Erato crouched behind the bush, wagging her tail. She stealthily closed in on her prey, then pounced!
Sekeni whimpered as something landed on her tail. She turned her head around and saw what had caused the mischief.
"Erato!" Sekeni scolded her daughter. " Must you attack my tail? And with the fury of a wolverine to boot! Really!"
Erato grinned "But mommy! I was hunting! And it was a huge snake that was about to eat the pups and I bit it and saved the pack!" She said proudly, putting on a heroic pose.
Her mother sighed " I know you have no siblings to play with but there are other pups in the pack. Why don't you go play with them?"
Erato ducked her head shyly, "I don't have to do I?""No, but why wouldn't you?"Erato grinned slyly," Because I like it here with you!"
Her mother sighed once again "My daughter, you're going to be the death of me! Now go on and play with the other pups. You'll be fine my brave little girl, I promise. You can show them what a good hunter you are!"
This time it was Erato's turn to sigh. "Yes mama".
She walked slowly to where the other pups were wrestling.She didn't really want to wrestle, she just loved to mess around with her mother. Erato yawned. She'd rather take a nap by this bush and bathe in the sun. Just for a few minutes...
Erato awake to her mother standing over her.
"Oh thank goodness I found you! How long were you going to stay gone? Do you know what you've done to me, being away all this time? Why I thought you'd gotten lost or kidnapped or worse!"
Erato yawned and lazily stood up, "How long has it been? I was just closing my eyes for a few minutes".
"Hours, Erato, hours!", Sekeni stopped herself from scolding, no, she was determined to be a good mother and excessive scolding was not something she planned to do. She sighed. "Let's go home".
They went back to the den for the day.
Erato was curious about the other pups, but what if they didn't like her? What if she couldn't play with them because she was so shy? What if they didn't like her laid back personality? Lots of pups and young wolves were hyper, she was only hyper with her mother, and only when she ate raspberries. ;)
One evening she walked with her mother down the path to were the pack gathered to mix with each other. Her mother went with the adult wolves and Erato layed down were the pups were playing. She would just watch them play.
The pups were playing a stick game, whoever has the stick must keep the stick away from everybody else who is chasing them trying to get the stick. Whoever ends up having it the longest wins, but there is never anyone counting how long each pup has it so usually there's no winner unless the pups agree who had it the longest.Erato watched this game with interest. She enjoyed watching them. Then a female pup trots over to her.
"Would you like to play?"
"Um, I don't know. I'm not very good at it", Erato said shyly.
"Have you ever played it?" The pup asked
"No", she admitted
The pup laughed, "Well how do you know you're bad at it if you've never played it? Come on, one game. Then if you don't like it you don't have to, but give us a chance. Fair enough?"
Erato took a breath, " I suppose one game wouldn't hurt".
The female pup smiled...
After several games of "Get the stick" the gathering ended. When Erato's mother came to get her, she found her breathless from playing every single game since her invitation to the frolics. The whole rest of the day Erato told her mother every detail of her playing, the games they played, the friends she met.
"Why was I ever so scared of the other wolves? If I had done this sooner, I would have been even happier." She told her mother.
"My darling", her mother answered, " All you needed was some confidence. This evening has given you that. Now you can take on anything you put your mind to ,my brave hearted girl".
Erato smiled, she was growing up.
