Maybe it has no gender.
hmmm... but lets think of it this way, what are the exact conditions of it's assistance? maybe that can give us more details. if it only appears on a male wolf maybe it is male, if it only appears on a female wolf, maybe it is female, if it appears on both it could be nonbinary.
