Melas tend to go for 50+ mushrooms. It's not the rarest defect, but it is one of the more sought out defects

If you really want to know, look up how many melanisms there are in the game right now and divide it by the total number of wolves in the game:
838 melas / 81542 wolves
Right now, I'm estimating the rate of getting a mela at less than 1%.
