Don't leave a puppy in a crate for 1-2 hours based on how you feel about something they've done. Dogs do not understand confinement for that long as a punishment, lol. |

positive punishment can work, but positive reinforcement is usually agreed to be better long-term ^^ i /think/ that's skinners theory, there are plenty of other theories to consider though. |

Ecifircas, I've never had a dog before, so I don't know. That's the only reason I'm asking. I started caring for him a few months ago |

My pup has got really into stealing shoes recently. He trades them for a single piece of kibble though so I think we're good for now |

Everyone in chat leaving their dogs in cages for 1 to 2 hours because it doesn't understand human constructs and accidentally made you mad is funny as hell. Dogs do not remember things that long. |

A water spray isn;t harmful to the dogs as we never spray their face. We have always sprayed their feet. With the little nose bop, we did it as a two fingered clap type of thing with hardly any pressure. We have never harmed our dogs in any way. These methods worked a lot better than a trailer has for them. <3 We've owned 6 dogs and each of them have been gently trained with those methods. No harm ever comes to our dogs. |

My dog is spray bottle trained. He knows he did something wrong when he sees it but I want to try and adjust him to other punishment methods because I use the spray bottle to water smaller plants in my house and he thinks I'm going to spray him. |

Night Shade, you probably shouldn't be punishing your dog with confinement if you have to ask wolfplay how long to leave them in there for, lol. |

my friends dog has been taught to fear the chancla so he doesn't chew them but he's still a little shit affectionately of course |
limbo |
associating yourself with punishment is just not the best way to go. it doesnt teach the dog to stop displaying a behaviour, it just teaches them to be afraid of you. but to each their own. |

We stopped with the spray bottle when she turned around a year old, and shes four now, so its been a hot while |
Vesper |
ZD I was only saying that because it worked well with my dog, but to be fair, she absolutely hates water haha |
Vesper |
A bop on the nose can help sometimes, but a very gentle one of course, though, it tends to work with older dogs and not puppies as puppies will see that as you trying to play |
limbo |
spraying dogs with water is not an effective method of training, to be completely truthful |
Night Shade |
Moose, I don't think you're being too lenient, it just seems to be what works. Like they said to me, document what he does and leave him in there linger if he doesn't seem to be getting it. |
Vesper |
Moose, if it's a puppy, then you should keep them in longer. Depending on how long it takes him to settle down that is. ut I recommend keeping them in the crate for an hour or two depending on the severity of the bad behavior |
Moose |
Does that mean I'm too lenient on my pup? I'd just let him back out when he settles (no barking, pawing at the gate ect) and put him back in again if he repeats the bad behaviour |
