This rainy day seemed to drag on for ages for the young woman who sat inside the quiet college classroom. The rain tapped melodically against the glass window pains, the weather keeping the room a gloomy tone. The teacher's monotone voice carried on, explaining something about math but Sabrina was too distracted with the small scribbled drawing she had been working on at the top of her notebook. Math was just not for her, she may have been a very intelligent woman but with each year it seemed to make less sense. Sabrina's mind had been occupied these last few weeks with her current book she had been reading, she had already made it to the second one and left one a decent cliffahanger, her mind itching to go home, bundle up and continue. Reading was her escape from the world, one where she could use her imagination to leave. But for now she had to pull back to reality and get through the rest of the day. The rest of the day was simple, english and then her art studies classes, finally something she didn't mind. Once she left that math class, time had flew by, the faint hint of sun illuminating the clouds slowly beginning to set. Popping up her umbrella, Sabrina began her journey home to her studio apartment, not too far from the main campus. She lived alone, her paradise in this world where she could live how she pleased and also have an area to work on her artwork she liked to sell. The walk home was just like every other, music playing in her airpods to block out the cities noises. Once home, she took the elevator to her floor, entering the peaceful abode. Slipping off her shoes, she set her bag down and keys on the entrance table. Home sweet home. The rest of the evening was peaceful, she showered and slipped into her oversized tee shirt, made herself some delicious dinner that consisted of some pesto pasta and a small ceasar salad, and got a few small chores done like laundry and vaccuming. But now her favorite part of the day came. The sun had set, the dim, orange toned lights softly illuminated her bedroom as she closed the door behind her. Crawling into bed she pulled the soft comforters up over her body, leaning back as she took hold of the book that laid on her nightstand. The cover was a deep, matte black with silver and gold designs, she had found this copy of the book being sold at a local bookstore, sitting in a pile of discounted ones. She chose it for the stunning design, like a diamond in the rough. It was the second book in the series so she found a cheap copy of the first online. Reading through the first she had fallen in love with the 'villian' of the book, Nyxeris. Something about him was so fascinating. Even though he was the villian, she understood his struggles, his reasons. Who knows, maybe she was just another girl who loved the bad guys. And so Sabrina's night began, sitting back as she continued where she left off in the story, Nyxeris was losing. Her eyes stayed locked onto the words that pulled her deeper and deeper. The details swallowing her whole. Sometimes Sabrina wished she could just dissapear into a fantasy world, it would be so much more interesting than this boring city where everyone lived the same way each and every day, but she knew it would never come true, so this would have to do. Minutes began to pass by, Hours too as she read into the night. Time meant nothing as the plot thickened. That was until her internal clock told her it was enough, her tired mind slipping into darkenss and slumber at some point. Now asleep, the book laid open on her chest that rose and fell with each breath, her dreams now taking control for the night, unaware of the events that would soon occure.

Nothing had gone wrong, nothing.. Everything was perfect. That’s what he told himself. He could defeat his enemy, Annalise, if he just thought hard enough. He stared at the map on his table, lost in various different strategies and none seemed like the perfect combination to take down his opponent. He spent the night like that. The sun dipped down below the hills and the stars came out to shine… time went on and on and on and before he knew it; the sun was rising and it was time to fight. If he was confident enough he could do anything. That’s what everything boiled down to in the end. His footsteps echoed against the stone walls of his hallways, torches glowing softly. You’d think a royal like him would have better lighting, but remember.. If it’s too light, he’d be at a major disadvantage. He was met with a legion of his own court’s warriors, standing with him and waiting for the Seelie to join them. They waited, and waited.. Nothing came. Just as they were letting their guard down an arrow whizzed through the air and hit the metal chestplate Nyxeris was wearing. The battle began, officially, at that moment. The screams and cries of his warriors beside him boosted his morale and led him to take down his enemies with ease. He snared one with illusions and shadows, used brute force on another with his sword and all through the pile of decay and confrontation he was heading in a straight path towards Annalise. The path was so clear, he was just one footstep away from her when suddenly the world went blank. He was met with an eerie silence and he felt like he was floating? That.. can’t be right, can it? Even though he could fly, this was something completely different. This felt.. Uncomfortable and strange. He found himself standing by the bed of what appeared to be a… human? He had read about these creatures, but only because they were described in fables to be much like fae but weaker, pettier and lacking in appearance. Not that they weren’t lovely to look at, according to the fae that met them, but they didn’t have wings or tails or anything noteworthy. “Wait.. where’s my crown?” Nyxeris patted his head when he realised the crown of twisted brambles and withering roses was no longer sitting atop his head. He set a glare on the human, staring with the intensity of a volcano on the brink of eruption. He wouldn’t wake her, however. That would be quite rude and besides.. He had streaks of blood on his clothes. Wait! Even his clothes looked different now.. They looked… sleek and surreal. There was no blood on his clothes, but there were splatters on his hands. He tossed one last glare towards the human woman and headed off to search this quaint little apartment. His footsteps didn’t echo here like he was used to. They did make rhythmic tapping on the floors below him. It was interesting to see how the humans found their own living situations but it was no castle like he was used to. He found a sink and washed his hands under cold water. The sound of the water soothed him a little, probably only because he liked the sound of rain back home and any little thing could provide comfort. He walked back to the human girl’s room, pulled a chair up to a corner of the room and grabbed the book now laying at the foot of her bed. He flipped it open, carelessly skipping the page it had been open on and went all the way back to the beginning. Nothing could have prepared him for the shock when he saw his own name being the first word in the first chapter. They even spelled it the exact same! What kind of magic is this?! He absorbed the words as fast as possible, thoroughly reading through a book that described his entire life. His black eyes took in each word and he was still reading the book when the girl woke up. He didn’t even notice her, he was half way through.

Sabrina's dreams were vivid, her mind and body in a whole new world. Each night was something new, tonight she was running through a field of tulips, dancing in the sunlight with a stranger. She was a deep sleeper, so of course when the book that once laid on her chest had flew across the bed to the floor, she merely rolled to her side, pulling the sheets up closer to her chest. As the strange man appeared in her room, being pulled from the very words of the book, she jostled slightly, letting a small groan escape her lips as she turned from the light of her lamp that sat on her nightstand. How had she not heard the shocked breath or quietly mumbled words? Maybe her mind thought it was apart of the dream, morphing it into just background noises to keep her at rest. The small sounds of the man moving around her apartment began to bring her to, a scrunched expression on her face as she fought with sleep. She was comfortable, warm, she didn't want to wake. It was soon silent, he had taken place in the corner of her room, flipping through pages quietly. All was well, it was just her mind and she could fall into her deep slumber again. That was until a few hours had past. The room was deathly silent now, the city life dying down, everything now asleep. The soft, rythmic sound of paper flipping around started to pull her from her sleep once more. Flip. Flip. Flip. It continued over and over as Nyxeris dove deeper and deeper into the writing of his life. Softly rolling over, Sabrina rubbed her face, slowly pushing the covers from her body as she sat up. Her eyes saw the man at first, not believing it until she blinked and looked again. There was a man sitting in the shadows of her room. Her tired eyes now shot wide open, fight or flight taking over the girls body. She screamed in fear, pushing herself back as she grabbed the closest thing that was near her.Her slender fingers took hold of the ceramic lamp on her nightstand, pulling the cord from her wall as she chucked it at the intruder. Scrambling to her feet she booked it for the door, running down the stairs only to miss the last step in the dark and fall. Wincing she pulled herself up, running into the kitchen where she grabbed a kitchen knife off of the knife block to protect herself. Her hands trembled, eyes darting around in the darkness as her fingers fumbled for the home phone she normally kept in the kitchen, waiting for the man to start chasing after her. Where was the phone? The couch, she had left it there. Quickly she made a b-line, her breath shaking as her feet launched her.

Nyxeris didn’t notice anything. His acute hearing failed him at this moment. As the human stirred, sat up and saw him all he did was turn another page. Flip. He looked up from the book when she screamed, it was too dark for her to notice his fully black eyes. “What’re you-” Nyxeris began, quickly silenced by the ceramic lamp hitting his head. He was stunned, momentarily of course. Not once in all his years had someone thrown a lamp at him. Sure, maybe a weapon or two but a lamp? That was new. She was already down the stairs by the time he stood up, though fate was not on her side. Nyxeris was still quicker than the average human and he bolted down to where he heard her fall. She seemed to be gone but not far, he easily found her running to the phone as if he was some common thief. “Calm down!” Nyxeris growled as he scooped her up from the floor just before she got her hands on the phone. “There’s nothing to worry about goddammit. Stop being so clumsy. It's unbecoming.” Nyx took her along with him as he walked to the corner of the room and flipped on the lights. Obviously, he hated it but for the sake of having a small chance of a regular conversation with this.. Human. He placed her down gently onto the couch, standing above her intimidatingly but he didn’t intend it like that. He just wouldn’t move for the sake of not letting her make a run for it again. “By the twisted roots..” Nyx muttered. “Would you care to have a normal conversation? Calm down a little.” Nyx waited for her to calm down, watching her intently. He backed off a little bit, but only a little. He stayed close, standing not far from the couch and still blocking the way to the phone. He tried to bend her reality, create illusions to help her calm down and make her see him as human… but something was wrong. It didn’t work. Why is this happening? First a book about my life in the hands of this heathen, and now I can’t use one of my favourite spells? This situation was horrible, but he would have to make due. “I think I deserve an explanation, why do you have a book dedicated to me and my life?” He set a withering glare on her and hoped he wouldn’t have to do more than create expressions for this human woman to give him answers. She read the book about him, right? So she knows what he’s capable of. She can’t tell I can’t use magic… well.. my wings are gone so it may be a tad easy to observe but for the moment she’s scared, she wouldn’t put it together properly for now. (Lovely short responses lol)

The phone, it was so close, she could see the faint glow of the buttons as it rested on the arm of the couch. She just needed to grab it, dial 911 and run, maybe out to the balcony and down the fire escape? As she sprinted across the wood floor, she was about to make it before she felt her feet leave the floor. With ease the man had scooped her up with an arm, easily as if her body weighed nothing to him. She hit at his arm, mere taps against his muscled arm that held her, quite pitiful. "Let me go!" She yelled, squirming to get her body lose. It was a fail as he easily walked with her, setting her carefully on the leather sofa. Her chest shook with each breath as her eyes looked up to him. His form towered over her, was this the end, she had heard horror stories of women being killed in their own homes by intruders. "Calm down?" She snapped, sitting back deep into the couch, hands clenched tightly as she kept her eyes on him. "You broke into my home and you are telling me to calm down?" She added, watching as he stepped back slightly. She glanced to the phone in the corner of her eye, it was so close, but he was closer. Sabrina's brows furrowed even more as he began to ask about a book she was reading. "Dedicated to you? What are you talking about? I read a ton of books" she said, her gaze locked on his dark eyes. "What do you want? Money? I'll give you what I have" she explained. He chuckled at her words, asking her again about the book. That's when it slowly began to click in her mind. Her breath calmed as her eyes widened with shock a bit more. "The book, you? You're Nyxeris?" She asked. It made some sense, he looked just like how he was described in the book, well as a human. He spoke like him, his mannerisms were similar. "How.... how the hell is a book character here? You aren't real, you are a character" she said, "I'm just stuck in a dream" she added, "or I'm losing my mind, if I just go back to sleep, it will all go away and you won't be here." She said. She closed her eyes and took a breath, opening a moment later to see Nyx still hovering over her. What was this? "If you are actually him, how, and why are you even here?"

“I did not break in. I never came here because I wanted to, let me make that perfectly clear.” Nyx huffed. He watched as she calmed and logic returned. The way she processed it was interesting… he was no mere book character. “No, I’m perfectly real. You’re not insane either, as far as I know.” Nyxeris peered down at her, waiting for her eyes to open again after pretending like sleep would happen. “I’ve created many illusions in my time, but this isn’t one of them.” “Yes, for the love of Cimmerian, I am the real Nyxeris.” He sighed. “I’d also love to know how I got here, all I know is I was just about to win everything when everything went black. And that’s when I found myself standing by your bed and the book by the end of it.” He sat down on the edge of the couch not wanting to touch her. It would be weird for the both of them, plus touching someone in a panic might get another lamp thrown at him. Though.. It may convince this crazy lady that he was in fact real and was never a book character. Still.. Why would she have a book about him and still not know who he was otherwise? Seems suspicious. Maybe she was correct.. Maybe he was a book character. No.. that’s nonsense. He’s always been around, for almost five hundred years as well! Who wouldn’t know about him? Surely if he went outside, grabbed a random person and asked if they knew who he was, they’d know. Right? Right?! First.. His sword and crown. “Where did you put my crown? And my sword.” Nyxeris got up from the couch and went straight for the kitchen. He began raiding the surrounding cupboards, the pantry and any openable spaces he could find. It all sounded silent though, as he despised loud noises. Safe to say, he didn’t end up finding his crown there. He marched back to the human on the couch. He towered over her like an ominous silhouette with his arms crossed against his chest. “Where are they? Where did you hide them? Thief.” Nyxeris accused. Clearly if he had no crown and no sword with him and on his person, this human woman must be a con artist who stole them from him. She acted like he didn’t know him, or only as a character from the book but that didn’t mean it wasn’t just a cover for her petty crimes. Maybe she did know him and stole any valuables on his person when he appeared here. He would learn the truth before long.

Sabrina shook her head, her face twisted in confusion, "This makes no sense at all, you are the villain in a book I read, you are a made up character written by some old lady." She said, shaking her head before she watched the tall man take a seat at the other end of the couch. The cushions moved with his body, he had to be real. "If you're real, from the book, you have powers, you can move in the shadows, you can sense when people are going to die, prove it" she said, moving farther from him on the couch. His body blocked the phone, there was no way to get to it. She still did not believe this man, this stranger who somehow got in her house yet no locks were open or windows broken. As the man questioned her on his items, his crown and sword she watched as he stormed her kitchen. "I have no clue what you are talking about, a crown and a sword? It's 2024, no one carries those medieval things around" she said. He began to open all of her cabinets, moving her goods to look for his precious items. "Hey! I don't have your stupid crown, leave my stuff alone!" She yelled at him. She was about to stand up when he quickly came back, towering over her body. It was intimidating, his dark eyes staring down into her soul. She went quite, sitting back into the couch as her golden eyes watched his. "Listen, I don't have your crown or your sword. And by the looks of your clothes, you didn't wear those when you were in your castle or whatever. Maybe when you transported somehow all your stuff was switched? I know it sounds crazy, well all of this does, but your clothes changed because you are in a new time?" She explained, trying to come up with some reason to all of this. "But why all of a sudden? In the book it doesn't end before you get to Annalise, you lose your war. You get captured, but why did it send you here right at that moment?" She asked.
