A 1x1 rp between Xuân and Quad

Character 1 is a demon, just doing their demonly duties and making the rounds, doing their usual collections. They're new to the job, but it's not too difficult. Humans are reliably stupid, always making deals they conveniently forget about when the time comes. The soul collecting gig is pretty good, if a little dull. It's kind of like being your own boss except, well, you do have an actual boss to answer to. At any rate, it's a better existence than those sad sacks languishing in hell. On one of your trips to the mortal plane, you go to collect the dues of Character 2, a human who made a deal oh, some eleven-odd years back. Oddly enough, while you often find yourself dragging humans kicking and screaming, this individual seems unusually eager to go with you, nonchalantly citing that the world's "gone to shit anyway". Regardless of their reasons, they don't seem to have much to lose.

Character 1 makes to whisk the human and their soul away, but finds themselves blocked. Almost as if a door has been shut at the other end. Well, that's odd. What to do now?

Additional twists:
- large scale political issues and bureaucratic nonsense down below have sealed off hell for the time being, leaving the two stuck in the mortal plane for the foreseeable future.
- Turns out Character 2 is actually indebted to more than one demon - oops

Name: Baalatum
Age: He's a demon, so...old? He's probably been around for several hundred years, although he has spent the majority of that laboring in the pits, having only recently gained some "freedom", so to speak.

Gender: Gender's a bit more fluid with demonic entities, but long story short: he presents as male and doesn't bind himself to human gender identities.

Appearance: He most often appears as a man, a cat, or a cat-headed man. As a man, he has dark skin and narrow, feline features. Baalatum stands around 5'11" and has a pretty slender build. Wiry, with the feline strength and grace one might expect of a lurking ambush predator. His eyes are big and almond shaped, a curious shade of pinkish orange that is most certainly not human. His ears are a bit overlarge, slightly pointed and the tops tuck inward, toward his skull. His brows are thin peaks, perfectly manicured, black like the well-kept goatee he wears. His hair is kept in thick black twists that fall to his shoulders and then some, strung through with delicate golden beads. His "at rest" expression is usually some variant of a sardonic half-grin.

In his more demonic shape, he retains the stature of a man but gains the unsettling addition of a hairless feline head in place of his human one. With huge, batlike ears, a few wiry twists of whiskers, and a multitude of dark wrinkles that contort readily to his emotions, there's little doubt that he's some sort of hell spawn - or maybe just a really good illusionist. On a demon scale, his appearance is arguably tame, if a bit odd. He has the right number of limbs and lacks tentacles or spikes. That can easily change, however, given the right circumstances.

He's a demon of comfort first and foremost, and can often be seen dressed in hand-knitted sweaters such as one might expect to see on a dad or a college professor minus the tolerance for children, although he does, of course, have more demon-appropriate attire he may drag out for special occasions or important meetings.

Personality: He's about as cute and trustworthy as a dingo loitering around an orphanage. Most often, he simply does whatever he thinks will most benefit him, and sometimes not even then. He's highly unpredictable with little rhyme or reason to his actions. Even among the denizens of Hell, there must be some order, but Bal bucks the slightest touch of authority with the cool luster of self assurence.

It's not even remotely unusual to encounter such rebels among demons, and to be fair, Bal is merely being true to his nature. It's not exactly his fault that his nature falls somewhere under being a complete pain in the ass. He can be charming, coy, or flamboyant, changing his approach depending on the situation and the time of day. Although he has the potential to scheme for days and can function with intense passion when he feels so compelled, he is easily distracted and hops from one idea to the next, rarely settling for long. He carries himself with the swagger of a politician, but lacks the drive to follow through. It's little wonder that his behaviors have gotten him on more than one person's bad side.

No doubt in part due to his helter-skelter-piss-on-authority attitude, it took him some time to finally work his way out of the pits. After many years of languishing below, he's recently been handed this soul collecting job. It's a lot better than anything he's had to do so far, keeps him engaged, and he's actually invested in what he's doing for once. He's determined to get it right.

Other: He picked up the hobby of knitting some time ago. He's not half-bad, and it's proven to be useful as well as a good way to pass the time, as he tends to get chilly easily.

Appearance

Avery stands at 6’3, with bright, pixie cut hair. They love to dye their hair to match that weeks “style.” Their hair must match their earrings, clothing, and make up, if they wear it. The color has to be bright or neon. Bright pinks, neon green, cotton candy blue, hot rod red, starburst purple, and others along that line. Their earrings are a wide variety, as are their “jewelry.” They wear bracelets, chokers, anklets, rings, basically whatever they feel like. Sometimes Avery wears glasses, but mainly just uses their contacts. They absolutely love buying expensive the contacts that have a colored film, causing their eyes to look any and every color. But glasses makes them look adorable. On some skinny and tall people, glasses give them a nerdy look. But Avery looks just too cute.

During pride month, they wear ones that have a wheel of rainbow film embedded in it, which gives their eyes a rainbow color. Perfect for celebration. Any friends can borrow them, but only their certain pride flags. Avery has every single pride color, which granted them the ability to be quite poor. They had to work night and day shifts to return to their usual wealth status. Their nails can be found painted the colors of the pansexual flag. They always change the sort of “style,” from metallic, gel, pastel, normal, dark, bright, you name it. Color and vibrancy describes Avery perfectly, as does flashy. They have a smile that sort of makes heads turn. Yes they aren’t the best looking, nor are they the best person personality wise, but their smile. It lights up a room. The perfectly straight white teeth isn’t even half of it. What really makes up their smile is the way they carry themselves with it. Proud and confident, with their dazzling smile shining right along. It is one of their most noticeable attributes.

Their normal eye color is a beautiful, dark and milky chocolate, one of the only calming attributes about this person. Their genetic hair is a red brown, which you can see is more red when they’re under any type of light source. Avery’s skin is is a darker tan, a light brown if you will. Their skin color is one of the traits that show their race. They have minimum freckles dotting their face, maybe a couple on each side at the most. Their build is rather unique, a mix of an inverted triangle and a rectangle. You'd have to see them to understand. Their fingers are slender, but rather short, while their legs are long and skinny. Their entire build is on the skinnier and taller side, lanky in other words.

⇒ Attire

Their clothing is one of top priority. Avery is a person who cares about their clothing. They love aesthetics and all that jazz, so clothes shouldn't be any different, should it? They love sequins, poofy dresses on occasions, just flair and drama. Their favorite clothes are bright and blinding, something that makes them stand out in the wide, bland world. Their pajamas are more of baggy shirts and athletic shorts, just something comfy and not too hot or cold. They hate caps, but wear hats that stand out. Their clothes is neat and pristine. Well, sorta. Their clothes is most definitely straightened and not wrinkled, though it may be frazzled or ripped. Most likely on purpose. The “inconspicuous” style is one of flair, but not as much as the usual. They’ll wear a bright shirt, a denim or leather jacket, shorts or leggings, and their favorite shoes. Avery mainly wears platformed shoes. Not the bulky ones mind you, mainly Vans and those smaller, less platformed foot wear. They wear no socks, but on the rare occasion I that their feet hurt, Avery will wear no show socks.

For “fancy” dinners and other occasions along those lines, Avery will wear jeans and a button up. Sometimes they will wear a blouse. On the rarest occasions when they are forced to or it’s a wedding or funeral, Avery will wear a tuxedo, suit, or dress. They absolutely hate any fancy clothes, and stay away from fancy dinners, parties, and celebrations. Avery has a “belief” that any clothing that is fancy is uncomfortable any itchy. They will wear poofy dresses, but that’s it, and those poofy items are rare by themselves.

⇒ Scars

They don’t have any scars that are easily seen, besides a cut on their ear and a scar on their side. When Avery was younger, their little sister kicked them onto a table, resulting in their ear being cut open. Luckily they didn’t need surgery, but that was a traumatizing moment for them, as they were only around the young age of 4 or 5. Their side scar story is one involving a knife, and is a dark moment for Avery.

⇒ Tattoos

They have a tattoo of a snake’s head on their left shoulder, and a dragon curled around their entire right leg. Both aren’t colored, but the shading adds a realistic feature that seems surreal. The snake symbolizes Loki, the god of mischief and trickery. Avery is a tricky fella, and is quite a mischievous person. The dragon represents their tie to Earth, in a way. The dragon is Avery’s anchor, the one that keeps them from drifting into the far beyond.

⇒ Personality

With a knowing look, they are understanding. Avery can relate to most abuses, and helps others get through it as well as they can. They aren’t the nicest person out there, but neither are they the worst and rudest. Avery is respectful, but has their own way of showing loathing or hate. The look in their eyes, the hint of that tone in their voice, the way they hold themselves around that person. Just little things that you have to strain to notice. Avery is overall an actually gentle person. They tend to distance themselves away from people before growing close to them, as they grew too close to their sister, who got them banished from the family property and disowned from the family name. Avery can be found subtly trying to help others. Whether causing a distraction, accidentally dropping something, slipping a piece of paper into another’s bag, making meals and depositing it into someone’s satchel before leaving, and so much more.

Avery stays away from “permanent” relationships. They don’t want to get caught up in an arrangement of love, as they might find someone better and regret ever loving the other. Avery could have a significant other, but they honestly prefer to be free, without ring tied down by a clingy or needy person. Sure, they’d most likely date a person who’s “the one” or “perfect,” but they’ve never found someone like that.

They always seem to be… distant, but not quite so. Yes they’re outgoing, but Avery is far off, shy, distant. Use whatever word that is easiest, but either way, none of them are exactly right. Each words adds onto their personality, but Avery is beyond words, they’re more than what juts describes them. This could be said to most others, but it applies to them – in a sense – more. Avery has mood swings. They could be joking around, but at one phrase that isn’t worded carefully, Avery can be found fuming, or simply leaving the room to breathe. You couldn't know what sets Avery off until you do. Those who know them watch their words.

⇒ Theme Song

I Don't Know My Name – Grace VanderWaal

⇒ Playlist

⇒ Handedness

They are left handed.

⇒ Handwriting

Their handwriting is slightly jagged, as they write in all caps. It's legible, just different.

They are a zoo keeper. They take care of the animals.

⇒ Family

[Axel Samuel Fletcher - 69 - Male - Father - Dying]

[Jenny Monique Fletcher - 26 - Female - Second Oldest | Sister - Alive]

[Elyssa Bella Fletcher - 21 - Female - Second Youngest | Sister - Alive]

[Adrian Jesse Fletcher - 19 - Male - Youngest | Brother - Alive]

⇒ Pet(s)

Trigger: A dark brown monkey. His species is unknown, but the little guy is protective and every bit terrifying. He's adorable, the size of an adult human's palm.

⇒ Crush

None at the moment

⇒ Significant Other

None yet; they're always been single.

⇒ Strengths

Flexible: Avery can twist their entire arm all the way around. They also have the ability to stretch and bend in an inhuman way. This special trick helped Avery feed themselves and their siblings; street performing basically.

Good Arm: Their pitch is terrifying fast, but only their left hand. They throw faster than 90 MPH, and can hit ti right through a wall.

Quick Learner: Avery learns things relatively fast, whther educational, mental, or physical. They are a determined person, who won't stop trying until they succeed.

⇒ Weaknesses

Speech: Avery has trouble with talking... sorta. They talk quickly, and mutter at times, trying to find the right words that lie at the tip of their tongue.

Twitches: Avery has a tendency to twitch when they're nervous, or anxious. Even uncomfortable. This can distract them, and they zone out to focus on nothing but their twitching.

Bossy: Avery enjoys being the boss, and gets grumpy and irratated when they don't get their way. They aren't a bad leader, but can get in their head that they are the only one who can do anything, really.

⇒ Likes

Blankets: Warm, cozy blankets. Wrapped around themselves like a burrito or a caterpillar.

Movies: They love movies, especially the horror movies. Romcoms are their second favorite, and then action. Avery watches all kinds of random movies, going basically once a week.

Animals: Well, they kinda have to, as they are a zookeeper. Avery grew up around many animals, big and small, predator and prey.

⇒ Dislikes

Heat: The heat is a despised thing. The cold and warm is tolerable, but the heat is a big fat no. The sweat is gross, and the heat is just exhausting.

Knives: Avery has had past memories of getting stabbed with a knife. They weren't pretty moments, and they still have one scar, from the deepest cut.

Curses: Cursing is annoying to Avery. Why can't you just use normal words? Slurs are the worst, though. They can deal with some cursing, but slurs are an absolute no.

⇒ Fears

Heights: Not the height, really, but the thought of falling all that way and splattering themselves across the floor.

Crabs: With their odd looking legs, creepy, beady eyes, and pinching claws, crabs are just weird. They even have gills int their shell, gills!

Arachnids: Spiders, scorpions, for the most part. Venemous ones, poisonous, and non-lethal, all the creepy crawlies.

⇒ Greatest Fear

Enclosed Spaces: They have claustrophobia. They don't have a reason for it, but just that being in too small spaces makes them hyperventilate and feel as if they are suffocating

⇒ Natural Talent

Skateboarding: Avery is a great and natural a skateboarding. They know many tricks, and got the speed. Skateboarding is a way they can separate themselves from reality and enter their own world.

⇒ Backstory

Avery had a nice childhood. A rich family, a high status, and a good family. They lived in a mansion, away from the city. Their siblings were amazing people, as were their parents. The family called Avery a male. It was easier than “disgracing” the family. Only the parents knew. Avery’s siblings didn’t think Avery was different from them. Avery decided to come out when they finally understood their “orientation.”

They came out as pansexual. The family was rowdy, but nothing too major. Their parents made everyone in the family, including the siblings and Avery, to not say a word. Avery didn’t agree with the secrets and rebelled, passionately telling their siblings the truth, how they were non-binary. Most of their siblings were fine with it. They didn’t’ really care. But the eldest sister, who was also the second oldest child, despised the LGBTQ+ community. They told the parents and Avery was severely punished. They were cast out of their home at 15 years, firstly because they were non-binary, and secondly because they weren’t straight.

Avery attempted to come back, but they were to be shot if they stepped foot onto the family’s property by the house guards. Avery lived close by in an inn. Later, two of Avery’s siblings went looking for them. The youngest sister, and the oldest brother. The younger brother, and youngest child didn’t want to leave the family alone, the two said. Avery took care of their siblings, and found work, eventually buying a house. It was small compared to what they previously had, but large enough to suit 5 people. Avery was disinherited, but their other two siblings that stayed with them weren’t, as the parents had high hopes for the two, and hoped they would return to the family and leave Avery.

Baalatum | mood: very grumpy

Within moments of landing, Baalatum was certain that this was the worst possible job he'd been handed since he started this whole soul collecting gig. He'd been ushered to some remote hellscape up north. North. North meant cold, he remembered that much from his scattered memories of humanity. Bal didn't do cold. It was ridiculous, given that he was a demon and the whole fire and brimstone deal but yeah, he was cold. He clutched irritably at the finely knitted red turtleneck he wore and cursed under his breath. If he'd known where he was going this time, he would have packed a parka and six dozen blankets. Or switched jobs with someone charged with going to collect souls in balmy Cuba. Now that would have been an easy job.

He blended in fairly well in the northern port city, or as well as he could have given his unnaturally pale pink eyes. Between the cozy red sweater and the braids, he could have been any man on the street - just a foolish one who didn't take the weather into account before stepping out. As he got over the shock of slipping between planes and jumping abruptly from the toasty climate of his home to this frigid wasteland, he shook himself into alertness and tried to focus on the task at hand. If he could just snatch and go, he could get out of here in no time. That, however, depended entirely on the person.

Someone named Avery, he recalled as he withdrew a mobile phone-shaped device and scrolled absently. Tall, colorful, often surrounded by ravenous animals. Well, that was nice. They couldn't possibly be that difficult to find. Then there was the additional help of tagging, a ritual often conducted by demons as a part of striking deals. It made the collecting on the far end so much easier, although it could be hit or miss. Some demons just forgot, getting wrapped up in the art of making the deal rather than thinking about the prize waiting down the line.

Right then. With a final glance at the phone, Bal shoved it, along with his hands, deeply into his pockets and trundled off in what he assumed was the right direction. Find this Avery person, snatch a soul, and get the hell out of dodge. Warmer waters were waiting just on the other side of getting this job done. And...maybe pick up an extra scarf or two on the way. His ears were freezing.

((I just kinda stole some info from your character sheet with the assumption that the demons keep small files on their people to make it easier to track them down later, but give me a shout if it's not working for you and I'll fix it up))

Avery | Mood: Fluffy

The cold breeze of Alaska swirled around, as familiar as life itself. They smiled faintly their hands in the pocket of their overly large winter jacket. Avery carefully looked both ways before jogging across the street, looking rather odd with their hands bundled in the coat. Their large, gray boots thudded the snow covered road, making a muffled sort of sound. All the cars drift slowly past as Avery crossed just in time, the drivers careful of the hiden ice beneath the snow. They kept jogging, wanting to get to their destination before the crowds come.

As they crossed another road the brightly lit coffee shop shone, decorated with Christmas lights and wreaths. Avery grinned and walked in confidently, nodding at everyone. The cashier hooted and Avery smirked. The two did a "brug" then seperated. "So what is it for today Ave?" Avery looked at the menu in faked thoughtfullness, their eyes swimming through the drinks they know by heart.

"I'll take the usual." Their eyes flash to the cashier's and they grin again. The cashier sighed and retorted, "Then why'd ya have to look so long?" Avery rolls their eyes and hands the cashier a credit card, "Because I can, Griffin." Griffin swipes the card and tosses it back to them. "Coming right up." His voice is laced with sarcastic enthusiasm. Avery laughs and catches the card, stalking to the wall to lean back against. They swipe through their phone, and no more than 2 minutes later Griffin calls Avery's name, holding two cups of steaming hot coffee.

Avery thanked him and rushed out, the cashier already back at the cash register. They swerved the building and almost ran into a man, grumpy with his phone hanging out of his pocket. The man looked cold, shivering with red tipped ears. A tourist. Sympathy washed over Avery and they offered the man their extra coffee, a welcoming sort of smile lighting up their face. "Hey. What's your name?"

((And it's fine. I actually enjoyed that little snippet ^^))

Baalatum | mood: is it normal for people to greet others with coffee and smiles

Baalatum was just examining the glittery decorations strung across the street like so many lines from a christmas carol when a person rounded the corner and nearly knocked him over in their rush to get wherever they were going. Under normal circumstances, Bal would have likely ignored them and stepped out of their way, but he was feeling pretty testy given his chilly surroundings, and geared up to shoot back a snarky admonishment. He wasn't by nature a terribly confrontational demon, but hey, everyone has their limits.

"Hey, watch it - woah." He'd started to say when he looked up and something clicked inside him. The person was tall, quite tall, topped with a shock of jarringly neon hair. The display was positively garish, honestly, and not how Bal would ever willingly dress himself. Their smile, on the other hand, was gentle and sweet, perfectly genuine. It caught him off guard, somehow managing to both turn his stomach and set him at ease.

Well that was easy. The person had literally walked right into his hands, and yet Bal was hesitant, suspicious of the unprecedented kindness. He took a moment to figure out what to say.

"Ah - thank you? I am Baalatum." He asked, accepting the coffee with a curious blink. It warmed his palms as he cupped it like a precious fire, appreciating the small warmth. He wasn't sure when he'd last had coffee. Possibly on that job in Portland, when the client had wanted to "talk it out". They'd been chatty, entertaining. Bal had played along because it was something to do and it had given him an excuse to hang around in this plane for a while. He liked it up here, most of the time. Not right now, obviously, but the rest of it was usually nice to visit.

"Where are your beasts? Do you not keep them with you? I suppose it doesn't matter, makes it easier this way." He began, reluctantly switching the coffee cup to one hand so that he could check his phone. Even with the additional warmth, his body position was still tense and uncomfortable. A great cloud of icy vapor fogged from his nose as he scrolled through the phone for a moment, then looked up expectantly, "You are Avery, yes?"

Avery | Mood: Confused

The man looked up at Avery's face almost curiously, his eyes whipping to their hair, then to their smile. The man seemed struggling for words, hesitant almost. It was odd. Usually folks in Alaska would jump for the offer to get free coffee. But not this one. Avery tilted their head as the man took the coffee, claiming his name to be, "... Baalatum." They nodded at the grateful words, attempting tp hide a smirk as t"Baalatum" man cradled the steaming coffee as if it were a bejeweled gem. Avery took a sip of their own beverage before replying, "Nice to meet you."

"Where are your beasts? Do you not keep them with you? I suppose it doesn't matter, makes it easier this way." Avery felt confusion course through themslves, lighting up their face like a Christmas tree. He tentatively rested his coffee in one hand, using the other to grab his phone. Avery tilted their head again. What was going on? Baalatum looked cold, on the verge of shivering with the frezing breeze lapping at his head. His nose burst out a cloud of steam, billowing past Avery. "You are Avery, yes?" The man was looking up expectantly. Avery was about to keep them like that, until the man's neck would burn and he would stop asking ridiculous questions.

"How do you know my name? Who are you? And what beasts? What? You- You think I let the animals from the zoo come with me to the coffee shop?" Avery was staring down at the man, eyes alight with pure confusion. They backed up a step. Beasts? What was he talking about? They narrowed their eyes and took another step back, "Answer or stay away from me. I don't know who you are, and I don't know why you decided to come for me and my 'beasts'."

Baalatum | mood: routine

"I just told you that. I assure you I haven't changed in the last thirty seconds." He replied somewhat glibly, basking in the tiny burst of chaos and confusion he'd caused by those few words. Bal was cold and uncomfortable out here, but not so cold and uncomfortable that his sarcasm was completely suppressed. That was a very near impossible task.

Oh right. Zoos were a thing. A weird, human thing, but a thing nonetheless. He'd forgotten to what serious degree that people liked to collect things, and that their collections sometimes extended to other living beings as well. Buttons seemed a far safer alternative than lions and tigers, but who was he to judge. Even he had a decent collection of knitting needles of all sizes, along with copious amounts of red yarn. Was it still a collection if it was out of necessity?

"It's not my business what your beasts do. Maybe they'd like the coffee shop. Have you ever tried it? Ah, no matter, that's not why I'm here. I'll need you to sign here, please." Somewhat reluctantly, he dismissed the idea of zebras lounging in coffee shops from his mind and flipped the phone around to show the screen. It displayed Avery's name, a fuzzy picture, and a blank line, ostensibly for a signature. A date from nearly ten years ago was printed in bold at the top of the screen. By all human accounts, it was creepy beyond belief, ringing of CIA files and sovereign citizen style stalkers. To Bal, it was just another part of the job. Perfectly ordinary. Still, he knew people could sometimes become alarmed and even hostile. Offering some explanation could help expedite the process.

He bounced lightly on the balls of his feet and took a greedy sip of the hot coffee. "Look - oh, this is quite good, thank you - you agreed to something ten years ago. It was with another demon named Botis, but they might have gone by something different when they talked with you. Maybe you oh, I don't know, wanted to learn wicked guitar or get even with some childhood bully. I don't know what it was, or what you got out of it, I'm just here to collect."
