Burning Embers

▕▁▁▁▁▁▁▵▁▁▁▁▁▁▏

The Kingdom of Ederia is famed for a lot of things, attaining high praise from all those that look upon her. However, there is one thing Ederia is most renowned for: Dragon Riders. The only Kingdom to have come up with a way to tame the legendary beasts, to ride upon their backs as one. It has been like this for decades, perhaps even centuries, few really know. And, together in harmony, Dragons and Humans have lived, creating a proserpous nation.

The Dragon Academy of Ederia is like none other, literally there are no others known to the world. A place where young students who have been lucky enough to be chosen by their dragons go to learn to become the most revered role in all of Ederia: Dragon Riders. Few are selected, as dragons are known to be an entirely selective species, but those who are chosen must learn quickly, and that is where the Academy comes in. Exerpienced riders teach the fledgling riders and their dragons how to work together as one, as well as everything the youths will need to know about dragons and what they are up against in the world.

It sounds like a beautiful, wonderful place, right?

Too bad all good things must come to an end.

Jealous nations, wanting to claim the glory for themselves and bring down Ederia have set their sights on destroying the Academy. It was only a matter of time before the succeeded too. One night, the forces of another Kingdom infilitrated the Kingdom, intent on burning it all. And they did. The Academy was destroyed, the cities burned, and it's occupants, the ones who tried to resist and fight back, were slaughtered. In hopes of preserving a little bit of their legacy so that hope would remain, the Leaders of Ederia and the Dragon Riders commanded the students to flee, to survive, to learn.

As the battle raged on for Ederia, the students fled, looking back on the carnage behind them, hoping that one day they could come back and restore their beloved Kingdom.

Before You Post

The Beginning

It's been about a week or so since the new Riders were chosen by their dragons and were thus enrolled into the Academy for Dragon Riders. It's been a busy week, the Riders given the basics of what to know for Riding their dragon their first time and helping the pairs bond. During this time personalized gear for the Dragons and Riders was being prepared too. There's a buzz in the air, tomorrow is the day. The day that they all mount up for the first time and sail high to become the future Dragon Riders, or plummet to their deaths where the chapter will close on them.

Unfortunately, the fates have a different plan for them. They awake in the night to the sound of explosions. The Great Kingdom of Ederia is under attack. The Dragon Keep, where all the dragons are kept and resting, is attacked first, successfully closing off access to them and preventing them from engaging the attackers. Then, the dorms are attacked. Riders of all types are buried beneath rubble, some destined to never leave their rocky graves.

Knowing that they, with no training, no skills, and no preparation, have no chance aganst an enemy attack as carefully as planned as this, the new Riders must find their gear, find their dragons and then find their escape. As the Kingdom of Ederia and it's Great Dragon Academy are set ablaze, the New Riders can only hope that their escape is not noticed in the carnage being wrought.

The Setting

The Academy is built into a valley between two large mountains, away from the Royal Castle of Ederia. The buildings of the School are built so that they face inward to the open Courtyard where much of their training takes place. There are two Dragon Keeps, one in each mountain on either side of the School. The Mountain to the East is all the Advanced Teams Dragons, and is commonly empty aside from Dragons with Eggs or Young. Whereas the Western Mountain is the Keep where the New Dragons reside. Each Dragon has it's own Cavern [called a Stall by the Riders and Academy Staff or Instructors] where they stay when not taking part in training.

The Dragon Keeps are attacked first, purposely closing off any entrance or exist that gives access to the dragons. Some of them might be injured from the rubble, but it's mostly just a delay, as they'll be able to find their way out through digging, moving rubble, etc. It's just to give the attackers more time without the interference of dragons. Far more Damage was done the Eastern Keep though, will many of the dragons there not making it.

Next the dorms were attacked, and while the dorms where the advanced/experienced riders stay is mostly empty, they were attacked first, completely demolishing the building. Next was the Dorms for the New Recruits, about half of the building will fall to ruins, giving chance for the New Riders to escape with only injuries before the rest falls. From there the attacks are sporadic and hard to predict, destruction is the only goal. By this time, Warriors of the other Kingdom have arrived, intending to finish off any survivors on foot.

Akhenaten
Venom Dragon | Male | Mentions: Raija Vabo

Rough scales glinted in the gentle light of the flame lanterns that lined the pathway through the mountains, marking the entrances of each cave stall. The brown pallette of the dragon was barely dicernable in the darkness, but in the soft light of the flames they had an orangey tint to them. The beasts sides rose and fell with breath as the dragon slept, the length of his body strewn about, loosely coiled both around the female he rested with.

Rumbling in the mountain vibrated through his scales, stirring the dragon and rousing him from his sleep. Chartreuse eyes parted, bleary with sleep as he lifted his head no doubt listening to the rumbles of the mountain. A soft growl poured from his throat as he shifted upwards, the sound of his clawed hands scraping against the cavern floor mingling with the growing soundof the rumble.

"Raija," he purred softly, nudging her gently with his head as he pulled himself up more, looking around as the cave began to shake. Dust and small clods of dirt and pebbles fell from the cieling. His body tensed as he lumbed towards the entrance of their shared cave, tongue flicking out to taste the air, trying to discern what was happening.

"Raija," he called again, "somethings wr--" The explosion of rock and dirt rocked the entire mountain, sending the male careening to the side and into the wall of their cave. A roar of pain erupted from him as he hurled away from the entrance and over to his mate. He knew Raija could protect herself, but she was his nonetheless. Quickly he coiled his body around her and flared his wings, wrapping them around them like a shield and tucked his head down.

Hisses and growls rumbled from him every time he was pelted with rocks and dirt, carving thin scratches into the membrane of his wings. Explosions rocked the mountain, peppering it really, causing more and more debris to fall around them. Akhenaten could only wondering how long it would last.

As an explosion occured above them, he heard the cracking above him before he felt it. A chunk of rock fell from the ceiling of their cage, jagged and a bit smaller than the size of his head, and landed on part of his right wing. He roared and jerked, but refused to move, prefering to take the hit than to allow anything to happen to Raija. He knew how strong she was, she might even be strong than him, but she was his, and his alone. He would protect her at all costs, even if it meant his life.

Time seemed to pass slowly, but it passed nonetheless, and as the dust began to settle around him the explosions ceased and seemed to move elsewhere. He could hear them in the distance, but they were no longer directed at them.

Lifting his head, Akhen looked around before slowly peeling himself away from his mate, hissing at the pain of his wing pinned under the rock. He could tell by looking at it that nothing was broken, it hadn't landed on any bone, but the membrane of the flap itself. He couldn't risk moving his wing though and worsening the damage, it could cause the rock to tear through his wing completely and leave him grounded.

"I need to get the rock off my wing," he grumbled, glancing at Raija before flicking his tongue out to taste again. There wasn't much airflow in the cave now, so he guessed the entrances were caved in, but he could taste the ash, the flame, on the air. Something was wrong. Very, very wrong.

Whistler's snout was stuffed with dust and grit. It grated against her long tongue and filled the hollow in her skull with aching powder.

She wiggled her toes one by one and extended her wings a few inches, scraping against the ruined walls. The stone tentatively protecting her delicate bones from joining the rest of the dust groaned in protest, making Whistler freeze.

"Hello?" She rasped, the distant explosions rattling in her skull. "Hello!"

Soft exhales could be heard echoing throughout the cave, paired with the occasional growl released within her slumber. Sometimes, a lip would twitch -or a singular talon- before falling still. The pattern would repeat itself periodically, continuing in intervals before halting. Whilst not the quietest of sleepers, she was also.. clearly.. not the loudest.

A rumble had vibrated against the ground, stirring her subconscious. With a furrow of her brows, she had shifted her body, pressing up against the form coiled around her before allowing sleep to take over for a second time. Momentarily, the ground had eased, to which she sunk against with a deep exhale and drifted off. That is, she would have drifted off had the soft vibration not begun again.

"Akhenaten," she murmured, eyes remaining closed. "Go find the fool creating that noise, and silence them." Her tone had ended in a growl, the side of her lips peeling upwards in a snarl before falling limp. Content, she stretched a singular hind leg as the male beside her rose after uttering her name, doing her best to ignore the unbecoming sound of his claws scraping the ground. A singular hiss sounded from her throat as pebbles and debris fell from his figure, clicking against the ground near her form. Releasing a puff of annoyance, she listened as he strode farther away, only for his steps to suddenly halt.

"Keep moving," she quietly commanded from her sleep, only to recieve no response. When her name was spoken again, her eyes flung open, a cloud of smoke escaping her flared nostrils. "What!" She barked, sheer annoyance penetrating through her tone. "I'm trying to sleep, Akhen. What could possibly be the cause of such concern," she snapped, mouth down turned into a frown. Eyeing her mate sharply, she barely had time to react before an explosion of rock cascaded through the mountain, sending Akhenaten against the wall.

"My beloved!" Releasing a gravelly shriek best resembling a banshee, the female rose to meet the male. However, he had always been swifter than her. Before a singular movement could be made, he had already picked himself up and coiled around her. As he made an attempt to shield her, her tail had wrapped loosely around him, doing her best to protect him in any way she could. While she could not see due to his wings, she could hear and feel the debris flinging against the mountain. Paired with snarls of frustration, her eyes darted around the male, checking for signs of open wounds.

When the disturbance seemed to slow, Ráijá released a breath of relief, one that seemed to have presented itself too soon. Moments later, a sound no individual wished to hear disrupted her ears. A deep, rumbling sound broke through their cave, creating a crevice in the ceiling. Her eyes had darted to it then, just as a miniature boulder fell, landing upon the ground.

She heard Akhenaten's screams, but she could not see what had occurred. Not until the dust had settled, revealing the rock upon his wing. It trapped him to the ground, preventing his movements. Her neck had coiled at the sight, her lips peeling upwards.

"You dimwit! You clown! Look what you've done to yourself!" She hissed as he unraveled from her. Rising from the grime, she assessed the damage, swatting him in the face with her wing in the process. "You oaf, you could have fractured it! And then what, flop around like a fish in order to get somewhere? I can't believe this," she continued, muttering to herself. "I have half a mind to throw another rock upon your idiotic head. Trying to protect me, were you? Pah, my knight." Spitting her words out, she released a small grunt as she circled him a singular time, only to halt alongside of his pinned down wing.

When he spoke of needing to get the rock off of his wing, she scoffed. "The thought never crossed my mind. Here I believed it was your new accessory." Sarcasm was laced in her tone as she added on before staring at the boulder. Rolling her shoulders a singular time, she tilted her head. "Don't move." Her tone had presented itself moreso as a demand rather than anything else, her gaze settling upon the rock. Doing her best under pressure, the female focused her sights upon the stone. Beneath her gaze, it began to shift itself slowly, rising into the air and hovering momentarily before slamming to her left. It torpedoed against the side with such strength, that it crumbled into miniature pieces once making contact with solid wall.

Advancing, Akhenaten's wing was soon within Ráijá's talons, to which she begun gently maneuvering. "Does anything hurt, dear?" She asked, her tone coming off as much softer. Wing still in her talons, she suddenly swatted at him with her own once more before pressing her forehead against his cheek. "Never do that again," she snapped, voice once more hardened. Stepping back in one swift movement, realization dawned upon her.

"We have to leave this instance." Craning her neck, she looked towards the exit. "The airflow, how is it?" Departing from his side, her figure waddled towards the exit, to which she espied nothing but rubble.

"If it comes to it, we dig."

Fathom
Wind Class // Male // M: Whistler

Snoozing dragons layed fast asleep in the cozy cave stalls, their scales bounced up and down with each breath they took. The torches flickered emitting an orange aura in the room. It was the definition of peaceful, yet Fathom layed awake staring at the stone ceiling above. Something felt off, maybe it was just him being paranoid? The sound of shifting talons came from Akhenaten's stall, maybe something felt off for him as well. Fathom groaned pushing his tired body off of the cool ground, his ears perked listening to the rumbling of the mountain.
Fathom breathed heavily, looking around to see if anyone else was bothered by the increasing rumble. He paced around for a good minute straight, before making up his mind. With a puff of determination, Fathom shakily made his way to Akhenaten's stall. His talons suddenly shook violently as rocks fell down towards him. He yelped jumping back, while a loud crash echoed through his body. Two rocks the size of human heads, crushed his talons, he tried pulling himself free, but a boulder, larger than him, decided to start wiggling. With only seconds to spare, Fathom anxiously yanked his claws out, scraping them in the process.
The boulder fell moments later. It hit the floor exploding into multiple pieces. Fathom's handsome talons were bloody and torn up. He stood practically paralyzed, his brain pounding into his skull. The dust around made it difficult to breathe and see properly. I'm gonna die! Fathom backed himself into a corner, desperately trying to get a glimpse of somebody, anybody!

It's truly amazing how fast things can take a turn for the worse. What started as a peaceful night, was now a dreadful nightmare. Fathom breathed deeply while the world around him faded in and out. Thinking everyone was dead, he was on the verge of tears. Yet finally, a familiar, and recognizable voice spoke out from the debris. "W-histler? Is that you?" He stood silently for a moment, "hold on." And the beast inhaled a deep, crackly, whiff of must air. He exhaled trying to blow the dust away, it didn't do that much good, but it was better than nothing.

"S-sorry," Fathom called in case his wind breath disturbed anyone even more, before he started looking around for the others, well more specifically Whistler. After awhile he managed to find the outline of Whistler pressed against a wall, apparently it is a natural defense mechanism for the wind dragons. Slowly, Fathom limped over towards Whistler, "Are you okay?" He coughed, turning his head in hopes that the others were okay.

The cave was tight around the sleeping form of the goliath dragon. To say the caves were not intended for a dragon of his size was an understatement, as he brushed up against almost each wall despite being tightly curled. When the explosions came, the dragon's form did not immediately shift, used to living in a cavern that resided within a volcano. There, in his home, his actual home, the rumbles and shaking were normal. If anything it was comforting.

However, the more they continued and the more rocks that fell on him, the more he roused and become annoyed. "What in the bloody hell?" He grumbled lowly, his flame colored eyes prying open to glare at the darkness with judgement. What dared to wake him? He lifted his head and uncurled from himself and sniffed gently, taking in the scents around him.

When an explosion above him rocked the mountain he swayed to the side but planted himself so he didn't fall. What on earth was going on? Steam billowed out from his nostrils and the vents on his head, swirling in the dust filled air around him. He growled and ducked out of the cave entrance to the path that curled through the mountain that had been created as a Dragon Keep. He could hear other dragons stirring, a variety of growls and hisses erupting from different caves.

Something was wrong, clearly. Another explosion caused a mild cave in to his left and he stepped away to avoid being hit by any of the debris. Afterwards things began to settle, though he could hear explosions near by, letting him know whatever was happening hadn't stopped, it's focus had just shifted. "Hmm," he murmured, snaking his way forward, heading for the entrance so he could get a better look.

Unfortunately, that didn't seem to be as easy of a plan as he thought. Now sitting where the entrance of the Dragon Keep should be was a massive pile of rocks and blocking his exit from his now prison. "What is the meaning of this?" He spoke to himself, reaching out to move a couple of rocks before huffing in frustration. He could breathe fire on the rocks, but that would turn them to magma and that wouldn't be any good for the dragons within, and could make matters worse. This meant the only thing he could do was start moving rocks, and carefully so they didn't come crashing down. It would be such a tedious process, and that fact pissed the already ill tempered dragon more.
