Biography
I sit on the mountain's peek, shivering under the bare tree as the snow falls on me. A howl in the distance sends chills up my spine; I cower against the tree trunk and flatten my ears.
This is no life for a pup. Alone, abandoned, unwanted and shunned.
I curl up in a ball and close my eyes. Why did my Mama leave me? Am I not good enough? Will she ever come back? I've been here all day, and now the moon floats high in the sky. All I can think about is how scared I am, how there's so many creatures and bigger animals out there that would hurt me. Why isn't Mama here to protect me?
A bark startles me out of my rest, so I jump behind the tree and peek my head out to take a look. A larger wolf, black with slight silver in her fur, watches me with her head tilted. I hunch low and hope the tree covers my entire body.
"What are you doing here, little one? Did you get lost?" she asks.
Of course, I can't speak yet, because my eyes have barely opened. I whine instead.
"I won't hurt you dear, you're alright," she says softly. I hear her paws crunch in the snow as she approaches. "Here, let me take you some place warm," she grabs me by the scruff. Her scent fills my nostrils; mountains with snow, with a slight sweetness. Almost like honey.
She brings me to a den filled with more wolves. I start to yelp and squirm, attempting to flee my impending death. Surely, they'll all kill me. Where is Mama?
"Who is this?" One of the males approach. His coat is black, like the she-wolf's, though he has an odd pattern across his pelt. His form is massive; he's even bigger than my Dad was.
"I'm not sure, I just found her stranded out in the blizzard," the she-wolf answers. "I'm going to take care of her; she smells of the valley. Whoever brought her here intended for her to die."
He closes his eyes and shakes his head. "Whoever that pack is needs to stop leaving all of these pups for us. Either they stop breeding, or they start learning how to care for them." He turns to me, his face growing soft. "Don't worry little one, you'll be safe here."
~ Years later ~
I run through the mountains, my paws pounding the ground, carrying me as fast as they can, sending snow scattering in my wake. Behind me is my best friend, Onyx, chasing me with much more speed. Of course, having a belly swollen with pups really slows me down.
Before she can catch me, I jump to the side, so when she leaps, she lands on the ground. We both grin at her clumsiness.
"Good job," she pants.
"Thanks," I reply. "Not bad for having runts in me, huh?"
"No, not bad at all," she agrees.
The sky leaks snowflakes, so we both know it's time to go inside. If a storm comes, we need to be in our den, where it's safe.
I feel myself smile, because I know I have somewhere safe to call home.
