In the Forest, Under Cherries in Full Bloom (桜の森の満開の下, Sakura no Mori no Mankai no Shita) is a short story by Japanese author Ango Sakaguchi (坂口安吾, October 20, 1906 --- February 17, 1955), published in 1947. It tells the story of a bandit living in the mountains who makes his living off of killing travelers. One day, he comes across a man with his wife; entranced by the woman's beauty, he kills the husband and takes her home as his new wife, who immediately orders him to kill all his other wives, save for the crippled one that she keeps as their maid. The beautiful woman commands him to go above and beyond for her, telling him to find luxurious foods and items for her, and to murder people and bring to her their heads, which she then would play with. She convinces him to move to the capital with her, and there he continues to bring to her the heads of people she requests. The bandit grows dull and uninterested in life in the city and killing people day after day for his wife and eventually refuses to kill for her anymore and decides to move back to the mountains. The woman pleads for him to take her with him, to which he agrees. On their way back in the mountains, they come across the cherry blossom forest along the Sazuka Pass, which the bandit and most travelers had always avoided out of fear of the blossoms; there, the bandit finally realizes that his beautiful wife is a demon and strangles her to death before her body disappears, and he is left alone under the blossoms and falling petals of cherry trees in full bloom.
