Cadhla
Mare || Nine || Herd Mare || Mentions: Sylph

Even the breeze was warm.

The brown spotted mare sauntered around in a hurry, as if she had some secret destination to get to. She didn't. Cadhla was simply bored and felt the need to stretch her legs before she went mad. When she found herself standing alone in silence for too long, her mind began to wander to the drought, then to Sunna, then to all the deaths that had been witnessed. It was a dark place, one that Cadhla didn't wish to remain in.

It was either that, or she would begin to think about food, and that didn't help her current hunger.

Trotting, the appaloosa kicked up small flecks of dirt behind her, weaving past horses and hopping over branches. Some may think that she had finally lost it the way she was moving in the growing heat, but Cadhla didn't mind it very much, especially since she was suddenly preoccupied with a new quest.

Having spotted a familiar bay coat among the herd, she changed her route abruptly. "Sylph," she called, skipping up to the smaller mare. Sylph was a member of the herd who Cadhla was rather fond of. Her kindness and peacefulness was something that was respected. Indeed, Cadhla adored Sylph and her personality. They were similar in certain ways.

Having approached, Cadhla offered the opposite mare a gentle nudge with her nose in a greeting before stepping back. "How are you?" Pausing, she shook out her mane lightly before glancing around the surrounding area. "Did you get much sleep last night?" Cadhla knew that she didn't. Between the hunger and sounds of coyotes, there was little room to slumber. Her night was spent snapping awake to the sound of those creatures yipping away at having obtained some food.. A foal from the herd. The mere idea made Cadhla suppress a shudder. The poor thing..

Worry flashed in her eyes for a brief moment before her attention focused back onto Sylph, her tail swaying in attempt to fan herself.

Sylph
Mare | 5 Years | Herd Mare | Mentions: Cadhla

A bay coated mare stood within the herd, petite figure easily hidden by the statues of taller horses. Her coat was deep and rich, it's vibrancy dulling little even with the conditions around her. She looked like a little beacon of flame among all that barren landscape.

Sylph's ears flicked when her name was spoken by a familiar voice, her head lifting just in time to nudge the other mare in return. "Cadhla," she greeted, her voice soft as always, but not weak. Not yet. "I am alright, I think we could all be doing better though," she nodded with her head, knowing all of the herd wish they were back in rich, flourishing lands where all they had to worry about was which stream they were going to drink from.

"And you?" She asked, her tail flicking gently behind her as she shifted her weight to the side. The heat bothered the little mare only slightly, though it was always better when ample shade and water was available. But it was best not to dwell on that.

Her ears lifted at the mention of sleep and she frowned slightly, her eyes darkening as the memories of the night flooded through her. "I didn't sleep well last night, I couldn't with those... beasts screaming all through the night," she snorted, the slightest breath of hostility in the normally kind mare's words. "Did you manage to sleep?" She doubted anyone got any sleep, but Sylph always made polite conversation with Cadhla until the two inevitably either fell into deeper conversation or into a comfortable silence.

Deciding to be the first to ask, she stepped forward a bit. "What do you think the plan will be today? I heard whispers of a new direction," Sylph wasn't one for gossip, but she was a mare, it happens. She wanted to know her spotted friend's opinion on the matter too.

Rastus
Stallion || 5.5 || Herd Stallion || Mentions: Asenath, Sylph, Cadhla

Rastus stood upon a raised platform of land, his head held high and leg pointed in the air in an elegant manner. He was posing for an invisible audience, that much was clear, but that never stopped the stallion from looking his best, even in the midst of a drought.

Inhaling deeply, he shook his entire coat out, hooves tapping on the ground before moving forwards. His tail swayed calmly behind him and his mane bounced upon his head as he broke out into a slow trot, eyes looking around for somebody to converse with before pausing dead in his tracks.

Noting a spot of dirt upon his shoulder, Rastus frowned and trotted to a nearby tree, wiping it off with disgust before resuming his peaceful walk. Maintaining his coat was something that he made a habit to do. Now, he wouldn't call himself obsessive over it, he simply enjoys being clean. That, and showing off, but mainly being clean..

He was scouting around a few dozen meters away from the herd's main premises, only now returning to greet everybody. He wasn't gone for long, and yet he was expecting to be bombarded with an audience welcoming him back, so when he saw nobody rush over to him, a huff of disappointment was sounded. No matter, he would continue his trot, hoping to catch his father, Anil, sometime in the process.

Ah, but better yet, what graced his eyes was Asenath in the distance. Rastus was known to be rather annoying or obnoxious at times, perhaps even cocky, so it was no surprise that when he passed the mare, he offered a wink. "A sight for sore eyes," he spoke, attempting to butter her up before his eyes landed upon Sylph and Cadhla. "Er, do excuse me," he added on, now making his way towards them and ditching Asenath. What could he say? It was in his nature to be like this. "Ladies," he greeted, offering them a smile. "Sylph, you're positively glowing today, Cadhla, you as well." Getting comfortable, Rastus was about to converse before his eyes landed on more mares.

And just like that, Rastus sauntered away to his next victims like nothing.

Kage | 5 | Lone Mare | M: Open

Kage, a lone mare, stood stoically atop a miserable, flat boulder that laid in a field filled with nothing but dead grass and withering sagebrush as far as the eye could see. Even from afar, one could see the mare's black figure standing there, not moving an inch. A gentle breeze caressed Kage, causing her mane and tail to move along with the wind before it faded away into silence. However, the mare still did not move from where she stood staring off into the distance where what appeared to have once been a river laid, but there did not seem to be any water lingering in it from where the black-furred mare stood. Finally, Kage made a move, leaping down from the boulder that she'd been standing on and springing into a quick, bouncy trot, kicking up dust and small pebbles from the rocky terrain.

Even if they were half-blind, anybody could see Kage heading in the direction of the dried river from afar, since her purely black fur stuck out against the orange-ish color of the dry earth. Her trot was rather unsteady, with the emaciated mare stumbling and almost falling a few times, though, that was largely the terrain's fault. The rather small horse did not stop until she came to an abrupt stop a few feet away from where the river stood, no visible signs of life anywhere. In fact, from what Kage could pick up on, this seemed to be the place where many had taken their last breath. That was made clear as she walked into the river with caution.

"Ew," Kage muttered, her disgusted gaze falling apon the skull of an animal that lay by a small pool of brown, murky water. "There's no way that I can drink from that," Kage said to herself, walking past the puddle of water and the animal skull that was by it, causing the flies that were surrounding the bones to scatter. The mare had gained nothing from coming to this river which had most likely once been overflowing with clear, refreshing water and teeming with life. As the mare made her way across and eventually out of the river, she thought of what would happen to both herself and the herds of wild horses that lived around her area. Would they all be wiped out?

Kage shook her head, trying to get her mind off of all of those disturbing thoughts that swirled around in her brain. Right now, she had to focus on getting water and shade. Luckily for her, as soon as Kage climbed out of the river, her eyes fell apon a tree. It's bark was rough and had a likely chance of giving the mare a splinter if she rubbed on it, and it's leaves were draping due to the fact that it was dying, but regardless, it provided the mare with an opportunity to get out of the sun and rest for a bit. With a heavy sigh, Kage walked into the shade of the withering tree, hoping to find water so that she could make it through another day.

Amethyst

Stallion| Four years | Herd Stallion| Mentions:..,Inderect:Rastus, Asenath

Deep brown eyes gazed out past islands of trees, pitiful veins of grass stretched about the stumps and some trampled beneath his own hooves. He held little interest in digesting such pathetic vegetation, the taste would be bland, simulating the exact “flavor” he had in his mouth the night prior. Bitterness. A darling little foal, blissfully unaware to how its weakness would shape its fate, had been served to the coyotes the moment it’s legs buckled, straggling faithfully after the herd. He should have been mourning or atleast filled with dark disappointment, but all he could think about was “better him than me.” And right now he couldn’t feel more guilty.

With how his intense feelings brewed carelessly in his insides, forming unforgiving thunder clouds and bathed in foggy, gloomy wind, one would think he’d seem a bit more...present. Amethyst had an unmarked expression, one of neutral tranquility if not stony. He held his jaded gaze to the sky, intently watching as useless clouds filtered slowly through the dry air; unpromising pale tufts. The sun beat down on his back, for it had no leaves to struggle against and no shade to battle. He rested more so in the open, but still off to the side, out of the way of any wandering hooves. He liked it this way. Others were less likely to trot over and be a bother.

I wonder if she liked to watch the birds drift across the sky as much as I do. Reminiscent murmurings echoed about his mind, sparking a sharp twitch of the ear only seconds after. Er..He. Yes, he was a colt right? He let that soak in his brain for a moment. But then again.. A maddening insect, a fly would snap him from his thoughts, relentlessly jostling from ear to ear with a distracting racket of a buzz. For a heartbeat he’d study the winged pest, but with each shake at its attempt to perch on his nostrils, Amethyst would cave in with veiled irritation, quickly rocking to his hooves and strolling away from the pesky swarm; head lowered and ears swiveled to the side.

In the midst of his arrangement, he’d spy Rastus, a flamboyant stallion who peeved him from time to time, making his way over to Asenath; a mare who he tended to studiously observe here and there. Honestly, he couldn’t quite pin what exactly about the male bothered him, but the wavering dislike was still there every time his stare met that flank. When he finally found a sufficient, soothing zone, the muscular stallion would drop his rear roughly to the ground, glittering dust fluttering lazily around his shoulders before finally shrinking back to the confines of short, tasteless grass. Although no shadows from resident oaks swathed his darker coat, he remained untroubled despite the eating heat

Hungry for flesh and plants alike, the sun which he used to magnify had stolen the water, baking every drop in hopes of satisfying its greed with the fallen corpses as a result. Amethyst, with his hind legs slightly splayed to the side and his wiry front limbs planted steadily ahead, would toss his head back in a short chuff, mocking eyes momentarily meeting the lights blaze. Bad idea. He winced, the brief flash strong enough for a quick shift of gaze. Almost timidly, he’d slowly raise his head once again, wearily scanning his surroundings with a lump of dread ready to drop at any moment were he to meet eyes with another horse.

Releasing a puff of relief, the dark stallion would redirect his attention towards the clouds, though this time knowingly avoiding the sparks of sun taunting him in his peripheral. He’d begin to involuntarily recall yesterday's events, mainly the yips and cries of the coyotes as they enjoyed their feast, vocally expressing their pleased moods or even the testing anger as they fought over the most tender pieces of meat. He shivered, the thought of leaving the herd recoiling back with a fresh spring. There’ve been times where he’s carefully pondered about the bachelor lifestyle. Being free to do whatever you want, whenever you want. Looking only after yourself. --Commencing in bouts of challenges for mares.

The last part he didn’t care much about, but the first two… He’d allow his vision to retreat back towards the members of the herd, tail slapping against the ground thoughtfully. As...lovely? As they could be at times, he just couldn’t force a feeling other than selfishness every time the thought of risking himself nestled inside his mind. So perhaps being alone would suit him best...But if he’s a coward within the herd, he’ll still be one without it. His feelings won’t change, just the fact that he’ll be with a group if he were to face off a cougar. “Why can’t things just be simple.” He hadn’t spoken in a long while, his voice cracking due to lack of use, he’d clear it within seconds, slightly startled at the heavy rasp.

The occasional thought of allowing company had crossed his mind in the past too, but...for shorter words, he viewed the herd as something unvaried. Bland, colorless, they all appeared that way to him, some at least a little less than others, but still enough nonetheless. Someone like him shouldn’t have the mind to talk, seeing as how he might fit that description as well, but he can’t shake his high expectations. And although he never really seems to..care, he’d still like something engrossing in his life, something like the sky.

Naga || 8 || Herd Mare || M: Keanu, Others (Ind)

The dark mare moved silently through the herd, focusing her eyes on the horizon to prevent swaying steps. Her eyes were bloodshot and her body was caked in dust and dried mud, making her appear more of a flaxen chestnut. A dreary brown flaxen chestnut. Her ears twitched back and forth; the screeches of those forsaken creatures still echoed in her ears. She still didn't know whose foal had fallen victim. She didn't want to know.

She was a mother herself; Naga couldn't bear the thought of losing her own son. Keanu was still so little, but he was strong. He would make it. Speaking of Keanu, where had he run off to?

Momentary panic was replaced by resolve and slight irritation. Naga shook herself off until she resembled her natural coloration once more and picked up her pace to free the remaining dirt. It may have been a mistake. Her nearly black fur began to absorb the heat quicker than it had when she was dusty, though it trapped less of the disgusting warmth.

Now she would be covered in some odd mud made from sweat and dirt. She grimaced at the thought.

"Keanu," she called in a low voice. It had a tired drawl to it, but the mare made sure it was loud enough to reach the whole of the herd. If that colt hadn't stayed in the center like she'd told him to, so help her--

But Keanu was a good horse. He was stubborn and adventurous, yes, but what foal wasn't? Naga thought back regretfully to the previous year's foals. A set of twins, but neither had lived long. She'd delivered early, and neither of the two were strong enough to get up quickly. The harsh life the herd led took a toll on them, and they had passed. At least it hadn't been by coyotes.

A pang of sadness hit her as she wondered whether their bodies were ravaged, or if they had ben able to rest in peace. Naga jolted away from such thoughts and shook herself out before calling again, "Keanu!"

Neamh || 3 || Herd Mare || M: Open

Cold. So cold.

The screams of ravenous coyotes slit through the silence of the night in the near distance. The final cry of the foal still ran through her head, over and over again.

The night air felt more frigid than a blizzard. The moon hung in a cloudless sky, yet the stars were still dimmed by the thick layer of dust hanging in the air.

Heavens above, would there be no end to this living hell? Neamh subconsciously pinned her ears and closed her eyes, head becoming heavier with the lack of sleep.

They'd already lost so much. So many. And now a foal, who had barely begun life, was violently ripped from it. She'd been too slow.

Too slow. Surely, if she had been faster, she could have taken down at least two of the mangy creatures. Maybe the foal would have lived. If only she could go back in time and walk with the little one.

Neamh opened her eyes again and moved with heavy footsteps to the edge of the herd, once again pricking her ears and watching with dead eyes. The guilt was overwhelming, and yet, deep down, she knew it wasn't her fault. She would have gotten them both killed.

And yet, that snide little voice continued to whisper, It's all your fault, you stupid animal. If only you were bigger. Stronger. More like your herdmates. The tobiano mare released a long sigh and lowered her head again. How much more of this could they take?

Ouranos || 4 || Herd Stallion || M : Inessa, River, Atolos (Ind)

The pale roan trudged through the dead grass, taking a halfhearted nibble here and there as he moved. The night had not been kind to any of them, and he had a feeling his father would be moving them again soon. It would not be safe to stay in an area where predators had tasted horse. Ouranos was sure they would only become more brazen. Perhaps next time it would be his sister.

That thought was met with a fierce conviction that no such thing would ever happen to little River. His steps hardened as he picked up his pace until he came to a halt beside his mother and sister. He moved his muzzle to Inessa's shoulder and mumbled a tired greeting before asking, "How are you?"

He dipped his pale head to River's darker one and added, "And how is my favorite sibling?"

It was true that River was his only full sibling, but even out of his half-brothers and sisters, she was still the favorite. He had more reason, and more desire, to keep her safe. Especially now. Oh how he hoped she wouldn't be perpetually traumatized by the night's events. That would kill him.

"I found a green patch of grass over by the edge, up front," he offered Inessa. Green was a long stretch, though. "Less brown" would have been a more accurate description. Slightly less crunchy, maybe a bit more substance to it. Meager, but an improvement. Maybe they were close to the river.

River
Filly | 2 Months | Foal | Mentions: Inessa, Atolos, Ouranos

A small filly, merely weeks into her life, was pressed into her mother's side. Her legs, still in that feeble state of awkward and unsteady, held her up, though it was obvious she was half propt against her mother. She had tried laying down about half way through the night, but the sounds of the ravenous beasts at their door had her back up on her feet shortly after. To say her legs were tired was a bit of an understatement.

The youthful foal lifted her head when the low clops of her brother brought him near. Her dark eyes moved to look up at him with tired admiration. He was so big and strong, and didn't have anything to fear, right? She wished she was like him, unafraid of the world and completely capable of taking care of herself. Or, at least, that is how she perceived him, like she did all adults.

Her head craned to look over her mother towards where Atolos, the lead stallion, and their father, stood. Truthfully, the little filly hadn't interacted much with the behemoth of a horse, but he had kindly humored her whenever she had approached him. At least until Sunna left, when she did, even River was a little intimidated by his sour mood to approach him. She knew that he would never hurt her, but he was so big, and she was so tiny, it was easy to be afraid of anything when you were only 8 weeks old.

Her ears perked up as Ouranos spoke to her and she offered him a little nuzzle, taking a step away from Inessa, her legs wobbling beneath her. "Hi Or Or," the little filly still wasn't able to pronounce her brother's name fully, so "Or Or" it was until she could. A gleeful little expression marred her features and she propped up on her hind legs, forelegs on his side. "Are we going to be walkin' again? I'm tired," she murmured, her head leaned back to look at his face.

Adira

Mare || 8.5 years || Deputy Mare || M: [ind.] Atolos, Bia and the herd

The chestnut mare stood in the open, sun beating down on her back and drawing the energy out of her as the humidity rose and the heat intensified. There were a few decaying trees that were nearby that offered a little shade but were occupied by some of the other herd members. The mare would have to wait until an opening came and then she would be able to get some relief from the heat. She, and young Bia, the late lead mare's foal, who she had been caring for since the dreadful day when her friend had died, stood a short ways off from her father Atolos. Though the Deputy was taking most of the heat, she let the filly lay in her shadow to rest and stay out of the sun.

This season had been the most difficult so far, the drought the herd thought would end continued on and only grew worse. In the past years there were dry spells, but none that had lasted this long and were this intense, taking away the rivers and lush valleys, and leaving the herd weaker than it had been a long time. The lack of water and food took a large toll on the herd and when it should have come to an end it didn’t. It soon started to claim the lives of many herd members, and then their lead mare, Sunna, who should have had many years ahead of her, but was cut short. It was only last week that she passed, and it seemed to have changed the lead stallion, and it was harder on her children as well. Now she was caring for her friend's most recent foal.

Adira flicked her ears, a single fly circled her slowly as if it too was as tired as she. Buzzing slowly in the thick air and attempting to land near her. That was the only good thing that seemed to come out of this horrible time. The lack of pesky flies. That was it, the rest was unbearable.

The mare sighed, eyes wandering towards the bulk of the herd, noticing that some were starting to mingle, while others kept their distance. The deputy didn’t quite know what to do, a small part of her wanted to join the others, but it seemed odd with Sunna’s absence, she thought it was wrong not to have her friend near her during this time. Then she would have to move Bia as well, and she wanted the filly to have as much time to rest as possible before the herd would leave again. The walking under the constant heat was enough to tire most horses out but to have a foal do it must be even more draining.

Adira casually hung her head, allowing herself rest and a chance to scan the ground for something edible. The mare took a step forward to reach a dry tuft of grass, or rather, it was weeds but anything would do now. The morsel had little taste and felt prickly to eat but she forced herself to swallow, it’s not like there was much else to choose from. The chestnut mare slowly moved her head to look at the lead stallion, wondering what he would have the herd do next. It had been hard to leave everything they had known behind, but she also had the urge to leave the now foreign landscape. She felt the herd was moving at a satisfactory pace and was hopeful that they would find water soon, then maybe they could all catch a break.
