Hell's Gate is an enigma, a wolf who came with the wind and could go the same way. Those who speak to him of his past receive roundabout answers, and short ones at that. Conversations are never initiated by himself, and he prefers to keep his wings hidden, though that's certainly no easy task. He's quiet and generally serious, and proves himself to be highly intelligent on those few occasions that he offers up his wisdom. He prefers not to fight, but is not unwilling to scare off enemies with a few well-placed words and a display of his demonic wings.
Hell's Gate's father was a demon. That's what the wolves in his pack said. His eyes were red as blood, his hulking figure bearing a pair of huge black raven wings. When he stopped in their pack's land, they feared him. They sent Mercy to negotiate or, if all went wrong, to be a sacrifice. When she returned, she announced that he had gone. And as her belly grew, she denied again and again that the demon might be their father. But when a pair of black pups, boy and girl, were born, the pack knew what must have happened. The only thing stopping them from chasing the pups off was the fierce love of Mercy. Nonetheless, the pups were avoided. Hell's Gate in particular was a pariah, because of his wings and pure black fur. He stayed near his mother a much as he could. But as soon as the pups were old enough to be on their own, their own pack kicked them out unceremoniously. Both siblings wandered, separate, and Hell's Gate came upon this pack. He could not prove himself in battle, but he could use his terrifying looks for the good of the pack, and he was granted the position of beta male.
