Near an undiscovered island paradise, just under the sparkling waves that crash along the shimmering beaches, there is a reef bustling with activity. This reef is also the bustling city of mermaids who have lived a peaceful carefree existence for as long as they can remember. Rarely engaging in conflict with its neighbors, the underwater city of Neralos has celebrated an era of prosperity within itself and with its political alliances.

However, while those that live outside of the vibrant reef's coral walls may assume life is near-perfect here, the citizens of Neralos are starting to realize that there may be an even bigger scheme in their government than they had originally assumed.

Neralos is ruled by one Monarch, assisted by their council of advisors, who play an active role in the Monarch's life. The current Monarch took the throne three years ago... and already, their reign is wracked with controversy. Beginning with tragedy, the original reigning Monarch and their Heirs were assassinated, leaving the court of advisors no choice but to put the nearest blood relative in power. This current Monarch is a second cousin of the original Royal Family, one who had originally been a noble but not considered a royal.

However, a mer claiming to be the true heir of the Neralos throne has stepped up, challenging the new ruler by claiming to be one of the deceased children of the original Monarch. While they do appear to resemble one of the late royals, something about their story seems suspicious... however, the circumstances of the cousin's rise to power were also odd, considering how quickly they located this cousin and how the advisors swiftly shoved them into their throne.

Now, the citizens of Neralos are divided, splitting the reef city into two main factions - those who do not believe the "long lost" heir, and those who do not believe the "cousin" heir. Still, there is a small portion who take neither side, either being neutral or just downright disapproving of the leadership to begin with.

Will you solve this mystery once and for all and find out who the rightful heir of Neralos is, or will you fight to keep your scheme up and the kingdom running under the fin of the false heir... if either of them even are legitimate?

Rules
  1. All WP rules apply. If using images for your character, credit them!
  2. Hate the character, not the player.
  3. This is a semi-literate RP, please be able to post at least two paragraphs in every post.
  4. Related to above, I need 200-300 words in personality/appearance. However, I will accept listed out traits in personality - if there are more than 7.
  5. No weeping willows / Mary Sues. I will reject any character with too much focus on being gorgeous/flirtatious/etc. You must develop your character outside of how attractive and seductive you want them to be. (I will accept characters with these traits if there is not a ridiculous amount of emphasis on it and you keep it contained to 1-2 paragraphs). This is to prevent your character from becoming one-dimensional.
  6. You must communicate with me AND your fellow roleplayer. If I send you a DM related to the RP, you must respond to it, and I would prefer if you did the same for your fellow RPer. Communication is the key to a successful RP!
  7. Reservations last 48 hours. If your form remains blank or a WIP by that time, the spot will reopen. I will try to give reminders before I reopen the slot, but if I get no response by the next time you come online, I will open it up again.
  8. No romances or relationships between your own characters. I would prefer if every form had a relationship with another user’s character by the time the RP begins, so please reach out to other members!
  9. You can make up to 3 characters at this time. I would prefer if they were not all part of one faction to prevent one group from becoming noticeably overpopulated.
  10. Try to keep gender ratios even / almost even
  11. Because this is a fantasy RP, I will allow pretty much anything when it comes to your character's appearance. They can have unrealistic hair colors and odd markings along their body and whatever else you want.
  12. I will DM the Heir, Monarch, and Advisor players as to who the real and false inheritor of the throne is, as well as a google doc of my rough idea of how the plot may progress for you to build upon. Please post a reservation or WIP for Heir/Monarch/Advisors so I can send the link with more context to you! I don't want forms getting too detailed before I show you some of my rough ideas for you to build upon. Regardless of if you are the real one or not (or in the case of Advisors, know who the real Heir is), try to avoid spoiling anything. Attempt to be as convincing as possible while dropping hints of inconsistencies to keep people on their toes.

Roles Explained
Monarch
As you can probably assume, the Monarch is the mermaid that rules the kingdom of Neralos. The rank was originally hereditary, passed down from the previous Monarch to their direct offspring. This is the first time in recent history that someone who was not in the immediate family of the last Monarch has taken the throne.
However, the Monarch does not have absolute power, and sometimes the range of their abilities can be reduced to simply serving as a figurehead. However, they are presented as being the supreme ruler, so this is not common knowledge to the public.
Court of Advisors
The Court of Advisors is a small group composed of 3-4 individuals. They are high-ranking nobles who usually hail from a noble background, one that already had relations with the royal family. The small Court is there to give the Monarch alternate opinions and to run 'less important' matters.
Behind the scenes, they carry an almost equal amount of power, if not more when they unite on a subject. Especially when the new Monarch is inexperienced.
Heirs
Before the fateful night three years ago, there were five heirs lined up for the throne - now, there are none. Well. If you ask some merfolk, there are none. Others believe that a new mermaid is speaking the truth when they say they are a long-lost heir and are trying to reclaim what is rightfully their throne.
What heirs typically did isn't important now. This potential survivor of the assassination is currently attempting to rally a rebellion and restore what they claim was always meant for them.
Upper Class
Nobles, warriors, and the like are all considered Upper Class. One could be born in the Upper Class or could have worked their way to the top. These merfolk usually live in extravagant coral manors inside the reef, enjoying luxuries those lower than them are barred from. Most of the Upper Class is more likely to side with the current Monarch rather than the "true" Heir.
Middle Class
The middle class is every typical day-to-day merfolk. Seldom leaving the reef, they work as coral growers (guiding the coral into growing into shapes fit for a home, pretty much their equivalent of a carpenter), fish or clam farmers, historians, and sometimes even fish or shark hunters, among other things. They live throughout the reef, though their neighborhoods tend to be closer to the center.
The Middle Class seems to have more mixed opinions on who they are loyal to.
Lower Class
These mermaids are at the bottom of the trench, figuratively speaking. They could be simple scavengers who gather up what humans drop and attempt to sell it, or seaweed farmers who are struggling to keep their crops growing, or maybe they have no career at all. Usually living on the outskirts of the reef, some of them can't even find a coral cave to call their own home. Those in the Lower Class are also divided in their loyalty - but a common theme among these mers is remaining neutral. They are more concerned with getting by.

Appearance

Annora’s entire body is roughly 13’ long, with her torso only taking up about 1.5’, her massive tail taking up the rest of the length. Her skin is extremely pale, with blue markings which look like wavy streaks running across her entire body. Her tail is a dull blue color, with a faded pale salmon stripe running down the middle on each side. The scaleless skin on her tail has a metallic quality to it, making it almost look like it was made of silver from certain angles. Her tail slowly tapers into a point, and along the top of it runs a single long red fin, which crests at the base of her tail to be a few inches longer than the rest of it. She has long red whiskers(? I don’t know what the fuck they’re called just look up oarfish they got dangly things) stemming from her pelvis.

Her face is very sharp and angular, with no blemishes visible whatsoever. Her hair is pale red, although the only way to know is from her eyebrows, as the top of her head is completely clean shaven. Her small eyes are dark brown, almost black in color with hints of a dark green around her pupil. She has well defined cheek-bones, giving her an appearance as regal as her status. She often tries to mask her expressions, appearing with a confident smile the majority of the time, however hse can falter when she gets particularly upset or surprised.

Annora’s build is very lithe. She has minimal muscle mass on her body, though she typically defends herself by emitting electric shocks. She consistently wears a royal purple swim-shirt that she found after a human abandoned it, and draped around her shoulders sits a large fishing net, sort of like a cloak or a shawl. Woven into the net are several shards of sea glass, as well as shards of colorful plastic. She wears mismatched earrings, on one ear having a large, dark pearl in a gold setting, and the other one consisting of three dangling pieces of silver metal. She has many hoop earrings adorning her tail, basically having pierced her fin with all of them.

If Marlow were at full health, his tail would be much more glittery and vibrant. If he were at his usual low, some scales would be pale or falling out. At this point in time, he’s somewhere in the middle - not healthy, but not at rock bottom.

Marlow is a decently sized merman, measuring at around 7ft thanks to the tail, which is actually quite a bit smaller than it looks due to his overly flashy tail fins. He seldom wears any clothing besides his necklace because there’s no real need for it, and when he does decide he needs to cover up his skin for once, he typically only wraps himself up in seaweed. Usually somewhat burnt, Marlow’s skin is either a golden tan or ashy tan, depending on his health. Lately, he’s been getting more ashy more frequently.

Despite his youth, Marlow has crowfeet at the corners of his eyes and noticeable dimples and eye bags. This is a product of genetics, burnout, and the unsavory habits he’s picked up to combat said burnout.

When it comes to the human portion of his body, Marlow possesses a good amount of muscle… that is beginning to wither away. He’s getting increasingly bony, his spine, ribs, and collarbone more noticeable than they had been in the past. Even the sharpness of his facial features is a cause for some concern. It’s evident that something is up with the mer, but getting him to talk about it is almost as hard as untangling a tail from a net.
Personality
Paranoid | Erratic | Mischievous | Unpredictable | Heckler | Protective - and Possessive | Stubborn | Numb | Adrenaline Junkie | Chaotic | Morally Gray

You’ll know Marlow has entered the space by the way the crowd almost instantly parts. There’s a distinct air about him, an invisible forcefield that repels everyone off him in a four foot radius. Perhaps it’s the rigidness of his posture, or the glower in his golden glare, or the way he curls his nose disapprovingly, or flinches at any quick movement, but Marlow is always drenched in a very… off vibe. Something about him unsettles everyone, and what was once a very charming man has turned into someone talented at clearing a reef in seconds just by swimming into the area.

This unnerving energy radiates into every aspect of the merman’s life. He’s just odd, there’s no way around it. He’s established his presence as the outcast, and at this point he’s willingly falling back into the role, even donning an actively antagonistic personality at times. One of Marlow’s favorite hobbies is the heckling and harassment of upper class merfolk. This can range from petty insults shouted from a distance to getting a bit too bold and following them for a few feet along the reef, pestering them and sometimes even tossing harmless sea sponges at them. He has an apparent distaste for anyone who’s doing a bit too well in the reef, and only a fraction of this resentment is caused by his own bitterness. Marlow does have genuine reasons, and he’d love to rant about them, but there are very few people who want to listen to the reef’s madman's tyrade.

As the social reject, Marlow spends most of his days lingering outside of the reef and getting into his own trouble. Exploring abandoned sea wrecks, diving down trenches to see what weird fish specimens he can discover, and tampering with human’s fishing equipment are all just a few things he does to occupy himself. Marlow has a habit of following fishing lines so he can cut the hooks or lures off to make custom jewelry for himself. Every day he tries to push the limits of safety further, treating his own mortality as if it’s a disposable thing. He doesn’t seem to care for any warnings and certainly does not heed them. What Marlow wants, Marlow does, consequences be damned. So what if he’s already an amputee - what’s gonna happen, his other arm is gonna fall off? Big whoop, it’s happened before.

He also toils as a farmer of whatever small plants and sea life he deems exquisite, but this is a far less intensive hobby. It’s just his job, the only thing he thinks he knows how to do without fucking it up. Marlow is the flora expert, if you have any plant questions, you swim over to Marlow… or don’t, because he’s. Well. Marlow.

Jumpy and paranoid, Marlow behaves as erratically as he does recklessly. The lack of conversation partners is a problem he has a quick solution to - simply talk to himself. When he’s alone, he does it intentionally, often cracking inside jokes with himself and snickering at his own witty comments. When he’s in public, he’s usually murmuring under his breath and doesn’t even realize he’s doing it. Maybe it’s habit or maybe he’s on autopilot, but Marlow has been known to have full conversations with himself while he’s swimming about the reef and looking for things to scavenge. He is always embarrassed when this is brought to his attention, but it’s happened so much at this point that it’s becoming routine, and the shame is fading. At least, he tries to reassure himself, this is the only thing that occurs in public… usually. The iceberg goes way deeper than that, but Marlow finds it imperative to cover up all evidence of something wrong, terrified of being labeled “mad”. Or confirming everyone’s suspicious that he already is. Even if he’s starting to embrace the role of the weird one around the reef, he’s still trying to salvage somewhat of a reputation, and deep down he despises the social niche he’s been served.

Marlow’s emotions are constantly shifting. Every few months, he goes through one of two phases - the overly hyperactive him, the one he considers more true to the Real Marlow, and the numb one. He hates numb seasons. Those are the weeks when no one on the reef even sees him, he’s holed up so long in his little cave on the outskirts. Somehow he behaves even stranger during Numb Season when he is out and about - however, this odd behavior rapidly makes more sense when you notice all the pufferfish he keeps snatching up. He uses pufferfish for the same purposes that dolphins do, to put it lightly. After all, to combat the numbness, he must trip out until his tail looks like it’s changing colors. At least he gets a bit more giggly and friendly when he’s at his utter worst, if only because the whole world is currently changing colors all around him and he’s overloaded by too much whimsy.

Deep down, once you truly get to know Marlow beyond the slightly stand-offish, very cautious, and a bit strange image he presents, he actually does become an overly affectionate person. He has somewhat of a temper and is rather easy to irritate, but he means well. He just doesn’t know how to go about it. But he truly doesn’t mean anyone any harm unless he has a real reason to.

Real Marlow can be incredibly protective and very entertaining. That mischievous glimmer in his eye usually means he’s cooking up a Bad IdeaTM for him and his friends to partake in. He’s surprisingly quite funny, having a few years of practice now after chattering to himself every time he goes off on a small expedition. And he’s very cuddly, dear Posiedon the man is like an octopus. If he had it his way, he’d be latching onto his special someone like a male anglerfish attaches to a female anglerfish (was that a weird analogy? He thinks that might have been a weird analogy).

But he can be incredibly, incredibly possessive, too. Once he latches onto someone, he is absolutely terrified of losing them. He’s lost everyone once before and it has left him scared to make bonds and even more threatened by the thought these bonds vanishing. Truly, he means well, but he can get very bossy and even a bit controlling and overbearing if he really cares for someone. It’s not really about controlling them, per se, but it is about keeping them where he can see them and therefor out of harms way. He doesn’t want to govern your life but he does not trust you to not die on him like those before did.

Marlow is also an excellent storyteller. The old him shines through when it comes to entertainment, the tales he weaves being incredibly outlandish, but he tells them with such humor and skill that they may almost sound believable. He gets very animated when telling a story - he gets animated any time he's genuinely intrigued or energized, honestly - and often waves his arm or tail around for dramatic effect or even acts out some scenes. He does all the voices and the embelished sound effects for whatever gossip he's currently relaying. He thrives off of making people laugh and being entertaining, as surprising as that may be considering the rest of his character.

(possibly WIP i feel like i left out all of his more positive traits)

Strengths (3 minimum)
Greenthumb
One thing Marlow is genuinely talented with is plants. He loves plants. He treats his little garden like it’s his nest and he has a batch of eggs growing in it. Most of his interactions now are focused on helping a mer with their plants or selling his crops to them. Somehow, despite being relatively dimwitted (all of the genetics went to sculpting his face and thickening his hair), he retains some of the best plant knowledge in this hemisphere. Most of it is self-taught.

Dexterity / Flexibility

Marlow prides himself in how flexible he is even despite the nasty scar that rips through his torso. He’s not so flexible that he can twist himself into a knot (though he’ll certainly try if you dare him), but he is quick on his fins and is pretty damn good at dodging and making sharp turns.

Well-Traveled

Marlow’s wandered aimlessly for a long time now. This reef is his attempt at a forever home, though knowing him, it may wind up being a 2-month pit-stop. This traveling has given him a good amount of experience and street-smarts even if he doesn’t realize it. Or utilize it.

Voice Mimicry

Marlow thinks he has two gifts; gardening and mimicking. The mimicry is one he uses for more mischevious purposes. This ranges from doing wacky voices for his stories, to learning how to sound exactly like a friend of his so he can hide just out of view and call out to them in their own voice. The vocal range he possesses is almost unbelievable, and the only voices he has real trouble picking up are extremely feminine ones or voices of anyone under 14.

Weaknesses (3 minimum)

Extraordinarily Poor Social Skills

Not always true, but currently a fact in his current condition, Marlow isn’t great at making friends. He’s either overly cold or just awkward and radiates this… strange energy. His eyes are too intense. He moves too frantically. He can just be unpleasant in general if you catch him on a bad day or if you’re a wealthier merfolk whom he sensed on his radar. He can be charming, but first, you have to get over the general oddness and the uneasy vibes. And hope that he doesn’t suddenly decide he’ll freeze you out and drop you for no reason other than he’s a bit scared or a bit too tired to keep this relationship up.

Addictive Personality

Marlow is darting from addiction to addiction to distract himself from both physical aches and mental turmoil. Gambling seashells, taking hits of pufferfish toxins, and other unsavory hobbies are all things Marlow has gotten himself ensnared in. Once something feels good and gives him the illusion of regaining control and power in his own life, he’s gluing himself to it. It could even be a fellow person. Marlow is horrendous when it comes to forming healthy coping mechanisms, and always has been.

Paranoia

On his good days, Marlow is only paranoid that he has a crab crawling up his back or his hair isn’t as pretty as he tries to make it look. On his bad days, Marlow thinks something is coming from the Southern seas to kill him, or maybe you’re plotting something against him, or maybe his life is simply going to inexplicably fall apart within the next 24 hours. Though he has a reputation for being under the influence of something every other day, this paranoia is never the cause of his frequent highs. This is just how Marlow is, now. The state of his mental health is abysmal and is at the bottom of the Marina Trench.

Morality

Marlow tries to be a good person and puts forth a real effort to have nothing but good intentions in his heart of hearts, but his morals are becoming increasingly questionable. He has a funny relationship with what’s “too far” and what is too little. Some things that some may find revolting are completely okay in Marlow’s book. Even he’s not really sure where his Big Red Line that should not ever be crossed is, not anymore.

Relationships
Beckett: The Best Friend. Marlow has already attached himself to Beckett like a barnacle on a whale.
Backstory
To sum up a very long tale;
Marlow lost his arm and his original home to an invading pod of merfolk, a different species that was much larger and much more violent than his own pacifist people. He himself was the victim of a particularly sadistic orca mermaid in the group… to this day he’s terrified she’s still chasing him, and every time he’s swimming through dark waters he can almost feel her talons on his tail.

Now he’s just been wandering. Mentally he’s stuck back there, presently he’s just trying to function normally again. He arrived in this reef a few months ago and has had trouble meshing ever since. Marlow, once charming and charismatic, has now converted to being somewhat of a recluse who’s just looking for a stable place to hide and try to process everything. There was an attempt at the beginning to fit in, but the weird looks and whispers he overheard made him decide that maybe it was better to embrace being the odd one out and give up on actually joining the reef he’s settled at for the time being.

Other
He has a pet sea slug named Bim Bim. Unreasonably attached to her, he loves showing her off like she’s a cool rock he found. She crawled in his cave one day and he decided Yep. You’re Mine.

Kieran is an average sized merfolk, being 5'11" from head to fin and weighing in at a decent 160 lbs. He's somewhat on the lighter end of the weight spectrum for folks his size, but he isn't underweight. His body is boxy, and his torso is almost square-ish.

His hair is thick and flows about freely in the ocean water, and is a rich dark brown color. His nose is hooked, and he has thin lips and a slightly noticeable underbite. He has two sharp canines that protrude from his lower lip, a yellowish white color. His eyebrows are average, having more volume near the ends. He has some wrinkles, mainly on his forehead, as well as eye bags and, sometimes, underneath his mouth. His eyes are a rich brown in color, dark with lighter vibrant notes in them.

Kieran has a warm brown complexion, with darker points on his nose and forehead- a marking his lineage developed ages and ages ago when they started to evolve to mimic human appearances for their torsos. This marking is almost like a hood, and is one of his defining traits. His palms are of a paler warm color, and his upper lip is the same shade as his facial marking. His tail is that of a cobia, though it has many names. he has one set of pectoral fins where his "hips" would be- right under the spot flesh meets scales. He has a dorsal fin on his back and an anal fin on his underside. His body's transition between skin and scale is not abrupt, but instead involves a gradual increase of scales around his belly that end up fully covering his tail. His scales are of typical cobia coloration; the backside is a rich brown while the underside is a pale creamy white. He too has the defining yellow "lemony" stripe on his underside, the same color tipping his anal fin. His fins have some tears in them, and his tail too carries scars though not as many.

One thing to note about Kieran is the fact he has a prosthetic. He lost his tail fin and the tip of his tail a few years back in a freak accident involving collapsed rocks, and has a prosthetic tail as a replacement. The fin is modeled to be as accurate of a replica of his old fin as possible, and has been incredibly helpful in allowing Kieran to swim again- although he cannot swim at high speeds or else the prosthetic will take damage or become dislodged.

His body is covered in scars, ones he mainly gained during hunting trips since he goes solo, and are a more cooler pinkish hue; a light color as they are all old. The only scars he did not receive as injury are the two symmetrical scars underneath his nipples on his chest- a result of chest reconstruction surgery he received when he was 25. He has three long scars on the left of his face that reach from underneath his eye to his jawline; because of this his left eye is always squinted. He can see fine out of it, though sometimes he gets hazy vision. Surely it's nothing ahah.. hah.. on his left shoulder is a puncture would he received from a harpoon. It was a misfire from another hunter, and it was a pretty painful mistake if Kieran does say so himself. He has some other scratches along his left arm but they're from skirmishes with prey. His left ear is torn and truth be told it looks like something took a bite out of it-- because something did. It doesn't impact his hearing though.

Kieran has few objects in his possession, just two to three things he carries. He always has a harpoon on him, as well as having a large or small net depending on the size of the catch he aims to get that day. He always has a bridle as well, and a rein, he uses for his short-beaked common dolphin. Around his neck he often wears a golden locket, though it can't be opened. It's, well, basically sealed shut. It's something passed down by his family, a trinket one ancestor found and decided to cherish. It has a little heart on it too. Kieran doesn't wear this during hunts though as he fears he might lose the thing.

Personality

Kieran is, well, a reserved fellow. He prefers to keep to himself, and isn't very big on anything involving socializing. Most of this mainly stems from the species he's a part of, a very specific subspecies of merfolk that is, since cobia are also solitary animals. His reserved nature mainly comes from the type of upbringing he had as a kid, though with due time and lots of patience he might be lucky enough to unlearn those ways since he bottles things up way more than he oughta. When he bottles things up, and this tends to be real bad for him, Kieran ends up exploding over the smallest of things- but it isn't the small thing that made him blow so much as the culmination of many things, and that small thing is just the thing that blows the kettle.

He can be as stubborn as a mule- not that the phrase holds much ground underwater since merfolk don't know what mules are, so I suppose stubborn as an orca will do- and it tends to be, well, a tricky thing. It can be admirable, he's stubborn and set in his moral beliefs and most of those are agreeable morals. That's good. But he can also be stubborn in bad ways. Hard-headed so to speak. He rarely budges, and if it gets bad enough he does get physical over it. If he refuses to do something, to stop doing something, to leave somewhere, whatever it may be, he makes a big deal over it. Kind of like a man baby, in a way, if you think about it. Though he's not whiny like a man baby. He just clocks you instead. Yeouch. Don't get me started on how this plays into his undying loyalty.

I lied I'm getting into his undying loyalty. Kieran is fiercely loyal, but to a terrible fault. It is the duality of his nature, he is as loyal as he is doomed, and he is a lot of both. Kieran doesn't become loyal easily, it takes things like earning his eye (aka admiration) or, say, saving his life, to get him to be loyal. Once he's loyal to someone he has a tendency to put them on a pedestal. He gets these rose tinted glasses and it hinders him so much. It can ruin him, and hell it has in the past. You'd think with his stubborn nature, especially with his morals, he'd turn away and not remain with someone who is morally questionable or immoral, but his stubbornness takes a twist. He will be stubborn in that he becomes a follower, he is like a dog who cannot part from his master, and his new stubbornness is he will always remain true to those he is loyal to until his dying days. This is loyalty that corrupts, and Kieran has been bitten more than once by this illness. Lucky for him he doesn't have anyone he is yet to be loyal to, the last one vanished, but he will repeat the cycle again. He will.

Less dark stuff, Kieran is so-so with animals. He likes them. Matter of fact he has a dolphin he tamed and trained to be his aid. He prefers his job because he was, well, raised for it but he also enjoys it. He likes going on his dolphin and rushing through the currents with his harpoon and net as he chases down a mako or bluefin. He likes the thrill, but more than anything he just likes the work. You can argue he's even a workaholic. His favorite jobs are ones where he gets pets. Live catches are always more fun. He doesn't have to worry about ammo or whatever he just has a net and gets it done with. Though the bigger the better because they offer more challenge. Kieran is against any kind of neglect or abuse for animals, and is as ethical as can be compared to others in his field. He tends to them, pets he gets, and if he hunts he uses up all parts of an animal. He even likes to keep little trinkets like bones he likes. He's peculiar but in a sweet way.

Strengths

  • Physical strength; Kieran is very strong, something required in his line of work, especially when it comes to hauling prey back and, if requested by the buyer, preparing the meat. Same applies for when he catches sealife for pets, especially when some merfolk tend to have exotic choices in life and can't seem to live without a hefty sea turtle or shark to call their own
  • Aim; straightforward pretty much, you need good aim if you mean to kill something or at the very least wound it. His single hit kill rate is only about 67% which is good considering water makes shooting things hard
  • Loyalty; while his loyalty to government and the rich isn't made known, if you earn Kieran's loyalty consider yourself lucky because this merfolk would, without a doubt, die for you (and also give you lots of gifts)

Weaknesses

  • Speed; unfortunately Kieran can't swim fast, only able to go a top speed of 20 mph when he once used to be able to reach 40. If he goes too fast he could damage or lose his prosthetic and it was, as unsurprising as it is, very expensive to have made for him and cost him a lot of money
  • Loyalty; like a double edged sword Kieran tends to develop rose tinted glasses once he is loyal to someone and it has put him into bad situations in the past but I'll be damned if he ever learns from his mistakes
  • Stubborn; dear me this guy can be hard headed. If Kieran is set in a belief or way, bet on your lucky stars he gives in sooner than later because he won't give in easy without a fight--- and that extends to a literal meaning too
  • Bottles up emotions; Kieran grew up being told he shouldn't express himself, and it has led to him becoming very reserved and bottling things up. This always leads to him blowing up from the buildup emotions, even seemingly over the smallest of things

Name: Beckett. No last name

Age: 22…probably?

Species: Yeti crab. Beckett is very, very, very lost.

Gender: The secret third gender (intersex, masculine leaning)

Pronouns: Ne/Nim/Nis

Sexuality: Pansexual

━━━━━━━━ ━━━━━━━━

Role: Lower-class. Honestly, not even a part of that given that ne’s somehow below rock bottom.

Career: Professional side quest embarker (unemployed)

Loyalty: Neither, frankly. That would imply a level of knowledge about the local monarchy that ne doesn’t possess at the moment.

━━━━━━━━ ☓ ━━━━━━━━

Appearance: Freakish multi-limbed horror from the depths. The first thing you notice is probably the “fur”. Silky, blond, voluminous–it covers every limb, even nis claws. As a decapod, Beckett is the proud owner of not two, not three, not even four, but 10 appendages, all of them covered in “fur” making nis lower half a walking carpet. Just like carpet, Beckett also has the unfortunate (depending on who you ask) tendency to easily collect stuff in nis fuzzy pereiopods, leading to odd smells and unconventional body jewelry (literally just garbage). As for nis upper, more human half, Beckett is built with a very pale, thick torso knotted with muscle and discolored patches (possibly chemical or heat related). Sharp cheekbones, sharper jawline, and thin lips with curved brows make up nis face, all of it framed by a massive choppy mane of brown hair that absolutely looks like a mullet. Nis eyes are very blue and very cloudy, leading one to believe ne may be blind however this is not the case. Beckett can see, just… not very well. Once again, possibly the result of chemicals or heat from the volcanic vents ne grew up in.

Personality: The kind of person you could trust with your drink but not with your heart. Loyal to a fault but beyond emotionally inept. Ne doesn’t possess book smarts or street smarts. Kind of naive but a terrifyingly fast learner. Beckett gets along best with social rejects who are either too lonely to care about nis inability to socialize normally or are as equally inept as nim. Beckett’s the kind that just goes with the flow and figures it out as ne goes along. Free spirited but in a wildly unintentional sense. Kind-hearted but in an awkward way. Notably open about nimself but in way that disguises nis total unwillingness to talk about nis past. People won’t ask more if you’re known to overshare, after all. Lonely but also apathetic about it. Delighted easily by simple things. Beckett also has the tendency to absorb the habits and interests of the people ne’s around.

Strengths
⊳ Instinctual social chameleon
⊳ Physically strong, naturally armored
⊳ Nigh unflappable

Weaknesses
⊳ Vision impaired
⊳ Shit swimmer, slow at walking too
⊳ Infuriatingly low emotional IQ at times

━━━━━━━━ ☓ ━━━━━━━━

Relationships
⊳ Marlow: Beckett's best friend. Why have any further purpose in life when you can attach to someone like a remora? Their relationship may not be the most healthy by traditional benchmarks but they are metaphorically conjoined at the hip and happier for it.

━━━━━━━━ ☓ ━━━━━━━━

Backstory: Yeti crabs like Beckett belong down deep in volcanic vents. Loneliness and spite gave nim a taste for adventure so ne wandered off a bit. "A bit" became "a lot" after ne made wrong turn after wrong turn, poor vision paired with being directionally challenged leading to nim becoming hopelessly lost. Eventually, Beckett ended up in the outskirts of Neralos.
