Biography One moment I was standing in the midst of a enormous group of wolves, then the next thing I knew I was being pushed out of the crowd and out into the open. Startled, I craned my neck to blink up at a pale-furred female, who was staring at me like she had seen a ghost. There was a few long moments of silence, until finally the female spoke.
"She's the one," the stranger declared, turning to look at the wolves I had just been among. "She is the wolf who will join our Pack."
The others barked in agreement, and I stared at them, puzzled. I was joining a Pack? Weren't these wolves my Pack? Then again, I barely knew them; they had only taken me in a few days ago after an avalanche killed my family. I correctly guessed that I was only meant to stay with them temporarily, and felt overwhelmed. What now?
The pale wolf bent so she was eye level with me. "I'm Layka, alpha female of the Star Runner Pack. What's your name?"
"I don't have a name," I answered, trying not to let my voice shake. "Mother never got the chance to name us."
Layka's eyes filled with sorrow, and she nodded solemnly. "We can choose a name now, if you like." She paused, then added slowly, "There was a wolf in our Pack who looked almost exactly like you. She was a brave, kind wolf, and a role model to us all. Her name was Syra." The alpha was silent for a moment, obviously remembering her old Packmate, and I wondered what had happened to her. Did she leave the Pack? Did she... die?
"She's not with us anymore," Layka said suddenly, as though reading my thoughts. "But you remind me of her. I see the strong spirit you have in you, and I know you have a great destiny ahead." She gave herself a shake. "I'm sorry, I'm getting lost in my memories. We should head to your new home, and you can choose a name whenever you like."
"I'd like to choose now, actually." I stood as tall as I could, which wasn't too impressive, considering that I was only a few moons old. "I want to be called Syra, just like the wolf you have been talking about."
Layka started, then nodded. "I know you will carry on our dear friend's legacy. You have chosen your name well." She began to walk towards the forest. "Now, it's time to meet your Pack."
I took a few steps after her, then looked back at the wolves who had rescued me. They looked a little sad to see me go, but also hopeful for my future. I barked a farewell and headed after Layka. I knew I was going to like her Pack already; the alpha female was kind and gentle, and from the spring in her step, she seemed genuinely happy to welcome me to her home. I broke into a run, my short legs a blur, and caught up to Layka so we walked side by side, to the Star Runner Pack.
To my new home.
