Character Description
Biography
Bella watched the four adult wolves disappear through the thicket across the clearing. From beneath the roots that hid the den entrance, the small pup could keep an eye out for the signal, while staying out of sight. Not that anyone was looking. Pack wolves swarmed the den site, but they were all sleeping.

Her eyes, now adjusted to the moonlight, passed over the many bodies. Waiting. Then two small heads appeared from behind a huge cream wolf, and Bella's tail wagged.

With a small stumble, she jumped out and ran towards them, stealthily avoiding limbs and tails after only narrowly avoiding one of the juveniles' front paws in her rush. The two other pups met her halfway. "Careful," the shaggy haired one hissed, "you almost got us caught there, Bellatrix."

Bella let her head lower in apology, but then the other pup - cream like the wolf the pair had hid behind - nipped at his brother's ear before turning towards her. "Dothrakhqoyi is just nervous. You did well, Bella," he whispered, "Now come on, the patrol must be through the pine trees by now."

The cream pup headed for the thicket, and Bella would have followed if a paw had not stepped in front of her. Looking up, she froze. In the near dark, her mother's gold eyes gazed down at them. "Joining the night patrol, are we?"

With a small whine, Dothrakhqoyi sat down in defeat. His brother whipped around bravely, tail raised high. "It wasn't-, we just wanted to watch the deer herds by the creek, that's all."

Her mother chuckled. "You are loyal, Sifzumos, a lot like your mother." She paused before assessing all three pups with kind eyes. "But you must all understand that out there is no place for pups on their own at night."

"But-"

"No," her mother growled. She gave each of them a stern look. "Your father would be disappointed." Bella knew little of the sire that the three of them shared, only that Sifzumos and Dothrakhqoyi were her half brothers, and that their father was not a pack wolf.

Her mother used her muzzle to gently push Dothrakhqoyi towards his brother and in the direction of the slumbering cream wolf. "Now, go back to your mother and get some sleep."

Assuming that she would get the same instructions, Bella turned to the den with a sigh. "Bellatrix," her mother suddenly called.

Instead of climbing inside the den, they leap onto the flat rock beside it. It took Bella a few jumps, but she made it to her mother's side. "I don't get it," Bella protests, "You fought and went on patrols when you my age. Why can't I?"

Her mother sighed. "I didn't fight until I was a juvenile, and I only patrolled because we had no den site to call our own."

Bella followed her mother's gaze to the clearing. "You said, that when grandmother joined the pack, all pups had to train."

Her mother gave a thoughtful nod. "When Bathsheba joined the pack, it was still new. Its alpha pair, this pack's founders, had recently passed. The only members left were three old females. They were seasoned hunters, experienced warriors..." Bella tried to picture them with the same battle scars her mother carried.

"She became their apprentice. Our pack's founders, Antares and Lyra, did not have any surviving descendants, so your grandmother took over as alpha and ended up raising me to-"

"Take over as alpha after her!" Bella exclaimed, carried away by the story. "Yes," her mother chuckled, but then something sad crossed her face, "but I only fought so that you didn't have to. I never truly intended to lead."

Bella remembered the title her mother had been given. "Will I be alpha?" she asked curiously.

There was a pause. "You are the blood of Bathsheba. One day, the pack will look to her blood. Whether you will be there to lead them is up to you."
