Zeph kept her spot on the edge of the bed as Josef moved closer. Her head dipped slightly lower when he sat beside her, staying almost unnaturally still as he reached to tuck her hair behind her ear, something he had a habit of doing. Nor was their any resistance, but there wasn’t any assistance either when he moved her face towards him so he could see the red mark she had worked on being sure to make noticeable. Her eyes very slightly lifted at his pet name for her before falling again at the gentle reprimand of sorts.

She finally lifted her eyes slowly, allowing them to very cautiously meet the gaze that had been looking for her. Blinking,, the light hazel orbs fell again, one of her hands moving to gingerly rub along her bicep as if uncertain and a sign that she was still a tad upset and unsure. It was still all an act, but she was or at least believed she was playing it well. A lot of things depended on it, and hopefully if it was just right, she could also be given a few days off. Even one would be accepted.

As Josef settled in, Zephyra lightened some of her reaction, as though having the prince close actually made her relax some. A way to stroke his ego. Slowly she lifted her legs onto the bed to sit cross legged, daring again to look at him, though under her lashes and still meekly. “It was my fault, m’lord,” she offered, head turning away again as if ashamed to even admit it. But this was the plan, to make it seem as though she fully blamed herself yet twist the story in such a way that truly painted Heinrey as the complete monster.

Her hand fell from her arm and for a moment, she reached out to tenderly touch his, though her fingers only gently brushed against the back of his hand before she withdrew it as if slightly afraid to touch him, even though she wanted to, in the ways she knew he liked. “I allowed myself to start to drift to sleep when he brought me to his room,” the woman explained, being sure to lay out her guilt first, head sinking slightly. “I should have been more vigilant m’lord. I knew he was in a bad mood when he took me on my way from time with Ascalo and Cyrus. I should have tried to please him more when he asked me to sit on the edge of his bed while he undressed. But I was negligent... he was quiet and I must have dozed in the silence. The slap that came to awaken me was well deserved, I should have been more aware.” Her fingers reached up to her cheek before falling again.

“I am so sorry m’lord. I wished not to cause trouble.” Her voice gave a almost unnoticeable waver at the end, arms pulling to hug around her waist. She hoped that she had laid it out well, making clear that she had just finished pleasing both twins and that he started out in a bad mood. And of course she added in that Heinrey had asked her to settle at the edge of the bed away from him and had gone quiet while undressing, being sure to mention that the very first action had been a hit across the face. It was her way of turning the prince into the bad character while seeming as though she accepted that she was in full fault.

It was as she finished that part that she lifted her face again, glancing at his hair. Zephyra reached up hesitantly, glancing towards him as if to make sure it was okay before allowing her slender fingers to gently touch the familiar strands. The man liked touching hair, and he liked his hair touched so she hoped to use that to her advantage, though was sure to be very cautious in the action, as if Heinrey had made her uncertain about even touching the others. “Forgive me,” she spoke out gently referring to the incident, finally seeming to have enough courage to actually reached to the tie.

“May I, m’lord?” Zeph asked, voice hesitantly, fingers brushing against the tie. It wasn’t something that she had really asked before, other times when he simply wanted her presence for her touch, he would simply allow her to take the tie and reset his hair for him. And she did it often if he was about to leave his room. It was almost a simply accepted gesture that two shared, but this time she acted as though she was afraid to truly make a mistake that could result in abuse, even one that was already known to be acceptable. A finger very briefly brushed against the back of his neck before being pulled back, her gaze falling again as she started to pull her hands away.

Josef was pleased that she began to relax, only because it made the situation seem a little bit better. The prince wasn’t sure what to do, not necessarily feeling obligated to fix what Heinrey had done yet not wanting to leave her in that startled state. So instead, he just listened as she began to speak, the woman clearly hesitant with the world around her. It was a rather sad sight and Josef couldn’t help but feel some sympathy, even if he tended to air on the side of arrogance. Who wouldn’t at least feel some pity for the hurt woman?

The story was a rather classic outburst on Heinrey’s end, except this time he found it okay to result in abuse. Granted, it was the woman’s job to please, but the transgression had been so minuscule compared to the punishment. She had just been tired, but nothing else. There had been no real disobedience there, only a small mistake. And for that, Josef could find it reasonable to take her side. Not that she really fought for herself, but the prince was aware that Heinrey wasn’t to be unnecessarily cruel. Not when the woman had made such a small error.

Everything had exploded into something so far out of proportion over… nothing. And that’s what irritated Josef. His sister had clearly been irritated and the youngest was terrified, not to mention Solomon, who had clearly been angry regarding the entire fiasco. He was sure Heinrey wouldn’t be pleased with his scolding either, so the eldest prince assumed there would be some tension for at least a few days. Ascalo and Cyrus probably wouldn’t care, or if anything, they would side with Heinrey simply because he led their little clique, even if they had different opinions.

To be frank, it was never easy when there was a disagreement in the Imona palace, especially when all siblings were involved. The princesses were meant to stay away from anything involving their plaything, but the middle prince had thrust everything into disarray with his bout of anger. Josef couldn’t help an exasperated sigh, something he seemed to be full of that day. Because the more he thought about it, the uglier it all seemed to be. He would have to talk to Ryia at some point… maybe have Cyrus watch her for the day to make sure she felt safe after what she’d heard. If Vivianna had to spend the night with her she would probably need some extra attention.

Josef was brought back to reality as her fingers reached up to touch the inky strands that framed his face. There was a faint smile of encouragement on his lips, though he wasn’t known for grinning. “It’s alright doll, no need for apologies now,” He sat up, fingers reaching out to cup her cheek, thumb moving back and forth over the creamy skin in a gesture that could best be described as soothing, “Although I will agree that you should have been more aware, I do believe my brother shouldn’t have been so rough. There was no need for such excessive force.”

His hand reached up to smooth over her hair a few times, perhaps another attempt at comfort on his part, before it fell back into his lap.”Especially not with someone who has done her best to please,” The man complimented softly, “But all will be handled, so no need to fear him being so physical again. I am sure he will be more careful in the future.” Josef knew he should probably leave soon and send her back to her quarters, just so he could continue on with his day, but the man figured he could at least stay with her for a little longer.

In all honesty, he was really not looking forward to speaking to Heinrey. The brother was bound to brood for the rest of the day. The man had been about to respond to her inquiry as she began to pull her hands away, which he caught with his own. “I just wanted to speak before I forgot, no need to take that as a rejection,” Josef reassured, giving her hands a squeeze before releasing them, “So yes, you may continue. You’re alright now, everything will be taken care of.” He told her firmly, taking unusual care with his words. The brothers were selective with their humanity, to say the least.

She had hit her mark, and that was all that mattered. It was evident the moment Josef allowed a small smile to tug at his lips and assured her the apology was no longer necessary. And then there was a compliment. Perhaps if she was a complete pushover or actually had a heart for the man, she would have been touched. But Zephyra held not even an inkling of love for this man or any of his brothers, nor could she truly care except it meant she still was in a safe position with him.

Every moment that her act was winning was giving her hidden courage, disguised by the looks she had been giving him to play the part. Somehow, Heinrey’s attempt to tear her down had ever so slowly shifted her mindset to start playing this dangerous game. Before it had been just getting through each day. That and Solomon. The man had in ways challenged her. Now was she about to be stupid about it? No. Absolutely not. Everything would stay the same except her attention would be even more acute.

When his hand caught hers, her hazel eyes met his and she offered him the softest of smiles, seemingly genuine in nature. “You are a good man,” she whispered softly, shifting closer to him, fingers carefully taking the tie out and running through the dark hair. The woman shifted to sit behind him, expertly and ever so gently pulling his hair back and into a neat, small man’s bun. She made sure to have her slender fingers brush against his dark skin while she did so.

“There you are, m’lord,” she purred softly, some of her usual elegance coming back into her voice. Her arms very gingerly snaked over his shoulders, hands running under his shirt and down his chest as her chin rested on his shoulder, though her hold was very light so he would know she was not restraining him or resisting his leaving. Her head tilted so her nose and lips brushed against his neck. Her touch was delicate, as it often was, though there was still just some faint hesitancy she played in. “Your graciousness will be remembered.” A soft kiss was pressed at the back of his jaw before she slowly released him.

“I will not cause you such trouble again, m’lord,” the woman reassured, shifting to sit beside him, hand moving over his arm, pausing at the bicep where her fingers traced the muscle lines as of admiring them. And then ever so slowly, she leaned into him, releasing the softest of relieved sighs, fully relaxing as if she truly felt safe. She would never say it, but for her, the safest place was with Solomon, because he did NOT take advantage of her position. But her main goal was to stroke Josef’s ego, as if he himself had been finally able to soothe her.

However, there was fine line between clinging and simply showing trust. So she slowly unfolded her legs, bare toes touching the ground as she stood, hand sliding down his arm to fit into his. Her smile was still very soft, but she allowed her face to perk up some. “Will I be seeing you tonight m’lord?” she inquired, allowing a near hopeful note to touch her tone as if she did look forward to their time. Her smaller hand squeezed his lightly and her chin lifted a fraction to regain some of her usual elegant posture. “I could wear the blue dress,” she offered, having learned which of the outfits she preferred. Though for the final touch, she glanced at the door as if nervous.

Josef gave a soft snort as she called him a good man, leaning back on his palms as her fingers ran through his hair as they commonly did. Sometimes, it seemed like the man just wanted some sort of company and that was enough. “I wouldn’t exactly consider myself “good”. I would say “decent” is more accurate.” He responded, eyes closing for a few moments, while she expertly combed through his hair to pull it into the desired style, which was whatever she fancied at that moment, as Josef really just wanted the gentle touch more than anything.

“I am sure it is exquisite, per usual ” Josef spoke as she finished, leaning back into her as warm fingers slipped beneath the fabric of his shirt, spanning over his skin. The prince had always enjoyed the intimacy and if anyone had seen them, one would have thought the domestic scene was a rather romantic one between two lovers. If only there was any emotional attachment. What they had was pretty much platonic and did not go beyond the fact she was in the castle to serve him and he was to receive. Even if he often treated her like a lover, the foundation of their relationship stayed the same.

Josef looked over at her as she shifted away, relaxing himself as the woman’s fingers were busied with tracing over his arm. “I am sure you won’t,” He purred out, pleased with her own progression and satisfied that everything on her end was wrapping up nicely. There were still ripples, but all that was really left was to take care of his brother, then let the palace dynamic heal. “After all, you have proved to be rather good company to keep. Very eager to please.” He commented, leaning his head against hers as she sighed. At least it seemed he wasn’t going to be spending hours trying to pick up his brother’s mess.

As she got to her feet, it was a small reminder he also needed to get going, as he had work to return to once he was done with his brother. So, unfortunately, he could not spend his day hiding in his brother’s room with Zephyra. Again, her voice brought him back to reality, dark eyes blinking up at her. “Of course doll,” Josef’s fingers tightened around hers for a moment, “and I would love that. That one is certainly my favorite on you.” He got to his feet, glancing around his brother’s room for a moment. It had been years since he had been in there.

“Feel free to come over anytime after the sun begins to set. My door is typically unlocked.” Josef told her, tugging her gently towards the door, ”Come on, I’ll walk you back to your room since I’m sure Solomon wouldn’t appreciate you in his quarters all day. Besides, I’m sure you’d like to bathe, you’ve been in here since yesterday. I’m sure Heinrey won’t come in your direction for a while, so you could be completely free for the day.” He encouraged, having noticed her rather cautious look, though he didn’t blame her for it. And with that, the man opened his brother’s door, leading the woman out into the hall.

~~~~~~~~~
Two Weeks Later...
Attikos
Solomon hadn’t come into work that day, and as it was mid-afternoon, there were a few things they needed him to sign as well as approve of. So, it was up to Attikos to hopefully pin down the general for his word, and since no one had seen him exit the palace, it was safe to assume he was still holed up in his room. That meant he wasn’t to be disturbed, which was another reason they had sent Attikos. It was a not-so-secret that he was the general's favorite, despite him simply being a lieutenant. It was unlike Solomon to miss a workday, but the lieutenant knew to move forward, they needed his approval.
So, with the assistance of Ascalo and Ryia, Attikos was escorted to the prince’s room. Only one person had really been necessary, but he had seen them playing in a sunny spot in the courtyard. It wasn’t uncommon to find one of the elder siblings and the youngest out there together. The lieutenant was actually grateful for the little girl's presence, as she made it a lot less awkward overall.
“So you work for Sol?” Ryia questioned, tugging on Attikos’s sleeve for his attention for what was probably the fifteenth time, “Are you a soldier too?”
Attikos nodded with a grin, peering at her from beneath his messy blonde curls, “Yes princess, I work for your brother as a soldier.” He chirped back, “Though he is a much braver soldier than I, I must admit.”
This answer seemed to please her, as she beamed with bright eyes. It was incredible how remarkably similar they all looked, not many differences at all. “That’s why Solomon is my favorite!” She declared, to which Ascalo snorted, “Be quiet Ascalo! You know I love you too.” She fired back, but immediately returned to her other company, “Josef always shows me where Solomon goes on a map in my room. You guys go everywhere.” It was then her face grew a little sad as she looked up at him, "Don’t you miss your family, Attikos? You are gone for so long… Sol was gone for two years and I missed him a lot.”
“I haven’t seen my family in eight years,” Attikos explained, “but I do miss them every day. Just like the general misses you every day he’s away too. He talks about you all the time while we’re away. I’m sure he’d take you with him if he could.” He told her, which made the young girl smile once more. It was quite cute, her obsession with the general who had been absent for a good chunk of her life. He couldn’t count how many times she’d burst into the barracks with another brother in tow, demanding the attention of her brother, to which the great General Imona never failed to hoist her into his arms and entertain her.
So, as they arrived at Solomon’s quarters, he promised Ryia to tell her brother hello for her and received a rather shocking look of approval from Ascalo. Those brothers and their youngest sister… they would tear each other apart over nothing but they all seemed to share a rather odd devotion towards the youngest Imona. Attikos knocked on the door and announced himself before he entered, but he found the desk empty. “General?” Attikos questioned, to which there was no response. Had he left? The fire that flickered from the fireplace said that he had been in, but if he had just left, wouldn’t they have run into him?
Attikos was just about to leave when he saw a boot. Dark eyes narrowing, the lieutenant approached, and that was when he found the general. Except, he was completely unconscious in front of the fireplace wrapped in a blanket and curled into a ball, shivering as if he were freezing. “General!” Attikos exclaimed, falling to the ground beside him, reaching out to try and wake him. At first, he shook him, and when no response came he felt his head. The man was on fire. Attikos cursed, abandoning the man to go get help. Solomon looked awful.
He looked half-dead.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Three Days Later…

Josef

It seemed Solomon had contracted some virus, which didn’t end up being as shocking as it should have been. All too quickly they discovered he hadn’t been sleeping, eating regularly, or taking a break from work. It had been easy enough to get the information out of him, given as he had barely even lucid when Josef had sent a barrage of questions his way. The man had never been particularly sickly, but since the meal schedule had been just as erratic as his sleep one, he was a prime target. Now Josef was left to deal with him, given as he was the only one who cared enough to do so and their mother was busy with their father.

Except Solomon wasn’t making the job easy. First, he had somehow managed to escape the infirmary. How, when he had the movement capabilities of someone who was blackout drunk, Josef did not know, but the general made it clear he wanted to be in his room. Okay, fine. He would just have a nurse stay in the man’s room, since the fever was yet to break. That had seemed easy enough. At least, it did until the prince had managed to scare off the entire nursing staff in thirty-six hours. Apparently, he had even thrown a dagger at one. He could barely even move. How in the heavens was that even possible?!

Josef forked a hand through his hair, which was ragged compared to his usual put-together appearance. “Solomon,” He hissed, glaring at his brother, who was wrapped up in a sheet, back to him. All he could see was his dark head and shoulders, which only further infuriated his sibling. In his hand, Josef clutched a set of instructions from the nurses, but Solomon wouldn’t comply with him either and he had work to do. “I am going to funnel this up your ass if you don’t take it right now.” He snarled, reaching over and heaving his brother towards him.

Solomon’s eyes only narrowed to slits, dangerous golden hues that clearly said he wasn’t going to do what Josef wanted. “Try me,” The man rasped from beneath where the sheet was held over his nose. It was clear the man was miserable and it was surely part of why he was lashing out, but Josef was at the end of his patience. “I’m not taking anything. I’m fine.” The younger prince added, to which Josef only scoffed. Both of them knew that wasn’t the case and that Solomon just wanted to be left alone. He didn’t want any help.

“Well that’s too damn bad,” Josef hissed back, snatching the cup off the nightstand, “The nurses said you need to be taking this and you are going to take it.” He hissed, moving the cup towards his brother.

And that was when all hell broke loose.

It would have been a rather comical fight if the situation wasn’t a rather serious one. Josef was struggling to force his brother's mouth open while holding the glass in the other hand, which sloshed dangerously. There were curses and many death threats, but most of it was just garbled hollers as they fought. Both were determined to hold their ground and for once Solomon was at a disadvantage, as in his current state, he was currently weaker than Josef. But as always, stubbornness was on Solomon’s side.

“DAMMIT!”

The outburst came from Josef, whose shirt was now covered in the medicine Solomon had slapped out of his hand. The cup shattered on the floor loudly, the noise echoing in the room. Josef clenched and unclenched his fists as his brother rolled back over. And for a moment, there was silence, the prince taking a deep breath. Then, his food suddenly connected with the chair he had been sitting on sending it flying into the wall loudly. Josef let out another yell, infuriated and done, then stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind him.

“Just let him die, Josef,” He muttered, rubbing his temples, “Just let him shrivel up and die. It’s fine Josef. It’s fine.” The last part came out as a hiss as he paced for a few moments, the disgusting medicine smell filling his nose. The prince looked like hell, with the knotted hair and stained shirt. “He’s just your kid brother right? You have three more, don’t you? Ones that don’t hold swords to your throat and threaten you. ONES THAT DON’T SPILL MEDICINE ALL OVER YOU AFTER TERRIFYING ALL THE NURSES!” He hollered back, shooting an icy look at Solomon’s door.

Running fingers through his hair and growling when they got caught, Josef started to head back to his room in search of a change of clothes. What the hell was he going to do? He figured his father could order a nurse to take care of him, but would Solomon even take the medicine then? What was his friend's name… Attikos? Maybe he would know how to deal with him… Who knew that a soldier reduced to his weakest point would then become the most difficult. “The hard-headed pig.” He muttered, but as fingers grabbed the handle to his door, his dark eyes darted one room over.

Zephyra.

Solomon practically hogged her half the nights nowadays and during the day as well. Whatever she did with him had clearly worked, as their brother had gone from some snobby virgin to an actual deviant. Well, the snobby part had remained, but that wasn’t the point. The point was that the woman had worked some sort of magic on him, given as he went from hating her to sleeping with her every few days. As much as he didn’t want to subject her to his angry, tantrum having brother, she was Josef’s last option before he was truly stuck. Hopefully, he didn’t throw a dagger at her as well…

So it was with that plan at a last-ditch effort Josef burst into her room, eyes frenzied and stressed. Unfortunately one of his brothers was also in there, which was the last thing he needed right now. Sick sibling… naked sibling… when did it end?! What had Josef done to deserve this? “Cyrus,” Josef snapped, “Put some clothes on and get out.” He just wanted to change his shirt… he smelled like rotted herbs. Heavens he needed tea with Vivianna... His thoughts were interrupted as his brother glared at him and spoke.

“Josef-”

Now!”

Cyrus seemed to sense Josef’s mood, as he didn’t attempt to protest again, only clothing himself and exiting as ordered, which left him with the woman. For a moment, he didn’t speak, only took a deep breath and ran a hand over his face. He pinched the bridge of his nose, searching for words. “I…” Josef trailed, falling silent again, “As you’ve probably heard, Solomon is sick.” He finally managed, raising his eyes to meet hers, “And unfortunately, he’s not accepting the help of anybody, nor is he taking his medication. He’s been running a constant fever and can’t keep food down whatsoever. I don’t think it’s deadly, but if he continues to refuse treatment, then it will just get worse.”

Another deep breath. This was not how he wanted to spend his day. “And he has also scared away the entire infirmary staff. Nobody wants to be in there with him,” He explained, eyes falling to the floor. Goodness, this was embarrassing. He had failed to take care of his own brother and now he was asking her for help?! A sigh escaped him, as one often did, but this time it was one of frustration, “Solomon clearly likes you, since he wants you in his bed half of the time,” Josef pointed out, fidgeting, which was a sign of his distress. “So, will you go in there and work with him? There’s a set of directions on the nightstand and I’ll have new medicine sent over, since I’m wearing the last dose.”

Josef leaned against the door, letting the back of his head thunk against the wood. “He needs someone with him constantly. I slept on his couch last night. I have too much work and not enough patience for this.” He continued, rubbing at his temples once more. He had a horrible headache. Damn Solomon anyway… “If he tries to get another blanket, he’s not supposed to have them, the same thing with clothes. He has pants on, but it wouldn’t have been anything you haven’t seen anyways…” Josef trailed, “So, will you go?”

Heinrey had mostly left her alone since the whole blow-up, and Solomon allowed her in his room more often. The reality of the whole deal came down to actually helping Zephyra in the end. Mostly. Heinrey still did take some time with her, though it was only a few times in two weeks compared to his usual demand, and every moment with him was precarious. Not because he wasn’t being careful but because by nature the woman knew he was a brooder, and every once in a while, she could catch the look of deep anger towards her in his eyes. But she played her part well with him, listening intently and watching his body language to maximize her chances of making sure not to push his buttons.

However, most of the time, she was safe. The nights when Solomon didn’t call for her to keep up their façade, she sought Josef’s company. Not because she wanted his affections, the man simply liking to be touched and have something to touch, but it ensured Heinrey never snagged her in the dark. A tired man could be a dangerous one when he was the brooding sort. Josef tended to be tired as well, but he was much gentler by nature and he could ensure an entire night of safety. And she had gotten rather good at making herself important to him, playing the act as far as that she put most of her trust in him, sometimes hidden in soft words while they were laying together, sometimes by being the one to seek his company. And on the occasion, brightening up if she spotted him in the hall. It was amusing really, one doing it to survive and get security, the other because they were deprived of love... and yet neither loved, and chances were neither ever had in more than a platonic way.

The days were a bit harder, which was ironic considering one would assume her nights would be the worst. But when Solomon didn’t keep her longer to help with paperwork, the twins took the daylight hours to call their own with her. Which the word was Solomon was sick, explaining why the past few days she had not even seen him. So the twins had a lot more time with her, though by this point, she had grown more accustomed to it and did a decent job pleasing and entertaining them. Which is what she found herself doing with Cyrus at the moment, the young man having come to her room to seek her attention and affections.

And that was most definitely what he received, as was usual, though perhaps she had become even more attentive than she had two weeks ago, which Cyrus was clearly soaking up. A shout from Josef had resounded through the hall, somewhat startling both, Zeph cringing very slightly but quickly distracting Cyrus once more and ignoring it. It wasn’t often one heard Josef yell, but he wasn’t who she was trying to please at the moment. Which brought her to stroking her fingers through Cyrus’s hair, exchanging soft whispers, mainly the man talking about whatever and her making tiny comments to agree with him or make him feel special while he moved his hands where he wished.

At least until her door was thrown open to reveal Josef, who while unfortunate to have chosen now, was not so unlucky as he may have been a few minutes earlier. It was clear by the look in the eldest’s eyes that whatever it was took full precedence, even Cyrus moving away at the very clear point that everything was over. Zephyra calmly reached for her robe at the end of the bed and slid it on, shifting to the edge to watch the younger brother leave before looking at Josef expectantly, but in the gentlest and most inviting of ways. She knew Josef was not looking for the usual, and that he was flustered so she waited quietly and patiently for him to get his words together.

It did concern her when he mentioned what was going on with Solomon, the woman having been too busy to actually know what was going on. It wasn’t so much the way Josef put it, but the fact that Josef was clearly at his wit’s end and flustered, something she had never seen of what was usually a dignified man. As he actually asked for her help, Zeph was rising to her feet, striding over to the prince who was clearly struggling, genuine sadness in her eyes. They had all hurt her in ways they would never understand. What they did to her was normal for them but... it did not change the fact in her eyes that they were human. Except perhaps Heinrey who would never get an ounce of sympathy from her. But Josef did. At least Josef was the kindest, Solomon excluded since he comparatively treated her right. It was a shame really, and she knew it. Josef could have had a chance in life had he been born in any other family. But that was not the case.

Of course I will go, m’lord,” she agreed, nodding softly, reaching up to brush a strand of hair from his face. Zephyra stepped away long enough to go over to her wardrobe, reaching down to sort through the small collection she had of different clothes for the brothers, nothing major just a few shirts and pants that had been left or brought to her in case. Picking out one of Josef’s shirts, she brought it over to him with a soft smile. “I always have spares m’lord, if you wish to change. I do believe I should be better dressed for tending to your brother myself,” she smiled, inviting him to stay while she quickly changed herself.

The woman took one of her looser outfits, which also happened to be one the others weren’t as fond of so if she ended up wearing some medicine too, it would not be as big a deal. And it luckily also happened to be a bit more modest to fit Solomon’s comfort zone. She did not take long, moving for convenience instead of pleasure this time around. As soon as she had slipped into the clothes, she made sure to step over to Josef one more time, reaching to gently move her hands through his hair to smooth it out before expertly moving to her toes and carefully pulling it into a half up, half down hairstyle. “You look magnificent m’lord,” she complimented before offering him a gentle parting kiss and making her way to Solomon’s room. Really, it was all just damage control, trying to throw Josef back into a good mood and hopefully making an impression that would continue to keep her in a safe place in his eyes. Other than the platonic sympathy for his state, she felt nothing.

Quietly she made her way across the hall, reaching the prince’s door and resting her hand on the knob. Carefully she pushed it open and slid inside, closing the door behind her. Hazel eyes rested on the bed where the large man was curled up in a blanket, back to her. The broken cup was still shattered on the floor, testament to what had happened. “Josef asked me to come help,” she said lightly, mainly to inform the man of her presence. Though at the moment, before anything else, her focus was cleaning up the glass, going into the bathroom to retrieve the broom and pan. Returning, she made quick work of collecting the pieces and throwing them out.

With that completed, Zephyra moved around the bed to the side Solomon was facing, looking over the rather sick bundle. It was a sharp contrast compared to how she had seen the man before. And for him, she felt a real twinge of emotion. Reaching for the instructions, she read them over carefully, glancing at the prince a few times. She carefully extended her hand to touch his forehead before drawing back with some concern. “You, m’lord, seem to be trying to become hades yourself,” she said softly and lightly, not showing her concern or sympathy. She had a feeling Solomon would have a fit if she did.

With that, she left his side to return to the bathroom, grabbing a clean cloth and a bowl, filling the bowl with cool water and bringing it out. Placing it on the nightstand, she dipped the cloth in it and rung it out. Gingerly sitting on the edge of his bed, she brought the cloth towards his forehead, noting how heavily he was sweating. “They will be bringing your medicine in soon. Anything I should be aware of?” she inquired, head tilting slightly.

Solomon

“Josef sent me to come help.”

Zephyra.

Solomon squeezed his eyes shut at the sound of her voice, trying to wonder what the hell he had done to deserve this. He had just wanted to work… serve his empire in war… not get sick. It was ridiculous, the state he was reduced to. He could barely even move. Granted, he had gotten to his room from the infirmary, but that had been a painful endeavor and his condition had only worsened. He didn’t protest as he heard her cleaning up the glass, remembering how it had shattered then his brother had kicked the chair. Solomon had already forgotten, more focused on his pounding head.

His eyes cracked open as he heard her step around the bed, the man glaring at her. Though, the gesture only further angered his throbbing head, so his eyes closed again. Hopefully, she would just leave him alone. That didn’t seem the case, as a hand made contact with his forehead, causing him to draw back with an audible hiss. “I’m fine.” He muttered, voice rough from the sore throat. The man sounded like he had sand in his throat and it hurt to swallow. And when he did go through the painful process of eating, he had only thrown up anything he had consumed. How wonderful.

But, the fever, as she had commented on, had been the worst thing thus far. Solomon felt like he was freezing, yet he knew that wasn’t the case. His clothes and blankets had been stolen, though he’d had a fit when they tried to take his one sheet away. Solomon refused to lie their exposed. He continued to listen as she went into the bathroom, not wanting to put the effort into opening his eyes. It was clear he felt awful, as he didn’t really move and his breathing was rather wheezy. He only sat up to blow his nose here and there, but even that took effort.

The man visibly flinched as the cloth was placed against his head, but didn’t make a move to remove it, only because it actually proved to be soothing. Well that, and his fingers were wound tightly into the sheet he clutched as if it were some sort of protection from his sickness. He frowned at the mention of medicine. Call it childish, but the man didn’t want to take the disgusting fluid. He just needed a few days to rest. Well, a few more days, since he’d already taken three. “Just have them take the medicine back, I’m not taking it.” He managed to rasp out.

All of it had been unexpected. One moment he had been fine, just with a runny nose and a tight chest. Another, he had passed out in front of the fireplace after moving there because he was cold. That was when the fever began and it had been relentless since. “There is no need for you to be here,” He told her, “I don’t need, nor want your help.” He should’ve known Josef would have tried to send her. The man was convinced that they held some sort of passionate chemistry, so of course, he would use her in hopes Solomon would listen. If only their relationship was anything but a lie.

“Just go… pleasure my brothers or something of the sort. Go do your job instead of playing nurse because Josef’s an idiot.” It was probably the first time Solomon had insulted any one of his brothers in front of her, as he typically spoke of them in high regards. But he was irritated and hurting in a variety of ways, so his patience and filter had dwindled greatly. “You are not wanted.” Solomon huffed out and his words were followed by a small coughing fit that pained his chest. With a growl, the man rolled over, the washcloth falling as he turned away from her.

Zephyra was somewhat relieved that he didn’t pull away when she pressed the cool cloth to his forehead. Then again, it was probably soothing, assuming he had a pounding head with his fever, which was only natural. Though there was concern when he stood by his decision not to take the medicine, something she was had yet to figure out how to give him. It was a rather hard position, Josef expecting her to make progress, and yet she had to be careful of her bounds with Solomon. It was something she would have to think fast on.

His raspy declaration that he did not want her help was not unexpected and she said nothing. Truth seemed to be that Solomon didn’t want anyone’s help anyway. Pulling the cloth away, she dipped it back into the water to cool it down, ringing it once more before pressing it back against his head, wiping as soothingly as gently as she could. People could survive with fevers for weeks, she knew that much, but what was worrisome to her was what had caused it. Perhaps more than it should or she even realized. In her mind Solomon was a friend in this palace of horrors.

His second attempt to send her away caused her to pause, not accustomed to him speaking ill of his brothers in any way. But her expression softened some when he spoke yet again about her not being wanted, the man seized with a coughing fit before childishly pulling away from the wet cloth and placing his back to her. Slowly she moved from the edge of the bed and picked up the bowl, walking around to the other side and resetting up there.

“You know, I would love for all your brothers to say that,” she pointed out calmly about not being wanted. The cloth was dipped into the cool water again and she reached out to once again press it to his head, this time daring to bring it over his cheeks. “But I fear I am wanted, and at this moment, by Josef’s orders I am to be with you.” It was said all in a conversational tone, the female also knowing it would be good to wipe down his chest as well, though that was not a battle she thought wise to try and start fighting yet. First was the medicine.

Hearing the door, Zephyra stood, walking over to take the medicine from the servant whose gaze darted towards Solomon before they dismissed themselves. As soon as the door closed, she stepped back over to the bed, easing herself to the edge with what was luckily a mug this time around. “It seems they are still preparing the medicine, but they brought some water. It should help your throat feel better and perhaps even calm the headache I am sure you have.” No, what she held was most certainly medicine, but she was holding to the hope that his parched throat would be willing to accept water, and with any luck, he would be desperate enough to just chug it with some help. The after tasted would give it away but... at least it would be down. IF he drank it. At this point, she had a feeling the only way to succeed was to outsmart him.

Holding the cup in one hand, she cautiously reached out to offer some support if he wanted to lift himself on one arm to take it. “If you take it down, I will be sure that you are allowed to rest and we can forget about the medicine,” she offered. Yes, the medicine could be forgotten because he already took it... IF he took it. The if was what everything depended on. And with any luck it would knock him out enough for her to give him a cooler washdown along his chest and torso. “At least it would be a small relief m’lord,” she reminded, holding the cup out for him, prepared for him to try and take it or have her put it to his lips.

Solomon sighed as she moved to the other side, not giving up just yet. Of course, he couldn’t just be left alone. They had to send her. She might have not been much of a nuisance thus far, but she was quite possibly the last person he wanted to see. And now she wasn’t just sitting on the couch quietly. She was in his space and touching him. Solomon shot a deadly glare at her as the cloth touched him again, recoiling. Well, as far as he could recoil while curled up into a ball. “Well, unfortunately,” He growled, “My brothers seem to be obsessed with you.”

Solomon allowed the cloth to rest on his head, only because what little energy he had was going into being annoyed with her. “And Josef is just being dramatic. He feels some need to take care of me.” He huffed with his raspy voice, coughing again, which caused pain in his throat and chest. How grand this all was… Perhaps becoming Hades would have been a better option than what he was currently feeling. “Which is unnecessary.” He added. Solomon despised being home… if he was out on the field, he would have just been left alone. There wouldn’t be some woman, who happened to be the palace whore, in charge of taking care of him.

Of course, anyone else could easily tell that some assistance was necessary, but Solomon was far too prideful. Not to mention he didn’t feel comfortable with someone in his space and she was in his space, touching and attempting to care for him. He didn’t like that. She had always been respectful of his space, he figured this was just a cheap tactic to get away from his brothers for a bit, judging by her comment. No wonder she agreed. It was a way to get some semi-alone time, but the price was the prince’s to pay. Another downfall to his entire sick experience.

So, the man figured she would be rather difficult to scare off, which was a challenge he didn’t really want to undertake. She wanted some temporary freedom, Solomon wanted to be left alone and while he was in this state, she was willing to defy his demands to leave and use Josef as an excuse. He should’ve made sure some of the medication got into his sibling's mouth. He was going to kill Josef for this as soon as he had the strength to walk. Eyes darted in the direction of the door as a knock sounded, growing semi-alert as he knew he was going to have to fight her about the dose.

He eyes the mug she brought over, saying they had brought him water instead. As thirsty as the man was, he had quickly discovered it was painful to swallow anything. It felt like his insides were grating against each other whenever he tried to get something down. Not to mention the vomiting… Heavens he was a mess… Solomon let out a soft sigh, only because it was all getting to the point where even he couldn’t stand it. The shivering, the tight chest, the sore throat, and whatever other awful symptoms he had were bordering overwhelming.

But, the offer of being left alone in exchange for the water was a tempting one. She would probably go over to the couch, he could continue to writhe in his discomfort. It wasn’t particularly beneficial, but it meant he would have some peace and quiet. His eyes narrowed as if he were going to refuse, but he let out a huff of defeat. He wheezed as he managed to prop himself up on an elbow, just enough so that he wouldn’t spill everywhere. His body seemed to tremble at the effort. Or maybe it was just the shivers. Whatever the case, even such a small movement took a lot out of him.

Solomon reached for it with shaky hands, sliding his fingers through the handle. “Fine, I drink the water, you leave me alone.” He agreed, trying to stabilize his hand enough so he could drink, “Which means you go over there and stay away. I don’t like people nor do I appreciate them near me. You are not excluded in that.” The man found enough balance to bring the cup to his lips, tipping it carefully back so as to not spill it. He didn’t quite trust himself with it, but he would be damned if he asked her to help him drink it. But as soon as the liquid ended up in his mouth, he knew it wasn’t water. It tasted worse than bile and it was clear he hadn’t expected it.

So he spit it out.

Everywhere.

The disgusting sludge spewed from his mouth and the man gagged audibly, his body bending over the bin next to his bed as he choked, nearly dry heaving into it. He proceeded to hack, his body not appreciating his reaction. His chest constricted and he was quickly out of breath, gasping for air while coughing loudly. “What… the HELL?!” Solomon exclaimed though it wasn’t as loud as it would’ve been with his raspy voice. Fingers gripped the edge of his bed as he heaved himself back up given as he wasn’t going to vomit. The look he wore was pure murder.

Except, when his eyes raised, he realized that “everywhere” had been mostly on Zephyra. He was horrified, to say the least, and had even been about to offer her a change of clothes… when he remembered. She had lied to him. It had been a clever attempt, but now he was just angry. “You would be dead if I wasn’t like this,” Solomon snarled, which was by far one of his most aggressive displays towards her since the beginning, “Know your place, peasant, and do not attempt to defy me again.” His last words came out as just as threatening, but his eyes were tired and… perhaps even vulnerable.

But he was too tired to continue talking. With a shaky inhale, he let himself fall against the bed once more. Just like that, he was back to being a sickly, trembling bundle, his fury dissipating because he was too weak to care. To think the general that had conquered nations was reduced to this. Solomon’s mouth parted to tell her to leave once more, suddenly feeling embarrassed at how fragile he seemed, but said nothing. The man only rolled over to have his back faced her, his body curling itself even tighter as an unconscious move to both hide and defend himself.

For the briefest time, just the briefest time Zephyra thought that just maybe her plan had worked and she would be able to get by the whole experience rather smoothly. The prince was managing to prop himself, though the movement was rather shaky and he seemed a bit precarious. But the woman allowed him the satisfaction of doing it on his own, nodding as he reached for the mug. “Of course, m’lord,” she agreed, keeping one hand ready to stabilize the mug if necessary. She could safely agree and still work with him if he drank it because he said water. At least that was the logic she was trying to work off of.

He got the mug to his mouth and started to drink. And that was when everything went wrong. She had hoped he would gulp it down and then realize... but that by no means was the case. Medicine was spewed everywhere, or more notable, all over Zephyra, covering her clothes and her. It wouldn’t have been so bad except even her more modest clothes should skin which meant she had spit even on her pale skin, sticky and disgusting in every way possible.

Her own reaction was to recoil slightly, though she quickly moved to save the mug that had been dropped, spilling what little was left on the bottom sheet. Not that he hadn’t managed to get a bunch all over the his sheet as well. Her hands were sticky from the cup as she moved it to the bedside table, hazel eyes darting to the man to make sure he wasn’t dying. His exclamation was to be expected but the murderous glare set on her was unsettling and instinct caused her to scoot off the edge of the bed and out of arm’s reach.

Nor had she expected what he croaked out next, for a moment fear flashing through her gaze before settling back again. His aggression seemed genuine and part of her stunned feelings and fear came from a mix of things. First, the fact that she had never seen Solomon actually become like this. He never treated her as an equal, but he had never before threatened her in such a manner or threw in her face her standing. Secondly, it was a painful reminder of Heinrey and the man’s cruel ways. But the woman was resilient and determined, thrusting the fear to the back of her mind. There was nothing Solomon could do at the moment anyway, and deep down, she wanted to help him. Why? There was no clear explanation considering if the man didn’t make it, which was unlikely, but if he didn’t, she had confidence she could find a stronger hold in Josef’s favor.

Sighing, she walked over to the rope that called the servant and pulled it twice before looking at the bundled version of the sickly Solomon. Zephyra needed a new plan and knew that trickery wasn’t going to work now. So what would? At this point, anything could set him off. Nothing was said as she waited for the servant, her mind kicking into gear once again, her eyes closing as she tried to think through this all. What would she have done before this? If she had been herself?

Hazel eyes snapped open about the time the knock came to the door and she strode over with some confidence, opening it. “I’m afraid the medicine was accidently spilled. If I could request one more cup please, and if it would not be too much trouble, a pair of servants garments as well.” There was a nod and the servant left, leaving Zephyra alone with Solomon once more. The whole room smelled of medicine and she knew it must be rather unpleasant for him, especially considering he had effectively coated his sheets in it as well.

Making a quick stop at the bathroom, she washed her hands and arms before moving to the wardrobe, the woman retrieving a fresh sheet from inside. Taking the bundle, she carried it over to the couch and laid it down. The woman made no attempt at talking as she once more retrieved the basin with water, bringing that away to empty the water and fill it with fresh, setting it back where it was with a cloth inside. Still, she did not attempt to touch Solomon or disturb him in any way.

As there was another knock, Zeph answered it, thanking the servant as more medicine was handed to her along with folded clothes. Bringing the medicine with her to ensure the prince did not attempt to spill it to spite her if she left it unsupervised, she once again entered the bathroom, this time shutting the door. Despite being covered, the woman made fast work of shedding the ruined clothes and cleaning any medicine off her skin before changing into the modest and covering shirt and servant’s skirt. It felt amazing to wear something... normal. But there was no time to dwell on that as she quickly tied her hair up into a bun and exited again.

Stepping up to the bed, she reached out and grabbed the end of the sheet and without a word yanked it out of his grasp and off his body. Was this smart? Well, arguably yes and no. But the fact that he couldn’t even hold onto it gave her decent faith that he wouldn’t barrel out of the bed and murder her. “Now m’lord, I have a clean sheet for you... one that I will gladly give on one condition.” Her voice was calm, in these moments the Zephyra from a year before shining through as she rolled up the dirty sticky cover and placed it in the corner. She made her way to the couch to grab the clean one, walking to where he was facing to display the fresh one. “You take your medicine and you will have your sheet.”

It was placed down well out of reach as she grabbed the cup and made her way closer, though kept even the medicine from his reach. “And before you decide to once again coat me in your medicine, I must warn you that your empire has long since torn my dignity from me and I will take off everything covered in medicine and continue to try and help you.” Any of the other brothers would have immediately tried to dump the disgusting liquid on her, but she knew better with Solomon.

Finally she eased to sit on the edge of the bed and offer the cup to him once again. Her expression had gentled quite a bit as she stretched it out for him. “If you would just take it m’lord, you would start to get better and this would be much easier. What does it hurt for you to accept some help? If I truly wished, we both know Josef would accept my return, but I wish to assist you.” The hope was this would end up better than last time...

He heard her walk across the room, highly in tune to her movements as he struggled not to fall asleep. Solomon found that he was constantly exhausted. He could write novels on how horrible his sick experience was and complain about it for eons. But all that came from him was silence and the occasional shaky exhale, the man never, and certainly not right now, the talkative type. She summoned the servant and the two talked for a short period of time, but that was all the noise that came from the room. Soon the servant returned, no doubt with more medicine.

Was it too much to ask to be left alone? He was a prince for heaven's sake, why couldn’t some respect be shown? And of course, the whore had a sudden rebellious streak, deciding to act as if she had any right to him or his space. Just what he needed, a peasant acting as if they were his equal. His eyes cracked open as she meandered around again, noticing the change of clothes and the sheets. He could feel the medicine on the sheet against his bare back but made no comment. It was petty and childish, but he didn’t want to accept anything she offered him. He was still bitter about the medication.

And any ill will he had magnified tenfold as the sheet was snatched from him, a loud snarl escaping him. Eyes narrowed dangerously as he was exposed, his weakness taken advantage of. Not to mention he was shirtless, his scarred body left on display in a way that frazzled him. Sometimes he was completely comfortable with himself, other times he was self-conscious. This was a time when he was self-conscious. Not to mention he was freezing. His weak fingers dug into the sheet that covered his mattress, searching for something to replace what she had stolen.

Of course, there was nothing to grab, as his bed had been stripped down due to the fever. Solomon’s glare was cold as she laid out her deal. The medication for the sheet. It would have been a good idea if he wasn’t furious. Any anger that had died had returned and the man would have combusted if it were possible. How dare she? She wasn’t his mother nor was she his wife. She was a prisoner used for amusement. A plaything who had no worth. She had no right to strike deals or tell him what he could or couldn’t have. Not when she stood lower than the lowest in their society.

Every word she spoke only served to worsen the situation, followed by a show of fake genuity. If only he were that gullible. “You are a fool if you believe the prospect of disrobing would prevent me from spitting out that vile fluid again if I was forced to drink it. Anything you choose to do will only further dig your own grave.” Solomon spoke, his disgust evident. The man looked at her quite like he had the first day she arrived, with hatred and disdain. He was going to geld Josef for this… As for Zephyra, he wasn’t quite sure what he would do yet. He could barely pick through the bloodlust at the moment.

“You may find it easy to take advantage of me now, but you forget that I won’t be like this forever. Feel free to forget where you stand now, but once I am better there will be consequences. Keep that in mind as you continue to play these ridiculous games with me.” It was clear that he was beyond displeased, every word as malicious as they could be. They were frightening even despite the fact he was sick, for his threats were vindictive promises of future punishment. When Solomon was angry he was not one to be trifled with. He was not very sparing when it came to issuing consequences.

“I do not accept help I do not need, Zephyra, and you are not needed. You are simply a last resort used to make my brother feed better and fed his own ego by making him believe he is helping me.” Solomon snapped, though it was followed by another round of coughing. None of this was helping with his condition whatsoever. “And I don’t give a damn if you want to assist me or not, because whatever moral satisfaction you achieve from this means nothing to me. You have done nothing but stress me. It would behoove you to realize that your “help” is proving to be nothing but a burden on a man who just wants to be left alone.”

With a parting glare, the man turned away from her again. Looking at her would only prove to infuriate him when all he needed was to calm down. Reaching up, he tugged one of his many large pillows to his chest, throwing a leg over it as it covered his front, giving him some sense of security. It wasn’t a blanket, but it would do for now, as he would be damned if he gave in to her. He buried his face into the dark pillowcase, eyes squeezing shut as the pounding in his head came back. All he could do now was pray that she would leave so he could have some semblance of a peaceful environment.
