Ada is what many would say a free soul. She would rather be in the woods, climbing trees or swimming in a lake rather than being stuck inside tending to royal duties. Growing up she was given more freedom to roam and get dirty, but as she has come to age, it is time to prepare for the throne, even if it could be years away. Ada is known for sneaking out of the castle and royal grounds, running rampant through the towns. She loves her people, constantly leaving to help shops and farmers.

She is a kind and caring soul, but she is fierce and hot headed. Her temper can flare like that of a dragon at times even if she does not mean it. And with that temper comes her strength. Growing up and even currently she has trained her mental and physical strength. She is smart, able to come up with quick solutions and is deadly with a sword, who would of thought for a princess.

As dawn approached a loud screech could be heard throughout all kingdoms, a sound not even witches knew what caused it. Waking out of his slumber, Calix gasped and clenched the satin bed sheets that tangled him into bed. Sweat dripped from his damp hair, and his uneasy breath slowly came to a halt as the latter realized…it was just a dream, the same damned dream again. Calix seemed to never be able to escape the night his father and brother died, how he was unable to save them from whatever wandered that enchanted forest…whatever demon haunted it. Calix let out a shaky breath before turning his gaze to look out his bedroom window, it was barely 6 AM and the latter was already wide awake from his unrestful nightmare. The man rolled out of bed and ran a hand through his tangled hair, he peered at himself in the mirror, letting out a grunt he began to get ready for the day as he assumed sleeping more wasn’t going to happen today, Calix had been getting less and less sleep as the week went on, his eye bags were starting to show that in their dark purple tint.

“Calix, breakfast is ready if you’d like some,” His mother’s voice could be heard from the other room, the male sighed once more before he rummaged through his closet and dresser, picking out a decent nice outfit to wear underneath his armor. He was gifted many different armor pieces from the palace, the king seemed to enjoy the other’s skills and he was often on the frontlines in every battle. This was good for Calix’s family, they were treated very greatly and often spoiled by Calix since they didn’t come from much before Calix became a dragon rider. Before Calix got recognized for his riding and combat skills, he was nothing but a regular commoner. Now, his name brings excitement and hope. But Calix made sure to thank the king whenever he got the chance, just to show his gratefulness.

Calix finished getting ready and slipped into his armor for today, the heavy metal jingled as the man walked, to his mother, it was rather annoying. Calix’s mother used to be a kind, outgoing woman but after she lost her son and her husband in battle, she’s become more cold, and quiet. Her once bubbly personality has been withered to nothing more than an emotionless being. Of course, the incident brought the Vaughn family great agony but Calix and his mother seemed to take the death’s heavily…Calix took his personally considering he was fighting alongside them…Though he vowed to himself to not tell a single soul, nor show a single emotion in battle again. He was guilty, and he felt he was to blame for the deaths of his father and brother, though he was not the cause of it by any means.

“I’m going to the castle today with Seze. I got a letter that there is a meeting today, later this afternoon,” Calix said walking into the kitchen, his deep tone echoing throughout the spacious kitchen where his mom was cooking, his sister helping her. His only living brother was nowhere to be seen, though he wasn’t worried since Calix just learned his younger brother got accepted into dragon riding school.

Calix's mother didn’t pay any attention to her son, she was focused on the crumpets she was making and the eggs she was scrambling. His sister, Vienna, offered him a bright smile and nodded her head as she acknowledged her brother’s previous statement. Calix smiled at her and walked over, he stole a piece of bacon from her fingers, causing the young lady to swat at him and growl in annoyance.

“Calix! There’s more on the plate why are you stealing mine!?” The younger whined as she pointed to the plate, brows furrowing.

“Why do that when you have some too, plus you’re closer!” The latter teased as he poked Vienna’s forehead, sticking his tongue out a little.

“You’re so dumb, go to the castle already!”

“Alright, alright! I’m heading out now,” Calix purred playfully as he waved, walking out the front door with a handful of bacon, and a piece of toast in his mouth.

The latter let out a loud whistle which was followed by a giant, white-scaled creature landing beside him, it snorted and shook his head, peering down at Calix. The man smiled up at the dragon before him before climbing on her back, the scaly being grumbled and flicked her tail before taking off into the sky at a great speed, Calix locked his feet into the saddle, he got comfortable before looking forward, watching the passing scenery while slowly disappearing into the clouds.

The castle was already alive in the early morning hours as the sun started to peak over the horizon, its rays glistening over the golden accents that lined the castle’s stone walls. Servants shuffled through corridors and rooms, this particular morning being spent on preparing for the upcoming tournament the following day. Though the event did not start til tomorrow, many guests who were to travel would be arriving that day so they were well rested. The Kingdom of Reyes held this event every year, a test of skills with a bit of fun. There was to be jousting, sword fights, archery and more, the typical events men proclaimed their skills for. The King was a sucker for these tournaments, it brought so much joy, plus a large feast and wines.

While most servants were occupied with the hustle and bustle of the events to come, most of them beyond ecstatic for a change, the princess was annoyed. Adalia knew this was the time of the year she had to put on a pretty smile and be shown around to the neighboring princes and knights as if she was a prize, she hated it. Having to fake the enjoyment as her father tried to find her an escort. Adalia was a free soul, she wanted to find love her way and not be matched with some idiot prince. She wanted someone that wouldn't tie her down and keep her locked inside to just bear children. She wanted to roam the lands, meet her people, gallop the fields….ride a dragon. She knew the latter would never happen, it was forbidden for a royal, let alone the princess, to be that close to one of those beasts. Of course they were admired by the kingdom, but they had a mind of their own, one movement could end the bloodline.

Adalia currently sat on her upholstered stool, daydreaming out the window as the early sun rose. Her ladies in waiting attended to her needs, adorning her skin with jewelry, one carefully brushing and styling her hair. She braided some strands back in an intricate pattern that cascaded down her back and shoulders. Soon Adalia was dressed in her normal day garbs, a stunning red and gold dress and cape that sat right at the floor. The embroidery was one of immense skill and the clasp that held her cape made of gold, the family crest of a dragon upon it. After her ladies in waiting left, she sat in the alcove of her room at a small table, picking at the breakfast she was served. The assortment of fresh fruits and pastries would be lavish for any common folk, but Adalia was never hungry in the mornings. Most of the time if she could sneak out she would bring it to someone in town during her journeys.

Adalia knew there was to be a meeting today, one her father told her several times was not one to attend, it was for the men. That infuriated her. She was to be the heir and she was still left out on meetings that could help her reign, what an idiotic idea. Adalia passed the time by reading, well mostly watching out her window at the world beyond, but there were a few chapters read. She knew the time was coming when she heard the rumble from the skies, the air seeming to vibrate as a large, white beast flew above the town and castle. Calix had arrived. Years ago the two had been friends, his father being a favorite of the King. But that was years ago. The two had come of age and had not spoken since besides simple greetings when their paths crossed. Adalia always had admired Calix and his skills, but also was jealous that he had bonded with a dragon, one of her dreams. Adalia knew that since Calix had arrived, the meeting was soon to start. She huffed, closing her book and setting it aside as she stood, entering the stone halls of the castle.

All the men who had been summoned to the meeting met in the King’s study, the room filled with old texts, carved designs and trophies from hunts. A large carved wooden table sat in the middle surrounded by chairs, to the right a large map of the kingdom. The men had taken their seats, a servant filling their chalices with wine or mead as the King began his meeting. It was not long into the King’s speech when he was interrupted by the sound of the wooden doors opening.

What is the meaning of this interruption?” He asked, his voice booming as he stood. A guard entered, only to be moved to the side as the princess entered. She walked in swiftly, her hands clasped in front of her as she held her posture tall.
Please father, continue.” She said as she slipped towards the empty seat at the other end of the table, Calix to her right.

Adalia, I told you this meeting did not involve….” He began, his daughter cutting him off once again. “I know you told me, but if this is to be my Kingdom after your reign, I deserve to be involved in any meeting, how else am I to learn? Even if it is a simple silly meeting about a tournament." Adalia took her seat, thanking the servant that moved forward to fill her chalice. “Now please, continue” She said, still sitting tall as her father’s brows furrowed. He sighed harshly but continued, giving up to the stubborn girl.

Calix was quick to enter the palace and make his way through every corridor until he got to the King’s study room where other guards and servants already sat. It had been a little while since he stepped foot in the castle’s walls, it seemed more boring now that his father’s excited voice didn’t ring in his ears. Shaking his head to rid his mind of all the unnecessary thoughts, his stone-cold expression didn’t shift when he sat down. Instead, he cleared his throat and quietly greeted the king. Stares from around the room burned holes into Calix but he kept his cold, serious demeanor despite his anxiety ripping him a new one on the inside. Calix cleared his throat once more and fixed himself in the seat before removing his helmet, setting the heavily armed rider’s helmet on the table, he fixed his tangled waves before turning his full attention to the king when the meeting began.

Calix listened tentatively learning about the rules for this year's tournament and all that fun jazz. It wasn’t anything new to hear so he got rather bored…rather quickly. When’s this shit going to end? I’ve got shit I need to do. Calix thought in annoyance before his attention was drawn to the doors, hearing them open he watched as a guard was beginning to walk in but was shoved aside by a….magnificent woman. Calix’s eyes blinked in surprise for a moment before his face returned to the same serious expression as before. He watched Adalia, he watched her every step. The woman who he once knew a long time ago, has aged well. She was stunning…she was confident. Calix admired the princess for her guts to go against the king’s orders. She was brave, he’ll give her that. Calix was always too pussy to go against what the king said, which is mostly why he fights alongside the kingdom with his dragons. He was one of the few riders left who had an authentic bond with his dragon, to be fair, he did raise all three from eggs, but that’s beside the point.

Calix turned his gaze back to the king, he listened to the king’s interaction with his daughter, still the same old man that he knew from when they were close…years ago when his father was…still around. The latter listened to the princess’s footsteps and calculated each step in his head of where she was moving, his body tensed when he heard the footsteps stop beside him. He listened as the chair moved as she sat beside him, he was nervous. Why is she sitting here? Beside me? Oh fuck...do I stink? The rider thought nervously as he scooted his chair away slightly, giving the woman more room to sit at the table. His heart thumped against his armor and he was sure it could be heard from every in the room, though, Seze had her nose poking through one of the windows, purring as she seemed to notice Calix’s mood change from annoyed to nervous, the beast was definitely enjoying exposing the other even though only he, himself could hear her thoughts. Calix glared at Seze, seemingly communicating with his thoughts.

The dragon rider turned his head back to the king when he started mentioning battle tactics and ways for them to have the upper hand, which they already had considering they had someone who had the surprise of flight, for all the enemies know, dragons are still untamable beasts. Calix looked between Seze and the king before slowly glancing at Adalia, he watched her and admired her confidence…as well as her beauty. She looked gorgeous in red, Calix remembered loving seeing that color on her when they were younger…now that he’s older he really liked that color on her. It made her look godly…Calix turned away as he started nibbling on his bottom lip nervously. He sighed softly before he folded his hands in front of him, he listened to the king speak and turned to look at Adalia when she spoke.

“Sir, with all due respect, if I use that move before the enemy reaches the marker we had discussed, Seze and the other dragons might cause heavy damage to the kingdom itself. I suggest we take the southern troops and lead them up in between this mountain passageway. Seze and I will watch from afar, once the southern troops give the signal of the enemy being nearby Seze and I will take it from there, one of the dragons will stay behind to help carry the wounded back to the palace, and the last one will act as backup with the western and northern troops who are defending the southern side of the castles territory. That way, we minimize damage to our kingdom while also defeating the enemy,” Calix interrupted.

The dragon rider drew a circle on the map in front of him of where he was talking about, the latter seemed to know what he was doing by the sound of it, it was still a mystery how he managed to become such a skilled rider in a short amount of time many say it was fate, other’s say he sold his soul to the dark oak elves in the enchanted forest to get better skills, when in reality he just taught himself after his father and brother passed away, grief was enough to fuel his motivation to become the best dragon rider warrior there ever was…and he was certainly making a name for himself already considering he was already very wellknown across the kingdom and it’s neighboring territories.

Adalia paid no mind to the men she sat with, her emotionless expression locked onto the map in front of them as she studied the details and plans. Her eyes had carefully taken in every piece and where they laid, how each man described the tactics and it just made her chuckle internally. Adalia was a well educated woman, she was clever, knew the movements of people, how they would react, everything. It gave her an upper hand when it came to learning battle tactics. The men bantered between each other as men did, ignoring the fact they were amongst a lady, their future Queen.

Adalia looked to Calix and then to the dragon who tried to peek in, its soft purr still strong enough to vibrate the stones. It was quite amazing to see the bond in action, and to see such a creature up close but Adalia shook her thoughts away and focused once more. She lifted her chalis to her lips and took a small sip, the red wine a staple at her age with the stress she dealt with. Soon Calix began to speak, carefully interrupting her father as he described his suggested plan. Adalia watched him silently, her eyes following his hand as he traced the plan. He was very skilled, he knew his role and how to do it, but Adalia saw a fatal flaw within seconds.

The princess stood just as he had silenced, moving around the table to get a better look at the map. She now stood across from Chalix, slipping her form between two of the other men.

If we lead our men through the mountain passageway, we are trapping them on all sides except back. Both sides are blocked by the steep terrain, as well as beginning frost and ice of the coming cool months. Our forward side is blocked by the enemy. The only way out is back, which leads them straight to Reyes.” Adalia began, her eyes looking to Chalix as she spoke strong but eloquently. She leaned forward, moving a few metal chess pieces custom made for the battle map.

I suggest we station one of your dragons and yourself at the entrance of the passageway. You hide a good distance away so you will not be found, or keep to the skies above the clouds. We keep our other men at the exit. Lure the enemy into the middle and they are trapped. A dragon behind them and our men in front of them. That way they are trapped on all sides.” She said, her eyes flicking back to the map as she moved the pieces in the motion she described. “We find a way to trick them into thinking we are coming through the passageway, that way we do not cause unneeded deaths of our men.” She added as she stood back up tall.

The room was silent for a moment, all the men looking at her before one another. Had this young female truly come up with a smarter plan? How was it possible, one from a woman, a child in their eyes, two from someone so inexperienced with battle. Adalia kept her composure, her face still holding no emotion before she returned to her seat, taking a sip of wine. She looked to the men as they whispered to one another, still quite shocked in the moment.

Calix listened to her speak, he nodded his head to her suggestions and he watched her movements, he liked the way she thought and he definitely liked her plan. She was a smart woman, one of the many features that was beginning to distract the dragon rider from what he should be thinking about with an upcoming battle. The latter looked to the map and peered up at Adalia once she was finished speaking, he followed her with his eyes as she made her way back to the side of him, he couldn’t help but feel proud that she chose to sit next to him. He felt honored as a matter of fact. Adalia was definitely feisty, he remembered from their younger days, though he was growing curious to see it more in action now that the pair were older…adults at that. His interest in the princess grew but just then he vowed to never let it, or anything interfere with his work and duty protecting the kingdom from harm's way.

“My lady, you have a good point. We’ll do that then, keep the casualties to zero, hopefully,” Calix responded, his tone was deep, yet calming. Calix nodded his head before turning his gaze back to the king. He tilted his head slightly, in a curious manner. He wanted to know what the old man was thinking, he looked as if he was pondering, or at least in deep thought about something.

Calix leaned back in his seat and spread his legs just slightly, allowing for some sort of air to move throughout the heavy armor coating his body. The latter played with his helmet before remembering that he was in a business setting and that he needed to remain focused in case he missed anything important being said, Calix sighed softly and sat his helmet beside him on the floor so he wouldn’t be so tempted to mess with it or anything else. Calix turned to Adalia, he studied her expression and took in her tone, he also couldn’t help but notice how divine she smelt, he was tempted to ask her what perfume it was but he held himself back and stayed silent in his seat. Seze removed her nose from the window and shook her head, causing a light vibration. She cooed and grumbled before huffing warm air into the room everyone was gathered in. Calix furrowed his brows, confused as to why Seze seemed so anxious all of a sudden, she was usually as calm as Calix was during these meetings, highly unusual for her specifically to be so vocal and needy.

Calix narrowed his pale eyes Seze, listening to her coos, deciphering what each one meant until his stomach twisted and he shook his head, his expression colder than ever. He motioned his hand upwards and Seze took off in a blink of an eye, minutes later a piercing screech from the highest depths of the sky could be heard, it was Seze, seemingly warning anything nearby. Calix tensed up in his seat and he started to look visibly uncomfortable. Was it because of Seze? Did Seze tell him something? No one but Calix knew what Seze wanted, it was something Calix knew she could deal with but he just wanted to be there and be done with this meeting. Though, he knew if there was truly something along the borders of the kingdom that shouldn’t be, the guards would’ve let them know already...Seze was probably sensing something else…right?

"Sir, is the princess going to be present in battle?" Calix asked the king but then turned to Adalia and winced ever so slightly.

"Are you going to fight on the ground or in the air? Or are you just the pretty mastermind behind it all?" Calix's deep tone rumbled through the air, his strong gaze meeting Adaline's. His pale eyes locked with her ocean-like orbs, he made intense eye contact, the seriousness slithering off his tongue as he tilted his head a little, causing a few strands of messy hair to fall in front of his face. He shocked himself with what he asked her, and it came out rather snippily rather than attractively which wasn't what he was going for, but the attitude he gave the princess was attractive in a way of its own though he meant to harm.

The men’s hushed whispers soon all came to nods of agreement. It was quite a surprise to receive praise from her father as well, and was that a hint of a smile upon his lips? Adalia knew she was correct, she knew her plan would be the safest. Adalia’s gaze moved to Calix’s as he praised her as well, agreeing with her plan and that they would follow it. She kept her calm expression upon her face but inside she was exploding with joy. Finally she had recognition and was heard, finally someone listened to her voice.

Adalia’s eyes followed his gaze as the beast just outside the castle became agitated. Her warm breath filled the room as the stones vibrated once again. Adalia’s brows furrowed, she could sense something was off by both the creature and the expression upon Calix’s features. He did not seem to be utterly concerned, for if he was surely he would have excused himself. Lately there had been an odd feeling surrounding the kingdom, word of a dark presence in the forests. The forests were off limits to all, whether it be guards or townspeople. Too many had entered and never returned. There was nothing they could do, an invisible force being fought by knights and dragons? It was a joke. For now they kept their people safe by staying in the open and in their Kingdom.

Adalia looked to Calix once more as he questioned her father, asking if she would be fighting alongside her men. She let out a chuckle, holding herself back from a full bout of laughter. Adalia fighting? As if her father would let her.

Well father? Am I to defend my Kingdom?” She asked, tilting her head a bit but also giving a joking tone, she knew the answer.

Of course not, the heir will be here safe in the castle alongside her mother. The battlefield is no place for a woman” he said, his brows furrowing as he looked to his daughter. Adalia simply chuckled, sitting back in her seat with a smile.

No place for a woman who has more skills, strength and sense than half the young men in the training fields practicing right now” she replied, knowing it would just enrage her father. She looked to Calix as he questioned her herself, his snippy tease only causing her brows to furrow a bit. The ground or the air? He must be kidding, royals were not to be near a dragon. Though his quip of being a pretty mastermind only fueled the spark in her chest.

This ‘pretty mastermind’ would be glad to find land, air or sea at the front lines” she said, her voice softening in volume just a bit as she leaned forward. “And though my father says I shall not, I will be seeing you all there” she added, her eyes leaving his as she looked to the other men. Boy did she have a fire for a heart. The princess sat back up, pushing her chair back as she stood. “Good day men” Adalia said simply, all the lords and hands standing as she turned and headed out of the room, her heels clicking as she traveled down the halls.

The king simply signed after she left, shaking his head. “She is going to be the death of me rather than battle or age” he joked. He knew his daughter was a handful, but she had his spirit and he could not blame her.

Adalia traveled through the corridors before she slipped through a servants door and made her way outside to the courtyards. She took a deep breath of the fresh morning air, its cool breeze slipping across her skin. A smile pulled at her lips, still pleased with the small outcome she had gained from the day. Now that her goal was done, she decided to continue with her normal daily tasks. Mainly training. She made her way towards the training yards where many younger men practiced their skills. It was common to see the princess here, the king giving up on stopping her years before. Grabbing a sword she watched a few of the men practice before stepping in herself. Her swings and blocks were strong, her feet swift and careful even in a dress. Her blows were harsh, sensing a strong vibration through the metal as the sharp sound of metal rang out. A smile pulled even more at her lips with each strike, oh how freeing this felt.

Calix watched the woman before him, a small, proud smile began to tug on the latter’s face as he listened to her, he could hear how passionate she was about defending her kingdom and how badly she wanted to. The latter admired her bravery greatly, her mention of seeing him on the battlefield filled him up with a funny feeling, one that went down his spine, sending shutters through almost all parts of his body. He nodded his head, he was curious to see her, though he knew he’d be keeping a close eye on the woman, making sure she was untouched by all no matter the costs. Something about her fighting alongside him made him both nervous for her, and hot for her. He blinked and turned his gaze away from Adalia, he listened as he walked out of the room and down the hallway. Calix looked to the king as he spoke, he nodded at the other’s remark about the princess being a handful, Calix knew that all too well from their childhood. The memory of the two running around the garden flooded his mind but he was forced to draw himself out of it.

“She definitely is something…she’s strong too, ever consider letting her ride a dragon? Not for battle…but for fun?” Calix asked the king, curiosity lingered in his voice as he fiddled with his fingers, growing bored of the meeting knowing it was coming to an end by the way everyone was chatting and starting to rise from their seats.

After a good thirty minutes of chatting with the king Calix made his way out of the palace, he went through the back way so there was more open space for Seze to land. He passed the training grounds, stopping for a moment Calix watched Adalia, she moved gracefully…and beautifully. Calix almost wanted to hop in the ring and fight against her knowing she’d put up a good fight. The latter, however, controlled himself and he watched for a minute longer before turning on his heels and quickly walking away from the grounds, reaching the gardens he took a sharp left and let out that loud, familiar whistle. Coming shortly after the whistle was that white-scaly beast diving from the sky at such a high speed it was almost unseeable. The large beat squealed and swooped down allowing Calix to be able to jump up and slide himself across Seze’s wing and into the saddle before she swiftly flapped those powerful wings of hers and flew higher. The latter let out a little excited yell and after Seze let out her familiar excited screech.

Calix flew for a while before he reached the passageway they were discussing in the previous meeting, scanning the unknown territory for any pros and cons, where to hide the troops, the fastest escape route, and a place for Seze and him to hide away without being seen from above or on the ground. Calix always liked getting a game plan ready in his head for any upcoming battles, it was safer for him and the dragons, and for the kingdom’s warriors. He didn’t like causing any unnecessary bloodshed…he learned to be much more cautious about that part after his father and brother…that day was one of the worst days in Reyes's history, at least to him it was.

Calix flew around for a while longer, seemingly to patrol the borders of the kingdom before he decided to head back to the ground. After he settled safely, he removed his armor and carefully placed it back onto his stand. His sister watched his every move with narrowed eyes, she sensed something was up, and weirdly enough she always seemed to know whenever Calix had something on his mind. The latter turned to her when he was done, crossing his arms over his chest leaning against the doorway, and raising a curious brow, he wondered what Vienna was thinking about. As far as Calix knew, he was hiding his worry and fatigue fairly well, though maybe not.

"What's with that look? What did I do now?" Calix huffed, running a hand through his wavy locks, attempting to untangle them for the time being. Vienna rolled her eyes at Calix before walking over to the kitchen table and sitting down in one of the chairs.

"You look worried as fuck and you haven't said one word since you got home!" Vienna growled folding her arms over one another on the table.

"Vienna Marie Lynn. You watch what you say in this house," Their mother hollered from another room causing Calix to snicker a little as Vienna huffed and puffed in annoyance. She rolled her eyes again before looking away, pouting almost.

"I'm not worried about anything other than work. No need to worry V, if it was truly anything worrisome I'd have told you guys, by now," Calix reassured his little sister as he walked over to her, patting her and messing up her wavy-brown hair causing the younger to whine and smack his hand away from her.
