Your paws bleed and burn. Your lungs burn hotter.
Your heart pounds in your chest, thrumming to an unsteady rhythm that you couldn't recite if you tried.
Your ears swivel, the silence unnerving, while your eyes desperately search for an escape from this hellish swamp.
Sometimes your partner's tail flicks out of the undergrowth in your periphery. Sometimes their howl splits the silence that even the cicadas are too cowardly to destroy.
But you saw their body. You saw their death.
You saw... you saw...
But sometimes... sometimes...
A wolf steps out of the kudzu in front of you. Red, but almost indistinguishably so, coat dull and desaturated with some sort of illness. She's small and unimposing, with a narrow frame certainly more adept at chasing rabbits than brawling with a wolf your size. She did not kill your companion - she couldn't have, not as frail as she is - and she is no threat to you.
But then she turns to face you, and you see the fungus parasitizing the right side of her face, emerging out of her empty eye socket as if consuming her from the inside-out. And she walks forward, toward you, and you start to catch sight of various other mushrooms erupting from both fresh and rotting wounds. The wolf before you is no threat - she can't be - but you have no way of knowing whether or not the parasite sprouting from her body is contagious.
"I told you to never return here," she says suddenly, voice hollow and almost echoing within her own throat.
But you don't recognize her. You have certainly never met her before. And you say as much: "I don't know who you are."
"You killed her. You killed her. You k-" her incomprehensible accusations are interrupted by a coughing fit, one that rattles her fragile body until blood is seeping out of the wounds littering her skin and coating the parasitic mushrooms in crimson.
In her disorientation, you seize the opportunity to escape without her noticing, too nervous about the strange fungus to satisfy your curiosity.
