Two of my wolves have died so far. The second died today, just a few minutes ago. I noticed his paws up count was zero. I'm pretty sure he had a couple paws up before his death. Does the count reset when they die? If so, why is that? It doesn't really make much sense.

Yes. It does reset. I'm unsure of the exact reason, but this also happens when a wolf leaves your den if you sell it.
Since a wolf leaves your den when it passes away and goes to the game account, The Heavens, the game considers it leaving your den to go to another user, even though it happened through the wolf passing away and it's not actually a users account. Ah, I see. That kinda stinks a little, it'd be nice if paws up could be preserved when a wolf passes away, but it's definitely not something that should be prioritized.
