Biography Breed:300m or 1 apple
Noctilucence, like many wolves, was named for the conditions surrounding his birth. It was a warm summer night. His mother howled to the sky, to the moon, as if cursing the night for the agony she was in. It was at some point, during her long and painful labor, that the night began to shine. The clouds lit up in the deep twilight, and a strange sense of peace came over the she-wolf.
At that exact moment, Noctilucence entered the world, and the sky welcomed him with its dazzling phenomena. He was the only pup ever born to his mother, and through-out his life, she was fiercely protective of him.
His mother was a pack wolf, and if she returned to the den with her weak, little pup, her alphas would not be impressed. She was never supposed to have become pregnant, since it was during the time of the alpha pairs own pups. Worse still, she had snuck away when her pregnancy had begun to show, and delivered her pup in solitude. If she returned, she may be banished, or her pup may be put to death. Previously being a lowly omega of no significance, she believed Noctilucence to be the only thing of worth she had given to the world, and so she saw that she had no choice but to raise him on her own.
The first year of his life was tough. His mother's milk was thin, and he grew less than he should have. She wasn't able to make as many kills on her own, nor able to bring down large prey. When Noctilucence was old enough to eat flesh, his mother ate less and less, always sharing the larger portion with him. She was withering away before his eyes.
There were other things, too. Hunters would pursue the pair, and bears would drive them out of any den they might temporarily claim. Sometimes, his mother's catches, small as they were, would be stolen by coyotes or other wolves.
A year passed, and his mother grew frailer still. She couldn't even hunt anymore, and Noctilucence fed her each day and night, just as she had done when he was a pup. Nothing he did seemed to restore her strength, her health. Though he was still a young wolf, little more than a pup, Noctilucence understood that his mother was giving up her life in exchange for his, and that she would die soon.
"Don't worry about me," she said, when he expressed her concerns. "The night you were born, the sky light up. I realized that all my life, I was meant for just one thing."
The male gave a whimper. His mother believed she had fulfilled her purpose by bringing him into the world, and thus she had no fear.
"Please don't give up," he said, giving her weak body a nudge with his snout. "What would I do without you? Where will I go?"
"Anywhere you want," she answered, giving his muzzle a lick. "The night smiles upon you. You will always be watched over, even when I'm gone."
"But I don't want you to go!" He whined, curling up beside her. His tail was buried between his legs, for despite his age, he was a perceptive wolf. He knew now was the time. He knew from this day forward, he would be alone.
She gave no response. She had breathed her final breath.
He stayed beside her long after her body had become cold. He stayed beside her for days, ignoring the pain in his stomach. He felt lost, without direction, completely empty and alone.
And then it happened to him, as it had happened to her. The summer sky lit up, hanging clouds like wisps in the night. Her memory ran thick through them, pushing him, urging him to get up on his feet and carry on.
He stood up, shaking the dirt off of himself. He would not give up. She had done it all for him, after all. He would see her in the night sky, would know her by the glowing clouds that had marked his birth. She had said it, too.
The night smiled upon him. She would forever be there, watching over him.
