It was amazing how empty the school halls were when everyone's in class. Save for the custodians tidying up some corners, Kiro was able to walk casually wherever he pleased. No one would pay him any attention- they never do. Even during class time, a student in the halls would be assumed to be doing an errand, or heading to the bathrooms. Kiro walked confidently, because he did have an errand to do. A special errand that required his entire focus. Slipping into the teacher's longue was easy. With a small private school such as this, every teacher's schedule was packed to occupy every spare second. Kiro didn't bother to look around before walking straight to the computers. He pulled out gloves from his pants pocket, for once grateful for the school uniform they were required to wear. The uniform made him blend in, and it was easy to be ignored or forgotten- he wouldn't be surprised if the teachers marked every name present just because it was a hassle to actually do rolecall. Kiro sighed softly, picking his Math teacher's account for the student attendance. The teachers here were so trusting that they had their passwords saved. It was unbearingly easy to get away with anything. Kiro spent at least five minutes scanning through profiles, until he found his name. He eyed the profile picture, and couldn't help smiling. He wouldn't admit it out loud- but he found himself quite pretty. His pale skin contrasted with his thick dark, combed-back hair. With eyes such a deep brown, they resembled coffee- a smell Kiro adored. He was small for age, his lean body looking even smaller with too-big clothes. He didn't like his lips- they were naturally too red and he often dotted lip balm to make it look dull. Kiro tore his eyes away from his self-proclaimed beautiful image, instead reading down to his Math test scores. The most recent test had an A+, and Kiro grimaced. Too high grades would bring unwanted attention, so he editted the grades to a B-. The teacher wouldn't care- they were that oblivious. Kiro felt himself smile a little- now everything was going according to his plan. Now, he would only be seen as a slightly smarter-than-average English student, instead of a gifted child in all subject areas. He preferred it that way.

Sonora sat staring in surprise at the computer in front of her. It was a new year at a new job at a new school. Working as a substitute wasn't easy work, but at this school, the paycheck wasn't half bad. She had opened the computer to take attendance for the class she was substituting today, and was astonished to see a name she recognized. Alonzo, Kiro She knew that name! Not well, but she knew it! She stared at the screen for a moment more, her nails twiddling the mouse of the computer under her fingertips. A shy cough from the back of the class made her head snap up. "Kiro Alonzo?" She called. It was the first name on the list. There was no response. "Is there a Kiro Alonzo here today?" She called again. Students exchanged glances. "Alone-zo's missing again," a boy snickered to his friend in the back. Sonora scowled at him. "Can anyone tell me where he actually is? He's been marked present in all other classes today." A petite girl in the front timidly raised her hand. Sonora gestured to her. "He tends to leave every once in a while. Just... goes without letting anybody know." "Where does he go?" The girl shrugged. "I don't think he leaves campus, he'd get caught if he did. But other than that-" she shrugged. Sonora nodded. "Alright. I'll mark him as absent." She resumed calling roll and began class. ... The bell rung to end class, and Sonora dismissed the students. Her mind turned back to Kiro. She remembered him from almost ten years ago. She wanted to say hello, maybe check in on him. It seemed like he must have led a hard life so far. Slipping into her cardigan, she looked down on the ground where her purse typically should be. She groaned. She left it in the computer room from the previous class! Grabbing her lanyard and phone, she whisked out of the room and down the hall, hoping her purse remained untouched. Kiro didn't waste time logging out seconds before the bell rang- that way, he could blend in with the large amounts of students filling into the hallways. Kiro easily slipped through them, and was heading towards the next class to actually try to learn something. Only to get a little notification on his phone. Kiro looked at it- surprised to see an email notification for his absence in class. He mentally swore, annoyed because it could clearly only be a substitute teacher. Nothing else to do but to go back to the computers and fix it. Kiro rushed back- nobody paid him any attention because they were all rushing to go somewhere. Kiro went to the computers, standing as he logged into the school website for teachers- hurrriedly searching for his name. He was so focused he made a very rookie mistake- he didn't pay attention to his surroundings as he worked.

Sonora made her way swiftly to the teachers' lounge. She stepped into the room, stopping when she saw a young boy standing halfway hunched over one of the the computers in the corner. He was facing away, standing several feet away from her purse that sat on the ground. Sonora hesitated. She was pretty sure no students were ever allowed in here. She edged around him, straying towards her purse. He was clicking the mouse and pecking the keyboard in a hurried frenzy. Just as she was about to clear her throat pointedly, she saw his face. His face was narrower than it had been all those years ago, his eyes harder brow heavier, but it was unmistakable, especially after seeing that familiar name on the attendance list that afternoon. "Kiro?" She asked, incredulous. "Oh my goodness! It's been so long! You probably don't remember me, do you?"

Kiro jumped when his name was mentioned- it terrified him. No one at this school called him by his first name. Eyes narrowed and defensive, Kiro turned, glaring. Kiro squinted at the face, saw her unfamiliar but pretty features. She had to be a substitute eacher- why else would she be in this room? Kiro mentally groaned- he did not need to be tattled on by some temporary worker here. Maybe there was a way he could make her forget... he could- he really could. If Kiro wanted, he could pull the energy out of her, making her sleepy and in a daze. Then, she won't even remember what day of the week it was- much less meeting Kiro here! Kiro gave her a hard look, head tilting up as he looked over her once again, committing her features to memory. She was far taller than him- he'd give her a bit under six feet. He didn't like that height difference, but decided it didn't matter. They wouldn't be meeting often again anyways. Brown hair, brown eyes- feminine and undeniably good looking. Kiro took in her dress code- casual- and she wore a bracelet that intruiged him for some reason. Kiro finally made eye contact with her, "Who are you. What do you want from me?"

Sonora blinked as intense dizziness washed over her, fogging her mind and blurring her vision. "I- you-..." She steeled herself. "You don't remember me?" She gripped the edge of the table as Kiro's intense gaze continued to burn into her, forcing her to glance away. She squeezed her eyes shut. Why was she suddenly so achey? "I knew you when you... sorry-" she said, trying to ignore his persistent glare as she eased herself into a chair by the desk. "We were neighbors. When you were little. I just wanted to say that its good to see you." Sonora smeared her palm down the length of her face, trying to focus. "All I'm trying to say is, I know your life hasn't been easy so far and that I'm glad to see you here at such a nice school." Sonora reached out and placed three fingers on the back of his hand gently. "You're going to do good things here. Everything will be okay," she said sympathetically. As she finished speaking, she nearly doubled over in pain. Nausea. Nausea so strong and sudden she almost cried out seized her abdomen. She glanced around the room, snatching her arms back and wrapping them around her sides, trying to spot the nearest trash can. Edited at May 20, 2021 02:43 AM by Saguaro
