A small brown pebble
at rest in a stream
catching the sunlight
making it gleam.
This little brown pebble
lay in a sea of gray
among other little pebbles
that didn't look the same way.
The strong current ran
bringing more pebbles each day
but to the brown pebble's disappointment
all of them were gray.
The gray pebbles kept piling
they didn't seem to stop
and more often than not
little brown pebble fought its way to the top.

when the strong, clear current
would carry it away.
down the stream, it would go
and finally, at last
it would find itself in a sea of brown
and forget the past.
