"I'm sorry, Koko, he's dead. He died protecting me from a bear. I wish I could have swapped places with him." I said to the black female wolf called Koko in front of me.
"He's... Dead?" Koko whispered, shaking her head side to side like she did not believe my news. "He can't be... No no no, not you Slate..."
I was at a loss for words. I'd never seen her like this before.
"Kitsune, would you do anything for the pack?" She whispered to me.
I nodded to her.
"Is there anyone that you would sacrifice your life for?" She continued.
"Maple..." I said, feeling slightly embarrassed.
"Do you love her?" Koko asked me.
"... Yes. I do. We've loved each other for a while now." I replied after a moment.
"Kitsune, when I'm gone, will you lead?" Koko asked me.
"Me, lead? Surely there would be a better-"
"It's got to be you, Kitsune. I trust you more than any other wolf in the pack.
"With a deep sigh I told her my answer. "I will lead, Koko."
My time to lead came earlier than I thought that it would. Koko drowned herself in the river that night. The whole pack grieved for her long after that.

Maple died last night. I feel like Koko did all those years ago. Why, why, why, couldn't the Stars take me instead?
I found the perfect spot to bury her. A maple tree. I picked leaves off it and made two crowns out of them. One for me, one for her.
