I suck at backgrounds and I need some tips on how to make them look decent. Anyone got any helpful tips?

Personally, I try and find brushes to help myself out such as cloud brushes or more recently I used a checkers brush to make a chessboard. As always references are needed as with all drawings. I'm not too good at backgrounds myself but I have been working on them so I hope this helps!

It's funny because I've been considering whether or not I should make a background tutorial, and if then, if people would actually be interested enough to look at it... I'm not an expert by any means, but throwing my pennies into the collective pool, so to speak, might help out prospective artists who want to look into doing background works more seriously.
