Neamh || 3 || Herd Mare || M: Nysa, River

One moment ago, the sun had been scorching the earth and Neamh's back. Now, she couldn't see her own shadow. The cracked ground beneath her hissed and dust began to swirl around her hooves. What-?

The young mare turned and a shudder ran through her whole body at the sight of the violent clouds gathering in the near distance. A dust storm? Now? But there was no shelter; where would they go? Neamh's dark eyes searched the horses around her, all of which seemed to be growing uneasy and skittish. Obviously, and who could blame them?

Certainly not the tobiano. Her heart had already skipped one, two, three beats. She burst into a quick trot and made her way to the other horses. The winds picked up, throwing dust in her eyes and causing her to blink rapidly. She shook out her body and pressed herself against the nearest form, still on the fringes of the herd. Through watery pools, she squinted at the shape -- Nysa?

Augh, her eyes stung. She had the sinking feeling that one of the dust particles still in her eye may have cut it slightly. Neamh turned her back to the winds and grimaced as a larger spray of dirt smacked her painfully in the rump and legs. She stumbled forward with a grunt and forced her eyelids open.

"Nysa, I'm just going to stay by you," she rasped, choking on the dust that entered as she drew in a breath. She knew the other was less sociable, and she understood that, but this was a life and death situation. She'd have pressed herself against Atolos himself if he'd been near, and he would probably be more danger to her than the storm.

Morrigan

4 Years Old | Mare | Herd Mare | M: Kano, Anil, Ascenath, Rastus, Macha[ind.], Lorcan[ind.]

The female had to suppress a mocking laugh at the sight of him grimacing at her mentioning fecal matter. It was quite humorous. He didn't seem that bad, but something in her was setting off warning bells about his behavior. She kept that to herself, and just quietly observed him. At the sound of a loud whinny she lifted her head up and looked to the herd. It appeared her father had finally made a decision on where they would be headed. Finally, she thought delighted, hopefully we'll find water wherever we go.

"Well, that's my sign to leave. " she said looking at him a bit curious to see his reation, but soon something in the distance caught her eyes. And then the sounds of distress from her herdmates. She ignored it momentarily, and then heard the stallion say he was taking his leave. She chuckled and watched as he made his graceful exit, and then rolling her eyes as she turned to leave.

The mare was met with the face of Anil and inwardly she cursed. She noted his harsh glare and words. Her own icy glare came to her face saying, " Well, I told him off but he kept pestering me. And then he asked about a coyote wound on his leg. All I did was offer some helpful tips on how to deal with it and told him to be about his way. Of course, next time I'll inform you about his precense."

She watched Anil, and then saw as he made his way to other stragglers. But then he heard a commanding tone in his voice, but something was off. It was a shift in the wind, and sudden darkening of the sky that concearned her. And then she turned her head to find the source of the disturbance.

It was large, billowing clouds coming straight towards them. They were moving swiftly across the area, and she frowned. Rainclouds? she thought, but she squinted her eyes. No, the clouds weren't stormy gray or white like snow. They looked dirty, vile and grungy. Dust clouds? She's experience possibly one dust storm in her life time, but this one looked more dangerous.

She flattened her ears to her skull, and she extended her forearms and used her hocks to spring her forward. Her tail was whipping behind her as she cantered back towards the heard. The first person she noticed was Rastus yelling about the dust storm.

No shit, Rastus, Morrigan inwardly thought.

However, her eye caught her sister being approached by him, and she veered towards their direction. And slowing her pace she looked at Rastus who appeared to be shielding her sister. Morrigan extened her neck, and craned her head to see if she could spot Lorcan in this, but it was to no avail. She'd stay here with her sister for now.

She gave her sister a silent greeting, not sure of her mood at the moment, but was confident Asenath would understand her.

Macha | < 3 Yrs | Yearling | M: Anil

The young filly was uncomfortable and scared. Her eyes were wide with panic, and her ears were pinned. There was a certain bounce in her step as if she were prone to bolt at any second. She felt the instinct to run, get away from this storm and hide. However, she knew that would be foolish and dangerous. What to do, what to do?

The mare then heard a familiar voice. Do not panic, it spoke.

And she looked to see the form of her father, and a breath of relief escaped her. And her eyes that were once panicked were now calm and motivated. She could hear the caring in his tone, and she was greatful for it. Macha, the young appaloosa drew closer to her father, and could in a way say pressed her body against him for stability and comfort.

She was with her father. He had come for her, he was her hero. And then she wondered if Nysa was alright. Had she been found? These thoughts flooded her mind, and then she squinted her eyes trying to see her father. She then tried to yell over the storm, but with the howling wind her words were probably muffled.

"DAD," the mare shouted, "I'm sorry from being away from the herd! I was trying to get Nysa to come back before she got into trouble, because I didn't want you and Atolos to be stressed. Did you find her?" in her voice was concearn, and the once panicking tone was gone.

She didn't care if the dust was stinging her eyes, or making her voice raspy because she spoke. She needed to know. Had her foolish mistake of leaving Nysa alone gotten the older mare harmed?

Adira

Mare || 8.5 years || Deputy Mare || M: Bia, Atolos, Aine

[ind.] Anil and Asteria

Adira raised her head to acknowledge Atolos as he approached, leaving Anil to walk over towards her and his daughter, “Atolos,” she greeted in return, lowering her head to nudge Bia, “Look whos here,” she spoke, but the little foal had already noticed here father approaching. "Papa!" she cried, jumping up and stumbling over towards him. It was a sweet sight, seeing Bia so happy at the touch of her father as the lead stallion nuzzled her before bringing her back over to Adira’s side. "I'm moving the herd, try to keep Bia in the center, it'll keep her protected and in the shadows of the other horses so she won't get so hot," he spoke.

“Of course,” she agreed, glancing down towards the young foal at her side. She had grown quite protective of Bia and had treated her like her own foal. Which wasn't hard to do because she had been there when she was born and would watch over her when Sunna could not. Her safety meant everything to Adira, so she was willing to do whatever Atolos came up with to keep her safe. The lead stallion spoke of going towards the mountains and no sign of water ahead on the path that they were traveling. It did initially disappoint her, since the herd was in desperate need of water, especially the younger foals like Bia, and there was a bit of a risk, but then she grew more relaxed at the thought of possibly finding water at the base of the mountain, or even on the way. “Thank you for telling me,” Adira nodded, thankful when Atolos offered her a break. She would try not to use it of course, but she was glad he offered it if she did need it. The deputy wanted to stay with Bia as much as she could, she didn't want the foal to feel as if she was just being passed around the herd now that her mother was gone.

The lead stallion let out a whinny to signal to the herd that they were moving and then giving vocal confirmation. Adira started at a slow pace towards the center of the herd, making sure Bia was at her side the entire time. She hoped the foal would be able to keep up with the herd, she was still young and even if she had energy now, the constant sun beating down on her might drain it. The sun wasn't directly over them yet, so she was able to offer some shade as the filly walked beside her. She glanced around her to see some of the other herd members making their way over, though they seemed hurried.

Narrowing her eyes Adira looked past them, clouds were rolling over the landscape, it wasn't normal. They crawled unnaturally over the ground and the winds began to pick up, the deputy quickly nudged Bia closer to the herd, it was a dust storm. "Back to the herd!" she heard faintly, coming from Anil who was trying to call some of the stragglers together. “Bia, stick by my side,” she told the foal, pressing herself against the little filly as she arrived closer to the largest section of the herd. She ended up standing near Aine and her foal Asteria, maybe it would be a comfort to have another friend nearby.

Fear surged through the mare as the storm was now feet away, she was determined to put on a brave face for the sake of the foal at her side, it wouldn't be good to have her panicking when it hit, she might decide to try and flee. The deputy used her body as a shield when the dust clouds reached them. The wind howled in her ears as she pressed against the foal at her side, but suddenly the pressure was released, “Bia!” the mare whinnied, frantically moving around to try and find the missing filly, and bumping into another horse. “Aine?” she guessed, sand-filled her mouth and Adira did all she could to get it out, “Bia’s gone!”

Áine
Mare | 11 Years Old | Herd Mare | M: Asteria, Adira, Sylph & Cadhla

The older mare listened to Cadhla as she mentioned them talking about mountains. Áine gave a thoughtful gaze at the thought of it. There was a time when she lived near the mountains, and sometimes on them. She remembered how peaceful it was, the crisp mountain air, the green vegetation, and not to mention the blankets of snow. Even the clouds seemed more gleeful in the mountains. They were always white like the snow and thin and whispy indicating good weather or large and fluffy.

"I'd say the mountains would be a good decision. The water during the spring, summer, and fall seasons would always be pure and fresh. Not to mention the meadows and wild life." she said thinking about the pros of the mountains, "I would say that the only deterance would be the winter season when the water is undrinkable as it's icy cold or it's frozen over. Not to mention their can be avalances or blizzards."

The painted mare would've went on, but a small voice caught her attention. The sound of her daughter, and the mare softened her face at the sight of the young creature. Asteria, looked very much like her mother with a lovely painted coat. Áine watched as her daughter greeted the other mares with proper manners, and she felt a small amount of pride that her young daughter did such a thing. And then her ears perked at the mention of her asking a question.

"Sure darling, what's the question? Is it about the sounds from last night?" Áine said gently.

Áine had already began to explain to her daughter about death in small doses. After all the child's father had died, and questions about her father came sooner than she expected, but this was a conversation Áine had with all her children. So she was experienced in telling them about the subject. Before, Áine could hear the young foal ask the question, the sound of Atolos whinniying caught her attention. She raised her head, and gave a soft smile at Cadhla mentioning that they were moving.

"Looks like I'll have to answer your question at our next stop." Áine said to Asteria chuckling softly.

At the sound of Caldha, she said, "No, I haven't seen her, but I'm sure she's alright." Áine said in a calm tone. She understood the protectiveness as she herself would raise hell and move a mountain for Asteria. Then the sounds of distress rippled through the heard. And in a second, her vision was ingulfed by the storm. She couldn't make out the form of her daughter.

"Asteria." she called, and perking her ears for a response. Dread began to well within her body, "Asteria!" she called again, her voice losing compsure. She was moving in the storm, which she shouldn't do. But she needed to find her daughter. If anything happened to that foal, Áine quite frankly, wouldn't forgive herself.

However, instead of finding her daughter she was met with the form of Adira. Bia was missing?

"Asteria is missing as well. Stick close to me, until the storm blows over, and we'll find them. I'm sure an experienced mare will find them. They'll be alright."Áine said trying to comfort the younger mare.

And she pressed her body against Adira for comfort and support.

Ouranos || 4 || Herd Stallion || M: River, Inessa, Sylph, Cadhla

The pale stallion turned his head as the warm breeze began to come in violent spurts. What in the world? His eyes caught on to the darkening sky and he couldn't help but release a groan full of resigned annoyance. He pushed his flank against his mother's and nosed River gently towards the dappled gray mare's body.

"This can't be good," he grumbled. The dark brown clouds gradually came closer until Ouranos could no longer see more than ten feet in front of him. Small rocks and dirt chips snapped against his body and dust filled his eyes, nostrils, and ears. He lowered his head and released a violent cross between a cough and a sneeze. An extra strong gust sent him stumbling on already weak legs, and he lost contact with Inessa and River.

It took him a moment to realize such, but when he did, panic began to set in. With a sharp inhale, he called, "River! Inessa!"

The wind took up his cry and sucked it into the void, engulfing his words in its own howls. The stallion staggered forward, trying to retrace his steps, and eventually planted face-first into someone's rear. Through the dirt clouding his senses, he was fairly certain he'd run into Cadhla. With a loud apology, he nearly backed up, but then thought better of it and just moved alongside the older mare.

"Who else is here?" he shouted above the screaming blizzard of sand. "River? Inessa?"

Ouranos squeezed his eyes shut and inhaled. He could smell the other horses, but their scents were quickly fading. River and his mother were not among them. All he could hope for was their having stayed together. Hopefully, he'd find them after this had passed. If he lived, anyway.

Nysa

Mare || 5 years || Herd mare || M: Macha, Neamh

Nysa was following the spotted yearling back towards the herd, “It didn’t seem like you meant any harm,” she nodded, head dipping slightly as a strong wind started to pick up. "See, now you won't have to worry about getting into trouble. Now I have to go find my mother before she starts worrying about me."

All Nysa could do was nod and watch as the younger horse walk off towards her mother. A stronger wind gust battered her side and she turned to face it head-on. Shock and fear flashed over her face as thick brown clouds rolled over the land before her, as quick as she had spotted it, Nysa was engulfed in the clouds.

She struggled to find someone, anyone near her, and eventually, a figure pressed themselves against her. Had she found the herd? Her eyes stung as sand pelted her and she squinted to see who had found her. She could hardly make out who it was but could hear their voice over the howling winds. "Nysa, I'm just going to stay by you,"

The voice was familiar and she immediately went through all the possible candidates before settling on a younger herd mare, “Neamh?” she rasped, hoping her voice was loud enough to be heard over the wind. All she could do now was close her eyes and hope for it to be over, “I’m here!” she neighed, shuffling to stand closer to the other mare and lowering her head, using Neamh side to block some of the wind and sand, and trying to do so for her as well. “Where is the herd?” she gasped, sand crawling into her mouth.

Nysa had to urge to stand up and run, maybe in her panic she would find them, but she couldn’t leave Neamh behind now, what if the younger mare couldn’t follow her? Or find the herd? She could end up hurt, or killed and it would be Nysa’s fault for abandoning her. Her hooves itched to run but she stayed and would wait out the storm from here.

(short ;-;)

Naga || 8 || Herd Mare || M: Keanu, Others (Ind)

As the dust began to swirl, Naga set her jaw and began nosing her son into the middle of the main body of the herd. She'd seen a few dust storms in her lifetime, though none as severe as the current one promised to be. Her white mane and tail lashed against her black body, and she shifted to cover her colt from what she hoped was the worst of it.

"I want you to bite my tail and try your best not to let go, okay?" she told him, squinting as the winds picked up. "I don't want you to get lost in the storm."

Naga kept her voice as soothing and calm as possible, though her body was tense with worry. She couldn't lose Keanu, not now. Not after they'd made it this far. She'd already lost one son, in a way; there was no room left in her for another loss. The mare lipped the bay colt's mane and gently tugged.

"It'll be okay, Keanu."

She would make sure of it.

Naga pushed into the nearest horse's side, unable to tell who exactly it was, but she was fairly certain they were near the center of the largest group. She could hear the panicked cries of others drawing farther and farther away, but she herself refused to budge. No point in asking to get lost.

Anil
Stallion | 10 Years | Lieutenant | Mentions: Macha, Adira, Aine

The howling wind took the priority in the stallion's mind, but he still had half a brain to listen to his daughters words. "I saw her a little closer to the herd than we are currently," he said, ducking his head to press his words against the appaloosa's ear, voice forever baritone and on the quieter side. "I believe I saw her heading towards Neamh, so she isn't alone." He understood the young mare's concern, understood that she had been trying to help Atolos and himself.

"For now, focus on us, and on surviving," he said gently, lifting his head and having his eyes open a tiny amount to try and keep the dust out whilst looking at their surroundings. Slowly, the large stallion positioned himself to be between his daughter and the gusts of dust and dirt, using his larger frame to block as much of it from hitting her as he could. Just as he'd said to Naga, he loved his children, he truly did. He cared for them more than life itself, would give his own life in a heartbeat for them.

In the distance, he saw what looked like figures. He couldn't tell who they were, only that they weren't Atolos, given the stallions gigantic size. Likely some of the mares in the herd. He couldn't even tell how many there were, their forms simply being dark blobs in his limited vision.

"Follow me, Macha," he said, once again ducking his head towards her face, taking a slow step forward, giving the filly ample time to keep up with him and contiue using him as a shield. He knew that his steps were likely longer than hers regardless of how slow he took them, but used the slow pace to move towards the figures.

He'd told his children when they were foals never to move when they were alone in a dust storm, but with his daughter alongside him, he could make an exception. If the herd got split, he needed to be with as many of the others as he could, whilst the others should be with Atolos. He, Atolos and Adira were the only ones who knew where the herd was going, and he and Atolos were the protectors of the herd. If it split, he needed to be with as many as possible to continue his duty of protecting them.

His lean chest bumped into the top of one of the mares flank, and he snorted, dropping his head to inhale the scent of who it was. Adira. The Deputy Mare, carer of... carer Bia. Where was Bia? The filly might not have been biologically related to him, but she was practically his niece with how close he and Atolos were. He'd had a crucial role in raising not only his own children, but the children of his lifelong friend.

"Adira," he grunted, swinging his head around to his daughter. "Macha, stand beside Adira. I will not be leaving," he said, gently pushing the young mare to stand beside the Deputy. Then, he reached out towards the other mare standing with the chestnut. "Aine," he said, touching his nose to her flank. He hated physical contact at the best of times, but these were special circumstances. Life or death.

He positioned himself as a wind-break for the three mares as best he could, putting his body between them and where he could feel the dust coming from. Moving all four of them would be too difficult whilst the storm was still happening, he wouldn't be able to connect with other members of the herd until it went away.

Cadhla
Mare || Nine || Herd Mare || Mentions: Sylph, Asteria, Áine, Ouranos
Indirectly Mentions: Macha, Anil

The spotted mare took long strides towards Atolos, her heart soaring at the idea of moving. While the valley provided the herd with good resources and memories, it was time. To stay would mean death and sickness, something that Cadhla had seen enough of.

A gentle breeze ruffled her mane. Closing her eyes, the mare lifted her head, enjoying the slightly coolness of it, that is, until it suddenly picked up. The gentle look upon Cadhla's face vanished, and her eyes snapped open in confusion as her mane now began to twirl around in the wind. "Do you see this?" She asked Sylph, motioning upwards to her mane dancing around. Staring at her friend, she saw her look at something. Slowly, Cadhla turned her head, only then noticing the cloud. Immediately, she knew that it was no normal cloud.

"Good grief.." She uttered. Did the herd not have enough hardship? Had they not suffered enough? It was bad thing after bad thing. The heat, then the drought, then death, then the foal, and now this? Now, a dust storm? A pang of anger formed within Cadhla, but what was she to do about it?

Her ears turned to Sylph, who had called her name. It sounded questioning, and for once, the mare herself was speechless. "Running won't help us," she sighed, staring directly at the storm. Pondering, her own instincts told her to run, which was exactly why Cadhla didn't listen. That, and common sense. "We can't outrun it." Snapping her gaze away from the storm, she turned to her surroundings, glancing around. "We need to hide behind something. It'll help shield the storm from us." Where were they to hide? It was a valley. "No, no, we should stay with the herd. We can't split up from them." Cadhla glanced back to the herd, noticing some breaking off into groups and others beginning to panic.

Where was Macha?

"I need to find my daughter." Craning her neck, Cadhla felt fear form within her. She couldn't find Macha, couldn't even hear her. Where was she? "Macha?" She called, eyes widening. Where was her daughter? Had she found Anil? Yes, maybe her father had found her. Oh, but what if he didn't? What if she was alone? What if she was scared and alone? Turning to Áine, she paused when her other friend was no longer near, nor was Asteria. When had they left?

Pressing herself against Sylph, Cadhla continued to search with her eyes for Macha, but it was too late. The storm was here, and within moments, her sight had been restricted. All she could do was pray that her daughter was safe while she pressed herself farther into Sylph. At least she had her friend alongside of her and wasn't truly alone.

She could make out Sylph's figure, but nothing in front nor behind. Cadhla's first thought was to remain put, but the dust swirling around had begun to block her nostril, causing her to begin a series of snorts and sneezes while her eyes narrowed. Small pieces of debris flung against her body. It was clear that they couldn't stay where they were. "We need shelter. We can't find the herd in this," she practically yelled over the wind, beginning to take a step forwards.

A sudden force caused Cadhla to stumble forwards, practically landing face-first on the ground. Head turning behind her, she first believed a log had hit her, or a branch of sorts, but it was none other than Ouranos. Relief flooded her at having another individual near, not remotely caring that he had nearly caused her to fall over.

She could hear him saying something, and although it was difficult to hear, she managed to make out a few words. He was asking who was near, and then asking for a river? No, no, he was asking for River and.. Inessa? "It's just myself and Sylph," she shouted back, "No River or Inessa." Pausing, she turned to Ouranos once more. "Have you seen Macha?" She shouted. Maybe he saw that she wasn't alone. She needed some relief. Before letting him answer, she relesed a huff when a branch smacked her side.

"Shelter," she added on, speaking to Ouranos. "We need to walk. Stick close together." Motioning for Sylph to remain in the middle of her and Ouranos, Cadhla pressed her body against Sylph, expecting Ouranos to do the same on the other side. It was be difficult to navigate without sight, and they needed to make sure not to lose one another. "We're going to move. Look for something to hide behind." Cadhla would keep mental notes of how far they would move, and try to remember which direction they had come from. All she needed Sylph and Ouranos to do was try not to be separated, and to try and find shelter.
