leaning back into the soft cushion and letting her anxiety fade away. She never had much of a problem finding someone to cling onto for the night. She could have a little conversation, then wander off to find Viona. What an odd thing to say, she thought. Find her rival. "Where you from? You got one of them.. funny voices." Laura remarked with a wave of her hand, leaning forwards to examine Estelle.
"France. You're from.. let me guess, Jersey?" Estelle cocked her head, listening to the cute little giggles Laura gave. "Born and raised. But, what's a woman like you doing here? Shouldn't you be living it up in Paris or something like that?" Laura questioned, offering a small tilt of her head. Laura wasn't a bad looking woman, at least to Estelle's standards. She had dark hair and dark eyes, but a gentle look to her. "Nah. I've never been to Paris." Her words seemed to almost startle Laura, earning a gasp and a shocked look. "What?! Whaddya mean you've never been?" Laura leaned forwards even more, prompting small chuckles from Estelle. "Crazy, huh?" Laura eagerly nodded her head. "Damn straight it is!"
They had a few more shared giggles, both of them seeming to grow fairly comfortable with one another. Estelle kept an eye out, searching the club periodically to see where Viona may be lingering at. And that was when she saw her. Estelle's face immediately lit up, and she eagerly turned back to Laura. "Be back in a sec." Laura simply gave a shrug, watching as Estelle scurried out of her seat and towards the bar. Once there, she slowly approached Viona. Make her presence known by announcing it, or by a much more fun way? She made her choice pretty fast. Estelle crept up behind Viona, still far shorter than her despite the fact she was sitting down.
Her arms snaked around Viona's waist, feeling particularly smug tonight despite her loss. It wasn't a tight hold, allowing Viona to break free with ease if she chose to. She stood on her toes, resting her head on Viona's shoulder, lips close to her ear. "Hi there, She-Devil. Fancy seeing you here tonight." Estelle immediately erupted into giggles, unable to control herself. It wasn't normally the way she'd act. At all. But then again, Viona normally didn't invite her to clubs. Tonight was new territory and she wanted to test the waters. After a short moment, she released Viona from her hold but stayed close to her, slightly next to her and slightly behind her. She made the quick decision to hop onto the barstool next to her, not wanting to be swept away by the bustling crowd.
"Whatcha got there?" Estelle asked with a slight tilt of her head, pointing down to the glass Viona had in front of her. Maybe she'd buy Laura and herself a drink. Be polite and especially have someone to fall back onto if she didn't find anyone else to chat with. Playing things safe was her specialty in any setting.
A somewhat frustrated gaze stared at the freshly added contact that settled neatly on her phone screen, the woman contemplating sending out a text message to confirm the location of the club, as well as her spot within it. Of course, the contact in question was none other than Stella, and it bothered Viona that she was hesitant to text her. Hadn’t their deal been that V could text her whenever she wanted to, regardless of how Stella felt? She huffed and set her phone aside, clearly deciding to just wait for her companion, albeit impatiently.
When Viona felt arms settle around her waist, her entire body tensed and fingers closed around her drink, the woman poised and ready to drive away her assailant. However, creeps didn’t smell like vanilla and flowers, nor did they have barbed wire tattoos and acrylics. Estelle. She sighed in relief, though her bubbling anger was quickly replaced by a warmth that quickly pooled in her belly. Viona couldn’t let herself think too much about the way her arms felt against the soft skin of her torso, or the way her breath tickled her ear. Stella was off limits, she told herself, though it was much to her frustration.
Viona was not used to being denied anything by anyone, much less herself. Alas, she knew it was for the best. It didn’t mean she couldn’t enjoy it while it lasted. Even if Stella and her stupid giggles needed to be made illegal immediately. A gentle chuckle snuck its way through her lips as she turned her head in Stella’s direction, their noses brushing for a moment before her rival pulled away to settle into the stool beside her. Part of her was shocked that she had actually shown up. Hadn’t she been yelling at Viona a mere hour before? Stella continued to surprise her.
She took another sip of her drink and swirled her drink around, eyes following the pink concoction as it lapped at the sides of her glass. “Fancy seeing me here?” She swiveled in the stool to cock a brow at Stella, “I’m always out and about after races, my little star. Poke your head through the door of a few clubs ‘round here… and boom! You’ll find me. ‘Specially after races, but any weekend, really.” Viona watched Stella curiously for a few moments, and she wondered if she was the reason the woman had decided to come to the club. That was too self-absorbed, wasn’t it?
“It’s a vodka cranberry. Strong, tart, and damn good bang for your buck.” She leaned against the bar, and propped her chin up in one of her palms. Her fingertips tapped lazily against her cheek, as if the pair were out to a casual lunch instead of sitting at a bar after a highly illegal race through the city streets. “You strike me as the type who hates the taste of alcohol. How does that one song go?” She hummed for a moment as she tried to place the tune, “Ah, ‘buyin’ fruity little drinks ‘cause she can’t shoot whiskey’. That right?” Viona wouldn’t mention that she hated whiskey herself, despite being the heir to a whiskey empire.
She perked up as the bartender returned with the promised espresso martini in hand, and Viona was quick to slide the drink to Stella after she thanked the woman for her time. “Consider it a gift to help you drown your loss, but don’t get used to it. I am not the type to give for free.” Despite the smugness of her tone, the woman seemed at ease and far less uptight than she tended to be. Maybe it was the fact she had certain company, but if she was asked, she would blame it on the alcohol. “Oh, and I got it nice and dirty… just how you like it. Hopefully, it is not as bitter as you when you lose.”
Frankly, Viona didn’t know if she could actually hold a real conversation with Stella that was not based on insults or teasing, but in those moments, she did try to some degree, hoping to keep the mood more playful than anything. “So tell me, what exactly are you planning on doing here tonight, hmm?” She asked, only pausing to finish her drink and order another, “Besides basking in my otherworldly company, of course. Surely you must have another good reason to stay out past your curfew and shirk your vitamins.” Once again, she couldn’t help a snort at the mental image of her tattooed, pierced, and rather spicy rival living amongst the geriatric. Her humor could be quite lame, to tell the truth.
“So, my little senior,” She stifled a giggle at her own wordplay, “Will I see you in a week at the next race? Maybe we can make another private wager…” She drawled. Would Stella want privacy as her prize once more? Viona’s brow furrowed slightly as she looked Stella over and the woman seemed almost… happy? Happy with Viona’s company, and that was about as much of a shock as Stella’s hug had been. “But!” She added quickly, “Only if you pick something fun. None of that boring, ‘leave me alone’ shit.” There was a soft laugh as she pushed some hair from her face, and her catlike eyes seemed to sparkle through the shadows cast across her chiseled features.
Estelle noticed the way Viona tensed up whenever she gave her the hug, a smug look creeping up onto her face. She was very, very tempted to keep her arms there, but figured it was too extreme. Their noses brushing against each other as she pulled away brought about a small blush, but she quickly looked away as soon as she hopped up onto the barstool. It was a miracle she'd even decided to show up here, especially without Jos. But, she felt oddly happy about her choice. She didn't regret it yet. Estelle leaned forwards, resting her elbows on the bar and placing her head in her hands as she looked over at Viona. It was dim, but there was a splash of neon from the bar shining on her face, lighting half of her up.
Her gaze wasn't judgmental in the slightest. Rather, it seemed almost to be one of admiration, and contemplation. Estelle longed to see Viona in a normal setting for once. Not an illegal race, not at a club or at a bar. She wondered if it would be the final step to hating or liking Viona. Whenever Viona swiveled in the stool, Estelle's little grin came back. "I was being sarcastic, stupid." She chuckled with a soft shake of her head and a little roll of her eyes. "You out of all people should know that." Estelle slowly sat up straight, shifting on the stool and pushing her hips forwards a little bit. Her hands moved to her thighs, resting down on the inside near her knees. One hand moved up to her hair, giving it a few run throughs to make sure it wasn't horribly tangled.
Her hands were ever-moving, unable to stay in one spot for too long. "Of course. Basic choice." Estelle gave a dramatic eye roll, as well as an annoyed huff. But she wasn't able to keep up her dramatic reaction for long, letting a few chuckles slip after a few seconds. She was half tempted to take a sip of Viona's drink but immediately made the decision that would be taking it too far. For all she knows, Viona doesn't even like her. And she certainly wouldn't be too happy if someone she didn't like decided to take a sip of her drink. But, then again, why would Viona invite her if she didn't like her? Too many questions, and no answers.
"Oh, darling.. I hate to break it to you. But I'm not the one with a fruity little drink right now." Estelle gave a stupid grin, fully turning her head to look at Viona now. Leave it to her to have stupid methods of teasing. She was about to make some other dumb comment before the bartender turned back to the pair, giving a rather interesting drink to Viona, who promptly slid it her way. Estelle raised a brow, cocking her had at Viona before she examined the drink. She was no doubt thankful for it. "Well, thank you." Her tone was genuine, losing the smugness to it for just a moment before Viona spoke those next words.
Estelle blinked a few times, gazing over at her. "You know, something's telling me that you drugged this. Or are trying to get me drunk enough to drug me. You can just ask if you wanna take me home, you know." One hand gently closed around the drink, gazing down at it with genuine appreciation. Who needed men to buy drinks for them when she had Viona? She was rich enough to not care about little bit of money loss. And she was certain she could sneak a few more out of her, but she wasn't going to. Estelle raised the glass to her lips, taking a small sip before making a small face. Too strong for her liking, but she wasn't going to admit it. Not at all.
Her head turned back to Viona, a playful smile crossing her face. "Mm. Maybe I'm planning on doing you," Estelle paused, gently tracing small circles on her thigh on the fabric of her jeans, "but I wouldn't just reveal my intentions like that." Her smile grew more cheeky, and it was evident she was fighting back her own giggles. "I suppose we'll just have to find out, yes?" She gave a little shrug, taking another sip of the drink. It would've been gone within the second it was given to it, had she not been a little afraid of what Viona would say. Estelle happened to be a lightweight. Alcohol hit her hard and it hit her fast. Two drinks in and she was a completely different person. Her hand left the drink, moving to her wrist. She delicately traced the outline of the barbed wire, every little loop and jagged curve.
It was just habit, really. She'd trace any tattoo she had available to her. Each and every one told its own story, and she replayed them in her head as she traced those delicate shapes. "About that.." Estelle trailed off, unsure of her answer. She tried to avoid races as of recent, simply for her own sake. Unless she absolutely had to attend, she preferred not to. Estelle fixed her gaze on Viona, those doe eyes of her softening like never before. There were a lot of things she wanted from Viona. A lot of things she could get if she could just beat her by even a fraction of a second. "No promises that I'll be there."
Estelle slowly flicked her gaze down to her thighs, crossing her legs at the ankles before she looked back up. "But, if you want something fun, I suppose that can work." She hummed softly, drumming her nails on the bar in thought. Estelle could be bold with this. She could play it safe. There were a lot of things she could do. After a moment of thought, she chose the route she wanted to go. "A kiss. I've always wondered what that lipstick of yours would look like on me." Her voice grew a little softer, gaze flitting down to Viona's lips. She knew she was unlikely to win this, so why not have some fun? It was just harmless teasing, anyways.
"And what do you want from me? I'm intrigued now." Estelle leaned a little towards Viona, gazing up at her with those blue-brown eyes. She could see the little sparkles in Viona's emerald eyes, making her wonder what Viona wanted from her. Estelle leaned away after a moment, taking a longer sip of her drink this time. She had to admit, it wasn't bad. But not really her style. She preferred sweeter drinks like strawberry daiquiris. "I mean, I don't have too much I can offer you. Unless you just want to take the rest of my privacy away." Estelle let out a soft huff, referring to having to fork her phone number over. She would not appreciate being woken up from a good dream just to answer Viona at 3 am.
One hand had shifted up to her hair, twirling a strand around her finger. Her other hand was tapping on her thigh, scratching lightly against her jeans.
Stella had called her stupid, and Viona didn’t even bat an eye. Clearly, things were not as black and white between them as she had thought, and she wondered how things had managed to shift so quickly. There were no sharp retorts on her tongue or any conniving ideas running through her brain. She was simply… enjoying herself. She was enjoying the drinks and the playfulness that lacked hidden intentions. It was not often that Viona sat down and had a friendly conversation with someone without the intention of dragging them back to bed in her condo.
Her smile only widened at Stella’s sarcastic use of a pet name, pearly white teeth flashing under the neon lights. “Darlin’? Shit, it looks like I’ve rubbed off on you. You should be afraid.” Her laughter was gentle and genuine as a well-manicured hand rested on her chest, “Perhaps I should start calling you mon amour.” The woman cooed, though it was quickly broken up by snorts she failed to stifle as she was accused of drugging her rival's drink. Viona was stupid enough to cross Stella in such a way, as she did not wish to be a body shoved in the back of that bubblegum pink trunk.
There was a long pause as Viona stared at Stella, rightfully shocked, though she hid it well by taking a long swig of her new drink. “Me? Take me to bed? Stella, that may be your finest joke yet.” She spoke once she recovered, the woman running a thumb over her lips to wipe away any droplets. A perfectly arched brow lifted in Stella’s direction as the other woman stared her down, gaze sharp with challenge. Viona did not believe her one bit. She just had to be bluffing. “Bless your heart, but I call bullshit. Complete. And utter. Bullshit.” She clicked her tongue after each phrase to articulate her words to add fuel to the fire she was building.
“I knew you dreamed about me, and that it annoyed the shit out of you, but you’ll never make a move.” She leaned over in a taunting manner and she licked her lips as if she had the most delectable meal laid out before her. “You want me from a distance, Stella. I think you’re afraid that I’ll chew you up and spit you out.” The woman bared her teeth with the statement, “God gave you them fangs for a reason, darlin’. It’s a damn shame that you’re too afraid to use em.” Her snarl turned into a triumphant, prideful grin, and in that moment, she was sure she had won.
“But I suppose you can have a kiss if you win that race. What a smart way to get yourself out of taking me home tonight.” Would she drop it? Absolutely not. Stella had drawn a line in the sand, and Viona was keen to see how far she could cross before her rival decided to retaliate. In her eyes, a challenge had been issued, and she was never one to back down. “It is only fair, after all, since we know how your lipstick looks on me.” She outstretched her hand to examine the faint outlines of Stella’s lips that still stained her fair skin. It felt as if that interaction had been forever ago. “They call mine ‘bitch red’, so I’m sure it would be perfect for you.”
She stirred her drink with an index finger as she took a moment to analyze the rival she had never gotten a chance to really know. Her sharp gaze tried to pick the other woman apart as she sat there wondering who she was beneath all the banter and bluster. Truly, she did seem sweet with her giggles and constant fidgeting with her various tattoos, though Viona would rather die than give the woman a compliment. She could not, under any circumstances, appear soft. She had a very distinct, nagging feeling that Stella would take the knowledge that Viona was human and run with it.
Little did she know, it was already too late. Ignorance truly was bliss. “Take the rest of your privacy? I’m intrigued… or I could just race you for pinks.” Her tone was one of deadly seriousness as if she was actually considering the idea, but the words were quickly followed by a soft chuckle to reassure her rival. Truly, she did not wish to actually take anything from the woman, much less her car. “You know, I do have a charity ball coming up… I could use a date.” Oh, she liked this idea. Yes, this was certainly the way to go, and the woman began to tingle with excitement.
Surely, such an event would be divine torture for Estelle, wouldn’t it? At least, she certainly hoped it would be. “If I win, you come with me. I choose your outfit and makeup. I’ll turn you into the most perfect southern belle this side of Savannah, how does that sound?” Innocently, the woman tilted her head and batted her eyelashes, looking as pure as the day she was born. She did not mention that she fully intended to make Stella drink any of the whiskey samples Viona was offered, but she assumed those were small details that could be saved for later. Stella wouldn’t mind, she was sure of it.
“Just know, that if you don’t attend the race, that definitely counts as you forfeiting the bet. In that case, I sure hope you know how to waltz, Stella.” Her hands smoothed over the fringe of her shorts before she gently played with the pockets, picking off any spare fuzz leftover from the dryer. That was, until another thought burst into her ever-villainous brain. “Unless you’d rather have “The She-Devil Was Here” tattooed somewhere on your body. I’d even let you get some barbed wire thrown in there to match the whole aesthetic you have going on.” She gestured towards Stella’s tattoos, which she had conveniently been tracing.
