The Ruined City

In all the centuries they've existed, never did humans think their final day would ever come. They thought that, when the disease swept through the lands, plaguing the cities in a dark cloud of gloom, they would be the last one standing. Never did they expect that they would be the first to fall.

Like flies, the humans fell, one after another as they succumbed to the virus. Around them their beloved pets, and the strays of the street, watched as the human species dwindled down, leaving behind a history of destruction and madness. Unlike the humans, the pets didn't fall, something about their domesticated genes protected them against the illness' wrath. Unfortunately for them, this protection would be both a blessing and a curse.

As the dead rise, animals who used to live the easily life, and those who didn't, are having to struggle even more and fight even harder just to survive. Their DNA might allow them never to mutate from the virus, but it doesn't keep the infected from tearing them to shreds. In a time like no others, animals of all types are going to have to learn to get over age old rivalries in order to survive.

The Roleplay Rules
Follow all of WP's and Eve's Rules.
1. Be Active. This should be self explanatory. Inactivity for Four Days without Proper Notice will Result in being Kicked.
2. All Reservations last 48 Hours, and then the spot opens back up.
3. No Wolf Dogs or Wild Breeds of Dogs or Cats. Do Not Ask.
4. Please show respect towards everyone in the Rp.
5. Let's start with 4 Characters Maximum, I may elect to change that over time though. And I may make exceptions.
6. Be realistic about colors, genetics, size etc. I don't want to see a 4 lbs cat killing a 60 lbs dog.
7. Remember: They can't turn into zombies but they CAN be killed by them.
8. Orphaned Kittens and Puppies are allowed, however you must also have an adult character to Roleplay too. Orphans also must find someone to care for/help them within a week in Rp or they'll be killed.
9. Tell me if you prefer cats or dogs in your form if you've read this far.
10. Characters can either be former Owned Pets or Strays, their backstory is up to you to make.
11. Wild Animals are sometimes affected by the virus, so there will be mutated animals as well that pose threats to our characters. Please read everything to learn more.
12. You may use Art or Stock for Appearances [along with a description] just be sure to follow WP's rules when doing so.
13. Have Fun!

The Setting

The City
This roleplay will take place in an abandoned city left in ruin and disarray. The city wasn't necessary abandoned, all of it's human occupants were infected. Because of this, the undergrowth, the forest, the breath of mother nature, has taken over the city, turning half of it to rubble. There are still whole buildings, but the city is nothing like it used to be, a mere shell of it's former glory.

Zombies still roam the city, though there are places they occupy the most. Large buildings, like the hospital, schools, malls, are often found with hoards of zombies lingering within their confines. These are places the animals will need to avoid if they hope for survival, as there are just too many hungry jaws to avoid. However, buildings like grocery stores, apartment complexes, and the pound are surprisingly vacant. There seems to be no rhyme or reason why they are, but they offer a bit of solace for large groups of animals.

Of course, there are other buildings in the city, especially residential neighborhoods that are safer. The houses, if they are empty, tend to remain that way if the doors are closed. The streets, though, vary day to day, so it is always best for animals who reside in the vacant homes to be careful when venturing out.

Forests have also crept closer to the city, surrounding and infiltrating it with haste. This brings a whole new host of threats for the pets. Mutated and normal animals are venturing further and further into the city in search of sustenance and shelter, their own safety at risk because fo the zombies they now must survive with. To them, cats and dogs are nothing more than a meal, and they will try to kill them should they have the chance to.

The Zombies
These are the infected humans who were wiped out by the virus. They are mindless, bloodthirsty creatures. There are no thoughts in their minds, just the instinctual drive to hunt and kill anything that moves that isn't one of them. They do not discriminate, as they do not have the means to, so if something catches their attention, you can bet they will go after it.

Of course, they aren't without their faults. Since they are practically mindless, they do not have the ability to think strategically. If they are chasing something, they will do just that: follow. They won't try to cut it off, or run ahead, and they won't see it coming if they are lead into a trap. They will never pick up a weapon, and instead only use their hands and teeth as weapons.

And, as with anything that rots, their bodies slowly deteriorate. It isn't a fast process, but they will slowly decompose with time, nature's way of righting a wrong it created. Of course, it isn't a fast enough process to make a difference, but sometimes, luck is in an animals favor if the leg of a zombie chasing them convienently falls apart, giving them the break they need. It also means that, if a fight breaks out, specific areas that are falling apart can be targeted so an animal can get the upper hand.

There is one other disadvantage the zombies have. Light. Oddly enough, the sun worsens their condition, and for some unknown reaosn they are almost inactive during the day. Often they will retreat to buildings, or shadows, to hide for the day. Of course, this makes the night incredibly dangerous, as they are much more active, ravenous, and their feral cries can be heard throughout the night. It's during this time that they are at their most dangerous.

The Zombies rely heavily on their sense of hearing, though sense of smell is close behind. However, their eye sight, unless it's a fresh zombie, is almost nonexistent. The only time their eye sight is useful for them, is when they are able to see something moving. Yet, if it movies to quickly out of their line of sight, they may lose it and, thus, eventually lose interest. That being said, zombies can rely on the vocalization of others to locate prey, so if one is on something's tail and is vocalizing, there is bound to be others who join eventually.

For those wondering, or have more questions about the zombies, I hope this helps. Most of the zombies aren't terribly fast, they're certainly not Usain Bolt, however, there are a few of them, typically the humans who were infected later on and had more athletic inclinations, that can actually run quite quickly. These are, without a doubt, the most dangerous of the zombies when it comes to being chased. They aren't very coordinated, and can often be out manuevered, but they do run fast. And, since they do not tire, trying to out run one in a straight line isn't going to end well. You'll be better of trying to lose it in a maze of twists and turns, or getting to higher ground and moving on. Again, though, these zombies, just dubbed as 'Runners' [I'm creative, I know], aren't common. In a hoard of zombies you might find one, maybe two at most.

There is one thing to keep in mind though, the zombies were infected by a disease. Diseases mutate. It's a wonder of how things are going to change instead of if they will.

Auset;

Gender:

Species & Breed:
Cat;
Domestic Shorthair

Owned or Stray:
She was an Owned Cat Pre Virus

Appearance:

Auset is an interestingly colored feline, having a tabby and white coat. The tabby portion of her coat is that of a black tabby, with heavy, contrasting markings, which is primarily along her sides, back, tail, and head. However, there are patches of it in other places. She is a shorthaired feline, with a soft and thick coat that is perfect for nestling against on cold nights. Her eyes are a pale yellow-green, like a pale chartreuse. Her scent is of something zesty, like lemongrass, but with a bit of extra lemon. She also has long, hooked claws that she is an expert in using. Auset is also a rather petite female, and only weighs about 8 lbs on a good day, though closer to 7 lbs is her norm on the street.

While Auset is a small feline, she is absolutely fierce and doesn't hesitate to try and intimidate or scratch those much bigger than her. She doesn't fear other cats, even larger ones, as she is confident in her abilities. The female does have her fair share of scars, but many of them are faded and difficult to see.

Personality:

Auset is a female with a kind but fierce soul. She is compassionate and caring to those who mean something to her, like her friends, mate and kittens, and is quite dedicated to them. However, do not mistake her for being soft, as she will fiercely defend her family, and those she cares for, with her life. She has a bit of a mature, aloof aura to her, as she doesn't tolerate disrespect or nonsense, but she's also capable of relaxing and watching as others are having a good time. She absolutely loves to watch her kits play, and will even participate too.

Born to the streets, Auset is quite intelligent and quick witted, able to think on her feet and get out of sticky situations in a flash. She is also a noteable little hunter, and has no problems stepping in to help provide for her little family. She will even help out others too if she deems it necessary.

That being said, Auset has a disdain for most dogs and humans, and is mildly terrified and disgusted by the zombies. She knows theyre dangerous and will avoid them as much as possible. Instead, Set prefers to stay in at night, where she is safe and only venture during the day. There are very few things that could convince the female to venture out at night when the zombies are at their most active.

History:
Auset was born onto the streets as a stray, and raised there for most of her life. However, do not mistake her for a feral cat, she was quite friendly and tolerant of humans once she trusted them. Of course, she was wary of them at first, but because she would warm up, a couple took an interest in her and took her in off the street, her along with her mate. Unbeknowst to them, she was pregnant at the time, but rather than trying to get rid of her and her unborn offspring, they cared for her until her time came. This was not her first litter, so the feline was experience and the birth went easy. Of course, by then the virus has begun to take hold, and shortly after her kittens birth, her humans left, hoping to get away from the virus, and never returned. Just to be safe, Auset returned to the streets and moved her kittens to a safer place in more secure house, hoping it would be a better place to raise her young.

Crush:

Mate:
None

Offspring:
She is Open to 3-4 Kittens

Affiliations:

Alice/Valda - This is a female she knew prior to being taken in by the human couple. She had traveled with her a bit, and taken comfort in her presence. She had tried to convince her to join her with the humans, but Valda had been too scarred by humans to trust them. So, when the virus hit, the first thing she did was go out and find her friend, and she's kept her close ever since. The two are close friends.

Name:
Zeke;
Commonly goes by Zeke, but also Zee/Ze too

Age:
2 & 1/2 Years

Gender:
Female

Species & Breed:
Dog;
King Shepherd

Owned or Stray:
Owned

Appearance:

Credit Belongs to Zurkia on DA. Stock Image.

Zeke is a female who, by every means, is often mistaken for exactly what she looks like: a german shepherd dog. However, she is actually a King Shepherd, a rather new breed of dog bred to look like the GSD counterparts, but larger. She stands at 27 inches at the shoulder, and with a robust build, weighs at about 100 lbs, though she will gain a bit more to max out at 110 lbs by the time she is three. The female is true to her breed, a muscular dog with deep chest, and a body that is longer than she is tall, giving her a powerful build that might be intimidating to others. She has a large, skull that is well defined and a short muzzle that gives her a balanced look. Her ears are triangular in appearance and alway stand erect upon her head. Overall, build wise, the female has a powerful physique that makes it evident it would be a mistake to challenge her.

Her coat is medium in length with straight, dense fur that is both soft to the touch, and useful in protecting her when it comes to a fight. Getting through her fur to penetrate the skin beneath is a difficult task. Her base coat is a pale creamy color that has a golden hue to it, a color commonly known as fawn. She has the trademark GSD markings, a black saddle and mask, the saddle continuing down her back and the top of her tail before it ends with the tip. The female has very pale fur along her belly, the beginning of her chest, and the underside of the base of her tail. There are places along her shoulders, hindlegs, and flanks where the fawn becomes a darker tan too. Overall, a more traditional color like a German Shepherd, perhaps a bit lighter though.

Her eyes are a dark brown color, the only color a King Shepherd's eyes are accepted as for the time being. They are dark chocolate in color, but not so dark as to appear black. There is a very rich hue to them that seem to enrapture those who meet them, awing them with her compassionate but composed look until she turns them into a look that is colder and harder than steel. Her scent is something more akin to honeysuckle and fresh air.

Not Pictured:
The female has recently healed wounds along her shoulders and sides that her fur hides. There are times where they are still sensitive, which is what usually gives them away. Otherwise, the pink flesh of the scars if relatively hidden among dense fur. The female doesn't talk about them though, and you're better off not asking.

Personality:
Zeke is a young female, and so much of her personality is still in development. However, her primary traits seem to be friendliness, openness, and dependability. Upon further inspection, though, there is something haunted about the female. A quiet apprehension within her bones that tells those around her she has seen things, done things that have made her doubt her view of the world. To strangers, those who just take her at a glance, she is a calm female who is outwardly more friendly, even a bit playful if she is comfortable or among friends. A dog who is reliable and dependable, someone a friend could lean on when needed, and look to for help or protection. There is a courageous selflessness about Zeke that can cause others to just want her to be on their side.

A deeper look, though, would reveal other things, minute tendacies that might otherwise go overlooked. Apprehensive and wary, Zee always seems to investigate a situation rather than just go in blind if she can. Sometimes, yes, she will just run in, however, if she can feel it out first, she will. There are moments, mere seconds, where the female will hesitate, the desire to protect herself flinching through her mind, before she pushes it aside in order to help others. It's one of the reasons she was chosen as a protection dog: she needed to put those in her charge first, over her own safety.

Zeke is a lovable dog, for the most part, and she likes nothing more than to be around those she cares about, the ones she enjoys. They lighten up the world, bringing back the memory of how she used to see her world. It's when she is alone, though, that a darker side of the female comes out. A tinge of dark, depressiveness clings to the fringes of her mind, causing her to become sullen and quiet, distant from the world around her. There are even times when it causes the female to lash out, or become aggressive in times when it isn't necessarily called for. This darkness that has edged into her heart has caused her to be a bit unpredictable at times, and can cause a few mood swings too, if she can't get out of her head. Most of the time she's alone when she is like this, and prefers it this way, but when someone comes across her after she's already in a mood, they are subject to however she feels at that point.

Truthfully, the female likely needs someone she feels she can protect again to get back to where she's been. A lingering feeling that she failed causing feelings of worthlessness to crawl in and claim a space within her mind. Now, all she desires is to prove otherwise.

History:
Zeke was born of a litter in the United States, coming from carefully crafted lines of King Shepherds in hopes of creating the best possible pups. As she grew older, she began to train for her chosen specialization: Protection. Her breeders believed she would excel as a personal protection dog, and as soon as she could, began training her so she could be the best she could be. And she was glorious. Every task she was given, she learned and blew out of the water. She lived for it, loved it entirely. So, when she was just under 2 years old, she had the fundamentals of what she needed to be a protection dog, whoever bought her would have to put forth more training for her as she aged.

Quickly she was bought by a wealthy man as a Personal Protection dog for he and his family, as he had gained several enemies through being a lawyer. He was primarily concerned that someone would go after his two young daughters or his wife, so she was kept at the house to protect them, and was taken any place she could to keep them safe.

Zeke fell in love with the family. She loved being doted on by the daughters, and even being dressed up like a princess or a fairy, whatever it was that put smiles on their face, and laughs in the air. She loved being a silent strength for the wife whenever she got stressed out, someone she could depend on without having to feel weak. Zee also loved being the reliable canine, so much so that it helped the man breathe easier whenever he left the house, knowing there was a soul out there that would give their last breath if it meant protecting his family. Zeke loved it all.

And then it ended.

The virus came, and she watched the world deteriorate, and she fought even harder to keep her family safe. One day, when the man came home, she could sense something was wrong. He had come home early, and seemed off. His smell was acrid, body sweaty like he had gone running in the afternoon with 100% humidity. She had been careful, wary, as she followed him around, keeping herself between him and his family. She hadn't understood the danger they were all in at the time.

That night, just after dinner, while the kids were settling in for a movie, he came lumbering in, breathing raggedly. There was something rotten about him that broke her heart as she laid in front of the tv. She sensed it before she saw it, the change in him. And then he had let out a shrill, almost shrieking growl, and lunged for the girls...

After the incident, the mother and the daughters fled, leaving her behind as the virus took hold of the city. Life was never the same from then, and she's spent every moment trying to survive, making herself believe her girls, her family, was alive and safe somewhere, no matter what anyone says.

Name:

Valda;
Was given the name "Alice" when she was adopted by humans.
Age:
4.5 Years
Gender:
Female
Species & Breed:
Dog
Unknown Mix, Suspected Rottweiler, Bullmastiff, and Pittie Mix
Aroma:
Honeysuckle and freshly upturned earth.
Appearance:

Credits on Image, but Background by DarkBeforeDawn23 on DA. Dog Stock by Seidon-Stock on DA. Combined to make One Image by Yours Truly.

Valda is a larger female, one who takes heavily after her Rottweiler or Bullmastiff half in terms of size. Standing at exactly 26 inches, she is slightly larger than your average female, who range from about 22 to 26 inches for the breeds she's suspected to be mixed of, with a well muscled build. She is a larger female with a powerful frame, however, she isn't a bulky female, hinting that a leaner breed is in her lineage. She does often resemble more of a male in appearance, not having overly feminime features. She has a broad head, long, muscular legs, and massive paws.

Valda has a brindled appearance, her medium brown coat that holds a twinge of read being heavily striped with black brindling. In some places, the black is all the can be seen, while, in others, the brown clearly shines through. The only portion of her that isn't brindled is her chest where the fur is white, which creates a stark contrast to the dark fur of her base coat. Upon her face, her muzzle and ears are almost entirely black, giving her almost a masked look, but the brindling on the rest of her face downplays it. The female also has a pair of dark brown eyes that are about the color of dark chocolate, maybe a shade lighter.

Scar wise, the female has her fair share, but not as much as other dogs. Most of her scars have faded, and are easily covered by the brindling of her pelt, but when looking closely, it's entirely possible to see the scars on her body. Most of them are all evidence of her having been attacked at some point by other dogs. (The scars are not pictured)

Valda does wear a faded burgundy collar (not pictured) from when she used to be owned. It's loose, and hangs low on her neck, and is easily removed when needed. She doesn't enjoy talking about it, but she hasn't had the heart yet to leave it entirely behind.
Personality:
Alice, or Valda, is a quite and reserved female, one who likes to keep to herself and away from others. It's easy to see the female is jaded, and doesn't trust very easily at all. Valda prefers to be left alone, and will actively avoid not only violence, but also interaction in general, which tends to make others believe she is shy. There is also something innately sad about the female, like she always has a cloud of sorrow lingering above her head. Her past experiences have left her believing that good things never last, and that others will always end up hurting you, even if it wasn't their intention.

She hates violenced, and it is very rare to ever find her participating in it. If she is fighting, it's likely to protect someone else, or because she has just been pushed too far. Valda has a bit of patience, but not asmuch as others seem to assume, she just handles her irritation in way that has her walking away from others rather than staying. She isn't exactly the kindest female, but she isn't mean either. This dog isn't the type to stop and help someone, but she won't actively try to make the situation worse for them.

The only exception to this would likely be for pups. The female seems to have more natural motherly instincts when it comes to pups, or just young creatures in general. If she is in charge of a pup, she wouldn't hesitate to lay her life down for them, she just believes they need to be protected and cherished.

It takes a long time for Alice to truly warm up to someone, to consider them her friend. It takes even longer for her to completely trust someone too. When she does allow herself to care for someone, she will become protective of them, especially if they aren't capable of protecting themselves.
Backstory:
Born as Valda, the female was born as a stray in a small litter. She always adored her brothers, preferring their company than that of any other dogs. From the beginning, Valda had always been a more peaceful and quiet female, preferring to avoid violence and confrontation when she could. It tended to intimidate the female.

As things go, she aged and grew apart from her brothers, though she remembers the day her brother had gone missing, having left on one his outings only never to return. Ever since that day, it had made Valda apprehensive of things, and whenever anything made her nervous, she would turn and walk around. Unfortunately, she didn't always walk away quick enough.

One night while she was out trying to find a scrap of food, Valda had come across a pair of men standing in an alley, loudly arguing over something she hadn't been paying attention. She had always been wary of humans, but had no real reason to fear them, so she had turned over a trash can, found what she desireed and be can to walk away. Had she been paying them more attention, she probably would have noticed a van pull up to the men and stop. Valda hadn't even been expecting it when catch pole was looped around her neck and she was dragged into the makeshift kennel in the back of the van.

She was transported to the local dog fights, not a big operation, but an entirely ruthless one. Dogs were fought to the death, or close to it, with the victors living to fight another day (they weren't given much extra for winning), and the losers were discarded in an empty alley after the fights ended so that they couldn't be traced back to them. For Valda, this was her worst nightmare since she had never been an aggressive dog.

Refusing to fight, Valda was quickly turned into a version of a bait dog. At some point during the nights, she would get thrown into the ring with a new dog, who would be taught to attack and kill on her. Since she was large and intimidating, and yet had not inclination to fight back, it made her the perfect practice dummy for the more violent dogs to practice on. Valda hated every second of it, and would often hope to succumb to her injuries after every fight. However, the humans would patch up enough so she could stand and take a beating, and the next time they could, they'd throw her back in there.

One night, though, she was thrown in with a new dog who proved to be overzealous in his attack, nearly killing her in the ring when he disobeyed commands from his owners. Believing she would die of her wounds even with treatment from them, the men tossed her into an alley that night and left her for dead.

Fortunately for her, she was found and taken to the local shelter where she was treated for her wounds and put up for adoption. It took her a little bit, but her calm and avoidant demeanor eventually won over a young couple with her toddler aged daughter, and they took her home. Which is when she became Alice.

She lived with them for a while, and found herself content and happy in the home. Her favorite above all was the toddler who she would spend all day with, and had vowed at some point to protect with her life. However, it seemed not all good things would last for her, and eventually her family brought home a second dog, Bernon. Alice tried to live peacefully with the new dog, but found she didn't appreciate his aggression towards her and his distaste for the toddler.

One night the two dogs were in the living room with the toddler while the couple was making dinner, when the youth stumbled over and felt on Bernon. The male growled and lunged at the toddler, and Alice instinctively dove for the male, intent on fighting him for the first time in her life. During the scuffle the toddler had screamed, even more so when Bernon had nipped her on her leg, promoting more ferocity in the female determined to protect her.

Once the pair was pulled apart, with Bernon having sustained multiple injuries, with her having very few, the couple instantly blamed her because of her history and through her out. Heartbroken and confused, Alice returned to being a stray, finding refuge in an alley most didn't visit, allowing her to live in peace.

It was about a year after that Alice met an elderly man. He was kind, patient, and lived alone. While she was apprehensive of people, not wanting to be tossed aside again, the two slowly struck up a friendship. He would leave food outside for her, and she would come over and lay her head on his knee whenever he sat outside.

For the first time in her entire life, Alice had felt entirely content, like she had everything she needed, and was slowly becoming an owned dog again. But time took that away from her as well, ripping the gentle soul she had kindled a friendship with away from her, leaving her heartbroken and confused again. While she understood old age was inevitable, she couldn't help but feel like she had been cheated once more, and returned to the streets where she could live by her own, away from everyone else.

It was at this time the virus begun, and Valda saught out shelter in the boarded up home of the kind old man who had shown her kindness. There she shelters with Auset and her little family.

Name:

Duncan

Age:
3

Gender:
Male

Species & Breed:
Alaskan Husky Dog

Appearance:
WP Custom of Duncan.
Duncan is a lean dog, without much fat on him. In height, he stands at 20 inches at the shoulder; slightly small for his breed. Most of his fur is a silvery gray colour, though his underbelly and facial markings are white. The silver colour on his head extends down to his black nose. Duncan's right ear-tip is white. Duncan's eyes are a deep, cold blue that belies his gregarious nature. Like all distance-type Alaskan Huskies, his monochrome coat is dense. Duncan's muzzle is relatively broad. Proportionally, his limbs are of average size for an Alaskan Husky, but his tail is slightly longer than average. Duncan's ears are slightly larger than average.

Personality:
Allegiance: Owned
Duncan is a very stubborn husky. However, his past has drastically impacted his confidence, and he is nervous when far from humans. Duncan is aware of this, and tries to disguise it with a false bravado when talking to other animals - both for them and for himself. It is hard for Duncan to think on his paws, and he prefers to plan in advance. Especially after the downfall of humanity, he loves the memoury of humans, and his owner above all others. After the apocalypse, Duncan is learning to adjust to primarily being around other dogs, and wants to make and maintain friendships. Duncan is quiet, therefore, until he has something to say, and wants to prove himself to other dogs. The husky hates being alone, and will actively avoid that situation. Duncan has a strict moral code, and will fight back if he feels he has been wronged. Duncan sleeps lightly, often awakening in the night.

What Was Duncan's Life Like Before?
Duncan was born in Poland Springs, Maine, in a breeding program for sled dogs. However, when he was a juvenile, he was removed from the program due to his nervous nature and frequent night awakenings. This led to him being passed from one home to another, nameless and fleeting, making the already anxious dog even more anxious. This ended, however, when he was adopted by Kyle Daniels. Kyle took excellent care of Duncan, adopting him permanently and showing the dog the love, care, and affection that the husky's life had lacked, as well as giving him his name.
That was, however, until the virus robbed Duncan of his truest friend.
