Name

Sonny O’Shea

The Voice of Ultalla

Age

24

Gender

Male

Background

Scavenger

Sonny originally belonged to the groups of scavengers who made their homes of whatever scraps and trash they could find. These people don’t have much real organization, and most hate the government. They often fight and steal from each other to get by in life, and are known for being dirty and underhanded.

Voice

If there’s one thing everyone knows Sonny for, it’s his voice. It’s smooth and calming, with just a hint of something like an Australian accent despite his bloodlines having no clear race or ethnicity. He never stutters, never stumbles, always seems to know what he’s saying.

Appearance

Sonny’s skin is fairly light, a sort of golden color that’s like toffee, though not quite as vibrant or dark. He has freckles scattered all across his cheeks, nose, shoulders, and arms. He has a distinctive jawline, and smooth cheekbones that curve up to frame his face with high cheeks. He has cupid’s bow lips, a bit pinker than the rest of his skin, His nose, smooth and neither small nor large, is placed perfectly in the center of his face, giving him a remarkable symmetry. His eyes are slightly slanted, almond-shaped and fairly small. His irises are light grey, with just a hint of blue visible, looking like the sky after a storm. They have a certain clarity and expressiveness which most eyes don’t possess. Above them, his brows are dark brown, smooth and well-defined. They sit low over his eyes, and this, mixed with his high forehead, give him an intense expression even when he doesn’t mean to look that way. His hair is dark blonde, with a darker brown towards the roots and a more vibrant gold out towards the ends. This isn’t super noticeable, but gives his hair the appearance of depth. It’s slightly wavy, and goes down to his neck, with the lowest strands just touching his shoulders. He often wears it combed back slightly, a sign of good grooming that’s considered attractive by a lot of people in this most unhygienic time. While other people live with grime coated onto their scalps, Sonny’s hair is soft and loose, catching stray sunlight to show off those golden highlights. He’s clean-shaven at all times.

Every square inch of Sonny is always clean, from his head down to his toes. He has a few scars, yes, as most people do these days, but those are faded and certainly very old. The only prominent scar he has is one down the side of his neck, which doesn’t seem to have healed as well as the others. In this day and age, though, Sonny doesn’t see a reason to be ashamed of a scar. In fact, he carries that scar like a trophy, often turning his head to expose his neck just a little bit, so everyone can see this reminder that he was once just like them. He’s in good shape. He certainly should be, if he wants to get through this. He’s the perfect mix of muscular and lithe, and that’s no mistake. It’s hard work getting a body shape like that, But if Sony lets himself go, he might find that people aren’t quite as interested in him anymore. He’s a fairly short person, especially for his family, who are all taller. He stands at 5’8. He has lean, toned arms and legs, and shorter fingers and toes. His fingernails are neatly clipped back and white-clean, and sometimes he coats them with see-through nail polish to protect them and gives them an extra sheen.

Sonny wears the uniform just like everyone else. He’s been told repeated times that he doesn’t have to, or that they can modify it for him. There are nobles and worldwide corporations that want their family crests or logos on his uniform to get some of the best publicity available. But Sonny wants to make it clear that he’s just like the rest of the recruits. Some people think it’s noble, some think it’s a tactic to gain more support. Some are disappointed to see him looking so plain. Although Sonny tries to stay practical with his outfit, he does have a piece of bling that he can’t do without. It’s something like a ring, but goes over his lower lip, slipping on without requiring a piercing. It’s perfectly symmetrical, and looks very polished despite the variations between extremely thin and thick. The metal is golden. There’s an outer ring, and an inner one which comes together to look something like an H on his lower lip. Into this there’s set a thin line of pale blue agate. When Sonny isn’t in uniform, he’s often doing announcements or attending events. These require him to wear extremely high-quality clothing. Most of his clothes are fairly skintight, with a lustrous sheen to them. A shirt with a V-neck, tight jacket like a slim trench coat, strapped pants, and slender form-fitting shoes are his most common outfit. He wants to appear sleek, and not necessarily tacky. His clothing is usually colorful, but not too bright, and coordinated with only two or three colors to make sure they all work together.

Personality

You’ll see the name Sonny O’Shea all across the barren cityscapes and ragged civilizations, flickering onto holographic life to tell each and every citizen to “keep calm and carry on.” Since he was fifteen, Sonny has been the face of government propaganda, and citizens of the most densely populated areas will recognize his voice in an instant, even if they can’t put a name to it. It takes a particularly magnetic charm to be the kind of figure Sonny is. He’s been carried for most of his life by his good looks and smooth voice. Celebrity status doesn’t exist now the way it used to in days long past, but Sonny is well-known enough to be considered slightly famous. His fan base consists mainly of young women and more young women. Sonny has a shiny, sparkly personality for these people. He’s all big smiles, clever jokes, and casual allure. After all, his whole career is based on these things - and if fans started thinking of him differently, would the government even have any use for him anymore? He knows well there are people who hate him for his role in the government, and he’s learned to be placid, agreeable, and tell them what they want to diffuse a situation. But, truth be told, he’s never been in too much danger from these people. The government protects their own, and Sonny can rely on them to protect him from every street crazy who comes running at him. When a person doesn’t like him but doesn’t pose a threat, he’s only too happy to reciprocate. From full-on snark to the more passive aggressive methods of making sure other people don’t notice when he’s rowing with someone, Sonny has a particularly sarcastic way of dealing with enemies. And it’s not always out of spite, either. When he has the chance, Sonny enjoys trading quips with someone who sees him as an equal. Even when the other person is legitimately pissed off at him, he sometimes enjoys verbally sparring with them. The people he finds most interesting are the ones who seem to legitimately dislike him. Perhaps this isn’t very healthy, but he simply doesn’t meet a lot of people like that, and he finds he can be himself more around people who don’t expect him to act a certain way.

He’s so used to living a life that could be described as glamorous in these trying times that he hardly knows what to do with people who don’t either love or hate him. That is, people who couldn’t care less about him either way. And in this place, he finds that there are a lot more of those kinds of people. He usually ignores them, and when forced to interact one-on-one with nobody else watching, he’s surprisingly awkward and unsure of himself. He needs to know how people feel about him right off the bat. When it comes to personal relationships, if anything isn’t stated outright, he simply won’t pick up on it. He takes people’s reactions to him at face value, and this makes him extremely vulnerable to any form of manipulation. When he actually likes someone, he’s constantly showering them with gifts, favors, and anything else they could ever want. He gives them their privacy, though, mainly because he also needs his alone time. He alternates between wildly clingy and pushing a person away. But Sonny has stayed away from romantic relationships, not because he’s afraid of them, but because it’s always been best for his image to stay single. Every connection he makes with any person has a reason behind it. There are matters of his image to consider, and every single person he meets has to fit his image or he can’t get any closer with them than acquaintances. Scandal is the last thing he wants. This is something he’s never agreed with, but there are sacrifices a person has to make if they want to make a living the way Sonny does.

Before Sonny worked doing propaganda announcements, his family hated the government. They made a quick 180 when they started getting the majority of their resources from the government. Now they want it to be known that nobody is more loyal than them. Sonny might not be as diehard as his family, but he’s still a supporter of the government. After so many years of telling the world that their government is working for them, wants to help them, deserves to be in charge, Sonny can’t help but start believing it himself. This isn’t something he would be easily convinced to change his mind on, but he doesn’t hold onto this dogma as a weapon against the masses. Rather, he thinks those who rally against them are misguided, and he wants them to accept the help of those higher-ups who are only trying to make life better for them. Anything bad he hears about the government doing, he simply doesn’t believe. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t believe people when they say they’ve suffered as a result of the government. He believes they’re telling the truth about what happened to them, but he’s sure somebody has thrown the government under the bus when there’s something or someone else to blame. All the same, having come from a scavenger background himself, Sonny doesn’t discount what people are going through. Things are hard, and he’s lucky to have something to fall back on when most people don’t. Nobody deserves to have to live with things the way they are now. When Sonny was still nothing special, he and his family struggled to survive. And the government saved them, so why won’t other people trust and let the same thing happen for them? There is a certain amount of survivor’s guilt that comes with having escaped poverty while a lot of people didn’t, though. Just bring up his cushy life, the easy way he’s coasted through everything, and you can use that guilt to get most anything you want from him.

Sonny has a natural inclination to help people. Unfortunately, this mostly involves him interfering and bossing people around. He has it in his head that he knows the best thing to do in every situation, and other people only need to listen to him to solve their problems. Sometimes it’s just spewing propaganda, but in personal matters that’s not applicable. Sonny may not be good with his own relationships, but he’s convinced he’ll be good with other people’s. He’s always ready with a bit of advice, sometimes bad and sometimes good. He prefers to solve problems rather than just let people work out their feelings by talking. But he is very generous as well, and he’s always ready to lend a helping hand. He loves being useful to other people, and feeling like they want him around because he’s helpful. He never slacks off, and he never tries to get out of any task he’s set. He’s happy doing basic physical labor and the kind of repetitive work most people find mind-numbing. If someone asks him for help once, he’ll go above and beyond. He likes to take control in most situations, not really trusting other people to lead. He doesn’t do well with following, but doesn’t outright disobey orders and never starts a fight with a superior. He just tends to think of himself as equal with a leader, rather than below them, and he acts accordingly.

People say Sonny got into this program because of his special favor with the officials who run it. Sonny is determined to show that he got here because of his own hard work and talent. He’s not about to accept any help or favoritism, though he’s certain to be polite when he turns it down. His family never took much stock in learning and intelligence, and to Sonny that’s even more reason to pursue it. He has to be better than his family thinks he is. Though Sonny may appear sociable and extroverted, he only has so much patience for interacting with people before he needs some time to himself. He prefers time alone, with nobody watching his every move. When he’s by himself, he has serious intensity and dedication that hardly seem like him. He studies hard and his focus is difficult to break, and he has a remarkable memory. He’s always liked reading, particularly nonfiction books. He’s strong enough to hold his own when it comes to fighting, and willful enough to stay calm in dangerous situations. But his strongest suit is his knowledge. He’s studied every machine and device used on this mission. He’s studied the history of space travel, from the distant year of 1961 all the way to modern times. When he’s interested in a subject, he learns everything he can about it, and this is the most dedicated he’s ever been to any subject. He knows how to make good notes, and he knows every tip and trick for memorization and reading. He’s a very organized person who prefers to have a plan before he jumps into anything. Taking wild risks was never his style, and that kind of danger makes him nervous and discoordinated.

Motivation

Sonny is trying to prove he’s worth more than his voice and looks. He wants to be among the few chosen for this mission, and he wants to do it through his own hard work. He has to make something of himself before the day his allure wears off and he becomes the same nobody he started out as.

Sonny is almost-famous in a world where fame is hardly a thing anymore. His voice can be heard echoing around empty city streets, the government’s way of keeping their masses content and subdued. Those who don’t know his face or name likely know his voice. Some people love him - especially the young ladies. Some hate him. These two extremes are the sort of reactions he’s used to.

Backstory

‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Name

Jackdaw “Jack” Tret

Age

28

Gender

Male

Background

Wilderness

There are some places in the world where people haven’t destroyed nature. Here, wild types of people live. Many are peace-loving and connected with the earth. Jack’s family were nothing of the sort. They were con artists and thieves who targeted those peace-mongers to get what they needed. They lived in isolation in their home in the tundra. It’s not the sort of tundra of olden days, but rather a great marshy piece of land, often chilly but not intolerably so.

Appearance

Jackdaw has naturally dark tan skin, which is rough and calloused from years of surviving out in the tundra. Some patches seem to be darker than others, like somebody did some very inconsistent coloring with him. His face is fairly rounded, with full cheeks and a small chin. He has a smooth face shape, but his face itself is covered in small scars in various states of healing. A scar cuts through his right eyebrow and down near his right eye. He also has a few on his chin, and one on his forehead. He has a fairly small mouth a shade darker than his skin. His nose is large and somewhat flat, with a larger bottom that spreads out. His nostrils are large and visible. He has heavily hooded eyes that give him a lazy and relaxed look. His irises are almost the exact same shade of brown as his skin, a sort of tawny milk chocolate. He has thick lashes and often wears rough, slightly sloppy black eyeliner to make his eyes look more distinct. His eyebrows are thick and black, wild but just small enough not to draw more attention than other parts of his face. His hair is a sort of grimy coal black, without much of a shine except the faint sheen of grease. It’s fairly rough and stringy, but with a slight wave and the way it hangs down past his shoulders, it’s not necessarily horrible. If he took better care of it, it might look very good.

Jack is in extremely good shape, muscular and well-built. He’s buff and has very toned arms, and even more toned legs. He’s typically dirty from some excursion or trouble he’s gotten into, and he doesn’t bother trying to keep himself clean. He’s heavily scarred in different places, and has rough patches all over, particularly on his hands, which are blistered and cracked on the palms. He has jagged, dirty fingernails, and nobody even wants to know what his toenails look like. His shoulders are broad, and he has a thick neck and sturdy midriff. He’s very short, only 5’5”, giving him a particularly stocky build.

Every recruit here is expected to wear a certain uniform. Jack doesn’t go as far as to refuse to wear his uniform, but it feels restrictive to him, and he’s constantly picking at it and forgetting different parts. He often puts things on wrong, and doesn’t seem to care either way. He’s often scuffing up and tearing his uniform, and at some point it stopped being worth it for the coordinators to keep replacing them. Jack’s family made their own clothing, and it was durable and extremely straightforward. What color they did have was usually faded and rather dull, so they would add splashes where they could. Jack is fond of the more loose, comfortable clothing that’s common among the peaceable villages, and now that he’s had the chance he has quite a few of these kinds of clothes. They’re naturalistic and made of old-fashioned and rustic materials that Jack finds help his skin breathe. He likes wearing loose wool or plant-made shirts with long sleeves, pants with a waistband and flowing pants legs, and soft form-fitting shoes.

Personality

When people find out where Jack is from, they expect him to be half-feral and animalistic, some sort of part-human who relies only on his base instincts. And it’s true that he has a bit more of that than most people, but in his opinion, his lifestyle is no less civilized than the collapsed society that others hold in such high esteem compared to his. Only nobles and the highest elite bother with things like manners and traditions anymore. Jack can’t imagine a time when every person worried about hurting each other’s feelings, tiptoeing around to avoid an overwrought misunderstanding. Certainly, Jack doesn’t go out of his way to make other people comfortable at his expense. He doesn’t get embarrassed about the things that make him different from other people, and he doesn’t change because the way he is is offensive to somebody. Living with nobody but his mother and two sisters, Jack didn’t have any reason to pretend to be somebody he wasn’t. And now, in a place that’s so unfamiliar to him, he clings almost desperately to the person he’s always been. He’s so scared that this new place will change him that he makes no allowances, never adjusts his behavior even when it would be better for him and everyone around him.

He’s not outright aggressive. He’s never had reason to be - that was his mother’s role. But he holds onto anything he loves as tightly as he can, and if there’s anything he wants, he can’t comprehend any good reason why he shouldn’t have it. Out in the tundra, things were “survival of the fittest,” and with the competition, he thinks of it as the same. The difference being that back home, he had a group who he relied on, and who backed him up. Here by himself now, he knows he has to find his group. Being self-reliant isn’t something he’s used to, and to become self-reliant would be to change himself. He has his own moral code that he follows religiously, even if other people can’t understand or decipher it. Though he has a certain amount of discipline, it’s intrinsic, and his loyalty isn’t given to just anyone. Jack is impulsive in some ways, but not in the kind of way that gets him into trouble. Instead, he loves not knowing what’s going to happen next, and he lives for the thrill of romance and adventure. He likes to explore, and to take excursions or do activities without any planning. It’s more enjoyable when you just let the day take you where it will. This sense of adventure, mystery, and exciting romance is what has drawn every one of Jack’s lovers to him.

Being around this many people is very unfamiliar to Jack, and he finds it exhilarating. When he lived in the tundra, they would be lucky to find two or three people traveling together. Jack might be able to spend five or six days with them before his family had picked them over and threw them out in the cold again. And when he had the chance, Jack was always eager to have a fling. Maybe he would have wanted them to stay, but what would his mother and sisters have thought if he had said something like that? Now, for once in his life, Jack is surrounded by people of all kinds, people he may know for years and years. He craves their company and attention, and every moment he has, he chooses to spend around people. He has an easy way of being around others, and takes an interest in anything they’re doing, whether he knows anything about it or not. If they want to train, he’ll train with them. If they want to read, he wants them to read out loud to him. If they want to tell him about their grandmother’s arthritis, he’ll be enthralled. As long as they want him around, that’s all he can ask for. He tends to be more touchy-feely than is really comfortable, with people he doesn’t know that much. He takes insults well, and he’s often in a good mood. It’s the people that are most different from him that interest him most. He has a way of latching onto people, and if he wants to be friends with someone, he’s simply going to be. He’s not about to give up. The same goes for lovers. Maybe Jack runs through them a little too fast, but with such a wide array of people to choose from, how could he choose only a few to be close with? Unfortunately, Jack doesn’t trust anyone not to be playing mind games with him, and as soon as he sees any false sign of deceit, he immediately becomes manipulative. He’d rather play them than let them play him. His genuine friendliness and affection can turn sour as soon as he feels threatened.

Jack has two main strengths that aided him in getting into this program. The first is his physical prowess. Jack is in fantastic shape, and he’s extremely strong and good at fighting. He can carry huge weights and is good at physical labor, and he’s healthy as a horse. He’s tough, and he can take pain and injury without complaint. He’s particularly good at hand-to-hand combat, and he always fights dirty, even when it’s not required - or allowed. He’s also very creative. This might not seem to translate to the mission, but his creativity isn’t just in matters of art. He can see situations and problems in a different way than most people, able to figure out creative solutions. He’s a bigger-picture person who can understand the abstract concepts of more solid ideas. He has a certain poetic way of looking at things, and his lifeview was never very practical. His brand of philosophy may not be particularly illuminating or moral, but it makes sense to him, and that’s all he needs from it. He’s never placed much value in items, content to have enough to get by. He certainly finds no use for trinkets like jewelry or little plastic toys. He’ll readily give anything like this away, but he won’t share resources like food or water. This kind of stuff he keeps for himself, only sharing with people he really cares for. In fact, if he didn’t feel he had enough, he might help himself to somebody else’s.

Motivation

It doesn’t seem entirely clear why Jackdaw chose to join this program. He’s said he wanted to get away from his family and meet new people, and he certainly seems eager to get to know everyone. He could just as easily have moved to one of the major settlements for that. Jack hardly seems to be taking this as seriously as everyone else, but he’s still doing very well - which is annoying to the more hard-working members.

Jack isn’t exactly well-known around here. People who know where he’s from tend to think of him as sort of savage and wild. Those who know him better tend to get along with him. He’s a friendly and funny sort of person, and even though he doesn’t seem to work very hard, it’s nice to have someone like him around.

Backstory

‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Name

No. 28481 “Puella”

Age

26

Gender

Female

Background

Hic 1.0

This small town was created as a government experiment. A machine was created to coordinate life here, and the people were given pills to help them suppress their emotions so that they could achieve syncopated peace. The experiment moved too slowly, and was scrapped by the government. A few believers stayed, though, and continued living under the machine.

Appearance

Puella’s skin is light and cream-colored, without too much warmth. It’s fairly clear, though it has some rough spots and small scars. None of the scars are prominent, though, and they don’t seem like battle wounds. She has a square-shaped face with a prominent jawline, and straight cheek lines. She has thin lips and a small mouth. Her nose is rounded and fairly large, tapering down at the end. She has fairly large eyes with visible ducts, and these eyes are a dark forest green. They’re not particularly vibrant, but are deep and the color of a pine tree. She has prominent lids. Her eyebrows are dark and thin but ever so slightly messy, with a few stray hairs. They’re gently curved, and a shade darker than her hair. Her hair is curly and coiled, and is a bit darker than tumbleweed brown. She wears it short, down to her neck, and it bushes out on the sides, voluminous and puffed out. She usually tries it back in a ponytail that sticks out from behind her head. She’s fairly clean, but has a dirty, battered look that doesn’t seem to go away no matter what she does. She looks like a worn-out antique, dusty and sitting on a shelf for many years.

Puella is tall and slightly imposing, standing at 5’10”. She’s fairly thin, but certainly not lanky or stick-like. She's large and slightly elegant, though there's a certain lack of muscles and pallid tint that make her seem weak even though she couldn’t be called stringy. She has sloped shoulders and a short neck. Her fingers are rather long and slender. She has neatly filed nails which have a yellowish crust of dirtiness on them despite her trying to keep them clean. She has very few scars, and her skin is rather soft. In fact, it’s almost too soft on some parts, feeling like the waxy skin of a prosthetic baby doll. She has long arms and legs, and they’re sturdy enough despite lacking any muscle tone.

The uniform is there for a reason, and Puella wears it just exactly how it’s meant to be worn, no adornment or adjustments. In her hometown, everyone wears the same thing. It helps create a sense of unity, and Puella doesn’t value the individuality expressed through clothing choices. There are other, far more important things that make people different. And, more importantly, things that make them the same. Puella wears her uniforms at all times, even when she’s by herself or relaxing. Though she still belongs to her home, it doesn’t feel right to wear her traditional outfit when nobody around her is. She wants to be dressed the way everyone else is. It makes her feel like she’s connected to something bigger.

Personality

Puella’s society values logic above all else, and each person is expected to function off of logic alone. Puella strives for this, just like every person in her community. She learned early on the rules of logic and critical thinking, and she applies them to every argument she has or decision she makes. Options must be weighed heavily to determine what is the best course of action. In Puella’s society, there was very little need for snap decisions, and so this is something she still struggles with. The idea of having to decide something without having analyzed every option paralyzes her with fear. She maintains a serious demeanor, and she doesn’t stand for any goofing around or slacking off. Others can go ahead and ruin their careers - and lives - if they want. Not Puella. She’ll readily ignore everyone around her, including people she’s supposed to be working with, in order to focus on her own work. If people screw something up, she won’t offer them a bit of sympathy. If it affects her directly, she’ll take over and fix the problem while making whoever messed it up feel terrible about themselves. She’s certainly not the most polite person, and she doesn’t seem to understand other people’s feelings very well. She can hurt them without meaning to, and she might not notice until it’s too late to fix it. Puella doesn’t want to do this, but she doesn’t know how to avoid it. And she can’t possibly bring herself to apologize after the fact. That’s something she refuses to do no matter how wrong she is.

The problem with a society like Puella’s is that human emotions can’t be fully quelled. This is what the government realized, and why they gave up on it. A lot of people from Hic 1.0 have emotional problems that they keep bottled up and hidden from everyone else, ashamed of their weakness. Puella’s just as ashamed, and she hates herself for every display of emotion. She has a problem controlling herself, and it may be hard to predict when she’ll have an outburst of emotion. It can be anything: screaming anger, wracking sobs, hysterical laughter. She can rarely figure out what triggers it. Logically, these are gross overreactions, but there’s no controlling them once she starts. Something like this is absolutely unacceptable to display publicly in her culture, and she’ll do just about anything to keep it hidden. As soon as she feels something like that coming on when she's with other people, she flees without so much as a warning. When other people display their emotions, her discomfort is evident. She tries to ignore it, and makes it clear that she doesn’t want anything to do with anyone’s feelings. Sometimes, if somebody is angry at or sad because of her, she’ll try to pawn them off on another person. She doesn’t mind hearing about people’s stories, but if they start to get weepy over it, she immediately shuts them down. Truth is, the emotions of others are felt only too easily by her, and she can’t stand to share something that intimate and meaningful with people.

Puella may come off as cold and unkind, but she does have a softer side that shows when her help is truly needed. She doesn’t want to be anyone's therapist, but if they’re in real danger, Puella is quick to come to the aid of others. Even if it’s not logical. She likes to feel powerful and in control, and when she’s able to do something heroic like that, it’s like she’s some sort of benevolent god. It’s not that she’s proud, really, that she certainly has a hint of that. Rather, it’s that everything in Puella’s life has been carefully controlled. Everything but her. She feels like she’s the only thing standing in the way of her own success, and being able to control her own feelings and impulses is something she’s struggled with for so long. She wants to be the most composed and intelligent person here. She knows it’s what people are expecting of her. To the government who are running this whole operation, her people are nothing but a failed experiment. They’ve never been worth anything, and now is Puella’s chance to show that those few who chose to stay were right after all. And it was only logical for her to join. She was chosen by the Machine, and that’s enough reason for her. Her loyalty is always to her people, and by extension, to the Machine. She trusts in it like a deity, more than she could trust in any fallible human. There’s no comfort greater to her than knowing that something so precise and mathematically has chosen her life path for her. Some people, she knows, would find this kind of life insufferable. Some have told her so, and judge her for the way she lives. But she loves the feeling of knowing what to do and when, and she loves the comfort of a higher being protecting and looking over her. She’s never been much of a leader. She prefers to be told what to do by somebody who knows more than her.

When it comes to conflict, Puella will always counter any argument with the most reasonable response. Having studied critical thinking, she can expertly pick apart arguments and evidence, and she won’t stand for any fallacies. Her own arguments are well-crafted, but she’ll acknowledge when a person has a better point than her, or if they point out an inconsistency in her own thinking. After all, it’s only logical to accept when you’re wrong and grow from that. Fighting certainly isn’t something she excels at, because she can never think fast enough to be able to meet and deflect hits and blows. However, when she does strike, it’s usually devastatingly well-planned. The trick, for her, is to get something in before she gets her ass handed to her. Her town is a peaceful one, and though they may have mock fights and debates to release tension, they never get into real fights. Puella doesn’t start fights, and she’ll try to end them with logic before she jumps into some sort of physical confrontation. Real battles frustrate her, because the constant barrage of physical pain makes it hard for her to think, and she can feel herself completely losing control of the situation.

Motivation

Puella was chosen for a reason, and even if she doesn’t understand it, she knows where her loyalty lies. She’ll do her best, not to prove anything - though maybe that has to do with it too - but because it’s her duty as a citizen instructed by the Machine.
