"Just tell him," she whispered, her muzzle inches from his ear.
Row growled and pressed himself against the ground, his gold-green eyes flickering warily between pack members. "I can't. I'm not stupid."
Kade huffed and fell back on her haunches. "All it'll take is a few words. What's the worst that could happen?"
"A lot."
Kade rolled her eyes. "Don't start asking me to tell him then."
Row growled under his breath. Kade knew as well as he did what could happen if he ever approached the sleek black wolf across the clearing the way he wanted to. Bloodspill and Sanguine were surly losers, and Rain wasn't the type to punish them without solid cause. Bloodspill had too many years of practice to be caught, and Sanguine's threats were simply too vague to even be called threats. They prowled the mothers den with clever stories and heavy paws. Caskade and Tarrow had learned when their lips must stay sealed, no matter their intentions.

The black wolf's ebony nose twitched, capturing the nearby scents for thought. "Kade. You'll find a buck in that direction. Bring it downwind."
Kade dipped her dappled head and slunk obediently through the undergrowth.
"You have something to say?"
Row bristled slightly at the wolf's silky words.
Avice sat, tail curling around his arched toes. "I'm not stupid. Speak."
Row's ears flattened against his head, and he turned his head away to keep from looking at the older wolf. Of course, he couldn't tell him. The most opportune moment, and he couldn't say anything. Somehow, this would get back to someone who didn't want to hear what he wanted to say.
And still Avice sat. Still he stayed there, waiting for the words to come. For courage to win over Row's heart, as if he knew it would happen if he waited long enough.
"There is a deer being driven downwind towards us as you waste your moments." Avice's words were crisp and concise. No anger entered his voice, no impatience moved his body. His words gently reminded Row that he had only bought a short amount of time for them.
Row's paws trembled, and warmth spread through his fur. He hadn't ever been this afraid, and he hated that. He knew he was strong enough to say what needed to be said, but it was as if his very body had taken the warnings, the dangerous threats and flashes of teeth to heart and refused to obey him. What would happen afterwards? Avice wouldn't tell a soul, he knew. That was simply his way.
He lifted his eyes to meet Avice's, the twin mismatched colors searching for some strength to grasp.
"You are amazing."
Row let out his held in breath, and took air in slowly. Avice didn't bat an eye. Row's mouth turned downward.
"I can't say the words I want to say, because I don't have them. Beautiful is as close as I can get, but that isn't right. Vibrant, but you aren't bright. Lively, but contained. Open, but you barely speak." Row's breathing steadied. "I want to walk where you walk, and listen to what you have to say. I want to dream your dream, follow as far as you'll take me."
Row swallowed nervously and set his jaw as Avice studied him carefully. He had managed some of what he had always wanted to say, without even a stutter. Managing to even speak was an amazing acomplishment. Finding his footing while his paws still trembled was beyond anything he had anticipated.
"I am nothing." Avice met Row's gaze calmly. "Everything I have has come from cooperation with others. I can teach you nothing, and I have nothing to give. My life belongs to my pack."
Row let the knot in his throat grow and grow. The pack had given him everything? The same pack that had taken everything from him? The same pack that ripped his hopes at every turn? The pack that refused to change? This wasn't the same pack Avice was talking about. It couldn't be. He was so different from everyone else, above it all. He couldn't possilby be talking about this pack.

Row doesn't make decisions lightly. He can't be rushed to choose, and he has a whiplash response to those who pressure him for one. He looks more on the inside than to the outside appearances when thinking. He can admire beauty for what it is, but most of the beauty he sees is internal. If you ever have the pleasure to take a glimpse inside his head you'll find a bright and strangely nostalgic place. Row is extremely sensitive to words and actions. He can be hurt from an unmoving statue just as much as a wild ostrich would. He contemplates more than he thinks. Options are important, and leadership is deadly. Anyone with power over him is going to deal with his impatience and suspicion until they prove their trustworthiness. You can't tell him what to do without accidentially or purposely creating bloodshed.
