Biography
Ilyrea never desired to be Queen of the Bron Lands. Her heart desired to roam beyond to the Red Wastes, the Dragonbone Mountains, even to discover the mysteries of the caverns where the Nameless Ones dwelt. Yet, because she was the Crown Princess and sole heir to the throne, she was not permitted to go where she wished. She was too valuable, her mother told her. To be secluded heightened mystery. Mystery that could be used to one's advantage. It gave one an aura of power, negotiation and tribute were the roles of ambassadors. A Queen was seen in battle and at ceremonies and among her own people. Ilyrea had to learn duty, but she never loved it. She was seven before she gave birth to the daughter who would be her heir--Astral. She never felt any great love for Astral's father, not ever wishing to be tied down anything more than she was already. The wolf from the Red Wastes who sired Astral did little more than fulfill a role. She understood the desire for freedom, and thus gave more privileges to those in her pack. She allowed for mated couples to join together--beginning with Erasmus and Cassindra, then with her daughter, Astral, and Terran Reid, and for both her grandsons--Aemon and Justinian. Rather than follow a distinctive bloodline of Queens, she named her grandson Aemon to be the Highborn Prince. For generations, Queens had reigned. Now a King would rise from House Bron. Ilyrea felt most alive when she was in battle, when she was able to decide life or death, for it was one of the few freedoms afforded to her. She shared a cave with her daughter, her grandsons and their mates, and her great-children. She loved each and every one of them most dearly. She was closest in confidence to Justinian's daughter, Perpetua, for they shared many of the same qualities. Theodore was innocent and gentle, with the softest heart in the pack. And Jocelyn, Jocelyn was her future and her security. She listened often to the sounds of her family's voices bouncing off the rock walls, reminding herself while she remained here. The Queen's own chamber, obscured by an illusion of rock formations in the royal caves, was a quiet place at night. Ilyrea missed her mother during those times the most. At times she felt like she even chafed at living. Ilyrea was more suited to be a leader than a Queen--she did not have the desire to dominate, exploit adversaries, or expand her realm. With her line more than secure, Ilyrea felt as if her role had been fulfilled. What purpose was there for her? As Queen, she could never truly join her family in the main cove and she never trusted a mate not to take her power and her freedom away. She hoped through her daughter and grandson's alliances within their pack that they might bear the burden together. Ilyrea knew only that she wished for her death to be her own choice. Ilyrea gave up her crown in her fourteenth year--and passed it to her daughter Astral. Scholaras discovered a growth on the Queen's side--and bound by her oath as a healer, could tell no one what it meant. Ilyrea took it as divine providence. It was her time to go. There would be no grave for Ilyrea. She abandoned House Bron with her own dignity. She would not waste away. Instead she journeyed to the lands beyond, spending her final year seeing the Dragonbone Mountains, the Red Wastes, and the unknown horizons. She passed in profound peace, reveling as she lay down in the heather, that only the gods would know who rested there.
