PLOT SUMMARY:

A lone wolf comes across a pack. Standard stuff, right?

The pack's Alpha is really abusive - impulsive, frequently lashes out at anyone, extremely biased in decisions, you get the idea. Resultantly, many wolves actually capable of things are relegated to the lowest roles - omegas, etc. Sometimes, they legitimately starve to death as the Alpha refuses to give them food.

One of our protagonists are said wolf. Omega, lowest ranking possible, despite actually being capable.

When our loner wolf comes across this pack, it's hierarchy, and everything horrific about it that the pack has gotten used to, what's to say what they wouldn't do?

Here's the characters:

Name - Ada (Short for Adalwolfa, German translation for “Noble She Wolf”)

Age - 3

Gender - Female

Rank - Omega

Desired Rank - Alpha

Scent - Fresh Cut Pine

Loyalty to the Alpha - Ada’s alpha is, in her opinion, the most foul, loathsome, abusive animal in the world. She has no loyalty to him and hopes to be the one to end his reign of terror, or his life. Either works for her.

Appearance - She has rather short fine fur that’s a rusty brown on her chest and ears with gray and white on her snout and tail tip. The rest of her body is dark black with her under belly being a salt and pepper color. Her muscular legs and body are so long they almost seem stretched. Her face is round with fluff, complemented by her long snout. A chunk of her left ear is missing and scars mark her legs, neck and snout.

Personality - Ada gets extremely frustrated when others try to help her or do things for her. She likes to spend time alone, and finds herself going on long runs often. She likes things to be particular, and if they're not, then it’s a problem. Long years of being raised in a bad pack have thickened her skin and built walls around her heart and mind. Ada has learned to be quiet and put up with the bites of others; whether verbal or physical.

Strengths

- Love. Once upon a time Ada had a lover, and their bond was stronger than the mountains. Maybe one day she will be able to take down her walls.

- Hunting. Ada has always been a good hunter, ever since she was a few months old and she was forced to hunt for herself. Her nose and ears have been trained well by long nights of starving.

- Swimming. Occasionally she would have to fish for herself, and this adapted her legs and body well for moving quickly across swift rivers.

Weaknesses

- OCD. Ada has serious trouble accepting the fact that wolves will be wolves, and they will be out of order. She gets super overwhelmed with constant loud noises, and struggles a lot with things being messy or disorganized.

- Her Past. Anytime Ada looks back on what she's done and been through, she shudders at the thought of having to ever go back to her traumatic past.

Mate - There was a day that Ada thought she would have pups. That story ended in the worst of ways.

(Yay we brought back Nikolai, he hasn't had something good to be in for a while lol)

~

Name - Nikolai

Age - 3

Gender - Male

Rank: Loner wolf

Scent - Orange and blackberry, and a touch of grass

~

Appearance -

Nikolai wears a slightly off-white coat that forms a natural gradient along his side to resolve in a light brown that covers his tummy and hindquarters. This continues down his tail to form a black tip of it.
The brown flows down his legs, but abruptly changes to four short gark grey (almost black) socks.
Nikolai's underbelly of light brown continues up the underside of his neck, to stop just below the jawline. Here, his cheeks are a continuation of his off-white coat (which also covers the top half of his neck), but he has a greyish-black cap that tops off his head and his ears.
Nikolai sports dark yellow eyes. Set in his off-white coat, this goes in contrast to the rest of his face.
Nikolai's build is slightly more compact than the average wolf's build. He stands slightly smaller than the average male wolf, which he doesn't really like. Often, his fur will be slightly ruffled, partly due to his personality, and partly due to him wanting to appear slightly larger.

~

Personality -

Nikolai has remarkable stubbornness when it comes to things. Once he's set his mind to doing something, it's remarkably hard to change his mind. This trait has been evident since his early years, and often drove his parents up the wall. This trait isn't as evident as it was before, but is still rather prominent in terms of his personality.
Despite this, he can also be rather socialable. Not to the point of "I'm the coolest in the region and you all know it", but simply being able to have positive interactions with his fellow pack-mates, and viewing them with mutual respect for their abilities - no matter who they are. He has integrity - and loyalty too, for that matter. Nikolai is willing to follow an alpha, or be loyal to, anyone that he believes is doing the right thing. When they're not doing the right thing, however... Nikolai prefers to more or less kind of stand off. Unless it directly affects him (and this applies to much more than alphas), he will just kind of stand off and be the silent observer and judger.
Nikolai, as stated earlier, also often comes with ruffled fur. The first part is his compact build - the second is that due to his compact build, he is more likely to try squeeze through smaller, tighter gaps simply because he can. While a larger, older wolf would have difficulty in doing so, it only gets Nikolai's coat ruffled.
Doing such things has evoked a natural curiosity in Nikolai. He gets curious about the more minute aspects of life, and things he finds along his way. He simply wants to know more of the world around him. This contributes to his appearance, by either usually appearing rufled, or slightly dusty.
However, he has an innate possessiveness of things that he thinks are "his", for example, a sleeping spot that he classifies as "his". This is where many of his main disputes will come around - his stubbornness contributes to the feeling that "this is mine and you can't touch it!" Mainly small trivial things, it rarely slops over into major disputes, but occasionally can.
Nikolai, in terms of standing and mindset, is a very much "in the middle" kind of person. In terms of dominance, he'd usually sit somewhere in the higher ranks, but not enough to garner a special role or position. He's fine just living life as the main pack, but he'd sit somewhere in the higher sections of that role.
And in terms of mindset, he's very... neutral. If the pack wants more progressionism, he'll accept it. If it's more conservationalism, he'll accept it. In terms of progression versus conservation, he sits almost exactly in the center of it - he just doesn't want to get involved in the disputes. He's fine where he is, and with no need to endanger anything by going either side, he's content to sit in the middle - and usually quite unwilling to budge from his position. This may attract attrition from both sides for him, but as long as he doesn't get on anyone's bad side majorly, he's content.

~

Strengths -
- Curiosity. Nikolai is naturally curious about the world, and this trait persists far past his puphood. This is simply something he is naturally doing, andn ot something honed.
- Defending - both mentally and physically. Nikolai is physically capable of defending things that he loves, and is also mentally equipped in verbal battles. While built on the more compact side of things, Nikolai is still able to pack decent punch against things he deems threatening.

Weaknesses -
- Stubbornness. Nikolai is remarkably stubborn (as stated before) when it comes to things. Once he is completely convinced that something is right, it's remarkably difficult to get him to change his mind. He gerenally judges people significantly harder on first impressions, and with a stubborn will, will continue to judge them similarly, despite if they show otherwise.
- Unnecessary (and often trivial) things.
Nikolai, on occassion, will be bogged down in his thinking by the most trivial matters. Rather than accepting it and going on, he will try to find a flaw in it (as his stubbornness shows). When everyone has already moved onto another topic, Nikolai will still be attempting to nit-pick the previous argument, and so on.

~

Other stuff: Uhh... it's modified a bit and I got far too carried away with "editing" the personality sorry >.>

Well, now we shall start.

Ada was fuming. Of course there had to be a rebellious young wolf, no older than a year, who had tried to run off. She had tried to stop him, but being arrogant and saying that an Omega had no authority over him, he had run off and hadn't been back before nightfall. The stupid Alpha had a curfew and any wolf that wasn't in their sleeping spot in time would be hunted down and punished. If it was a normal pack, the punishment would probably only be that the wolf had to help the Omega clean out dens or something. Not that a normal pack would have a curfew. Ada thought, annoyed. But her pack wasn't a normal pack. If a wolf tried to leave the pack, they'd have an ear bitten off. If they challenged a wolf for their rank, they'd end up in an unfair fight, three against one. But the worst punishment of all, was not being back before dark. If anyone caught a wolf out of the den boundaries past sunset, they'd have a real hard time surviving when they got back. The Alpha, (They were forced to call him "Master" or "Alpha" all the time and no one knew his real name.) would hold a fight circle. The accused wolf would be in the middle of a ring of wolves and each wolf would, in turn, take a moment to fight the wolf in the middle. If any wolf hesitated to hurt the wolf in the middle, they would have to join in on being bit and taunted. In this way of punishment, Alpha had ensured that none of the pack cared for or trusted each other.

The young wolf who had tried to escape was called Beetle. Beetle had explained to Ada how, if he ran away, he could run far enough to have his own life, and own pack. He hardly made it a couple miles from the main den before Alpha's most ruthless cronies caught up to him. Just like Ada had told him they would. Beetle hadn't made it through the night of the fight circle. Which was the only reason that Ada hadn't ran away a long time ago, she would die too.

Nikolai didn't have much to do, really.

Wandering the forest - as a loner like him would do - idly sustaining himself and only himself, without a need to be the older brother to some of his family, and haveing accepted that he'd leave to find greater things - it wasn't really what he had anticipated, but it was a thing nonetheless.

He'd found a stream earlier, and taken the time to sniff around for some wolf scents before splashing around in the stream just for the fun of it. Nothing wrong with enjoying himself, and there was precious little else for him to do other than catch the occassional rabbit that he didn't need to share with his younger siblings for once, or sniff around to see if anything had changed.

But it hadn't. Day after day of sniffing around and finding nothing - yet. He still held hope, as a loner wolf like him would.

He hadn't really known what to expect from leaving his pack and going to find another to join. True, there were some in his pack who had done the same, but it was more of an instinct for him to follow rather than a conscious choice.

He was still soaking wet, and relieved of the itchiness after splashing around in the stream, when he finally detected something in the air.

Yeah, that was definitely a wolf. Of sorts. Definitely not one that he had smelled before.

Idly, he wondered how far he had gone. His pack was... maybe fifteen days or so behind him? He wasn't counting, and had never planned to count. But here he was... and there was definitely a wolf smell ahead of him.

Actually, no. More than one. One smelled like desperation, fear, and cranberries. The others smelled like powerful brutes, and Nikolai instinctively tensed as he smelt them. Cruelty mixed with obedience and passion for whatever they were doing. Definitely not wolves to be messed with.

But... who was the other scent though? Nikolai's natural curiosity was aroused as he made one of his famous snap decisions. Rather than continue on his way, looking for the scent that he wanted, he decided to follow the scent of the desperate wolf and what smelt like enforcers. Because at least, it'd break the monotony. Maybe he'd also see what this was about, too.

As the sun went down behind the mountains, Ada stood nervously at the end of a line of wolves. Being the lowest ranking wolf in the pack, she was to be inspected last. Alpha moved down the line, occasionally sniffing a wolf's breath to make sure they hadn't been eating anything from the prey stash, or gone hunting for some food. The cruel leader of the pack demanded that only the wolves with perfect obedience should deserve to eat. As the Alpha reached the young she wolf, he looked suspiciously at her ribcage, which was very slightly less boney than usual. "You haven't been eating now, have you? Omega?" He spat the last word out as though it was a mouthful of mud. Ada bowed down at her alpha's feet, as was required of her. "No Alpha." She lied, trying to keep any emotions that she was currently feeling out of her voice. She had learned from an older wolf that had once been in the pack, that eating a mouthful of leaves, and some dirt, would mask the scent of food. It was disgusting, but worth it to not starve to death, as so many in this cruel pack did. "Has a wolf outside of the pack been bringing you food?" He questioned furiously. "Because you know the rules about other wolves. Would you care to remind any younger pack members the rules?" He sneered, looking at the sister of the young wolf who had tried to run off. "Outside of the pack is death. Any wolf venturing outside of the pack, will be killed. Any wolves that meet, one of them being outside of the pack, will both be killed." She spat. The dominant wolf swooped down and sliced her muzzle with his teeth. "Don't be ungrateful and say that with an annoyed tone in your voice, as if you had the right to talk to me like that." He finished, and walked off to his den.

The next morning Ada was set the task of replacing the soft leaves for the alpha's bed. Venturing farther out than usual, looking for the most comfortable leaves to add to the bed, she caught a scent in the very back of her nose as she opened her mouth to grab some leaves that looked good enough. Another wolf. Very faintly, she could smell him about five rabbit chases away. (Five Kilometers.) Although a corner of her brain knew this would end badly, it was part of the pack rules that she had to go report this to the Alpha.

It was definitely a pack.

That was Nikolai's first observation through some leaves on a knoll, far enough that his scent shouldn't be scentable from where they were. At least, unless they were actively searching for him - and he doubted it.

At least, it was a pack. It didn't really function like any other pack he'd seen.

For example, he really wasn't sure why some of the wolves look so thin to the point of starving. And the others looked completely fine.

Sure, omegas (even in his previous pack) had less rations than the others. But that didn't imply this level of deprivation. And there wasn't just one of them (which would signify their lower rank)... there were multiple.

Nikolai knew the workings of a pack. He'd studied his previous alpha's movements, and understood what a pack leader should do for the benefit of their pack.

As Nikolai watched them, sitting completely still with only his eyes flicking pack and forth - either they were a one-off and everyone did it differently, or there was something seriously off. He couldn't tell though.

Nikolai had become a loner with the intention of joining a different pack, or perhaps starting one of his own. This was the first wolf pack that he'd actually stumbled upon, in all his weeks of travelling.

But as he watched the pack dynamics from his little knoll, he didn't like it. Oh no he definitely didn't. His mind was already made up that he'd rather take his chances elsewhere rather than go with these wolves.

For now though, he'd be conent to just sit there for a few more hours and look at them, with his quiet, inward longing to be part of one again - even if it definitely wasn't going to be this one.

As she finished replacing the beds, Ada slowly crawled over to her Alpha, her belly merely an inch from the ground, her eyes down and her tail between her legs. This was, according to the cruel leader, a respectful position, although Ada held no respect for him whatsoever. She sat at her Alpha's feet waiting for permission to speak as he looked at her with his cold ruthless eyes. Finally as her legs began to shake from holding the crouched position for so long, her Alpha spat, "You may speak.”

“Thank you master.” She added a grateful tone to her voice, as though it was an honor to be addressed by him. “I was refreshing your bed and went farther out than usual, to find only the best leaves for you,” She tried not to gag as she heard the simpering tone in her own voice. “and I scented another wolf sir, a lone male.”

“You what?!” He growled, as she flinched at his sudden outburst. “He is within a small range from here.” She added. “Send a hunting party to find him. Bring him back here, but don’t kill him yet. I want to see the life leave his eyes.” He grimaced. Immediately the four strongest wolves of the pack raced off to find the loner.

Axe, the wolf that was third in command in the pack, led the others on a wide search around the area of their territory. “Split up, and fan out. Howl if you find him so the rest can find you.” He said with a gruff voice like rocks sliding against one another. At once the wolves separated, noses to the ground and ears on high alert. “Not one of us will rest until we find the trespasser!” Axe announced as he too put his snout to work.

Nikolai wasn't entirely aware of the other wolves until they were practically on top of him.

He was just watching the other pack, watching them talk - in fact, that one over there seemed to be absolutely submitting themselves before the Alpha as they - she - seemed to give them what seemed to be important. Nikolaiinwardly snorted at the gestures between the two of them, even as his mind creased slightly with worry.

What, exactly, had the alpha done to make the wolves so submissive? Because that was what he was seeing now, he realized. One mega-powerful wolf alongside a few extremely submissive wolves.

He was preoccupied enough that he barely noticed the four wolves approaching him until they were nearly upon him.

Nikolai didn't have much in terms of size, and these wolves would clearly might have been big.

But they were underfed. By Nikolai's standards, a lot of those wolves inside were running on not much.

These wolves proved exactly that. They weren't running on nutrition - they were running on fear. And fear is a greater motivator than anything else.

Nikolai quickly realized, as soon as the first wolf materialized out of the bushes, that he was outmatched. They had found his scent. And it seemed they were out for blood.

The wolf - who had ribs sticking out like he was barely fed - howled, and Nikolai took that opportunity to get the hell out of there.

He absolutely took off. Nikolai's build was built like a runner, and for once he completely used it to his advantage as he dashed away, in the opposite direction as that toxic pack, and hopefully away from anyone else pursuing him. Listening to the underbush rustle - beneath him and perhaps.. two other wolves behind him?

So it was a two versus one. Not great odds, but he had the strength to keep running. Maybe he could outrun them?

Or maybe he couldn't. For now, though, he was fuelled on food (unlike the ones pursuing him), and they were fueled by fear and desperation.

Nikolai practically had his life on the line as he dashed away, hoping (but not really thinking) that he'd be able to get out.

It just hung right here.
