How to politely decline a commission?March 1, 2021 11:36 AM

Hey all you cool dogs and pups (totally not a TK reference)!
I could really use some advice for politely declining commissions.
A little bit of info: I take commissions off-site (on another art focused website) and my forte would be canines. The problem is, I sometimes receive commissions that I simply don't or cannot do.
For instance, the design may be overly complex, bizarre, or potentially something I'm uncomfortable drawing (demonic things, politics e.g). I don't want to appear incompetent at what I do or come across as offensive. I also feel incredibly guilty when I have no choice but to decline the commission to save myself and the commissioner from unnecessary stress. I've been thinking of creating rules and specific themed commissions (e.g, pets only) to avoid another incident like this but I'm worried it'll slow down potential commissioners.

I'm not exactly a drawing/painting/, etc artist but just say you are sorry but it makes you uncomfortable or may be too hard to do though rules and specfic themes will also help.

Maybe you can add something like a Can Do / Can't Do list, that way people will know what you're not comfortable doing before they order? If someone orders something you're not comfortable with anyways, you can just tell them to please check the lists.

Heya! I've come across something like this a few times and I've got some templates you can use!
A lot of times its best to be straight foreward and not sugar coat anything.

If your commissions aren't open:
Hey(or any type of greeting), I'm afraid that my commissions(or customs) arent open at the moment, but I do hope to open (time you plan to open again if you are going to) so you'll have the opportunity again then.

If designs are too complex:
Hello, I'm sorry but I don't think I'll be able to fulfill this commission due to the design being too complex and the completed piece wouldn't display the character's markings clearly.

Alt:
If you'd like we could work something out to simplify the design
Hope this helps!

At this time, I am unfortunately uncomfortable/unable to complete the work you'd like, due to [optional reason here]. I apologize for any inconvenience.
. .
Unfortunately, your character/concept looks too complex for my skill level at this time; I worry I will not be able to do your character/concept justice, but thank you so much for considering me.
. .
Thank you for your interest, but due to personal preferences I do not take on projects focusing on gore, politics, or demonic symbolism/influences.
. .
At the moment, taking on this project may add stress due to the deadline/complexity/my current queue (adjust as needed). Thank you for considering me, and I hope you'll reach out at a later date.
. .
Basically, treat it like a business, as that's how you are conducting yourself here. 'I apologize for any inconvenience' and 'Thank you for considering me' will take the polite rejection a long way, and you'll be less likely to get some upset customers.
