I bought a wolf to retire it but this popped up.

I swear I've read that it was a bug on the forums but it doesn't look like it.

Is this supposed to happen or is it a bug that hasn't been fixed?

that wolf has been currently bred to several females. As far as I know you can't retire male wolves that have been bred unless I am wrong. Once the pups are born you can retire him.

Not a bug. The father has to be kept alive so that his pups will have him in the bloodline; if he's retired before they're born, he would be erased from the game and mess up pups' bloodlines.
