Biography Night was taken into the pack shortly after Malum's sad passing, in hopes to be a successor.
Howls of anguish and sorrow echoed throughout the forest, startling the pup from his short sleep. The moon was high in the sky, painting the upturned soil silver, showing Ianook the prints he had left the day before, leading to the tree he was leaning against. He pressed himself against the trunk, fear rooting in him and growing like brambles. He was aware of running footsteps, of a wolf sprinting towards him. Ianook braced himself for the worst, closing his eyes just as the stranger emerged from a cluster of thistles. They abrubtly stopped. The pup couldn't help but open his eyes, and saw a tear-streaked face gaping at him. A soil-brown she-wolf peered at him, aghast, stuttering. Eventually she gave up on what she was originally trying to say and forced out a small "Hello." "H-hi." "Uh... You'd better come to camp with me." That seemed to be more of a question than command, but Ianook went along anyway, seeking warmth and mother's milk. After a relatively short walk, a clearing emerged, silver moonlight spilling from the sky, illuminating a cluster of wolves, many looking as though they had been grieving. A lithe female was speaking from a tree branch, tone solemn. "Now that Malum's gone, we will have to find a worthy successor. All pups will be thoroughly inspected--" She cut off at the arrival of Ianook, and her eyes widened. The nice female who found him spoke: "Murky Waters, my Alpha, I think I may have found one..." The Alpha leaped down, onto the sandy ground, and a small explosion of dust accompanied her landing. The pup had to step back to take the whole of her in. She was silver as the stars, but from her chest down the red-brown of mountains at dawn. Calculating blue eyes roved down his back, and, Ianook thought, she was not as lithe as she'd seemed. Powerful shoulders were accompanied by a long spine, connecting muscular haunches to a bushy tail, which was swishing back and forth. The pup looked back to her face, where a broad muzzle was pointed down at him. Suddenly he felt small and insignificant, naked, dwarfed by her power. He shrank back, behind the brown wolf's leg. The Alpha smiled. "He's the one!" Ianook was still confused by this all, and became more so when the silver-and-red she-wolf grabbed his scruff with that wide muzzle of hers and stood taller. "He's the one!" She cried again, joy evident in her voice. Murky Waters's scent washed over him, the smell of sweet earth and grass, the smell of rainy nights and warm moss. She bounded towards the tree he'd first seen her on, and, ignoring his little yelps of fear, leaped onto a large branch, a branch he'd soon know as the 'Council Branch'. She set him down, and began her announcement anew. "This pup was sent to us from Lupus, to succeed Malum, our valued Beta. We shall still miss him dearly, as long as we live, but this very pup is here to support us in his place. He will ebb the pain of our loss. Do you have a name, dear child?" She looked deep into his eyes, and a warm, motherly light emanated from them. Something told Ianook to lie-- if this was to be his new life, he should start with a new name, as well, shouldn't he? "N-no, ma'am. Alpha? No, I don't," he stuttered, unsure what to call this mighty and respected wolf. She seemed not to mind his unsure voice, and nodded. "Then I shall name you. You, dear pup, shall be known as Night! Night, for the darkness that surrounds us in this time of grieving. Night, for the moon that shines, for the light you bring to us!" The many wolves below cheered, yips and yaps, barks and howls all merging together to form a noisy symphony of joy, joy in this time of sorrow for this pack-- his pack. Night drew himself up, boldly facing the crowd, which caused greater cheering. The clouds overhead split, and a silver streak of moonlight fell from the clouds, splashing down and bathing him in its godly luminescence. He raised his head to the sky, thanking Lupus for this future he was given. He would be known as Night, the greatest of Betas. As soon as the thought entered his brain, it morphed into a will. He would be known as Night. He would defend the pack with everything he had. Night would become more than just a name; it would be a legend.
