Eden looked up at the sound of keys jingling, both anxious but a little excited to meet her roommate. The door swung open to reveal a short, dark-haired girl who was up to her elbows in bags and luggage. The first thing Eden noticed was her long hair, which flowed softly into feminine curlyish waves and covered most of her face. Once she looked up, Eden’s nose immediately and subconsciously crinkled, her eyebrows furrling in confusion and disbelief. It was definitely worse than last year. Her new roommate was Priscilla Yendell, because of course it was. Just her luck.

Years worth of memories of petty arguments, backtalk, tricks, rivalry and just general distaste came rushing back to her. Of course, it wasn’t like Eden didn’t know she and Priscilla went to the same university, it's not like it was that big. She had certainly seen her around campus, but they had been able to avoid each other pretty well their first year. They barely even saw each other at the barn, riding two different disciplines certainly managed to keep their paths from crossing. She didn’t even know which horse was Priscilla’s, and Eden thought she had gotten to know every horse there.

“This is a joke, right?”, the words blurted out of her mouth without a moment of hesitation, and she quickly closed her mouth as soon as they left her mouth. That probably came off way harsher than she would’ve liked. Oh well, it wasn’t like they were going to get along to begin with anyways, right? Eden has known Priscilla since they were kids, at least 10 years, and not once had they even been anything remotely close to nice to each other. It wasn’t like one was just a bully to the other, they were both vicious little devils, and Eden hated the way Priscilla got under her skin and made her act. It always felt out of character for her, like she was doing something wrong. Once Eden decided to drop western riding for good they barely even saw each other.

Eden’s eyes studied the girl in front of her quickly. It had certainly been a while since she had last been this close to her, and Priscilla had definitely changed from when they were kids. Eden’s gaze was subconsciously lured to her figure, before being captivated by her gelid eyes. Eden always had a soft spot for blue eyes, she could spend hours staring into them, admiring the myriad of hues. Her eyelashes were hard to ignore, and even Eden had to admit that the way Priscilla did her eyeliner complemented her eyes greatly, giving them a very sultry and feline look. She ripped her eyes away, realizing she had probably been staring for just a second too long. She glanced at everything Priscilla was carrying and almost offered to give her a hand, but thankfully stopped herself last minute.

Eden sat up and twisted her body, swinging her legs so they dangled over the edge of her bed. A thousand thoughts ran through her head, should she offer to change rooms with someone else? Should she talk to the administration? Just ignore her all year and avoid being in her dorm at all costs? Quit university and move back home and live in her parent’s basement? Okay, that last one is a bit excessive, she thought to herself. She glanced at the lanyard of keys on her desk, and quickly hopped off her bed, slipping on some shoes and snagging the keys and her wallet before she could second-guess herself. “I’m getting coffee”, Eden mentioned at the last second, before closing the door behind her. Let Priscilla figure out whatever she wants to do, Eden decided.

It was a quick walk to Eden’s favorite coffee shop on campus. The shop was small, almost hidden in an inconspicuous building with just a little sign that hangs off the brick wall, reading: “Big Dog Coffee”, in bold black letters against a red background. Eden loved it because the coffee was absolutely the best in town, it was pretty secluded, and they played genuinely good music. A little ring of a bell announced Eden’s arrival to the baristas, who just at the sight of the blonde began ringing up her usual order. She leaned on the counter, making light small talk while she waited. Normally she got along great with the baristas, and found them all easy to talk to, which for her was pretty impressive as is. The unexpected encounter had left Eden a bit caught off guard, and wasn’t in the mood for much conversation. Once her white mocha was ready, she settled into her favorite loveseat, hoping that the music would help clear her mind.

Fuck. Of course she'd get stuck with Eden out of all possible people. She'd much rather have her roommate from last year- Catalina Summers- who had a permanent scowl on her face and snapped at Priscilla any chance she would get. She was a bitch, but at least she wasn't Eden Foster! Just looking at this woman brought her into a sour mood, remembering all the things they'd done to each other. It wasn't so much of a dislike for Eden herself, it was simply their history and the way they treated each other. What was the reason for any of it, anyways? They were just two mean kids who also happened to be competitors. Priscilla was sure she had some sort of look on her face, because she caught the look of distaste mirrored on the face of Eden.

Hearing what the other woman said, her lips parted softly like she was about to say something. Priscilla was going to say some horrible insults, she was going to apologize, she was going to make some dumb comment. But she didn't. She held her tongue and stayed civil. Instead, she offered up a polite, yet awkward smile. The idea of sleeping in her truck bed for the rest of the year actually became a possibility for her now. Priscilla had seen Eden around campus a few times, but never quite caught a good look at her. They'd both grown so much from when they were kids. Her gaze was settled on that pretty cool blond hair, almost silvery. That hair made Priscilla so jealous at one point that she debated dying her black hair blonde just to piss Eden off. Damn Eden Foster and her pretty blonde hair. And her pretty copper brown eyes.. her pretty lips.. wait. What was she thinking?

This was her goddamn childhood rival, not her childhood crush. Priscilla watched as she twisted her body and swung her legs over the bed, and for a moment she thought Eden was about to come over and punch her or something. But then she remembered how half the time, any conflict had been started by Priscilla herself. She knew Eden wasn't exactly one to initiate conflict. Since then, Priscilla had changed greatly to become a much more kinder person, although she still had her ways of subtly getting under people's skin as needed. Maybe she'd try to make amends with Eden, or maybe she'd just make their rivalry even worse.

Keen blue eyes followed Eden's every move, the way she hopped off the bed and grabbed a few things and then slipped on her shoes. She was leaving. Maybe to request a new roommate? Hopefully. Priscilla was quick to move out of the way for her, catching the little thing she said at the last minute. Going to get coffee. Okay, that left her with time to panic, reflect on her past actions, and ultimately decide what she wanted to do. She wasn't so sure if the university would be willing to do roommate switches, and she didn't want to seem like a total bitch. Maybe she could crash with a friend? The beds were small, but she obviously didn't mind close contact. She loved it, actually.

Feeling the weight and strain of her luggage in her hands, she gently dropped it to the floor with a sigh of relief. Priscilla gazed at the one side of the room, which was already decorated neatly. The room had a soft aroma of citrus and something else she couldn't quite place, but it smelled divine. It was probably from Eden, though, so she made a face and pretended like it didn't smell good anymore. Priscilla stood there for awhile, just switching her gaze from one side of the room from the other. It would be extremely awkward to sleep so close to someone she knew didn't like her. Share a bathroom with someone she knew didn't like her, since the university was so gracious to provide a bathroom in the dorm rooms so there wasn't a communal one.

Lord. Her decision would determine just how this year would go, since she often spent a lot of time in her room studying. Chemistry was not an easy major, after all. She always kicked herself for choosing it even if she knew it would pay off. Priscilla took a deep inhale, and made her choice. She picked up the bags she had dropped, lugging them over to the bed. Maybe the universe was punishing her for treating Eden so poorly and forcing her to either make amends or make the whole thing worse.

Priscilla began her unpacking process, deciding to play some quiet music. Her all time favorite artist, of course. Her clothes were settled into the dresser provided, and then she noticed something. While the side of the room Eden chose had a bookshelf, her side had a vanity. Priscilla was quick to finish unpacking, not wanting to go through the struggle of trying to decide if it was worth it to stay or not. Her wall decorations and what it put up. Her sheets were the last thing to go on. They were pretty cute, actually. A clean white silk with a pattern of cats pawing at delicate looking flowers. It had matching pillow cases, and a huge, fuzzy comforter.

Of course, she had her usual four pillows, plus a little round, fuzzy pink one. Her stuffed animals, some cats and a horse. Why wouldn't she? The entire bed set up she thought was absolutely adorable. The cat sheets, the loose fuzzy throw blankets in a white snow leopard print. The stuffed animals. Priscilla hated an empty bed. She couldn't sleep in one, and she wasn't exactly so keen on a relationship. So, she filled the presence of someone next to her by using those stupid little stuffed animals. They were her biggest comfort. She placed her shoes neatly by her bed, and then glanced down at her clothes. Was it worth it to change? It's not like anything happened on the first day, there were no classes or anything. It was too chaotic with everyone moving in to have class or anything of the sort.

Priscilla was free to do whatever she wanted. Hang out with friends. Find some party to go to. Make a routine with her classes. But for some reason, she felt compelled to just lay in bed. So that's exactly what she did. She threw herself down onto the mattress, peeling back the covers she just had neatly tucked, covering herself up. Hiding under the warm, cozy covers didn't get rid of the fact that Eden would be back eventually. She didn't really care all that much, or at least that's what she tried to tell herself. One of her hands pulled out from under the covers, reaching for one of the stuffed animals. A fluffy, elegant looking white cat with pretty blue eyes and a pink bow tie. She got it because it reminded her of her own cat, Duchess. Priscilla rested her head back on the pillows, holding that stuffed cat to her chest like it was an actual cat. Just staring up at the ceiling, her music turned off now.

Just getting a change in scenery was already helping Eden deal with the thought of having to live with Priscilla Yendell. She held the ceramic mug delicately, her fingertips just barely meeting as she sipped the warm drink. The coffee certainly didn’t hurt, Eden was a bit of a coffee addict, though she would never admit it. In fact, there probably weren’t a lot of situations where getting a coffee wouldn’t make her feel at least the littlest bit better. It was certainly an easy way to get into her heart, as cheesy as it was Eden loved the idea of a coffee and movie night date. She was a bit of a hopeless romantic, despite the fact that her own romantic endeavors hadn’t been particularly successful. She hates to acknowledge that she loves classic romance tropes and the idea of surprise dates, small declarations of appreciation, and whatever other bullshit people do when in a relationship. Though she really was fine being single, and definitely enjoyed her time alone, sometimes it’d be nice to have someone who’s always down to hangout and loves you unconditionally, y’know?

She stared down at the beige liquid in her hands, momentarily contemplating past relationships. It’s not like she had too many, she had one “serious” girlfriend in her senior year of highschool, and she had this sort of on-again off-again fling with someone she met in one of her classes, Rebecca Davis. They had met in one of her Intro to Biology classes, and hit it off quickly, hanging out almost every day. Their relationship soon merged the lines of platonic and romantic, and though Eden liked her, Becca wasn’t necessarily what she would want in a serious relationship. She was just a bit... careless with people perhaps? Eden definitely wanted someone honest, but Becca was brusque in a way that set Eden on edge. She never gave reassuring touches or grazes, and not to mention she wasn't a big fan of the horses. She hadn’t seen the other girl all summer, and truthfully wasn’t too sure what to expect when they’d cross paths again. Eden downed the last bit of her coffee, relishing in the sweetness of the white chocolate, before taking the cup and coaster to the front of the shop and leaving it neatly atop the counter with a quick smile as she left.

As she left the quaint shop, Eden’s pace slowed to an idle stroll. She wasn’t even really sure where else to go. She wanted to give Kingsley a chance to settle in without her doting on him, and she certainly couldn’t go back to her dorm. The library crossed her mind, and she even made the short walk over to the historic building and tried to open the doors before realizing that it was closed, likely due to being move-in day and who in their right mind would already be heading to the library? Eden let out an exasperated huff, her teeth instinctively nipping at her bottom lip as she considered her options.

Might as well get some errands done, the blonde thought, though going grocery shopping certainly wasn’t in her plans for the day. She made her way back to the dorm parking lot, quickly finding her dark blue truck. It wasn’t the prettiest nor the newest, but it got her from place a to place b safely, even transporting Kings whenever necessary and she couldn’t ask anything more of it. She had gotten the truck from an older gentleman who had put the ole Ram through literal hell. Internally it managed pretty well, and though Eden always cussed it out when it needed a new piece, the maintenance upkeep was honestly lower than she even hoped for. Now, cosmetically? The thing showed every inch of the wear and tear it accumulated throughout its lifetime. Dents, scratches, squeaky and jammy doors, you name it. Eden loved every single one, whether they were caused by her or not. She thought the “damage” gave it character, and the truck quickly earned Eden’s endearment. Hearing the familiar chirp of the doors unlocking she stepped up into the tall vehicle. The truck wasn’t lifted- or even particularly tall for a truck- but at her size Eden was used to things being a bit oversized for her. She wasn’t even in the market for a horse as tall as Kings, ideally wanting something in the 15.3 to 16.1 range, but as soon as she sat on him for the first time she knew he was the one. They seemed completely in-tuned to one another. Eden reminisced a bit on the memory as she pulled up to the closest grocery store, a small family-owned shop that sold really good produce, though a little limited in terms of variety. She made her way around the store quickly, having memorized the layout over the course of a year of late-night study snacks and emergency horse treats. She grabbed a few essentials, a carton of oat milk, some apples (both for her and Waves), a box of cereal bars, a six pack of her favorite beer and a small variety veggie tray. She glanced down at the candy aisle next to the registers, her eyes flicking between two different sweets before grabbing one of each.

Receipt in hand, she made her way back over to her truck, plopping the plastic bag full of groceries into the suede, slightly discolored passenger seat next to her. She started the engine, before putting the vehicle into reverse and heading back onto the road. Eden checked the time, she had at least killed a few hours. She might as well go back and see if Priscilla was even still there. The drive took only a few short minutes, and before she had a chance to think twice Eden entered the dorm building and was at her door, turning the key and entering.

The first thing that she noticed was the aroma, lightly sweet with hints of vanilla. She looked over at her roommate’s side of the room, a bit surprised to see all her belongings put away and the room decorated. The cute bed sheets piled with pillows and stuffed animals even earned a genuine smile out of Eden, being a big cat-person herself. She finally locked her eyes with Priscilla’s, her bottom lip again gnawed on as she racked her mind thinking of what to say.

“I- uh, got some groceries.” Eden stated plainly, taking the opportunity to turn and set the plastic bag on her desk and unload the items. She crouched down to put everything into the small minifridge the university supplied them with, making sure to put the six-pack and heavier items on the bottom. As she stood up and turned to face Priscilla again, Eden glanced down at the two candies she had bought, before taking a small step forward and reaching her open palm out towards the dark-haired woman, “Do you like either of these?” she offered, the words slow and cautious.

(sorry for the delay! the last part is a bit rushed pls forgive me <3)

Priscilla stayed like this for a long while. Flat on her back, arms over her chest as she cradled that cat stuffed animal to her chest. Gazing up at the ceiling, brows furrowing in thought every so often. She was exhausted, barely able to keep her eyes open. But she didn't want to sleep, not yet. She needed to at least try to talk to Eden. But the worst part about that was she was unsure of what would come out of her mouth. Sorrowful apologies- or distasteful words? Sometimes, Priscilla talked without even thinking about what she was saying. What if this was one of those occasions? She didn't want to make things anymore awkward then they already were. This year didn't have to be hard and awkward.

Priscilla wondered if she should just mope in bed, or get up and do something. But nothing particularly seemed appealing except for going to mess with Clementine. She wasn't going to do that, though, the mare needed time to adjust to being back at the university. There was no point in stressing her out. With a heavy, dramatic sigh, she turned over so she was now on her side, back facing the door. The cat was stilled cradled to her chest, her gaze rested on some of the things she had put up on the wall. Posters, meaningful little decorations, all things in that category. Mostly music posters of her favorite artists and bands. Back at home, her walls were covered in things. Random trinkets, posters, vinyls, various things she's collected over the years. It almost made her sad that she couldn't fully customize this little space of hers like she did in her bedroom.

No matter what she thought about, her mind kept drifting back to Eden. Mixed feelings, and some she couldn't even begin to comprehend at the moment. Maybe she should do what she did best- shop for horses online. Even if she didn't need a new horse.. and definitely couldn't afford one, it was still fun to look and to dream. Right? And it was then once she started to feel around the bed, that she realized she didn't know where her phone was. Not in her pocket. Not next to her. She lifted her body up, and reached a hand under herself. Of course, she had been laying on it. Priscilla moved to lay flat on her back again, moving the cat to rest down on her stomach.

She just couldn't put it down. It provided too much comfort. It didn't take long for her to open up the familiar website, since she had it bookmarked. A few clicks, and she was immediately set with the sight of a gorgeous palomino Quarter horse. Her two favorite things... she was almost drooling over this horse. And what she loved most, was the big, chunky rears that Quarter horses had. With Clementine, she loved to just stand behind her and grab at her hindquarters. Normally, someone wouldn't do that to their horse. But the trust these two had was incredible.

The story how she got Clementine was kind of funny, actually. She wasn't even looking for a horse remotely close to her. Priscilla had wanted a bay Thoroughbred, enjoying the long legs and thinner build of them. Nothing flashy, nothing fancy. And definitely not something expensive. But when she went to a farm to look at one, she caught one glimpse of Clementine as a foal. That stupid little Grullo foal, a hot horse with a spirited personality. You couldn't even get near her without Clementine kicking out. Out of two of the most notorious Quarter horses, show champions.

Between her unique color, confirmation, and her parents, Clementine costed a fortune. Literally. Priscilla is still making payments today- essentially taking out a loan with the farm to get the damn horse. The hell Priscilla went through to train and break her was a pain like no other. Miraculously, Priscilla wasn't left permanently scarred by the whole thing. No sorts of scars on her body, other than the occasional childhood scar or something else. Never one left by Clementine, even though she had always struck out and somehow always managed to catch Priscilla somewhere.

Mindlessly scrolling through her phone, letting out criticizing whispers every time she saw a horse that was waaaaay overpriced. I mean, who's going to pay $5,000 for an unbroke, basically feral 16 year old horse just because it's a pretty buckskin paint? Some people were ridiculous. This went on for a little while until she was immediately started by the sound of a key turning in the lock. Priscilla then glanced down to the time on her phone, her eyes widening. Damn. She had really spent that long moping and judging people for overpricing horses?

It definitely worked in aiding for a distraction, because her thoughts of Eden had disappeared. But now they all came rushing back so fast that it hurt her head. Priscilla turned her head over her shoulder, her back faced to the door and the room itself, given that she had been switching between positions while browsing on her phone. She curiously and quietly watched Eden as they locked eyes. Blue eyes met brown, and for a single heartbeat, Priscilla felt a flash of something deep down. Something she had been avoiding feeling for awhile. And just as quick as it came, it disappeared. She took note of the smile on Eden's face, wondering what it was about. Had she ever even seen this woman smile before? And as much as she didn't want to admit it... Eden had a nice smile.

Between the creeping dread and the looming anxiety prying her apart, small amounts of other emotions seeped in through the cracks. At the sound of Eden's soft voice, she slowly begin to sit up. One of her blankets was draped around her shoulders, the other in her lap. That stupid little cat was hugged to her chest as she sit there, looking like she had just finished a crying session. If her makeup wasn't still intact, it definitely would appear as though she had just bawled her eyes out. Keeping the cat hugged close to her, she let her hand run over the fluffiness of its fur. How did they manage to create such realistic fur on a stuffed animal? It's something she would never know.

Priscilla watched as Eden unloaded the groceries, taking note of the things she bought. And then, much to her surprise, Eden stood back up and took a small step towards her. Her anxiety flared again, thinking something was about to happen. And as Eden extended her open palm out, Priscilla gazed down at the two candies. A genuine, soft smile graced her features. One that revealed the odd teeth she had, that double set of canines that were weirdly sharp. Yet another thing she was self-conscious about.

Little did Eden know, she had picked out one of Priscilla's favorite candies. One of those little hard candies, the strawberry ones that you'd find in the candy dish a grandmother kept. Priscilla hesitantly reached a hand out, leaning forwards on the bed as she did so to meet Eden halfway. As she reached to take the candy, the tips of her sharp nails gently pressed into Eden's palm. Her nails, a pretty dark red, formed a perfect point at the ends. Her claws, she called them. And as Priscilla drew her hand back, their fingers brushed softly together, sending a small jolt throughout her.

Priscilla met her gaze again with something other than hatred for the first time ever. "Thank you. These little things are my favorite." She offered another smile, leaning back on the bed again.

(you're all good! don't worry about it <3)

Though she tried to not let it show, Eden stood on edge like a doe startled by a noise, poised and ready to leap away at any moment. Her hand wavered in the air, crossing the border between her and what daunted her. A bit to her surprise, her offering was accepted with a toothy grin, her eyes immediately caught on Priscilla’s double canines, having forgotten all about them. She found the atypical characteristic intriguing, as she always had, having never seen anyone else with such prominent canines, but as soon as she spotted them, it went away. Eden’s eyes watched as Priscilla reached over towards her palm, giving an instinctive flinch when she felt her honed and exacting nails lightly graze her hand, the hairs on her arm raising slightly though she didn’t mean for them to, and hoping that the reaction would go unnoticed. The delicate, almost non-existent contact sent a warm jolt up her arm, her gaze caught on the dark hue of the other girl’s nails, before noticing she still had her hand out and opened out towards her. She quickly closed her palm around the remaining sweet, drawing it close to her body and fiddling with it in her hands awkwardly. She loudly removed the wrapper, toying with the foil, “Anytime.” Eden replied, her voice a bit distorted around the hard candy.

She leaned against her bed frame, still facing the short woman, allowing herself a few moments to analyze the figure in front of her. Eden stared at the stuffed animal in her arms, and a thought momentarily crossed her mind. Has she been crying?, a pang of concern ran through her, but the lack of red eyes and runny mascara quickly led her to cross off that possibility, though it did catch her off guard to see that Priscilla surrounded herself with so many comforting items. It certainly wasn’t something Eden would have expected of her. Out of the two of them, the shorter woman always seemed to be the tougher or more hardy one. Whilst Eden would let her emotions get the better of her, either lashing out or becoming miserable, Priscilla seemed to deal with everything in stride, and it took something big to get her to react, though by the end of their years of antics Eden seemed to have cracked the code, noticing what bothered her the most and using it to her advantage.

Eden’s eyes were most drawn to her face, demanding to see more, though she only let herself look for a second or two before forcing her eyes to move away. She made note of the light freckles that dotted Priscilla’s cheeks and bridge of her nose, something she had had since they were kids and that Eden always thought complemented Priscilla well, which of course often infuriated the blonde. She couldn’t understand how the other woman always managed to make everything look so effortless. The way she walked, the way she talked, all of it oozed confidence and a certain boldness that Eden wished she had. Especially when riding, something that maybe took Eden five tries to get right Priscilla always seemed to master in two or three. She distinctly remembers always being jealous of the way Priscilla was able to create outfits and look incredible, even if she was just in ‘regular’ clothes. Eden sometimes felt like a child trying on their mother’s clothes, and rarely experimented outside of her comfort zone. She dropped her gaze to the floor, scuffling her feet against the laminate tiles, unsure of what to say next. Should she say anything else? Wait for Priscilla to say something? Just go to the bathroom and get ready for bed?

Eden decided to shuffle up onto her bed, creating a bit more of a distance between the two. A silence drew between the two, the air so thick you could cut it with a knife, Eden thought. She rested against the wall, leaning back and turning slightly to the side so that she was only half-facing her roommate, dropping down her elbow so that she was more reclined in what she hoped was a more natural or indifferent pose. Her fingers ran through the soft fibers of her dark-gray throw blanket, needing to do something to keep her thoughts from going a thousand miles an hour and stopping herself from saying something mindless or asinine.

Priscilla hated the awkwardness between them. Damn, she couldn't even relax in bed without feeling like she was about to burst from the tension in the room now? This isn't how she wanted to start the year off. She realized a few things- Eden would be seeing her in her most vulnerable states. No makeup, casual clothes, asleep, crying, and so much more. The thought made a lump form in her throat and a heavy weight of dread to settle in the pit of her stomach, weighing her down even more. Her shoulders sink down a little, no longer held straight and upwards. Priscilla had a habit of crying often, especially while studying. Stress got to her so easily, even if she put on a calm front to everyone else.

But to roomates? They got to see it all. Especially Catalina Summers, who once had to cradle Priscilla in her arms just to calm her down after she got insanely drunk at a party. She had been crying and sobbing about some ex girlfriend, about how she was so embarrassed that her ex had saw her naked. Which wasn't even true, the relationship was too short lived for anything like that. Drunk Priscilla had two sides- chaotic and horribly flirtatious, or just inconsolable crying. And for Catalina Summers, the well known rich bitch of the university to even touch someone like Priscilla? Wild. Catalina was disgusted just looking at someone who had a horse that costed below six figures.

Her gaze flitted over to Eden, who was leaning against the headboard and eyeing her in a way that Priscilla couldn't tell if it was judgmental or not. Glancing down to herself, she realized she probably wasn't living up to her usual standards. She was sitting in bed, with her silly little sheets with that little cat in her lap. The last thing she wanted was for Eden to see how soft she really was. She wanted to uphold that tough girl reputation she'd made for herself. But now that they were just sort of looking at each other, like some sort of stand off, she took this time to really study Eden.

For a moment, the sun streaming in through the window cascaded over Eden, making her look absolutely ethereal. The way her blonde hair lit up and the way the light caught in her eyes... she looked like an angel in this light. Oh, lord. Priscilla could feel her former jealously bubbling up inside of her and making itself well known. Finally, she tore her gaze away from Eden and looked down at her lap, brows furrowed slightly. She could hear the rustling of sheets as Eden climbed onto her own bed. The silence between them.. it was literally killing her.

If there was one thing Priscilla absolutely couldn't stand, it was awkward silence. She had to say something. Anything. So, she slowly trailed her gaze over to Eden, speaking in a soft voice. Her accent, that little southern drawl, was much more prominent as it betrayed her nervousness. "I just.. uh, wanted to-" Her soft little nervous voice was immediately cut off by the ringing of her phone, causing her to jump a little. As soon as she saw who was calling, her face immediately lit up. Her best friend in the entire world, who also happened to go the university. Maybe this was her out from the awkwardness.

Priscilla gave Eden a soft, apologetic look as she swiped to answer the call, putting the phone up to her ear. "Kadie! Hi, what're-" She was cut off by the excited voice on the other end, rambling on immediately. A warm smile lit up her face, and she gently toyed with the bow of the cat in her lap. "Okay. Slow down, my love. I don't know what you're saying." The affectionate nickname was one of many, although there were no intentions behind it. There never were. After a moment, her brows furrow slightly in thought. "..no. Remember last time? Clementine broke my ribs. You know how high-strung my horse is, that's just..." She was cut off again, but it didn't bother her.

Kadie had been talking about something they did last year that was incredibly fun, but ultimately resulted in Clementine throwing Priscilla, then slipping in the mud and crushing her. Priscilla was incredibly lucky to get away with only broken ribs, with a horse that big falling on her. Due to the event and the embarrassing nature of how it occurred, she never mentioned to anyone. How did she break her ribs? She told anyone who asked that she just had a bad fall during a ride. It wasn't a lie. A few more words spoken, a very sappy sweet goodbye with quite a few 'I love you's' and then the call ended.

It was, in fact, not an out of this awkward situation. Kadie was already off finding love for herself and Priscilla did not feel like joining her at the bar. Not on the first night, she didn't need a hangover on the first day of class. Her gaze slowly shifted back up to Eden, wondering what she was about to tell her before Kadie called. Oh, right. Should she still go through with it? Probably. "I just... wanted to.." She trailed off, taking one hand and gently brushing her hair over to her shoulder. Priscilla gently took the ends of her hair, twirling the small curls around her finger as she considered her options again. She had already started speaking again, no point in stopping.

"...apologize. For everything. I really don't want things to be awkward because I was a really, really mean kid." Her voice was meek and soft, like she was embarrassed. Priscilla cringed at herself, unable to believe she just admitted defeat and apologized to Eden. Even if the poor girl deserved so much more than a meek apology. Her finger twirled all the way up her hair, having the dark strands wrapped so tight around her finger that she could feel the pressure and see the way her pale skin was turning a slight purple at the tip of her finger.

Priscilla gently released her hair, watching as it bounced back into the little curled ends. Great. She'd just went and made everything even more awkward, of course. Leave it to her to be a mess and ruin things that were already ruined.

Eden’s head twisted as she heard Priscilla’s voice, much softer and warmer than she expected, her full attention immediately zoned in on her once rival. Current rival? Were they even competing anymore? And if they were, what about? She leaned in slightly, shifting her weight as if innately drawn to the other woman across from her, before a sudden ringing made them both jump. The way Priscilla’s face instantly changed didn’t go unnoticed, and Eden couldn’t help but wonder who could be on the other side of the phone. She returned the half-smile, darting her eyes away so as to not seem as if she was eavesdropping, though it was sort of impossible not to. She kept her head looking towards the posters and wall decorations that adorned the opposite wall, appreciating that at the very least, Priscilla had good style and her side of the room was very well put together.

Though they couldn’t do anything drastic like paint the walls, both girls had managed to impose their own personality into each side of the room. Most of Eden’s belongings that she brought with her were books and things for her studies, the wooden desk and bookshelf already organized exactly how she liked. Clear jars and bottles held her fountain pens, paper clips, scissors, basically any and every stationary item one could imagine. She had a few small pictures frames tucked around, almost hidden in plain sight, most of them being of her and Kings. Despite being against campus rules, Eden loved candles and almost always had at least one lit whilst studying or reading. She kept a few anatomical diagrams of animals tacked onto the walls, which not only helped her to memorize but she felt it helped give off light academia vibes, which of course was everything she strived to be. Even her bedsheets were a light, mossy green with gray accents and throw pillows. On her nightstand lived the only plant she ever managed to keep alive, a pathos that looked a little pathetic but that Eden adored, kept in a warm yellow terracotta pot.

Eden’s eyes flickered as she caught just a few words from the conversation, eyes dropping to Priscilla’s hands and the way she gently played with the stuffed cat’s bow. Mesmerized by her long, delicate fingers and the way they gracefully moved, every motion seemingly calculated and deliberate yet candid. She couldn’t wrap her head around it, how contradictory it was. Eden fleetingly wondered how soft they seemed, what it would be like to hold them, what it would be like to be held by them. Her brows furrowed as she finally noticed the ring on her left hand, on her third finger specifically. Eden didn’t take Priscilla to be the married or engaged type, and it certainly didn't look like a typical ring for that sort of thing.

Though only grasping a medley of words, Eden’s head involuntarily cocked a bit to the side, trying to make meaning of the words and put them into a context that made any sort of sense. My love? Maybe Priscilla was the relationship-type after all, Eden thought, suppressing a cringe as she imagined having to deal with being a third-wheel again for a whole year, only worse because it’s Priscilla, and just Priscilla was enough to make her tense. It always frustrated Eden how easily Priscilla managed to set her off, she prided herself in being relatively level-headed, at least with people, since she hated confrontation and preferred to just handle things as diplomatically as possible. With Priscilla, she was a distraction, always ripping her attention, captivating it, making her lose her focus and not think properly. The next thing she heard however made her turn to face the dark-haired woman head-on, a confused expression on her face demanded some sort of explanation, You broke your ribs? Of course Eden wasn’t naive to the dangers of the sport, having had her own fair share of accidents, she was just caught off guard to hear of such a grave injury and not been aware of it. She figured she would’ve at least heard some news about it at the barn if it happened recently. The last few ‘I love you’s’ seemed to solidify Eden’s previous suspicion, though she wasn’t entirely convinced either. She couldn’t quite make any definitive conclusions about her new roommate yet, nothing really seemed to add up.

Eden’s eyebrows raised just the slightest bit as Priscilla hesitantly extended an olive branch, trying to hide her own confusion. Her features instantly softened at the sound of her voice, the velvety drawl conveying genuine regret. Eden opened her mouth to respond, before wavering, closing it again tentatively. She paused for a moment before deciding what to say, the two seconds of silence nearly unbearable. “I really appreciate it.” She managed to voice out, her voice low and level. “I’m sorry too. I don’t want this year to be awkward.” Eden added, momentarily daring to look into Priscilla’s luring blue eyes. They were quickly distracted by the twirling of her dark, beguiling hair, her gaze temporarily seized and entranced by the movements. Damn her and her pretty fucking hands, Eden thought to herself, a flash of frustration running through her.

Priscilla had caught a glimpse of the looks on Eden's pretty face as she talked on the phone. Normally she wouldn't have just outright talked on the phone like that to someone she wasn't comfortable with, but it would make things a whole lot more awkward if she had got up and left to just answer the phone. She didn't like when people did that to her, it made her feel like they were talking about her even if she knew better. Her gaze shifted back up to Eden, lips parting softly in amazement as she continues to watch how the sunlight spills over her, feeling that jealousy beginning to boil over. Should she compliment her? Tell her how pretty she looks, how her eyes look like pools of honey in the sun? No.

That's weird, and Priscilla knew that personally, she would be freaked out if someone she didn't like said that to her. Her hands continued to fidget with everything possible, soothing her nerves that were beginning to break free. Normally, she kept herself under control fairly well. Maybe it was just her exhaustion from the long drive, her lack of comfort. The last thing she wanted was to break down in front of Eden. She shifted her position so that her legs were crisscrossed and her feet were tucked neatly under her thighs. Her hands immediately go to her ankle, playing with the hem of her pants and her socks.

Her socks, as usual, had some sort of silly pattern on them. This time they were rubber ducks. No matter what sort of outfit she wore, Priscilla always had some stupid and silly socks on. As Eden responds, her nervousness visibly calms down. Her hands stop roaming and searching for something to do, her shoulders relax and become less tense. Even her voice softens, that accent still there but not as prominent. "Thank God." She sounded genuinely relieved, like some huge burden was just lifted from her. Because it was, really. She didn't know if Eden really did accept the apology or not, but she knew things would still be awkward.

Apologizing or forgiving doesn't mean things are great and amazing. After a moment, a thought came to her head. "I promise I'm not one of those shitty roomates. I don't bring anyone back here- not that I have anyone to bring here, anyways." Priscilla let out a soft chuckle, using small hand gestures as she talked. She was being truthful. With friends, she preferred to hang out in their dorm rather than hers. And lovers? Well, we all know the situation with that. Maybe this year her goal would be to loosen up and fight her fear of love and relationships. Still holding that nervous edge, although lesser, she found her hands toying with whatever she could. This time, it happened to be the ring on her finger.

Twisting it side to side, rotating it so that the stone was face down and then up again. Priscilla kept it up until one of the sharp ends of her nails dug into her skin, causing her to fight back a small gasp. She took a small glance down, seeing a small spot of blood from the point of impact. Those nails were deadly. But, they made for good horse scratchers. Priscilla still didn't like the moments of silence between them, and she felt as though she needed to talk to fill the air. "So.. uh.. which horse is yours? I don't think I've ever seen it." God, why couldn't she just shut up?

Priscilla was not too fond of herself in this moment, hating the way she's acting. What happened to her composure? It had ebbed away until it was nothing but a single string barely holding on. Another glance to the window, squinting slightly as the sunlight shines into her eyes. Given the fact she had blue eyes, they were a lot more sensitive to the sunlight. The sun was beginning to set, she knew that by the amount of light. It would still be a little while until it did set, though. But that was the perfect opportunity to go shower and curl up in bed and study or something.

While most students would be out at the bars or hanging out, she just didn't have too much interest in it. Which was odd, because normally she wouldn't turn down any excuse to go get blasted. Maybe she was finally maturing? Hell, maybe she'd even try to invite Eden to do something with her. Nothing outside of the dorm, maybe some little game or something. Priscilla was trying her very best to ease the tension, that fear of being disliked getting to her. Even if she put on her 'I don't care' attitude, it was wearing thin. She didn't know why she wanted Eden to like her so much, but the feeling was very much there.

Last year, she would've just enforced and encouraged that dislike, had they been in this situation then. Maybe that ex of hers, who had been with her for the end of the school year and halfway through summer break really just changed her completely. It was more of an experiment for the two girls than anything real, but it seemed that hurt her even more. The purpose was to explore their sexuality, but it only ended in so many fights, so many late nights spent sobbing and screaming. The whole thing steered Priscilla far away from women, at least in a romantic manner. It only made her even more confused.

Her gaze focused on Eden again, watching her quietly. She liked the way they seemed to contrast, both of them being different in their own unique ways. Priscilla with her colorful patterned sheets and her stuffed animals, Eden with her mossy green sheets and gray accents. Priscilla with her artist posters and her makeup vanity, Eden with anatomical diagrams and her bookshelf. In the strangest way, they seemed to compliment one another. And it made her wonder how different things would've been if they were friends rather than rivals. Would they have been jumping for joy to see that they were roommates? Maybe Priscilla would've even hugged her.

No, that was a lie. Priscilla would've tackled her and hugged her with as much force that she could muster. It was almost a bittersweet thought of what could've been. And even though she was having all these new feelings, the resentment and horrible bitterness still lingered heavy. None of these thoughts changed her view on Eden at the moment.

(i'm very very tired so i hope the portrayal of mixed feelings and thoughts isn't too confusing to read :') )

Eden ran a hand through her short hair, a nervous sort of movement that attempted to at least give her hands something to do. She wasn’t good at this, if anything, she was probably the worst at this. She had always struggled with the whole second-chances thing, she wasn’t particularly quick to forgive and almost never forgot. Her head dropped down to her hands, fingertips running along the edge of one of her rings. A ray of sunlight cascading through the window reflected against the silver metal as she shifted and rotated it mindlessly. She had one adorning almost every finger, varying in sizes and complexities. It wasn’t like she wanted to hold a grudge, it was involuntary. A sort of precaution that made her keep Priscilla in the corner of her eye, despite the courteous exchange they’ve had so far. One that made her note every detail about her. One that made her enraptured with her southern drawl, lose herself in Priscilla’s cerulean eyes, become hypnotized by her movements.

At the very least, she could dissimulate her wariness. There was no reason to make Priscilla feel worse or uncomfortable. She could be friendly, charming even, but that didn’t mean that they had to become friends. Neutral acquaintances was more than enough. She didn’t have to open herself up to her, expose all her fears, share her interests. Eden could handle being indifferent, even if it took some getting used to, not letting herself get flustered just in the mere presence of her. She blinked twice, coming back from her stream of consciousness, realizing her eyes had once again been caught on Priscilla’s hands, observing the ever-constant motions with intrigue. She forced her eyes away, but not before making note of the playful pattern dotted on her socks.

Eden brought a hand to her face, covering one side partially as she let out a huff of relief, mingled with a sort of half-chuckle at the end. “I’ve dealt with that enough for a lifetime. My roommate last year was…not very neighborly.” She explained with a roll of her eyes, her nose scrunching along with the movement. “She would have people over all the time, her side of the room was always a mess, it was just a lot.” Eden added, making temporary eye contact before flicking her gaze away. Eye contact made her feel vulnerable, she felt like she couldn’t think properly or articulate herself as precisely as she would like to. It was almost like kryptonite to her. “You don’t have to worry about it with me either.” She added quickly, the afterthought coming out of her mouth before she realized it. “The worst you’ll get out of me is staying up till ungodly hours, I have trouble sleeping sometimes.” Eden cringed internally, each word coming out worse than the last but already rambling herself into an inescapable hole. Great, a loveless nerd with insomnia. I’m sure she’s thrilled. Eden crossed her arms around herself, instinctively shielding herself from the jeering teasing she was sure to come, though nothing did.

All the contrary, Eden’s brows furrowed as she thought she saw the other woman flinch, her lengthy hair shielding her face as she held her own hands in her lap. A question of concern lodged itself in her throat, the blond leaning her head forward just an inch, though the question never made its way out, Priscilla’s voice ringing through the air first. Eden wavered for a fraction of a second, unsure of whether to proceed with her initial question or just take Priscilla’s lead and brush it off. Eden’s eyes portrayed her hesitation plainly, her indecisiveness pulling her in both directions. With a swift movement she pulled open the drawer of her bedside table, taking out a band-aid from one of the neatly organized acrylic dividers. Eden turned to face the shorter woman again, offering it out silently, just barely giving out a soft smile before turning her head away, not wanting to make Priscilla feel pressured into accepting the help.

Any excuse to talk about her horse however was wholefully welcomed, her eyes crinkling with a genuine smile. “Uh- Kings. Kingsley. Well, Wayward King is his show name, and he has a few nicknames. He’s the dark bay that’s normally in the geldings pasture. He’s got this weird blaze marking.” She let down her arms, using her hands to gesture or sort of indicate the shape of his marking. “He’s an Irish sport horse.” She stopped for a moment, sitting up a bit straighter, “What about yours?” Eden asked softly, the last notes voiced with a subtle rasp.

Her voice had always been something Eden was a bit self-conscious of. She felt as if it didn’t match the rest of her, it didn’t fit with her ash blonde hair, her warm eyes. She feared some people would assume it comes from smoking, which Eden never quite understood the appeal for. The smoke left an awful taste in her mouth and the scent saturated itself onto everything. She only had tried it a few times before deciding definitely that it wasn't for her. And she certainly wasn’t a puritan, Eden had spent way more nights hugging a toilet bowl than she would like to admit. She tried to not get carried away, but sometimes it was nice to just let the alcohol do the talking. It gave her unwarranted confidence to face people head-on, maybe flirt a bit, and just not be so indecisive for once.

As cynical as it was, Eden had a bit of a thing for flirting with straight girls when she was drunk. It made it less serious in a way, and straight girls always found it adventurous to ‘experiment’. It was a defensive measure she supposed, though it certainly wasn’t a box she was going to open and confront anytime soon. It’s not like she hid the fact that she was gay, she had come out of the closet when she turned 16, but obviously new people would have no way of knowing her orientation. She never really felt the need to defend or explain something so intimate about herself to strangers, and oftentimes just didn’t say anything unless it came up naturally in conversation. Occasionally she liked to drop the newsbomb with a joke about herself, though that was few and far between.

“Going to any parties tonight?” Eden offered out, tilting her head slightly to one side, her hair flopping over and flowing in their typical soft waves. Thankfully her hair had decided to be rather cooperative today, and in spite of all the chaos of moving and whatnot, was still relatively intact, a few strands framing her cheekbones. Moving day always generated an obscene amount of frat house and dorm parties. It was the best way to start off the school year; first-years would take advantage of the fact that they knew almost nobody to go absolutely crazy, and older-years used it as a way to reunite with their friends after not seeing them over the summer by getting incredibly drunk. Whilst Eden certainly enjoyed a good party, she wasn’t sure she could deal with that amount of drunk people, all of the rowdiness, and the noise. Just the process of moving in had pretty much drained her, the last thing she needed was to get hit on by a thousand freshmen boys who were drunker than they had been in their whole lives.

(don't worry about it!! it made total sense :) btw while writing this Suburban House came up randomly on my spotify and i almost never listen to Lana so i’m taking this as a sign hehe)

While sitting in the awkward silence occasionally broken by their small talk, Priscilla began to realize some things. She didn't hate Eden. She never did. Maybe she just felt bitter resentment for Eden whenever she quit western riding- giving Priscilla nobody good enough to compete with. It was the sheer fact that she enjoyed their competition and their little petty acts, and once she thought she had saw the last of Eden, a little bit of bitterness formed. It wasn't hate. Not in the slightest. Her thumb rubbed over the small spot on her finger, which was dotted with blood and smeared over her skin now. Having sharp nails was something she shouldn't do, especially with riding horses, but she couldn't stand having plain nails.

Sure, she could always paint her natural nails. But it was the endless amount of shapes, sizes, and designs Priscilla could get with acrylics that really sold it for her. Even if she mostly opted for that same dark red, in either coffin shape or the ones she had now. One of her very favorite things to do was gently glide the sharp tip across someone's skin, just barely brushing it and watching their hair stand up and goosebumps form. She liked to do this when giving back massages- which was something she did frequently for her friend Kadie. It was strangely intimate. Priscilla rested her gaze on Eden again, then slowly looked away.

She didn't want to look like a creep just... staring at her like that. Seeing the movement of her hand as Eden spoke, Priscilla looked back up at her to see the hand covering half of her face. That little noise of relief and the sweet little chuckle made her eyes widen in slight surprise. Why did she find it cute? Priscilla really needed to her a grip on herself. She didn't even like women. There was no reason for her to be finding Eden's actions cute. "I had Catalina Summers as my roommate. I couldn't even breathe without her telling me I was being annoying." She let out a low chuckle of her own, that drawl dragging out the sound.

And as the two made eye contact for a second, Priscilla held it and watched as Eden looked away. They weren't far away in the slightest. The rooms, although nice, were on the smaller side. She could probably reach out and touch Eden if she really wanted to. And the two of them were on their beds, not necessarily right next to each other. Priscilla could see every little detail of this girl. And that's exactly when she finally seemed to notice some small details, now a little too up close and personal for her liking. She subconsciously leaned forwards, resting her elbows onto her thighs. Eden had a thin scar on the bridge of her nose. Small flecks of yellow around her iris, very subtle unless one was giving a thorough look over like Priscilla was.

And as Eden moved her hand, it was then she noticed the scar on her palm. Her right palm, specifically. Priscilla was curious, wanting to ask where it came from. But it would definitely be weird if she did. Her focus was snapped whenever she heard Eden's voice again, her gaze lifting from her hand to her face again. "Hmm. Maybe I could let you in on my little sleeping trick." She offered a playful little smile, shifting so that she was leaning back and not forwards. And then she had grown tired of her position. She untucked her feet from under her thighs, uncrossed them and let them dangle over the edge of the bed.

Though her legs were long, with as short as she was, her feet didn't touch the floor. They stopped a good few inches before. Priscilla saw the clear display of hesitation in her eyes and the little way she moved her head forwards, just barely. Watching as she seemed to make up her mind and reach into the drawer of her bedside stand. She caught a glimpse of the neat dividers before the drawer was shut again. Her surprise was evident as it flashed across her features, gazing down as Eden offered that bandaid to her. How did she even manage to pick up on the fact that Priscilla had pricked herself? She hadn't made it all that obvious, except for the wince on her face as it happened.

As Eden offered it, Priscilla hesitantly leaned forwards, using one hand to rest on the bed to support herself. The last thing she wanted was to fall off of the bed. Although she tried her very best to avoid this, whenever she reached out to take the bandaid, their fingers brushed like they had done earlier. A little more than brushed, actually. It wasn't subtle and she couldn't help the way she felt the heat rise to her cheeks. "Thank you." She offered a gentle smile to attempt to mask the little blush that had risen to her cheeks. This wasn't like her in the slightest. Normally, she probably would've grabbed Eden's hand or one of her fingers on purpose. Now this just embarrassed her.

Priscilla was quick to unwrap the bandaid, pulling the paper off of it. She carefully moved her ring up a little, wrapping the bandaid around the spot she had pricked, which was still bleeding a little. Then she moved her ring back down over the bandaid. Her gaze settled on Eden again, watching the way her eyes crinkled and she gave a genuine smile before talking about her horse. The horse she described seemed familiar.. was it the one next to Clementine? She didn't remember the name on the nameplate. "I think I've seen him?" Priscilla watched as Eden used her hands to describe the marking on his face. It brought a small, amused smile to her face. "I've got a Quarter horse, Clementine. She's hard to miss, the only Grullo here. She's got this.. really big butt. I mean, like, huge." Her tone of voice was playful and a little soft, a little giggle escaping her.

Just as Eden had done to describe the facial marking, Priscilla used her hands to describe her own horse. Her arms extending open, giving a very dramatic and over exaggerated description of the size of her mare. It wasn't all that far off, though. Although there were numerous other Quarter horses around, none of them had the size nor bulk of Clementine. This mare had muscle for days. And she was cow-bred, so the cows she ran definitely quaked at the sight of this huge thing running at them, looking like she's going to punt them into the next dimension.

Priscilla thought for a moment as Eden brought up parties. Maybe she should just... go, and let loose a little. Even if she definitely didn't want to. "I don't think so," she shrugged, glancing to the side, "not really feeling it tonight. Plus, I've got math first thing tomorrow. Not sure I want to make a bad first impression." Her words were not a lie, but not the whole truth. She also didn't want to come back to the dorm drunk and mess up what little progress the two had made by doing something stupid. She knew she'd be sobbing and crying, rambling on about whatever. She knew she would definitely try to flirt with Eden in whatever way she could, too.

And given that she was a Chemistry major, her math class was considerably more difficult than the standard. And the teacher was an absolute asshole, as she had heard by everyone else. It would not go over well if she showed up to that class with a nasty hangover, knowing she'd be irritable and snappy.

(omg?? it definitely has to be a sign bc i'm the hugest lana fan you'll ever meet. and so is priscilla of course because why wouldn't she be)
