The once abandoned warehouse, its ceiling still filled with cobwebs and dust, was bustling with movement now. Individuals moved back and forth between groups of people that filled the space, delivering meals, blankets, first aid supplies, and anything else they had been able to find or acquire. There was no furniture in the space, no lighting that still had power and no running water. To light the space, handheld flashlights and candles were precariously positioned or held by those walking around, and any water they had had been collected in old, dirty barrels from the rain that poured down. They dared not go out in search of cleaner water, food, or anything else.

Clutching a pile of dusty blankets, Bella walked slowly between groups of people who were seated on the floor, huddled closely together to keep warm despite the bitter early-spring cold that still loomed. “Blankets, anyone?” she offered, crouching low beside the group and offering the blankets, dimly illuminated by a single wick candle that burned in the middle of their feet. A little girl, no older than ten, lifted her head from what Bella assumed to be her mother’s shoulder, and reached out for one of the blankets. “Thank you.” came the voice of the mother, who didn’t open her eyes to look at Bella.

Bella stood slowly, her knees and back aching from the amount of bending and crouching she had been doing these last few days. The hunter raids had been getting more and more common in the little town they inhabited over the last months, and now the raids seemed to be near constant. Daily, new shifters would arrive at the warehouse; some wounded, others on the run, and more who were hiding before the hunters found them, too. Those who had already arrived at the warehouse wouldn’t leave, but often asked newcomers what was going on outside the cold brick walls that kept the rest safe. Every day, they heard the same stories: Hunters perusing the establishments which were run and frequented by shifters, burning down houses and buildings that were either owned by shifters or rumoured to be housing them. Hunters roamed the streets, armed and ready to pick a fight, always in groups of three or more, always ready to act first and forget to ask questions. Neighbours turning in neighbours, step parents turning over step-children. It really had become every man, woman, or child, for themselves. Everywhere but the warehouse, it seemed.

Bella had turned her attention to the next group, seated on the floor a few feet over from the first. This group was full of young girls and boys, barely old enough to be in high school, and one ancient woman with grey hair and grey eyes that had long ago lost the ability to see. As she approached the group, her eyes still on the older woman, the woman spoke in a voice barely above a whisper:

“Yes, child, we’d love a blanket. But first, come here, dear,” the older woman beckoned Bella forward with the curl of one finger, and Bella went to her, kneeling beside the woman, stunned and more than a little confused. With a shaking hand, the woman reached up, her hand missing the blankets. Bella opened her mouth to speak, but the older woman shook her head, a slight smile playing on her lips.

“You’ve got a friend, child, look!” The woman’s hand grazed softly across Bella’s shoulder blade, and then she brought her hand forward for the group to see. All the children around her were watching intently. On the woman’s hand was a spider. A large spider, with many eyes that glinted in the candlelight and long, hairy legs, sat unmoving in the middle of the woman’s palm for a second before one of the children jumped to their feet, a hand raised.

“Nana Rosa! Kill it!” she shrieked.

As if the spider understood, it took off, moving up Rosa's arm and disappeared into the loose sleeve of her sweater. Bella got to her feet, taking a step back from the group. She hated spiders.

“Constance!” Rosa scolded. “She is here for protection, just like the rest of us. You wouldn’t want to be squished, neither does the spider. You will leave her be.”

“Yes, of course, Nana Rosa.” said another child, a boy, who helped Constance back into her seat on the floor beside Rosa. The boy turned his eyes to Bella, and said “Thank you.” Bella took that as her cue, and nodded farewell to the boy. She turned around, looking for the rickety metal steps that would take her up to the catwalks that ran midway up the building. Only one of those catwalks led anywhere; the others had either fallen down, or the rooms they ran to were locked. The one room that was accessible, they used to store things like extra blankets, food, and candles. She was heading towards that room, goosebumps on her arms from the thought of that massive spider being on her back.

“Keiran,” she said as she shouldered open the door into their elevated storage room. Keiran was a new friend of hers, someone she had met about a week before when there were still only a handful of them hiding in the warehouse. Now there were more than twenty, and that count had been done two days ago.

Standing in the corner of the room, with a flashlight between his teeth, stood Keiran, rummaging through a cardboard box full of canned food. He let out a sigh, and turned to face her. “We’re going to run out of food.” He said inevitably. “Half of what we’ve got is already out of date, and the other half is going to go soon… Even if it didn’t, we don’t have enough to feed this many mouths for more than a few days.” He was facing her now, his hands gripping a table behind him as he leaned back against it. He looked exhausted; dark bags were easy to see under his eyes even in the poor lighting, and his cheeks were beginning to look hollow.

“We can’t keep going like this, Bella. If the Hunters find us, we’re sitting ducks. Most of them are either too old or too young to fight, and they’re all starving. We’re weak, we’re wounded, and we’re running out of supplies.”

“We need another plan. A better plan.” she hadn’t meant for it to come off harsh.

“You think I don’t see that? When you came to me for shelter, I let you in. I had plenty of food and provisions for myself, enough to share. But I didn’t think I’d be sharing with half the damn town!” he spun abruptly, throwing the flashlight he had been holding into a metal wall. It hit with a metallic thud that anyone in the warehouse would have heard, and fell to the floor broken, leaving the pair in complete darkness.

“Keiran,-”

“Don’t. I’m sorry,” he sighed, and she could picture him pinching the bridge of his nose. He had done this most times he sighed since she had met him. “I’m sorry. It’s not your fault, and I’m not blaming you. These people need help, I just don’t know how to do it anymore… But if I don’t help them, who will, Bella?” she could hear the grief in his voice, the hopelessness. He had taken responsibility for so many lives, opening his secret hiding place to anyone who needed to be hidden. She felt for him, and she had been about to reply to him when the screech of protesting metal came from one of the huge bay doors along the far end of the warehouse. A door that they, nor the shifters they housed, would have opened. Bella and Keiran ran out of the storage room, thundering down the noisy metal stairs, going to meet who, or what, ever had opened the door.

The wind howled, pushing the two travelers backward, back toward danger. A storm was brewing ahead of them, thunderclouds roiling above them, dark and angry. The rain had not yet arrived, but when it did it would be punishing. The two struggled onward, shivering, the larger supporting the smaller. All the time, thunder boomed and lightning crashed down, as the storm prepared itself to arrive.

But this was not the only storm brewing. Behind them, danger followed. They didn't quite know in what capacity (how many were there? How far behind were they?), and there was a possibility that they had covered their trail well enough, crossing streams and climbing trees, that they would be lost to those following. But better safe than sorry.

Clutching her wounded ribs, where a Hunter's knife had sliced through her side, Mack stumbled along, her short, curly black hair whipping in the wind. She leaned heavily against her companion, who's arm was wrapped around her, tucked into her armpit on the opposite side to keep her on her feet. Morgan was tall and strong and not hurt at the moment, so he made sure to help his friend.

“I remember—there's a warehouse—up ahead,” Mack panted through her pain. Morgan merely nodded, keeping his silence, and remaining on high alert. He constantly glanced around them, though there was currently no sign of pursuit. But he was ready, nonetheless.

Through the dim light and the wind-whipped trees the warehouse finally appeared before them. Putting on an extra burst of speed, they pushed themselves with their last reserves to the big sliding doors. Morgan gently released Mack, who slid unceremoniously to the ground in a heap, both hands pressed to her side. Morgan gripped the edge of the sliding door and heaved, opening it just enough that he could slip through. Grabbing his friend once again, the quickly moved inside and he shut the door behind them.

Only then did they take a moment to let their eyes adjust to the darkness and notice their surroundings. And realize the warehouse was far from empty.

Mack looked at all the eyes staring back at them, glittering in the dim light. “Shit.”

~

Outside, a red fox slunk out from the cover of the trees on the hill above the warehouse. It stood shivering in the wind from the oncoming storm. Hesitant, hesitant. Green eyes watched as two new comers move quickly inside of the warehouse. Still, it hesitated.

The fox had watched the warehouse for three days, seen the comings and goings of shifters (they were not human, by the smell of them). The fox was being hunted, but had managed to avoid detection for days. It knew that there was modicum of safety in the warehouse, but at the same time, there was danger in putting your trust in others. Worth it?

As the door of the warehouse laboriously slid closed, the fox made a snap decision. Bolting down the hill, it headed straight toward the gap in the door. Just before passing through, it seems like there were some kind of trick of the light…but before the fox could disappear inside the building, the creature disappeared from sight.

The door closed, and the storm broke.

“Shit.” Keiran’s deep voice echoed, defeated. Of course! Of course, more mouths to feed would fall out of the sky at a time like this. Looking at the pair before him, wind whipped hair, chests heaving, he knew he couldn’t tell them to leave. But he wanted to. He couldn’t see much more of them in the dim lighting.
.
He had stopped a few feet away from them, his arms crossed as he thought about what to do with these two. Tell them to find a spot on the floor? Offer a small meal for the pair to share? Ask for names and make introductions? He wasn’t sure where to start, and the brain processes that would give him the answer wouldn’t run. He was so tired, so sick of being the saviour everyone seemed to come running to. He didn’t even know most of these people, and assumed most of them wouldn’t remember him when they left.
.
He was drawn from his brooding thoughts by Bella’s hiss. Keiran hadn’t noticed her standing close behind his shoulder until her breath moved off his skin, leaving a cold patch. She took a couple steps in front of him, her head raised slightly in the air, and drew in two strong sniffs.
.
“Blood.” She hissed. She took another couple steps towards the new pair, sniffing rapidly, first at the male then moving swiftly over to the female. It didn’t take more than a few seconds to locate the wound in her abdomen. She raised her pink eyes to the male. “She needs medical attention. We don’t have a doctor, but I promise I can do better than nothing at all. We’ll bring her upstairs, away from the others…” She cast a glance over her shoulder, and saw that most of the rest of their patrons were watching the new pair. Bella wasn’t surprised, strangers made most of them uneasy.
.
She turned to look at Keiran, who was still standing behind her, looking like a father who wasn’t sure what to say. She made it easy for him. “I need some warm, wet rags, a blanket, and some clean clothes. And a flashlight, since I know there isn’t one up there anymore.” She said clearly and slowly, making sure he didn’t miss any pieces of information. Keiran gave her a brisk nod and before turning to gather the supplies she requested, he looked at the pair of newcomers, focusing more on the male.
.
“We don’t have many rules here, but the main one is don’t do anything you don’t want done to you. We’re all fighting the same fight, here.” and with that, he spun around on his heel and took off in search of the things Bella had requested.
.
Bella rolled her eyes; Keiran just had a way of making things sound more dramatic than they needed to be.
.
“We’ve got a lot of stairs to climb, follow me.” she said, giving the new pair a warm smile. “My name is Bella, by the way. That,” she pointed a thumb in the direction Keiran went, “is Keiran. He started this place. He’s basically our saviour here, he brings in most of our supplies, and what he says goes around here. He’s a good guy, just got a lot on his plate right now.” She started slowly back up the way her and Keiran had come down moments before, a large spider speeding up the ramp ahead of her. She made sure to stay several steps behind it, hoping it would dip under an edge and allow her past, but it didn’t, and she watched it run under the heavy door into the room.
.
Bella tried to push the thought of the looming spider out of her mind, knowing it would only make her anxious and make her hands shake, which wouldn’t be good in the event that she needed to put stitches in the new woman’s wound.

Morgan saw the bigger man approaching them, echoing Mack's sentiment. He was only a few inches taller than Morgan himself, but Morgan straightened subtly, his face darkening as he showed his full height against the stranger. He pulled Mack against him a little tighter. She had her arm wrapped around his waist (she was too short for him to get it up over his shoulders), and he had his arm tucked underneath her far armpit, holding her up with her bad side away from him. His posture clearly said, “Don't mess with me. I'm tougher than I look, and I look pretty tough.” It was also clear that he was protecting his companion. As the tall, muscular stranger continued to approach, Morgan began to quiver, so slightly that it was imperceptible to others, but Mack felt it.

She gave his side of squeeze, spreading her fingers out against his ribs and pressing her hand lightly into him. For his ears only, she murmured out of the side of her mouth, “Easy, Morgan. It’s OK. It's OK…” With the pressure of her hand and her soft, soothing words, his quivering slowly stopped. He retained his attentive posture, but the threat had been neutralized. It wouldn't do to have him exploding into fur and claws in their first encounter with the strangers.

Mack spoke up. “Sorry to intrude," she said, a little sarcastically for all of her weakness. “We thought this place was empty. I'm Mack, and this is Morgan." She made of feeble gesture with her free hand at her tall companion.

“We aren't looking for trouble,” she continued, softly, for the muscular stranger's ears only. But it was then that she noticed the striking woman beside him, and the words were stopped in her throat as her golden hazel eyes widened. The woman was absolutely beautiful, with long, billowing white hair, pale complexion, and startling gray eyes. She was also several inches taller than Mack. Mack found she couldn't speak. What do you say in the presence of beauty?

But then those silvery gray eyes narrowed, the strange woman sniffed the air, and hissed, murmuring, “Blood.” She moved closer to first Morgan and then Mack, sniffing. Both of them stood stock still, too shocked and unnerved to move. When she commented that Mack needed medical treatment, both of them only nodded slowly, seemingly caught in her spell. Or at least, Mack was. When she glanced over at Morgan, he was still looking at the other man, somewhat suspiciously and nervously. He shifted his weight unconsciously, and she squeezed his side again reassuringly.

When striking female turned her penetrative gaze from them, only then could Mack relax. When the other woman had been looking at her, Mack felt as though struck by a live wire, every nerve buzzing, every hair on her body standing at attention. Something stirred inside of her that she didn't understand, and it was almost a relief when the woman looked away. But at the same time, Mack wanted to see those gray eyes again…

After she gave instructions to her companion, the man turned to them and laid out the rules of the warehouse. “Duh,” Mack muttered mutinously under her breath when he finished, mostly for Morgan's benefit. He didn't crack a smile, but his mouth twitched slightly. Mack, wounded or not, always had time for sarcasm.

They followed the newly named Bella up the stairs as she told them about Keiran. As Mack struggled with the stairs, Morgan scooped her up into his arms and carried her. Mack snorted with derision. “I had it under control," she snapped. Morgan just smiled down at her as they followed Bella up the stairs and into a new room.

None of them knew they were being followed by an invisible creature, too curious for its own good. But the fox hard to know what was going on… always safer that way.

WORK IN PROGRESS (ill PM you when im done lol)
Bella stopped at the door, praying with everything she had in her that the spider wouldnt be right there waiting for her on the other side. She gave her new companions a moment to catch up with her before she gave the heavy door a shove, standing in front of it to allow them through.
.
"Watch your step, I'm sorry its so dark. Keiran will bring a flashlight." Bella said, looking from Mack to Morgan and back again. She tried to keep her eyes from lingering, but the knowledge of Mack being wounded made her itch. Regardless of severity, wounds needed to be treated in a timely manner.
.
It only took a few minutes for Keiran to find the required supplies and meet them in the room. When he arrived, Bella was still holding the door open to let in the little light that filtered in from the rest of the warehouse. Keiran clicked the flashlight on and passed it to Bella before ...
