The sent of gunpowder and metallic blood hung in the forest air. It was the type of smell that made animals running for the hills, or freeze out of fear. A large ebony black wolf, slowly, dragged himself through the dark and shadowed forest. Pain ripped through his limbs and acid rose in his throat, the sent of his burnt fur and flesh made his eyes begin to water. The black wolf went by the name of Rune, and he had made a stupid mistake. He had wanted to please the alphas by bringing them a special kill, the heart of a lamb. Rune had snuck out of the den early in the morning when everyone was still asleep, and quickly followed an old, human made, trail to a farmers house. The farmer was notorious for killing wolves and hanging their pelts around the outside of his house. Stupidly that didnÂ’t scare Rune, he had somewhat of a hero complex that day. He thought he was untouchable, unkillable, and that was the beginning of the end.
Rune quietly crept around the perimeter of the farm, trying to pick out the perfect target. His ears flicked back and forth as the sound of bleating sheep echoed across the field. Rune smiled a wicked grin and could practically taste the blood in his lips. A fluffy white lamb walked over to the wooden fence and began to rub against it, this was going to be his kill. Rune looked around and saw no sign of the farmer, this was his chance, Quickly he crouched low to the ground and began to make his way over to the little lamb. The white lamb spotted the wolf and began to back away from the fence. A bleat escaped the fluffy creature, alerting the other sheep to danger. RuneÂ’s heart rate began to rise, and fear began to creep its way in. Rune froze, the sound of a gunshot rang through his ears. It was only after he had heard the sound that he begun to feel the pain, the male wolf looked over towards the house and saw the farmer standing on his porch, shotgun in his hands.
Adrenaline was now running through RuneÂ’s veins, and blood was running out of his right shoulder, just slightly below his heart. His muscles coiled and Rune took off running towards the safety of the woods. The farmer fired off two more shots, but missed both times. Rune had continued to run until the blood loss had become too much, he could smell his packmates. He was almost home, Rune let out a pained yelp as a stick poked him in the shoulder. The pain caused black spots to form around the edge of his vision, his body felt suddenly very heavy. Rune collapsed to the forest floor, the sound of rustling leaves and heavy breathing surrounded him. A familiar scent filled his nose and he recognized it as one of his pack members.
“Rune! hold on!” A male voice echoed in his ear, right before the darkness swallowed him.
