Ahren awoke from her slumber, remaining still. The sun was barely peeking through the trees, but the birds were chirping wildly. Everything seemed so upside down. The events of the past few days didn't seem real, and each time she closed her eyes to sleep, the large queen wished to herself that it would all be a bad dream when she woke up the next morning. The rapid disappearance of prey, the forest being taken over, and wolves of her pack dying from the guns of two-leggeds...it was all so much. So unreal to her.

She had been forced to make a decision she didn't want to have to make, but she believed it was good for the pack. Dogs knew the ways of humans much better than the Windtooth Pack did. Some of those wild dogs had once been pets of the very two-leggeds that were destroying the land. They knew how they operated, how to live among them. Thier knowledge could be life saving for the Windtooth Pack and Ahren knew it.

Not all of her wolves had so much liked the idea, but they all agreed it would be for the best. She was still new to this whole leading the pack thing, but she was confident in her abilities. Stretching, she finally pushed herself to her paws, shaking out her thick coat and sending her muscles rippling across her body. It was time to start doing her morning rounds.

As she made her way through the large temporary camp, she swiveled her head around slowly, scanning the area to see if any wolves were up yet and how many. She saw a few here and there, crawling from their dens and heading towards the leftover carcasses from yesterdays hunt. She felt her spine tingling at the smell of the dogs within their camp. It was still so new and bizarre to have them living amongst what was once her pack and hers alone. Now she shared it with them, and she had no control over them...yet. She still had to choose a partner from one of them to help her lead both in a sign of peace and equality. The thought of mixing her bloodline with these canines irritated her slightly, and she worried that her ancestors would be angry with her and punish her more than they already were.

It's for the pack's well being. she thought, reminding herself. It would get better. Out of the dogs in her camp, she had been carefully considering who she would pick. It had only been a couple of days since the combining of the packs, but she needed to act quickly before any tensions broke out potentially risking their survival.

One of the dogs in particular stood out to her more than the others. His name was Luro, if she remembered correctly, and he was one of the more noble looking creatures. He looked the most like a wolf, and from what she'd seen of him he was respectable. He had the sense and knowledge to lead effectively if it came to it, and really that was what mattered. She lifted her snout to the air, taking in as many scents as possible. She could still smell the stale scent of two-leggeds, stinking up the forest. With a low grumble, she turned and stalked towards the carcass, sniffing it. It was the half eaten carcass of a moose, a fantastic kill, and the best they've had in months.

As she approached, some of the other wolves parted out of her way, lowering themselves to the ground and flattening their ears to their heads in respect. Almost like mewling puppies, the few closest to her began licking her maw and cheeks, their tails wagging vigorously. She greeted them back, raising her tail and growling. The pack knew she was slightly temperamental and aggressive, and she only tolerated so much at once. As soon as things carried on too long, Ahren snipped at them. She lowered her head and began tearing meat from the dead moose, the flavor hitting her tongue like a taste of heaven.

After eating her fill, she continued her rounds. Finally, she spotted Luro in the distance. Pausing for a moment to think, she watched him. Time was running out to choose someone to help her lead the newly combined packs, and so far he was the only one she could see making that happen. Heaving a sigh, she made her way over to him.

"Luro," she greeted formally, sitting once she approached him. Her bushy tail wrapped around her front legs, and she held her chin high, her postire confident. "I would like to speak with you privately if you have the time."

Luro was lightly asleep uncomfortable being in the wolves’ territory surrounded by them. When he heard growls and snarls, he became conscious to the world. Although he kept his eyes closed, he twitched his ears fine-tuning the direction the noise came from. He didn’t recognize all of the canine voices. However, he was able to tell the difference between dog and wolf voices.

“You can’t eat that,” a male wolf snarled.

“You can’t eat unless our alpha allows it.” A female wolf added. “That’s just how things are done and you need to get used to it.”

One of his own packmates Jackson whined. “I’m hungry, and we’re not just accepting whatever your leader tells us what to do. The deal is the deal. We need our own representation and voice when it comes to these matters. Y’all are the one’s who wanted to combine with us, remember? You need us. We can leave whenever we want. Bunch of bossy bigots,” he muttered under his breath.

Luro finally risked opening his eyes when he realized they were probably far enough away that they wouldn’t notice that he was awake. He checked his side and realized that his brother Bruno had left. So far his pack had done alright. He could agree with Jackson that they didn’t need the wolves, however, his pack struggled to work together and hunt as a team. Perhaps the wolves could teach them something. At the very least his pack was much smaller and he didn’t want to contest the wolves for territory. His brow furrowed at the tensions knowing that they wouldn’t get better in a hurry. That alpha, what was her name? Ahren. She needed to choose a mate before the dog packs decided that putting up with uppity wolves was not worth it and leave.

He stood up and padded to Jackson’s side. “Hey,” his tone was firm. In a quieter voice he continued, “Please don’t antagonize them.” He gave his packmate a meaningful look. As long as they were thinking about joining with the Windtooth pack there was no reason to antagonize them. They needed to get out of this negotiation alive, preferably without new enemies, and he didn’t think they could depend on the other large canine pack if it came to a fight.

Having averted the fight, he inspected the prey giving it a few cursory sniffs. The wolves had done well with remains of several large mammal carcasses. Luro was excited to learn how to hunt from them. If they could catch prey this large his pack would eat much better. He started to walk away not wanting to increase the tensions between the factions. He lifted his nose into the air trying to locate his brother. He started to head in his direction when he heard the snuffling and groveling as Ahren’s packmates greeted her. He struggled to hide the confusion that crossed his face as these proud wolves, many who wanted nothing to do with the dogs, lowered themselves to greet their leader. He cocked his head curious but confused. His pack was very much like a family. One of them was his full-blooded littermate brother. There was no clear-cut leader, and they often squabbled, but there was no mewling and appeasing some high-ranked leader.

He wiped his expression clean when he heard a wolf’s paw steps approaching from behind him. He turned and sat down waiting for her to reach him. He resisted the reflex to widen his eyes in surprise because Ahren the high and mighty alpha deigned to speak to him. “I think I can find time in my busy schedule for you.” He grinned at her very doggishly. His tongue lolled out momentarily in an expression of relaxation and friendliness. He stood and nodded his head away from the camp. “Shall we?” He stood tall and proud but remained relaxed and loose. His tail was slightly raised and wagged softly as he walked, but not high enough that it seemed like he was trying to confront a leader. It communicated a quiet confidence about himself.

“I commend you on keeping your pack so well fed. The carcasses you have left over have been impressive. I think my pack and I have been tense. The culture shock is something we haven’t experienced on this scale before. Sorry, what did you want to talk to me about?” He tried to start a little small talk before remembering that she had initiated the conversation, so he needed to wait for her to speak.

Ahren found his comment amusing, but refrained from making any expression. She flicked her ear in silent agreement as he nodded and invited her to come with him. She walked in step with him, admiring his confidence. Another good quality. He made small talk with her, and she listened until he had finished speaking, walking strongly and silently.

"Well I must admit, it's the best we've hunted since the herds began disappearing," she said. "I thank you for the compliment, however." He started to comment on the culture shock for himself and the dogs, and she held back a smirk. As far as she could tell the dogs had no sort of leadership roles or rankings at all. She didn't understand how they coordinated anything with no one to make all the decisions. Did they all just do everything? Did they pay no attention to each individual's personal strengths and weaknesses?

Ahren ran her pack to the best of her ability, working with her wolves as much as she could. An apprentice wanted to become a warrior? She would do her best to make that happen. But if that apprentice showed no strength in the areas it needed to become as successful as possible in that role? She would place them somewhere they would succeed.

"I'm sure the shock will pass," Ahren commented. "Along with it I wish for the tensions to pass." She stopped walking, looking at him directly now. "I came to talk to you about that very thing. I've been watching all of you closely, and I've come to a decision about choosing my partner in leadership." She sat down, her tail wrapping around her haunches. "You, Luro, above the rest have stood out to me. I admire your confidence and ability to know when to step up. You have the qualities of a good leader, and to keep peace among this new pack I would like to ask your opinion on joining me in leadership?" Ahren sat with her head held high. She looked rather regal in the light of the rising sun, her red-brown pelt glowing with an aura of gold.

Ahren had also considered Ringo, and Luro's own brother Bruno as canidates as well. She was impressed by Ringo's sheer size, and she liked his personality, but he was a bit too young and wasn't quite emotionally mature enough to have succeeded as a successful leader and mate. Bruno she considered for the same reasons as Luro, but was more impressed with Luro as a whole.

The large Alpha female was confident in her choice. If he didn't agree, she would ask his brother next. If that didn't work, she would approach Ringo, but only if both previous canidates did not want the role. She knew that the young dog would accept, she was a little more concerned about Luro's answer. She wasn't quite sure if he would accept or not, especially not without truly understanding what the role really meant, and everything he would now be responsible for.

"Before fully accepting or denying," she said, "I want you to know that this is a role you cannot just step down from, and something one must take seriously. If you choose to accept my offer, your decisions could affect many more lives than just your own, and you must be willing to stand by those decisions, even when the outcome is worse than you could possibly ever imagine." She remembered painfully of her parents before her, and the hard decisions they had to make in order to be sure that she would succeed.

She disliked thinking about the atrocities they commited to this poor pack. Despite the hatred Sadie may have towards Ahren's parents, the Gamma Chief never showed any dislike towards Ahren herself, and had claimed to forgive her parents for the sins they committed.

"You must also be aware of the fact that you are now taking the responsibility to father the future of this pack's bloodline and the new heir." she continued, flicking her ear. "This is not a decision to be taken lightly." She paused and shifted her pale gaze upwards, watching the sun slowly rise. "You do not have to choose right away," She told Luro. "You have until tomorrow night at moonrise to give me your final answer."

Luro attentively listened to her finding it interesting that this was a better catch than usual. He dipped his head acknowledging that the dogs would get used to it. At least they wouldn’t find it shocking. He was still nervous and skeptical that dogs and wolves could come together and knew that even if it weren’t shocking it could be annoying or the wolves could be scornful.

His mind was still somewhere else when she said the words “choosing my partner in leadership.” He pulled his mind from considering the pros and cons to working with wolves and what they could learn from the wolves to listen to Ahren. He hoped that she hadn’t noticed the lapse in his attention.

She looked quite fine and regal sitting there. He admired the way she had decisively and expeditiously came to a decision, and he remained still trying to control his usual tail and ear flicks of discomfort at the attention. His mind was sparking as surprise, nerves, ambition, and flattery coursed through his body. “We would truly be partners, equals who worked together for our pack’s good?” He needed that reassurance that his understanding was correct. “Who else have you considered and asked to do this? What would you do if all of your choices said no?” Knowing who would pick up if he didn’t choose this life would affect his choice as well. There were some dogs that he knew couldn’t handle the position, and he’d find a way to circumvent the issue or he would take on the job himself.

He was silent as she tried to illustrate to him what a momentous life change this would be for him. His life would never be the same again, and he would have to make hard choices. He cocked his head at her. “Of course I take this seriously.” Unspoken was that she would not have chosen him otherwise. “But I see your point. I need to consider all of the ramifications, and I cannot fully anticipate how this decision will go down. I admire your quick decisiveness, and thank you for not leaving us hanging unnecessarily long. This could not have been an easy decision. Have you asked your advisors for…well…advice?”

She had asked earlier what his opinion was on this choice, and he had still avoided the question as his mind had flooded with answers. He was afraid that he would choose this path for the wrong reasons. He needed some time to sit with the idea. “Thank you for giving me time to consider. I am not averse to the idea, but I do think it would be wise for me to have some time to think about it.” It struck him because of the questions that assaulted him that she knew nothing about him or any of the other dogs she may or may not be considering. She had made this decision promptly and she seemed quite confident. Would he be able to make decisions like this? How far was he willing to sacrifice his own personal comfort?

Moving on to a still delicate topic, he cocked his head. “I rather assumed there would be a chance of siring an heir, but the pack’s bloodline?” He waited to see if she would try to explain what that meant or if he needed to be more specific in his questions. “What if the way leadership is passed down changes once the packs combine fully? How prepared are you to adjust to some of our ways? Will you change anything to suit us? You are really certain that you are willing to have a half-dog be the heir?” He wasn’t how to ask but he wanted to know what their relationship would be like. Would they try to love each other like normal mates or would they keep their relationship amiable and cooperative? How monogamous did the wolves keep their relationships? What kind of loyalty could he expect from her? He needed the upfrontness but he didn’t know how to ask the question without causing offense.

“I am curious. Do the wolves have a reason behind a matriarchy?” While his pack was fairly leaderless there were more males than females in his pack, so there was more chance of one of the males leading or having the leadership skills needed to take charge in the moment.

Ahren wasn't exactly surprised by his questions. Of course he would want to know what was in it for him, and what this would mean exactly. "As Alpha Male, I would expect us to work together as equals and expect my wolves to treat you and their new packmates with the same amount of respect that they treat myself and each other." she answered. "As for my other considerations..." She began, her gaze shifting towards the pack in the distance. "I considered Ringo and your brother Bruno. I have yet to approach either of them about this." She admitted. "You stuck out to me the most, and if I'm being frank you are easier on the eyes than some." She gave him a small grin and flicked her tail, her tone of voice a bit hard to read. Was she being flirty or snide? The world may never know.

"If all said no I would simply have to change tactics to keep the peace. My wolves know heiarchy and structure, and this was the first solution that came to mind to keep the peace." She didn't have to verbally remind him that her pack was larger in numbers and physcially larger than most of the dogs, but it was hinted at. She wasn't sure how else to keep things familiar for her wolves while also making sure the dogs had their share of familiarity and power.

He asked her if she'd asked her advisors, and she flicked an ear. "I wanted to approach the situation on my own terms first." she admitted. "It was me who made the decision to come to you all for help, therefore I felt it should be my responsibility to find a way to make sure everyone gets what they need out of it." She paused, thinking. He did have a fair point. "I figured if you all refused my offer I would ask the Gammas for their input on what to do next."

He asked about the packs bloodline, and she got the feeling he may be a little confused. It had only been a couple of days, but it was easy for her to forget that the dogs knew nothing of her packs structure or functions. "I'm sorry I wasn't clear," she apologized sincerely. "If you accept the position it would mean our packs to be combined officially for as long as I myself am taking part in leading. Dogs would have the same opportunities as any others in the pack, which means the future of the pack starts with this choice." She hoped that made it a little clearer. Luro asked her if she would be willing to adjust her ways to theirs, and she was silent for a moment.

"Yes." she said finally. "We've lived this way for generations, but change is inevitable, especially now. If your dogs can adjust, so can my wolves. It's only fair." She was a little surprised by his question about the matriarchy, but tried to answer to the best of her ability.

"From my understanding, the first wolf who formed Windtooth Pack was a she-wolf. She went through countless trials and survived many disasters." She paused, remembering the story she'd been told as a pup. "The old legends say she was alone and with pup when she came to this unmarked land. Fell in love with a rogue who helped her raise her only pup once she gave birth. That pup was a female. It became tradition for generations for Windtooth to be led by the firstborn she-wolf of the previous Alpha Pair."

Ahren looked at Luro, thinking. "In the past, the Alpha Males have served simply as wolves to help supply the next heir, but in recent years they've had more equal opportunities." The way the pack functioned now was slightly different from generations ago. Instead of simply having a mate for the sole purpose of bearing heirs, the Alpha Male was now chosen by the Alpha Female after she had completed at least one full year of leadership. He would be given the same respect as her, and in charge of splitting the duties as leader.

"If I'm being quite honest," Ahren said, standing. "Us girls have done quite a decent job at leading for the past hundred years, and there's been next to no pack wars for generations. I'm fine with the next leader being mixed blood," she said. "But I am hesitant to break the matriarchy that's been keeping this pack running since the beginning."

He loved his brother Bruno, but he did tend to be more hotheaded and aggressive than Luro. He wondered how his brother would feel if he knew that he had been under consideration for this position. Would he be jealous? Relieved? Did his brother need to know? He decided it wasn’t his business to tell, but of course he would asks Bruno’s opinion about what his own decision should be. He was not a fan of the idea of Ringo leading. He was young, and he was from a different pack. He had no idea what that dog was like and frankly he hadn’t tried. He froze and cocked his head at Ahren’s comment about appearances. He was slightly surprised that had factored in although he supposed size mattered, and a more wolffish appearance might catch her attention. He didn’t know her well enough to be able to read her intonations of how he was supposed to take that comment, so he huffed lightly amused supposing he wasn’t to take it too seriously.

He was not surprised to hear that she would try a different method. He did find it interesting that she only considered the three of them prospective candidates. It did remind him of the tensions that had arisen between wolves and dogs. Even if the dogs matched the wolves in numbers, they did not have their teamwork, discipline, or physicality. Would the wolves be able to adjust or would the humans chase them out? The dog packs were smaller, more maneuverable, so they migrated easier and seemed less threatening to humans. He nodded his head seeing no reason to ask further questions, but still curious why she hadn’t asked for advice.

He was relieved by her patience as he didn’t want to seem dumb, oblivious, or that he had been deliberately not paying attention. He was glad to know that the dogs would have opportunities. He hoped that they wouldn’t be at too much of a disadvantage. He was pleased that she was willing to change things to suit the dogs, but he was a little bewildered by her determination to stick to the matriarchy. He had no reason to change it so if he took the position it didn’t seem like a bone he should pick at. He also felt like he was rather biased and if it worked for the wolves there was probably no reason to change it. He wondered if this arrangement would be easier if he had no responsibilities beyond being a sire. “When the alpha male was just for posterity did the alpha choose a male she loved or the best genetic choice?” After a little more talking he dipped his head. “Thank you for speaking to me and I appreciate your patience. I will give you my answer tomorrow.” Once he was sure she was on her way he went looking for Bruno his brother.

~~~
“Bruno! The alpha asked me to be the alpha male. She said I have until moonrise tomorrow to make a decision.” Luro announced without much preamble. “Sorry. Where have you been? What have you been up to?”
“That is insane Luro!” Bruno started circling his brother. “Are you sure she is serious and she meant you? Don’t try to distract me with other questions.”
“Wow,” his voice was very sarcastic. “Thanks for the vote of confidence. Didn’t mean to distract. I was trying to be thoughtful.”
“Sorry, you’re right. Who could do the job better?” Bruno quipped back at him. “Well…you got to tell me more than that. What are you thinking? What was she thinking? How will this work if we actually combine?”
“If we combine, I’m not completely against it, but I need some time to consider if I’m doing it for the right reasons, and if I will be as committed as this position needs me to be. I think I am suitable for the job.” He didn’t add that he thought he was as suitable as anyone else who was being considered. Was that arrogance? “She said that she thought I had the qualities needed. She made her decision really fast. She also said that it was a position for life, and she tried to warn me how difficult it would be.”
“No stepping down or backing out huh? Would y’all be equals? Would y’all be mates?” Bruno smirked at him. “She isn’t hard on the eyes.”
“Something like that.” Luro rolled his eyes. “Well, yeah, pretty much. Another thing, I need to know if you are willing as well. I don’t want you leaving this pack and leaving me behind.”
Bruno sighed, “What alternative would we dogs have?”
Luro smirked. “We could be chased out by a superior force, and then they might be chased out by humans. She did say she would find other measures to get peace for her pack.”
“Nice.” Bruno nodded. “I guess we’d be running far and hard if you don’t go through with this. Guess you need to ask the pack as well, but we’re all healthy and fit. We could find new territory.”
Luro groaned, “I don’t know why they care about us dogs so much. Most of them do not consider us equals in the least, and we don’t even eat the same food as them. The largest thing we’ve caught is a small deer. They take down the big ones. We have to resort to little critters.”
“Okay, okay,” Bruno chuckled, “You’re getting off track. Do you want the position or not?”
After some silent thought, Luro finally admitted, “I think we could learn a lot from the wolves, and I think they could learn something from us. I think this is a good idea.”
“There you have it. Let’s go talk to our pack about it.”
~~~

Jackson was uncomfortable with combining with the wolves. Shortcake was open, and so was Kieran. Bruno supported his brother. Luro believed that they should stay and make a home here. No one was assertive enough or certain enough to solidly disagree. Luro was glad that they appeared to be willing to follow Luro’s lead.

Chaos went to find his sister, Ahren. "Ah, there you are. I was wondering what you were up to." He found her after she had talked with Luro. "Is there something that needs to be done? What are you going to do about those dogs in our camp? They can't hang around indefinitely if we aren't going to officially combine. I suppose other than seeing where to attack our few weak points that even if they rise against us they shouldn't be able to win. We outnumber them, are larger and more fierce, and we work as a team. That dog with the weird-shaped snout looks very doggish. I think he comes from the pack with five dogs in it. He looks very suspicious. His fur is odd colors, and he occassionally slobbers without reason. Canines weren't meant to look like that," he shuddered.

~~~
Luro decided to give his decision to her a little early the next day. He went to look for Ahren while the sun was setting but still visible above the tree line. The sky was streaked with pink, purple, and orange. When he found her, he asked her if he could speak to her in private.
“I have decided to be your partner and alpha male.” While he knew he was unprepared as no one could be completely prepared he was prepared to be committed. His life would change and he would figure it out along the way beside Ahren. He ducked his head bashfully. “What happens next? Is there something I need to do?” From his observation and guess some sort of ceremony would happen. How would he be trained for taking up his position? Would he follow her around? Would she shove him into the deep end? How would he show his authority if the wolves didn’t listen to him?
"As far as I'm aware it always seemed to be a male with strong genes and a respectable bloodline." she answered honestly. "I'm sure there were more feelings involved than what meets the eye though, especially after having pups together." An odd look glimmered in her pale eyes, one that revealed perhaps her feelings towards Luro could change too. As much as she wanted to keep things professional for now, she didn't necessarily always want to be that way. Perhaps one day her heart could change, especially once they were officially joined together and the packs combined.
He thanked her for talking to him, and she nodded. "Thank you for listening," she said, getting to her feet. "And asking questions." She looked at him, an slight ornery smirk lining her maw. "And an added thanks for being a dog who seems fit for a wolf." She flicked her tail lightly over his snout, bapping his nose with it playfully before walking away. The large and regal she-wolf often kept her image up around her wolves, but something in her made her feel as if she was allowed to act more relaxed around the dog. Luro seemed professional when he needed to be, but perhaps he would bring out the puppyhood in her.
Ringo padded through the camp, his big head swiveling back and forth as he looked around. He could see a few wolves laying next to a large carcass, eating what was left and gnawing on bones. He licked his lips and sat down, watching and waiting. He wanted to see if he could try and take a bone to chew on later, but he didn't dare saunter up to three wolves next to their meal.
While watching, he noticed Luro approaching his brother. Ringo narrowed his eyes a bit. He didn't know the other pack very well, but the two males seemed to be a little excited about something. The sound of approaching pawsteps alerted him, and he turned to see Ahren stalking past towards her den. She smelled as if she'd been in close proximity to Luro. Snorting, the large mutt rose to his paws as the wolves around the carcass began to clear.
He slowly approached, walking with confidence but not arrogance. He passed by a red-brown wolf, his name was Chaos if he remembered correctly. He nodded a respectful greeting before taking a smaller rib bone into his maw and stalking off to find a shaded area to lay in.
Ahren moved towards her den, thinking over the discussion she'd just had with Luro. A familiar voice caught her attention, and she turned to see her brother approaching. "Hello Chaos," she greeted. She listened as he began asking questions about the dog situation, and sighed. "I've asked Luro to consider taking up the position of Alpha Male." she said, unsure of how her brother would react.
"I think it is best for the packs to combine in such trying times." She thought of the two-leggeds, taking their prey and killing her packmates. "They know how to survive against the two-leggeds better than we do. I think we can learn a thing or two from them." She paused before saying, "No matter how they look." She stared pointedly at him, referring to his comment about whom she assumed had been Ringo.
The dog was young and immature, and Chaos was right that he looked far too dog-like, but this was their home now too, and her wolves needed to learn how to treat the dogs as family. "If Luro accepts the offer I'll call a meeting tomorrow around moonhigh. For now though, do what you can to keep the peace."
Luro came to her around sunset to give his answer. He asked to speak with her in private, and she agreed, calmly excusing herself from the group of wolves she was speaking with. She walked with him near the edge of camp, the small creeks glittering pink and purple from the setting sun.
She was pleased to hear that he'd accepted her offer. She didn't have to ask anyone else, and she didn't need a second plan. "Thank you Luro," she said, her voice sounding relieved and the tension in her shoulders visibly relaxing. "I was hoping you'd say yes." He asked her what was supposed to happen next, and she smiled softly at his bashful look.
"I'll call for a meeting at moonhigh," she explained. "I'll announce your position and what it means for the pack. In a few days when the moon is full, I'll explain to you the ceremony and walk you through what will happen." She looked down at the small stream, watching the water bubble cooly over the rocks. "It's nothing scary, so don't worry."
There was a few moments of silence between them before she broke it by saying, "Do you have the time to hunt with me before moonhigh?"
