That's really cool!! I think ball pythons are the best examples for color changing genes like that. And yeah the game is just bugged on a few wolves

Due to some things I can't really distance myself from him right now but I may honestly just ask him how his girlfriend is at some point and just ask about her, I feel like it could go 50/50 but I can't really distance myself from him (not saying I'm forcing myself against my will to talk to him) and honestly if he thinks I'm trying to hit on him then I can just say I like someone or something

Honestly it's been interesting to see, I quite literally could make a list of his weird behavior and actions since we split

my neighbor used to have a cat that was Chimera and Viti which was very cool

but in this game its just a bug that makes it look like two pelt changing defects

CHAPTER ONE

I stretched my long, lithe legs as the sun rose slowly over the horizon. Good thing I woke up early. What would have happened if I slept in on my ranking day? I bolted up and trotted out of the den. My pack was small- Thirteen members total, with my alpha and beta, Rising Moon and Shooting Star, in charge. I was only at the guard rank in the pack, standing at the entrance with my mentor, Gray Dust, as we waited for packmates to fill us in on what happened on patrol. Today though, I moved up in ranks. I was going to be able to choose between Hunter, Fighter, Patrol, or Healer. I had always admired the fighters, going out all the time with patrols to possibly fight enemies. They got to hunt sometimes, too.

“Everyone, gather at the HighPeak to witness this wolf moving up in the ranks of our growing pack!” Rising Moon motioned toward me, as I was already walking to the center of the quickly forming circle. “Swift. Yesterday, you showed that you are more than capable of being put to a challenge. I have decided that you are ready for a greater responsibility.” My tail twitched nervously as Rising Moon continued. “Repeat after me. I promise to protect my pack, even if the outcome is death.” I tried to keep my voice steady, my matte-black pelt twitching as she repeated the ancient words. Rising Moon laid her head gently on my ears and said, “Then, I speak this so our ancestors may hear me, I name you Night Runner as you choose your new rank.”

I stood still.

I have a true name.

I have a true name.

Night Runner rose her head. “I have chosen the Fighter rank, as I want to protect my pack in the best way possible.” As my pack began howling my new name, I felt that at last I would finally have some respect in the pack for once.

A few weeks after I had earned my new rank, I held my head high as Rising Moon assigned patrols. I had been put with my brother Dark Shadow, my father Twisted Thorns, Springing Fox, and Tall Adder, the Healer of the pack. Rising Moon had set Dark Shadow as the patrol leader, because he was the most experienced out of the five. “Okay. Today, we’re taking the east side, so be on your BEST GUARD.” He turned to Night Runner. “Night Runner. You will be at the front of the group, with me following. Twisted Thorns, Springing Fawn,” He turned toward the two female patrol wolves. “You will each be on one side of Dappled Leaf. Understood?” His gaze rested on Night Runner when he stopped talking. “Then, Night Runner, take the lead.” She bowed her head as she stood up to get to the front of the patrol, and began heading East of the pack, toward the darkest part of their territory.

As they padded along, I kept my nose down, my ears up, and my eyes flashing from side to side. A storm had been approaching in the hours that they had been out. The forest was dark, almost as dark as night. I raised my tail, a signal to stop. Ahead of me was a den. “That’s the checkpoint. Let’s stop here for the night. And besides, Quick Comet and Bright Moth are there.”

The sun had started to go down when the storm began. It had started as a small sprinkle, but now it was pouring. I had stayed outside the den to guard, and was soaking wet. Suddenly, thunder was heard and a flash of light a second later. “Ashani and Kalypso fighting again?” I turned when my father, Twisted Thorns, came out of the den. “It seems so. I think Apollo has joined too.” I gesture my tail to point at the far flashes of light in the distance. “How’s Bright Moth?”

“She’s fine. Just getting all frantic about the storm…” I grinned as I turned back to look at the sky. “This is one of the biggest storms I’ve seen in a while. And it holds the scent of water with it. But not rain. Flood.”

“Are you good, staying out here alone? If there is a flood?”

“Yeah. I like the feeling of the cold rain on my fur. It cools my pelt down. I’ll be fine. Go inside with Mother and Brother.” I say as I shake off drops of water from my head. I hear Father go back to the den. A few moments later, another shout of thunder was heard all over the valley, quickly followed by a bright flash behind me. My family rushed out of the den as I saw the earth around it explode from the lightning.. My Mother and Father were frantically carrying my Brother out of the den. “He got hit by the lightning. I think he’s dying…” My Mother’s howl was swept away by the rush of water and thunder. “You have to go far, Night Runner. Get away from this place!” Twisted Thorns yelled, picking up my Brother again. I stand still. I hear a rush of water. The flood. It will kill us all. Suddenly, my father grabbed my scruff and dragged me onto high ground. “NO! Please…” I howl to him, but he only looks sadly at me. The earth broke, struck by lightning. The flood came in waves, destroying everything in its path. I watched in horror as the waves swept up my family and tossed them around. The earth broke as lightning struck the water and I yelped as a shock went through the water and electrocuted me. I felt a fire blaze in my chest and around me as my paws stung, and the water swirling toward me from the flood was turning red.

Blood. The blood from my family and pack.

All of them. They're all gone. Just gone.

I turn away, knowing that I can’t save them. Any of them.

CHAPTER TWO

I slunk through the forest as the sun set. My paw-pads hurt from walking all day, especially when I had to avoid the water and broken earth. I was miles away from my territory now, and there were mountains surrounding me.

I sat down under a large oak tree and sighed. I needed food if I was going to live alone. I shook my head slowly, and dirt flew from my pelt. I’ll hunt in the morning. I look up once more at my surroundings before curling up at the root of the tree and falling asleep. In my dreams I replay the flood over and over again, watching my family die. When I wake in the morning, the sun is barely over the horizon, and I feel like I got no sleep. I stood up and stretched my legs.

Oh well. Guess I’ll have to make the most of it… I sigh and trot away from the tree, testing the air. There was a rabbit a little west of the tree. I padded through the sun-filtered forest as I followed the scent trail. It led to a rabbit warren.

An occupied one. I scout around for a back entrance. Finding one at least 50 feet away from the main entrance, I hold my breath and rush in. I follow the large tunnel underground, and I follow the rabbit with it. I hear other rabbits bolt into other tunnels, but I stay with my target. I see light, and I’m back outside. I still follow the rabbit, and when I’m ready, I launch myself at it. I catch my teeth on its shoulder, and I drag it towards me. I look at it for a moment, then sink my teeth into its neck.

My kill. My food.

I picked up the rabbit in my jaws and jogged back over to the oak tree. I lay back down and dropped the rabbit at my paws. I looked at my surroundings more. I was in a dense pine and oak tree forest, with a few clearings and mountains. I heard a river rushing somewhere, and the breeze was flowing. This could be home for me. I bent my head to eat the rabbit, watching for predators. When I finished the rabbit I looked up at the mountains. Suddenly I heard a howl near the top of one of the mountains.

A wolf. Howling.

I hesitate. It could be a stranger wolf, or a pack wolf about to chase me off. I shake my head. I need a pack. I raise my head and give a loud and strong howl. I hear the wolf howl again. It’s guiding me to them.

I get up and stretch. It’s a long way to the top of the mountain. The wolf howled again, and I made up my mind: This is my territory now. I’ll protect it with my life if it means dying. I trotted out from under the shade of the oak tree and began to run towards the mountain. There was a long, skinny path that led up it, and I leaped over rocks as I climbed the path. The wolf howled again, and after a few moments, I saw the wolf. A fire-red eyed male wolf with a smokey gray pelt and jett-black paws and muzzle.

“Hello Night Runner.”

I stare at him frozen.

“H-How do you know my name?”

“Because I was there when your pack died. And when you were a pup.”
“What?”

“The fire.”

I trace my mind for fire. I know the storm was only yesterday, but I kept the memories in the back of my head. I remember.

The burning sensation I felt when the water electrocuted me. It felt like fire.

“Who are you?”

“Haven’t you guessed?”

I study the wolf. Fire-red eyes, smoke colored pelt, black paws and muzzle…

“Kestrel?”

“Took you long enough.” He sat down and cocked his head.

“Why is one of the ALPHAS here?”

“Why not? Ashani, Kalypso, and Apollo were here. They brought that storm.”

I sat down. “Why are YOU here? Why did you come back?” I remember back to when I was a pup. How a smokey gray wolf had been like a shadow to me when I began my training. I saw him everyday, watching me. Making sure no one hurt me. Kestrel was like a guardian to me. Finding out that he was related to me. That he had the power of fire in his veins and paws. Until a forest fire made my pack move territories. That was the last time I saw Kestrel.

“Because. I broke free from the fire.”

“Broke free??”

“Yes. It kept me there. Away from you. So I couldn’t protect you. I couldn’t keep your family from dying.”

“It’s weird, being related to one of the great Alphas. Especially the Fire Alpha.”

“How so? You could have fire powers.”

“What?!”

“I don’t know, just a thought.”

I sat down, stared at the ground, closed my eyes and concentrated.

“What are you doing…”

I hear Kestrels' voice behind me.

“Shut up. You said I had fire power. Let me concentrate.”

“I said you could have fire power.”

“Well, if I could, then I do.”

Kestrel rolled his eyes and sighed as he sat down. “Fine,” He grumbled, “Focus on anything, like a rotten log.” He gave me a hard stare.

“What?”

“Don’t set any trees on fire or else there will be another forest fire. Try finding a rotten log somewhere.”

I shrugged and padded back down the slope. Opening my mouth, scenting the air for trails I could follow. Picking a rotten stench west of me, I trotted into the forest with Kestrel behind me.

The forest was growing dark, and the light and smell of the fire would both enable them to see, as well as having the smoke keep away unwanted guests. I was sitting in a clearing with the moon overhead. The stench of rotten plants was flooding my senses, but I held my concentration. My paws felt hot, but I didn’t know whether that was from the fire or just my blood pulsing through my veins.

I heard Kestrel behind me. “Maybe try putting your paws on the log?”

He had been giving me useless advice for the past hour.

“Shut. UP.” I growled, and I felt a flame spark on the wood. Kestrel stared at me.

“‘How did you do that.”

“I don’t know, I did it though.”

I backed away from the fire as it got bigger. More wolves began howling at the full moon as the moon rose. After a few hours, Kestrel had fallen asleep and the fire had died down. I curled up tighter as the moon crossed the sky. I closed my eyes, and, with time I drowsed off.

The sun burned my pelt when I awoke the next morning. Kestrel was just walking into the clearing with a rabbit dangling from his jaws. He padded over to me and dropped the rabbit at my paws.

“Morning.”

I yawned and jabbed my paw at the rabbit. “Morning. I see you already went hunting.”

“Yep. Caught a few rabbits. There’s more if you want some when you’re done.”

I smile and shake my head. “Nah. I was already used to not eating a ton in the pack.”

“Was hunting bad?” He cocked his head.

I shrug. “No. Just bad hunters.” I bend my head to eat the rabbit, tearing meat from bone.

“Didn’t you hunt?”

“No. I was a guard for patrols. A fighter.”

“Oh. But you know how to hunt?” Kestrel cocked his head in confusion.

“Yeah? Anyone from my pack was trained in all skills until our ranking day.”

“Huh…” Kestrel nodded his head slowly and sat to eat his rabbit.

“What?” I ask Kestrel as I see his gaze raise to the sky.

“We need to go. Now.”

“What?!”

“Another flood storm is coming.”

CHAPTER THREE

I looked up instantly. Sure enough, the sky was already growing dark and the scent of flood was near. I stood up and tossed the remains of my rabbit into the frozen brambles around the clearing.

“Where should we go?” I say, looking at Kestrel warily.

“Away from the storm. Far. We need to go North.”

I trotted around the clearing. “Then let's go. What are we waiting for?”

“Him.”

I look up. A dark wolf with starry wings is running through the sky towards us. “Is that-”

“Kalypso? Yes. He’s going to take us to his realm.”
“He’s going to take us WHERE?!”

“My realm.”

I whip my head around to look at Kalypso standing with his wings folded behind me.

“We’re going to my realm. It’s safe there.”

I sit down and swish my tail thoughtfully. We would be getting farther away from the storm, and in Kalypso’s realm, the storm wouldn’t even be able to reach us. “Okay. We’ll go to your realm.”

Kalypso nodded and crouched on the ground, spreading his wings.

“We better get going then. The storm will come quickly.”

I cock my head, but understand almost instantly: Kestrel and I have to get on Kalypso’s back.

I shrug and pad over to Kalypso and stop. “Uh… how am I supposed to get on your back?”

Suddenly, Kestrel grabbed me by the scruff and placed me onto Kalypso’s back, hopping on himself.

“Hold on tight. It’s a bit harder to fly with others on my back.” Kalypso grumbled and jumped into the air.

I stood crouched and squinting on Kalypso’s back as the wind ruffled my fur. We had taken two breaks that night, one to rest, and the other to hunt. Now, the forest had become pine, and the breeze was cooler. Kestrel had fallen asleep again, and I had to sit on his paws to keep him from falling.

“We’re nearly there.”

I hear Kalypso’s voice from below me. I look towards the ground and watch the move quickly past and see a dark pit emerge from the growing fog.

“That’s the entrance to my realm.”

We circled the pit for a while, trying to find a place to land. I kept looking in it, trying to see the bottom with no success.

When we had finally landed, the air was cooler, and I had to fluff my fur out to keep me from shivering.

“Is it winter or something?”

“Yeah. Though snow rarely gets over here.” Kalypso sat down and shook his pelt free of Kestrel. Kestrel moaned softly and rolled off of Kalypso’s back, blinking open his eyes.

“Are we there yet?”

I rolled my eyes at Kalypso. “Yes. Now get off your butt so we can go.”

Kestrel scrambled up and flashed his gaze towards Kalypso. “Okay, okay. I’m awake now.” He looked into the pit, shivering. “How are we supposed to get into your realm, Kalypso?” He teasingly glared at the black wolf.

“You jump. Or get pushed in.” Kalypso grinned and head-butted Kestrel into the pit. Kestrels yelp echoed through the pit as he hit the bottom.

“A warning would’ve been nice!”

I shake my head, looking at Kalypso. “I can jump in myself.” And ran to the edge of the giant hole and jumped in.

The darkness swallowed me, and a musty scent replaced the sweet and fresh scent of pine from the forest above. I hit the ground next to Kestrel, surprised to feel no pain, but a soft, cushiony surface under my paws.

“Pine needles. And dried grass.”

Kestrel spoke as my eyes adjusted to the dark. He was staring at the entrance of the pit, which seemed only more than a small, white dot above our heads. A dark shadow was circling over us, but its yellow eyes told me that it was Kalypso.

“We couldn’t have just ridden down here?!”

“Nope. You have to go the special way.”

Kalypso smiled at Kestrel as he passed by. “Follow me.”

I looked at Kestrel as we followed Kalypso through dark, musty tunnels.

“Use your tail fire as light.”

Kestrel slowed down. “Forgot I had a tail. Much less any kind of power, especially fire.”

I smile and trot closer to the Dark alpha, who had his purple-and-black dragon wings folded tightly beside him

“Were you born with wings? Or did they come with the power?”

“I was born with the power. So I was born with wings.”

“What did your parents think? Or your pack?”

“Didn’t have any.”

I stare off into space for a while. “What happened?”

“The first thing I remember about my life was waking up in the middle of the forest with wings.” Kalypso spoke without looking at me, his eyes flashing everywhere for signs of other wolves.

“Does anything live down here? Besides you?”

“You’ll find out soon enough.”

“Hey guys…”

Kestrel growled behind me. “What?”

“There’s a big, purple and blue bird with creepy eyes following us.”

I whip around to see a big, majestic dragon-like animal staring at us.

“Kestrel, hats a dragon, not a bird.”

“It has wings.”

“So does Kalypso, and he’s a wolf.”

Kestrel glared at me teasingly and followed Kalypso towards the dragon. Its blue eyes stared back at us as it came closer to Kalypso. It laid its head on the ground.

“This is my dragon. She helps make sure there are no wolves here that aren’t supposed to be here. She was just following you because she thought you were intruding. Though I’m surprised she didn’t pick up Kestrel as one of the Alphas.”

Kestrel stepped back quickly as the dragon picked up her head and looked at him. It purred-growled at him before looking back at Kalypso. It sat down and cocked its head.

“I have others, with other powers. Moon Chaser-” Kalypso pointed his tail at the dragon, “-Has my power.”

Kestrel looked at Kalypso sharply.

“You have my dragon?!”

“Yeah…”

“But it’s my dragon.”

“It has been here for centuries.”

“Where is it?”

“I’ll show you in a second. You two can ride on Moon Chaser. Where the dragons live, it’s a deeper pit than the one you fell into.”

I had to cling on to Moon Chaser with my claws to stop myself from falling off. Kestrel was behind me, his eyes squinted as he looked for dragons.

“They won’t be roaming outside their caves. They like to stay away from wolves. Well, except the ones that share a power with one another.”

“What is that…”

I look up to see a glowing creature flying towards us, spiraling through the air. It was yellow, orange, and red, like fire. “I think that’s your dragon, Kestrel.”

“Mhm…”

The dragon came right up next to Moon Chaser and nudged Kestrel, making him slip and scramble off of Moon Chaser.

“Hey!”

Kestrel yelped as the dragon picked him by the scruff and swung Kestrel onto his back. I look at Kalypso. “Does he have a name?”

“Whatever Kestrel names it.”

Kestrel was staring at the dragon in shock. “You could have just let us get on the ground before you came to me, idiot!”

“He needs a name, Kestrel.” I smiled teasingly at him as he scolded his dragon.

“Umm…” He stared confused at the glowing dragon as we continued to spiral down the pit that led to the dragons’ nests.

The bottom of the pit was not dark, but almost as bright as day.

“Names… Names… Names…”

“Name him something that has to do with fire.” I say, padding up to Kestrel.

“I’m trying…” He mumbled, cocking his head at the dragon.

“Flame Catcher?” I look at Kestrel as he cocks his head at me.

I smile and nod my head in agreement as we continue our way to the dragon’s cave. Moss was scattered all over the floor and there were claw marks on the cave walls.

“How many dragons live here?”

“Oh, many. They have a whole other kingdom underground. This is just where the Alpha’s dragons live.”

I shake my neck fur, dust flying out of it.

“Where do we stay?”

“Follow me.”

Kestrel shrugged at me and followed Kalypso.

The cave had grown to a tunnel, and in some cases we had to crawl through them.

“How much longer?” Kestrel whined as he squeezed out of the small tunnel as we entered a sunlight, mossy clearing with lichen dangling overhead.

“Technically, we’re already here.”

“What?” I panted, noticing the drop at the edge of the clearing. “Are we going to jump?”

Kalypso smiled. “Yes. And we should let the greatest alpha of all go first.”

I grinned and glanced at Kestrel.

“So, you’re first. Unless you want us to push you instead-”

“I’m good!”

“Then go.”

Kestrel rolled his eyes playfully and stepped forward. He placed his paw in front of himself, his paw floating mid-air. He let his weight onto it, and yelped as he fell face first into the dragon’s kingdom below us. A minute later he flew back up on Flame Catcher, who was smiling eagerly.

“Well then, if you don’t mind I’ll go.” Kalypso cocked his head at me.

I nodded my head, and Kalypso spread his black-and-purple wings, jumping into the wind. I shook my neck fur and narrowed my eyes, padding close to the edge. I took a step back, and thrust myself forward with my back leg, falling through the air. A black and red dragon flew out from under me as I landed on it.

“Hi!”

I look up to see a black wolf with white spots and aqua eyes. “Hi?”

“I’m Spirit. This is my dragon, Hondo. I could show you where you’re going to be staying for a while; Kalypso is showing Kestrel around the Dragon arena I assume…”

“Uh…” I stare down, wondering how far it goes. I shook my head. “... Sure. What do you call this place?”

“The Underground Aerie.”

Thin Ice Part 1

The black wolf ran silently through the forest, pushed by the threatening
voices. But as the voices died down, the wolfs' violet eyes softened. "That was a little too close, Wander." The black wolf muttered, turning back to the way she was running and trotted, nose to the ground. Wander weaved through the tall trees until she found a small den hidden amongst the roots of a huge ash tree. "Home sweet home." The human bag that was around her neck swung in the midnight air. "Should probably put that in safe keeping..." She opened the small flap, pulled out a deep red crystal, and hid it in the den. "Hm..." Wander frowned as she looked at the empty food pile. "Should probably go hunt..." Wander backed out of the den and sniffed the air. "Rabbit... deer...." she said silently, finding the scent of many animals. "Eh, I don't need a lot. Now where is that rabbit..." Wander said as she trotted out of her small camp, following the rabbit scent.
She followed it until she smelled faint coyote. "Coyotes....." She whispered, creeping closer. "Don't mind f I just hear what you're saying..." She smirked, her ears pricked. ".......You have come for your next target. This one may take a while. It is a wolf, like yourself, who has been spotted in my territory. Kill it, and bring it to me......" Wanders' eyes stretched wde. "Shit! Thats me!" She hissed thrugh her teeth and ran back to her camp. "They're going to find the gems!" Wander grabbed the human bag, stuffed her belongings in it, and whipped around to smell another wolf scent.
"Dam it!" She whispered, crouching in an attack stance. "Here to kill me, eh? Try me!" Wander bared her teeth, her hackles raised. "What did I do to make you want to kill me? You're not even one of those slinking coyotes!!"Wander rolled her eyes as the wolf talked. "Well DUH you're not a god! And why would you let Coyotes push you around?" Wanders eyes flicked from his tail to his head to his haunches. She would not let this wolf escape without a scar. Or two.
She bared her teeth. "Ha! You think they are gods? Do gods torture their subjects to do what they want? Whats your name, coyote praiser." Wander spat out the words. "Those coyote are the opposite of gods!" Wander smirked. "Oh, I get it. They brain washed you." She smacked her paw hard against his nose. "They tortured you until you thought they were great and mighty. But, in reality, they just use others to do their horrible deeds." Wander followed him, turning. She crouched, looked at his paws, and jumped on his back, making him fall over and go onconsuis. "Well, that was easy." She smirked and dragged him into the den. "Now what to do with you..." Wander said as she parted his long, ash colored pelt to look at the scars.
"Yup. They tortured him. Might as well try to heal him a bit." Wander said as she grabbed one of the crystals. She began murmuring words that were a different language. The crystal glowed, and the wounds on the wolf vanished. "There. He should be waking up soon." She looked out of the den. It was past sunhigh. Wander turned around and began putting everything that was n the bag back in its place. After a few minutes, a rustle from behind made her tur. The wolf was awake. "Oh, good. Your awake. Now you can tell me why you wanted to kill me earlier!" Wander didn' look up from her work as the wolf talked. "For your information, I was here first. The coyotes chased me out of my camp, which they call their own. They said I should leave their territory, even though it is still MINE."
Wander looked at the wolf. "I'll ask you again. What is you name? I mean, you MUST have one." She cocked her head. She rolled her eyes and taunted, "Ooh, Killer! Im SOO scared!" Wander turned and walked to the entrance f the den. "It's still my territory. I hunt on it, live in it, do whatever want with it. The coyotes just say it's theirs. I had to kill one of them to show that its still mine. But that in the only crime I've done. the coyotes just hate everyone." She looked thoughtfully at Killer. "Why do you call them gods?" Wander shoved her muzzle into his face, her paw pressed to hs neck.
"First off, they are the OPPOSITE of gods! Second off, its MY territory!" She raked her claws against his neck, making it parshly bleed. "Now, Why do you call them GODS!" She yelled at him, her eyes slits. "Exactly! The use you! What kind of god uses its praisers? Do they have powers? WHat do they do for you? Torment you? Torture you? Brainwash you? Think about it!" Wanders' eyes flashed. "You know what, do what you want with the territory. I'n leaving this dumpe." Wander put the crystals into her bag and trotted out of the den. She sniffed the air, looked around, annd started walkng east.
"Oh would you SHUT UP! Do you want them to carry you back to your stupid home, just so they can torture you? Good bye!" Wander said, turning tail, and trotted off into the trees.Wander walked through the trees, her head held high and her tail swishing from side to side.
Wander rolled her eyes and turned to the ash wolf. She pulled a dark blue crystal out of the bag and began murmuring strange words again, until the wolfs' breathing calmed and went back to normal. The cuts on his chest and body slowly dissapeared. "Better?" Wander put the crystal back and turned to leave. "Well, are you coming or not? Your gods won't be happy when you go back empty-pawed." Without waiing for an answer, she padded into the forest and began running through the trees, sniffing the air for prey. Wander tried to push the thoughts back but couldn't. He'll die without you. The voice said. Wander anrrowed her eyes with frustration and turned back to find the wolf. "Wait! It doesn't matter if I hate you or not. You're still a wolf. And I'm not letting you go back there to die." She sat down stubbornly, showing that she would change her mind. Wander jumped on the wolf, and growled, "You're walking into a deathtrap! I didn't know wolves could be so DUMB! If you go there, you'll die. Atleast say that you chased me off or shreded my body to bits and couldn't bring it back..." wander said thoughtfully, standing back.
Wander cocked her head. "You sure you don't have a name? Mines Wander. Named by myself." Wander puffed her chest fur out. Wander looked at him. "Hm. Well, I'm gonna give you a name. Killer is just wrong." She studied him for a bit as he walked away. "You look like some sort of bird or something. Like a hawk." She swished her tail. 'Whatever. Don't die!" She called after him, and trotted into the undergrowth. She was going to follow him. She walked up to him. "Two or three, I think. Why?" She cocked her head, and more words throbbed in her mind. Follow him. You can save him. She wanted the voice to leave, but it wouldn't.
wander looked away. "Don't die, Hawk." She smiled when she said his name, it felt good, calling him something besides Killer. She smiled wider when he said his name. "Look at that. You remembered your name! I think mine used to be Swift, before the lightning..." Her voice drifted off as she remembered the smell of smoke, fire, ash, and blood, A lot of blood. She shook her head. "I'm still comiing with you. No matter if those coyotes are gods or not, I'll kill them to save... anybody." Wander said, saving herself form saying 'you'. Her ears pinned to her head. "I've killed them before. I can do it again. I why do you want me to kill a wolf pack?" She wanted to sit next to him, wrap her tail around him.
"...Fine. But if you're in trouble, I'm going to fight. I don't care if I get hurt. I'll fight." Wander sat down, reached into her bag, and took out a crystal. "This one will give you power. Don't fight it." She began murmuring more words, and the crystal glowed. Wander bowed her head. "I'll get you out of there. I promise." Wander said, and she knew that she never took promises back. I promise. She stepped closer to him, hesitated, and put her ehad in the crook of his neck for a heartbeat. "don't die." wander pulled her head back, fighting the tears. She didn' t know why she was crying. "Yes, Sparrowhawk?" She felt a tear slip away. She didn't want to lose him. She didn't want to lose the oe wolf that she thought cared about her. That she cared about. "What is it?" She dipped her head and let more tears fall. "I-I..." Wander couldn't. She couldn't leave him to be ripped apart.
She pressed harder to him. She knew he would try to change her mind. "But.... I can't...." She looked up at him, the tears flowing like rivers from her eyes. "I don't want to...." She whispered, her nose touching his. "I'm not losing someone again. Not like I did my family with the lightning. Or the flood. I can't. I-" She couldn't talk. Her voice was stuck in her throat. All the words she wanted to say, possibly never to be spoken. "I'm not losing someone again." She repeated, her mouth gaping open, but no words came. Finally, after he talked, the came. "F-Fine... but I'm going to get you after hey leave. I won't leave you there to rot in that horrid place." She stepped closer to him, and buried her face nto his pelt. "I love you too." She looked at him, scared. When he yelled, she jumped away, brushing the tears with her tail. She jumped into the undergrowth, hiding the white streak on her side. She was pratically invisible in the shadows. She made her face into a snarl, as if she hated Sparrowhawk. Which of course, he meant the opposite to her. She crept deeper into the shadows, hiding her scent.
She crouched, and waited. When the coyotes had gone, she whined. She had to follow him. She snuck through the brush, following the scent trail. She followed it back to her old camp, where Sparrowhawk and a black coyote stood. "You promised you would only watch..." She whispered, waiting nervously for the scene to unfold.
Wander winced as he spoke. He changed his voice, it was now plain, unlively. Please say the right thing, please... She thought, digging her claws into the ground. She wanted to go down there, but she knew he would never forgive her if she sacrificed herself. "please..." She whispered.
Wander watched silently as the black coyote snarled at Sparrowhawk. She watched as the black coyote left and trotted out of the camp, nose in the air. Wander crept farther away from coyote, her scent behind her and the coyote pack infront of her. She watched the coyotes jump at him, taunt him.
You promised not to get him until they left.... She knew the voice was right, but it felt wrong. Watching him basically die. The coyotes snapped at him, and he didn't dodge them. She winced when one of the coyotes locked its jawed hard on Sparrowhawks' shoulder. She watched as another one grabbed hard on his ankle. The tears flowed like river as she heard his tormented scream. "He would never forgive you if you went down there now..."
She stared as he laid down and the coyotes triumphed and left to find their leader. When the coyotes were far enough away, she rushed into the clearing and buried her nose into his fur. "I've got to get you back. Somewhere safe..." She whispered, carefully grabbed his scruff, and dragged the limp body into the hidden forest.
She dragged him to a small clearing that couldn't be seen from the eye of many. She still had her bag, but she didn't know if the crystals would work. All Wander wanted to do was bury her muzzle into his pelt and wonder what it would be like without the coyotes. But instead, she grabbed a white crystal and murmured the words her mother taught her. The wounds minored, but didn't go away. It would take much more healing power than what she knew to fully heal Sparrowhawk. Wander laid down on her paws and breathed a sigh. "Oh Sparrowhawk...." She didn't try to stop the tears. She wanted to howl, but the coyotes would find her. zInstead she curled up next to Sparrowhawks limp body, buried her muzzle into his neck fur, and cried. She cried even after the sun fell over the horizon and the forest went silent. Then, Sparrowhawks whole body shivered. His stomach began rising up and down. She gasped in relief. She began licking the scars on his muzzle and eyes and back, tears still flowing from her eyes.
"I thought you were dead...." She said, barely a whisper. "I-I couldn' leave you alone. The coyotes, they left." She stopped licking him. "where does it hurt the most? I tried to use the crystals but..." She stuttered out the words, unable to speak.
She was in awe at how he was still alive. She grabbed the crystal, surprised to see it still glow. She placed it next to Sparrowhawk and murmured the last to verses of the ancient spell. She winced as his body shook, but was grateful when the scars seemed to disapear to more that a mear sliver. "Better?" She asked, laying her head on her paws, her eyes wide with concern. "I cna't do anything about your leg... But I might be able to help you sit up.." She cocked her head, unsure. "I'm definetly no healer, but you wn' e able to walk for almost two weeks...." Wander loooked at the sky. The moon had gone and the sun was starting to rise. "We will be safer back at the den though... Can you walk on three legs?" She asked, her eyes giving away her doubt.
"I think we'll stay here tonight... Maybe you'll feel a bit better in the morning. I should hunt, but the coyotes..." She frowned, her eyes sparkling with fear. "You should rest. I'll keep watch for anything." She finally said, sitting tall.
"I can fight. Kind of trained myself when I lived alone, after my family died. Hunting helped, and so did killing the coyotes. Rest." She said, brushing her tail softly under his chin. "You need it." She walked around him until she was wrapped around him. "It's okay. I'll keep watch." She pricked her ears, listening for danger. She watched as the leaves above them slowly moved with the wind.
The sound of a bird made her lift her head higher. She got up and ran over to it, batting it out of the air and swiftly killing it before it made a sound. She walked over to Sparrowhawk, tail wagging, and set the bird infront of his nose."I didn't even leave the clearing. It didn't make a sound when I killed it. I might be able to catch another." Wander tilted her nose to the air and searched for a scent of prey."Yeah, but that goes close to where the coyote den is. I wouldn't risk it..."
Her ears swiveled when a rusle came from behnd. Rabbit. She gave the chase, zig-zaging through the tall grass, pouncing neatly on the rabbit. She killed it with a nip to the neck. "we can share this too." She laid down, curling herself around him. "Rest. We can move to the den tonight. There will be no moon, so nothing will see us. Rest." She repeated, resting her head on his shoulder, licking the long scars. Wander shot up when she heard the yowls. "I'm going to drag you. Your scars are dry, so no blood should make a trail." She grabbed his scruff and bolted into the treeline. She waeved through the brush, her scent hidden in the pine. "There is an abandoned farm north of here."
She winced and mumbled, "Sorry!" When Sparrowhawks' head hit a stone and tree stump. She trotted through the forest until a red, faded human den apeared. "The coyotes don't even know this exsists." She said as she dragged him into the barn. The sandy floor of it was soft, and Sparrowhawk would be able to rest here. There was also a lot of straw that could be used. "It's safe. There is also a den behind the barn if we need to hide." She looked at the sky. "It's getting late. And you still haven't rested." She gave him a joking-stern stare, quietly laughing. "I'll take care of your wounds. Then I'll sleep."She walked over to him,Curled around him, and licked the scars on his body. The stars began to appear in the sky, and with them, sleep found Wander.

TWO WEEKS LATER
She felt Sparrowhawk nudge her and she pawed him playfully. "Okay! Okay! I'm up!" She said, laughing. She got up and licked him back, shaking the sand from her fur. "Of course they'll love you. You're their father." She got up and stretched. "You know, I could do with some food..." She gave him a hinting stare, whicch said, Go get food. Now. Wander walked around the barn, her nose in the air with a butterfly on it. She whipped around when Sparrowhawk called. He had fod. "Thanks! I haven't eaten since yesterday!"
She trotted over to her mate, tail all wag. She licked his head to calm him. "Remember, you can do as you wish now. You're free." She picked up the mouse and mumbled, "Thanks for the mouse!" Before trotting over to her hidden nest in the haystacks.
She turn a few times before sitting down. She looked at her mate and smiled. "Thanks! It's already autumn and soon winter. It will be getting colder soon." She took the feathers gratefully, put them in her nest, and curled up tighter. "I'm going to lay here for a while. It's already getting cold out there." Wander curled up tighter in her nest, letting sleep overtake her.
ONE MONTH LATER
Wander lay curled up around three, small pups. One was black with gray markings, one was dark gray with a white muzzle and tail, and the other was all black, except for its stomach, which was gray. She lay with her head up and her ears pricked. Winter was half way through, which meant the pups stayed by their mothers side all the time. Wander looked up at Sparrowhawk. "How are you?" The pups had been born only that night, and Wander was tired. She nuzzled her mate back. "I don't think so. I'm just tired, thats all. Could you watch them?" She looked down at the pups. The night had felt three times longer, and she hadn't slept in days, thinking about when they would be born. She nosed each one of them, pulling them closer and wrapping her tail around them as the wind blowed fiercely. She snuggled closer to her mate and brushed his neck with hers. She blinked at him gratefully and curled closer to him and the pups. She checked that all the pups were there before laying her head in the soft hay and feathers. She looked at Sparrowhawk one more time before closing her eyes to sleep.
"Run!!!" The voice shoked Wander. I was her mothers. "What?" She said, then she remembered: This was when her parents died. From the lightning and flood. She felt the water wrap around her paws. pulling her. Making her fall. "No!" She yelled, then a big crash heard above. Lightning. The most dangerous near water. She found higher ground, away from the water. She sat and watched in horror as the lightining crashed down exploded the earth beneath her and her family.
Wander finched and woke up with a start, panting. She shook her pelt and looked at Sparrowhawk. "I keep having the nightmare. About the lightning..."
