My mouth tasted like ash, my legs were shaking and my eyes could no longer focus on the horizon.
Panting, I continued aimlessly but refusing to stop, repeating the same scene in my mind over and over again.
"But why!?"
"Enough! You will never be the alpha! It is time for you to learn to live with your limitations."
My mother was silent for a moment. She was almost as stunned as I was by what she had said.
"Sinnin... We all recognize your worth. You don't have to prove anything to anyone."
She said in a quiet tone, but I was already lost in my anger.
"You're a liar! I know everyone despises me because of my defect! I'm going to prove to you that it doesn't mean anything. What you really believe is that our lineage is tainted, that we don't deserve more. You never fought for leadership because you are a coward, but I'm not."
I ran out before she could answer. Cala and Alyo were out of the den as I'd imagined, but I didn't give them a sinlge glance.
"Sinnin!" It was Cala's voice, who was following me.
At that moment, just hearing her voice made my blood boil, so without being able to control myself, I pounced and bit her hard in the first place I could, the base of her ear. Despite her struggles and screams of pain, I didn't let go of her until Alyo, who was coming after us, tackled me to get away from her.
While he was helping his sister, I escaped.
And now I am here, in the middle of the desert. Hungry, delusional and repentant. I know I won't be able to continue much longer. And after what I did, no one will come looking for me.
I collapsed from exhaustion. Thinking for the last time about my mother, on how I was sorry, and how I betrayed her and my family.
I woke up a day or two later in my den. With wet moss covering my body.
I would find out shortly after that Alyo and Cala followed my trail and managed to find me before it was too late. That day I knew that, even hating them, I had their loyalty.
So they would have mine.

"I think this is a bad omen."
Aoris was a strange pup. One of few words, and every so often he would say things like this. Hachís had accidentally broken one pottery after being startled by the sudden sound of a crow. But the boy had given her more importance than necessary.
He was supposed to accompany us exploring as part of his apprenticeship, but after this he flatly refused, so instead we were joined by one of Cala's pups, Drych.
We went out at sunset, as the inclement summer weather made it almost impossible to explore the desert, where we were heading. The disgusting desert.
Everything went as usual: sand, bones and catus for kilometers. Although having to teach the pup how to track and hunt made it more enjoyable.
Cala injured her leg fighting a bear, so we decided that it was enough and we headed home.
Or we would have, if a bloody sandstorm hadn't happened.
When we realized we had it almost on us, we tried to find a place to hide, but time was running out.
Finally, I heard Panía say "Over here!" While running to a cave almost invisible thanks to the sand. We all immediately ran for shelter, but it was then that I realized something.
Cala was still a long way off with Drych by her side, his wound had worsened and she could barely walk. Me and Alyo rushed to help her, but to no avail, we wouldn't make it in time.
For an instant, everything stopped, our gazes met as she said to me
"Take Drych."
My body moved without my noticing, I took Drych and carried him into the cave.
I still didn't give up, I wanted to go back to Cala and help her, but when I turned around the storm swept with all its force in front of us.
And when it subsided and calm returned, Cala had vanished as well.
