Ground Zero

It has been a century and a half since the cataclysmic event that wiped out Earth and its inhabitants as they knew it. A multitude of nuclear and environmental crises forced humanity to seek refuge in vast spacecraft. The scientific community clung to the hope of eventually returning home once the thick haze of pollution dissipated from the planet's atmosphere. However, this process proved to be far more protracted than initially anticipated.

Despite deploying drones to survey the conditions on Earth's surface, their capabilities fell short of conducting the comprehensive assessments required to determine its habitability. These small unmanned aerial vehicles encountered unforeseen challenges, including encounters with unidentified extraterrestrial life forms that led to their deactivation.

Scientists speculated that the animals left behind during the mass exodus had undergone significant evolutionary adaptations and mutations in response to their changed environment. The extent to which the world had transformed remained a mystery until a specialized team was assembled to venture back to Earth and evaluate the potential livability of their altered home.

Objective

Ten (More if we need!) individuals from various sectors will be chosen from the volunteer pool to be transported to Earth. A series of rigorous tests and scenarios will be conducted to ascertain their survivability and evaluate the survival rate on the planet's surface.

Upon landing, the participants will conduct meticulous assessments of the air quality, soil composition, and water purity. Subsequently, they will embark on an expedition to establish a camp, documenting every new species of flora and fauna they encounter along the way. The primary objective is to establish a foundational base camp, ready to accommodate additional human settlers and kickstart the process of repopulating Earth once more.

Setting:

To begin, all volunteers are on the ship, which is named Exodus II. The Exodus II is a massive ship that contains everything a human, or a couple thousand, would need to survive in space. It orbits a good ways from the Earth, but the Earth is visible through starboard’s windows. The ship is crisp, mainly all white with shiny surfaces throughout. There are two main hallways. One that leads to and from all residential areas, and one that leads to and from all work areas. All volunteers to go to the ground will meet on the ship’s lowest floor, where all launching vessels are held.

Once on the ground: The Earth and surroundings are not like they once were. Dilapidated buildings and structures stand as mere ruins of what they once were. Fauna takes over in most areas, adapting to its sometimes hazardous environment. It in some ways will resemble the old videos and pictures of Earth, but there is definite, almost terrifying, change. There will be harsh, almost deadly weather conditions (Which I will carry out when needed.) And animal encounters (Also for me to carry out ^_^)

Archer MacMillan

Launch day. Everyone had been preparing for this very day for about one Earth year, after the volunteers were carefully picked and trained as much as they could be. Preparation was everything. "All volunteering personnel must report to the launch chambers in thirty minutes." An almost robotic woman's voice had sounded over the comms.

Archer was taking one last look at the walk he'd taken every single day on patrol. He'd already said goodbye to his mother, who had begged him to stay here on the ship maybe a dozen times. He couldn't see her again, for fear that he would listen this time. He'd already promised Luna that he'd meet her down there, so he didn't have anyone else to wait for.

The launch quarters were a place kept off-limits to all except the operators of the launch ships, which meant engineers knew this place far better than the rest of them. It was odd - the feeling of the normal day paired with the knowledge that Archer may never step foot on this ship again. Hopefully because they were able to set up home on Earth, but there was a strong chance that he could die down there if he wasn't careful.

Probe drones had been sent months ago down to the ground, ensuring the air quality was safe for them. Anything else was nearly up in the air, and that's what they were being sent down for. He sucked in a slow breath, before taking the seat that had a little piece of paper on it that read his name. There was a pack on it that he'd removed first, which no doubt contained all personal items for himself. Everyone got one, just in case they were separated. Now, to wait.

Dr. Luna Asteria

The days, months, and this year had blended together so seamlessly that Luna had almost forgotten what today was. Launch day. The day that they truly found out if they could go back to Earth and actually live there. It was terrifyingly exciting. How much she would find and get to search, what they would encounter... Hopefully nothing deadly. Of course, with radioactive pollutants around every corner, it was highly possible they'd end up running into a Tyrannasaurus sized bee. She shuddered at the very thought.

The launch room was manned with those who were operating this launch, and Archer so far. "Hey, you made it." He said, being pointing to where they had assigned her seat. They'd be briefed once more, then shoved into the earth-bound pod. "Of course. The ground holds mysteries I am not willing to leave unsolved." She smiled, before grabbing her pack and taking her seat.

Jamie Williamson

She was packing up the last bit of the items that she had planned to bring with her. A couple of books to keep her imagination alive, pictures of her family, and of course her animals that she would be leaving behind. Part of her was excited for the new adventure as well as seeing what animals she would be working with. The other part of her held her heart in her throat, worry about how her family would get on without her help or shoulders to carry the weight that she deemed not necessary for her brothers. A soft sigh leaves her lips as she slips the pack onto her back and she looks in the mirror one last time at herself, taking in the stragglers of her hair framing her soft features from working earlier.

Her attire was one of her go to staples, of course she packed the required suit in her pack, but she wasn't going to be walking out wearing that stuffy thing yet. She wanted a few more minutes of her normal life before being part of the team that helped recultivate the Earth. Hugs from her brothers and parents almost pulled the tears from her eyes, however, she held strong telling her brothers to be kind to their mother and help their father when he asked. It was weird being 12-14 years older than them, but she had gotten used to being the protector.

Her booted steps sounded hollow as she walked along the corridor, making her way slowly to the launch quarters. Her own thoughts making notes for plans and designation of areas once they were on the ground. Her meticulous notes from the drones that had been received were included within the mix of items she had packed so that she could reference back at any time. She paused for a moment just outside of the launch door, taking a deep breath when the sound of a small whine from behind her reached her ears.

"Oh...buddy...." She turned around the pick up the white male German Shepherd puppy and cuddled the being close to her. "You knew you couldn't follow me." His dark blue eyes widened at her words, and with a simply response of licking her nose, he knew he had won over going down with them. "I mean, we might need a big, brave, protector."

Jamie hadn't noticed the other two at first, since she was occupied with the now wiggling puppy that was in her embrace. Her eyes moved over the seats, finding her own with a pack, taking a seat before resting the two packs and puppy within her lap. Finally noticing the other two occupants.

"Oh hello there. I am Jamie and this is well.....Raven." The pup nodded his head in prideful approval as he sat very patiently between the two bags. His eyes slowly closing.

Aurelius Alvarez

It seemed that the day had finally arrived. The oh so dreadful day that Aurelius had been fearing from the moment he'd been selected for the mission. He'd actually gotten little to no sleep the night before, his restless mind buzzing with anticipation. However, despite the long and treacherous night he'd spent pondering how long he'd survive on the earth's surface, Aurelius had gotten out of bed that morning with a strange calmness washing over him. He'd brushed his hair and fixed his bed meticulousy just as he would've done any other day before grabbing all of his essentials.
-
His parents had left him with a rather cold goodbye this morning, their lack of concern for his wellbeing evident in the way they kept their distance from him, their gazes distracted, and words unfeeling and terse. While Aurelius would never show it nor admit it, this stung a bit. He'd expected that they'd at least be a little proud of him, especially since this unbelievable situation that he was thrown into was entirely their doing. He didn't expect to survive. No, not even for a second did he ever expect to return home and complete his engineering studies. This was definitely going to be it for him, and somehow that thought terrified him deep down, despite how calm and level headed he felt at this present moment.
-
As Aurelius made his way down the hall, and descended into the launching quarters, his eyes immediately fell on the few people who were already seated. 'So these are the people I'm going to die with.' He thought, feeling a bitter disappointment creep up inside of him. It was such a shame. They were likely very nice and interesting people, and yet they seemed willing to throw their lives away towards a mission that would likely leave no survivors. Or maybe Aurelius was wrong, and none of them had wanted this, much like him. He couldn't be sure, as this was all his own personal speculation.
-
Finding his seat, he looked at the little name written along the chair that awaited him. Removing the bag that was on his seat, he set it by his feet and sat down quietly. He looked towards the others, and wondered if he should greet them, however they already seemed to be in conversation. Feeling socially awkward, he turned his green gaze towards the ground letting out an almost inaudible sigh of resignation. Rummaging into the satchel that he'd brought with him, he pulled out a book and held it up a little too close to his face, in a subconscious effort to shield his face from the others who sat nearby. He kept it this way, despite the fact that he could hardly pay attention to the words within the book, his focus scattered and his thoughts disorganized.

This was it.. The day he had been dreading ever since he agreed to join this likely one way trip to a planet called earth. To see if they could make the planet home. Or to see if it was even the slightest bit survivable for his planet. If not.. well he wasn’t planing on this mission succeeding in the first place. As he woke up, the morning sun indulging his room in a bright glow. However it was the sound of his blaring alarm clock that awoke him. Rolling over and turning it off with a grumble. Why did he have his alarm clock on? He never had it on.. then it dawned on him. This was the day that he agreed to go on a highly likely one way trip to an unknown planet. The only things they knew were from satellite technology they had circling the world. He just needed to keep his head up and not back out. That’d be selfish of him. So he kept reminding himself why he was going on this journey. Changing his path as he knew it.

Clud, clud, clud.

Walking down a white hallway that felt never ending as his mind raced. Anxiety coursing through his veins. Every fiber of his being wanted to turn around. Walk away while he still could. Something about this felt so very wrong. He had to remind himself he was not here for himself. Instead to protect these skilled researchers who had their lives on the line to.. Well he didn’t know their morals. For all he knew they were just doing this to gain publicity. He didn't want to protect people like that. Was he even fit to protect them? He’d try his best, no doubt. But.. he was here because he believed it would fail. He was.. okay yet not okay with that.

So he stopped as machined metal doors opened. As they stopped, wide open he walked into the room. Taking a deep breath as he looked around the control room. His eyes finally landing on the pod that’d take him to the planet earth. “If you are 100% ready please enter the pod Mr. O’reil.” Jason nodded smally, before hesitantly taking a step forward, before one foot after another. Not backing down. He was to far, he couldn’t let them down now. So he walked into the tight pod. Taking a seat in the chair that had his name above it, buckling himself into the seat. A safety professional walking up and checking to make sure he was in the pod tight. He stared off forward as the man took a few steps back. Giving a thumbs up to the people in control of the pod. This was it…

———

A young man woke up at 2am much too calmly excited for their departure to earth today. So he sat at his desk, computer on. Doing research into how one plant would do with this liquid. Then one search led to another to where he had stayed awake since 2am and hadn’t been able to fall back asleep. He glanced down, checking the time for the one thousandth time. It was finally 5 am on the dot. Quickly closing down his computer and notebook. Standing up from his desk.

As he heard the robotic female voice tell him to head towards the pod. So he gathered his bags and started on the way there. He was in his massive gray space suit. A name tag reading “Mr. Nicoi”. Levi kept his head forward as he walks to the control room. Stopping at the door and heading in. A small grin etching into his lips.

It took a few minutes for them to get him all situated in the pod. Which confused Levi as they’ve practiced this multiple times. Always making it go faster and easier. So maybe he was having some doubts..
