♝ But a Pup
Ashur, like many, was born with no great destiny in mind. All he knew, in the first months of his life, was the warmth of his mother and the amusement of play fighting with his siblings of which he had several. Although he didn't show the great potential some of his brothers and sisters did, it was a happy life. A content one. But one he was not fated to remain in.
♝ His New Pack
From the very first moments he left both his den and mother's side, Ashur was fascinated with the world around him. It was simply so big, so mysterious, so beautiful. He wanted to see all of it. But alas, the day came in which the new pups were assigned their future careers; he was not among those chosen as a scout or warrior. Rather, he was labeled as an omega - a caretaker for future pups. All the pleads he made to change this went ignored and disappointment weighed heavily on his heart.
Despite this, Ashur did not give up. On the contrary, he quickly decided that all that was needed was to prove himself. Of course! If the other wolves could just see what a good explorer he could be, than they would realize their mistake! And so, when it was time for the next patrol to head out, he followed them. Only, such a journey was not one for a pup and it didn't take long for him to fall behind. For him to grow lost and frightened. The more he walked, the more uncertain he was of which direction they could have gone or which way he'd come from.
Night fell and an exhausted and chilled pup curled up beneath the protection of a bush. Surely, if he stayed still, his mother would come and find him. Surely, by morning he would be home, warm and full and everyone would be so happy they wouldn't even scold him. His pack never came for him. It wasn't for several more days of wandering and searching that he was found by another, much smaller pack. One that consisted only of elder wolves but which greeted him as though he were a hero rather than a scared, hungry pup.
For you see, it had been prophesied many years prior, on the day the last alpha male, Erebus, had passed away : The first pup to arrive in their pack would bring them all peace and prosperity. Alas, in the time that followed, not a single pup had been born and the pack's hope had slowly begin to dwindle. Ashur's arrival was therefor seen as a sign.
He was their champion to be.
♝ Becoming Alpha
It was no great surprise, than, that Ashur would become the next alpha male. Throughout the remainder of his puphood, he trained and grew beneath the watchful but distant eye of the alpha female, Alesta. By the age of two, it was decided that he would take his place beside of her. In the beginning, Alesta sought to keep her distance from him for he was no replacement to her once mate and his predecessor. However, as the months passed, Ashur's determination and dedication to the pack gained not only her respect but her friendship as well.
Ashur grew to love her dearly.
By the time his juvenile year was drawing to a close, they'd had their first litter of pups. The first litter the pack had seen in a long, long time. Celebrations were had. In the following years, they had several more pups. Only three of which remained in the pack while the others, once grow, set out to see the world. Alesta was an old wolf, though, having been seventeen when he first joined the pack, and she passed away after a few years. The next year, he took on a new mate, Astrid. And although they were together longer and had many more pups than he and Alesta did, he never forgot nor loved anyone as much as he did Alesta.
♝ An Old Wolf
For twelve years, Ashur served as the alpha male to his pack before, at last, stepping down to allow someone more youthful to take his place. For though he was only fourteen, he had seen more of the world than he had ever dreamed and he was growing to be tired. He would never know how Alesta had done it on her own for so long for his old joints just couldn't seem to keep up with the bustle of pack business and ever present energy of the year's new pups. He was content to stay behind and simply watch his pack proudly and so he passed on his title to Malik.
He fathered fourteen pups in which grew up, either to remain in the pack or to leave in search of their own destinies. His old pack had been right - he had a gift when it came to handling pups. Every year, he could be found playing and racing with them. He cherished everyone of them, both those who were his and those who were not. And he was never more proud than the day one of his pups, the child of himself and Alesta, bore him two grandpups.
But most of all, Ashur looked forward to the day he would join Alesta among the stars.
