My dog Penelope is peeing and pooping on the carpetMarch 19, 2023 01:26 AM

When Penelope got groomed she soon started to pee and poop on the carpet in the playroom even though she is house trained to pee and poop on the potty pads and she still does every morning when me and her wake up. But all of a sudden she starts this and we even rub her face in her pee when she pees on the carpet and I even spank her. But I know that isn't the right thing to do. But it seems like she still doesn't get the message. Do you guys have any suggestions for me? To make her stop completely? Also she is a full grown Shih Tzu and I put her in her kennel for a timeout when she gets into trouble and we do have a stainless removal called Pooph and it works.

Ok, one thing you shouldn't be rubbing the poor dog's face in her own pee. And to spank her..💀 please do not. As someone who works with dogs, this behavior is very stupid. If your dog is not old but is an adult dog and she is peeing on the carpet and all, that means she has an internal problem and you should bring her to a vet. Please stop spanking her as it is not her fault.

I never thought of that by taking her to the vet. Also when I picked her up from the dog groomer she was still stressed out from getting her nails cut and there were other dogs getting groomed as well. And she is doesn't like loud barking and she is just used to small dog like her own. I'm not sure if she is still stressed from that or not.

Another thing. Dogs are not allowed to drink water at the groomers as they dont have material to clean things up so dogs are not allowed to have water. She could have been very thirsty; got home and drank a lot of water and therefore she is backed up. I have seen plenty of dogs go through this

Also she won't understand what the timeout is and it'll create a negative association with the crate, so stop doing that. Definitely see a vet first if it's a new sudden behaviour when literally nothing else has changed. Otherwise stress can be a cause of behavioural changes like this.
If nothing is wrong vet wise, I would recommend to re-potty train as if she was a puppy who doesn't know any better. Also if you can, I would get rid of the puppy pads and start having her potty outside, it helps create the habit of no potty inside (rather than 'can potty inside but only where mum says so'). Re-potty training completely would be the best course of action. And I'd personally train the potty command too.

She does pee and poop outside in the morning when I take her wet pee pads outside so she got that one down already. And she still pees on the potty pad in my bedroom because I also have carpet underneath the floor title.

I know Penelope didn't even drink water until in the evening time during dinner.
